ULPT Request: water damage in the apartment I rent. How to milk insurance
Posted by Equivalent-Cup1511@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 9 comments
I rent an apartment and water is currently running into the kitchen through the light fitting in the ceiling. The apartment upstairs must be totally flooded.
The water looks and smells like piss. Most likely there is a storage room above my kitchen with a heap of old furniture.
None of my personal possessions are damaged but the kitchen is and the landlords insurance will need to kick in.
How do I hop onto the insurance claim?

More likely it is a blown wax or rubber gasket/seal with their toilet.
If you already reported the issue to the LL they've likely already made their claim, so you coming back later and saying "oh, I didn't notice this before but..." is going to raise a red flag.
If you have your own renter's policy you can put in a claim for damage to your personal property utilizing the other creative suggestions here and they'll subrogate and go after the LLs insurance to recover.

Are you covered by the landlord’s insurance?

Yes. Any damage to my personal property is covered by the landlords insurance

In that case, go find some stuff that you can get cheap, wet it and claim it. Find non working consoles, a laptop, etc.and claim them.

This is the way. Facebook marketplace etc.. Some will be given for free or very very cheap (charity shop or even the dump, but then the condition may look too shitty to claim on), TVs, artwork, consoles, laptops, pc. And you sadly stored it all directly underneath...

Surely the insurance adjustor won't question why you started storing your entire living room setup on the kitchen counters.

They can question all they want.. As long as its plausible what can they do? Obviously you have to have been able to fit the stuff there. But people live in cramped conditions or maybe were putting into storage and stacked it up.. Get the stroy straight. Make sure it's semi beleivable. The insurance have their own insurance to cover them anyways, so..

Scour ebay for water damaged electrical items, cameras, computers, watches etc

Obviously you need piss water insurance, not milk insurance.
