If a Libertarian were elected, what policies could go into affect right away?

Probably would need Presidential Executive Orders, because we all know Congress wouldn’t pass Libertarians laws for it to be signed.
stosolus@reddit
The president could bring troops home and instruct congress that if they'd like to continue those wars, than there needs to be a declaration of war made from them. It would likely pass, but in two years, we get a new congress and we'd have districts that would be flipped.
The president also has pardon power. Imagine being able to pardon every non violent offender currently locked up. Not just the big names that we want, but people that haven't seen their families in years.
Forcing congress to have to have the votes to override a veto would essentially help gridlock congress, which is usually a great thing.
SCB024@reddit
Many "nonviolent offenders" are quite violent but took plea deals to dodge the violent offense(s).
stosolus@reddit
When you say many... What percentage are we looking at here.
Also, all of that can be looked into.
SCB024@reddit
Percentage? No idea.
If you are looking for information from a reddit post instead of doing your own research, I have very little faith you will ever find anything truthful.
stosolus@reddit
You said many... So in your head, how many would you estimate there to be. What's your perception of that stat.
stosolus@reddit
From what I've seen the people in this sub are a bit better about sharing sources.
oluwasegunar@reddit
Milei in Argentina sets the tone of what would happen. Things could get worse but then they would get better.
goodheartedalcoholic@reddit
End the fed. This ends wars and bailouts that would need to be funded by taxpayers.
Pardon all non-violent prisoners.
No more aid to Ukraine or Israel.
Flat tax. (X% on all income above what one needs to meet the bare necessities to live)
Phase out welfare state (including the largest recievers of welfare, corporations) as regulations and state back monopolies are phased out.
The government stays out of health insurance, quits limiting how many hospitals and Dr's there can be. Abortion legalized.
Anyone who can pass a criminal background check and a health screening is allowed to immigrate. No more red tape. (Provided we aren't giving them public services like ER visits and public schooling, etc...)
End (privatize) licensing laws and minimum wage.
Massively reduce military spending.
And churches have to prove they're a charitable asset to their communities in order to not be taxed. I think churches are supposed to fill in the gaps for things like health insurance and food stamps for those who really do fall into bad times, but the system can be abused.
Reducing or eliminating police budgets. At most, cops should only come when their called. No more speeding tickets and harassing people for non-violent crimes.
End social security, if that doesn't already fall under the purview of welfare.
Finally, abolish the federal government altogether. Let the states become their countries. Let California be a social democracy. Let Texas be more conservative, let Florida be an anarchist "state." Allow for experimentation.
Just some thoughts.
Taki32@reddit
Yeah, even amongst libertarians, abortion and church protections are debated. And almost no libertarians want the abolition of the federal government altogether. Additionally, since we cannot disentangle the welfare state, (as president alone), we would need to vet immigration more than you suggest
goodheartedalcoholic@reddit
Libertarians are pro federal government?
Taki32@reddit
Not necessarily pro or against, it depends on how it's run.
goodheartedalcoholic@reddit
I think I just listened to Rothbard Radio do an episode on it, and it made a lot of sense. Though, I can't say ive looked at both sides of the issue. They pointed out the lack of representation at that level, since you might have 1 senator for 100,000 people or something, as well as the potential tial for states to more freely experiment with different governing models. Californians can be social democrats if they want, Texans can be more Christian nationalist. States that want to be more libertarian can. One size doesn't fit all, and that's sort of a built-in factor when you're governing at a federal level.
Taki32@reddit
Except that it can work, we see that in Switzerland where very disperate political ideologies do just fine in the same federal structure, the key is breaking up powerful voting blocks and ensuring that each individual vote matters
goodheartedalcoholic@reddit
Switzerland is much smaller and comparatively more homogenous than the US. That was one of the arguments they had for abolishing the federal government, basically what you just said.
Taki32@reddit
One might argue that it's much less homogenous with 3 official languages spoken in country and English as a de facto fourth, additionally the entire population is armed federally even if the weapons are stored locally. It's a very interesting place
goodheartedalcoholic@reddit
Hmm. That's another one I've never heard before. It's an interesting place indeed.
pigs_in_zen@reddit
Here's a list of federal agencies the report to the president. The president has varying amount of control over these agencies but I bet there is a lot that could be done to scale down their activities.

A Libertarian president would likely need to create a department Trump is making for Elon Musk (Department of Government Efficiency). A department that audits and analyzes the federal government would be necessary.
Foreign policy would be a huge area that a president could impact. Use of the military, foreign relations, and trade would all be impacted by that.
The last part would be to use executive orders to undo past executive orders that increases the size and scope of the federal government. Undoing things that weren't required by congress unless those things audited or analyzed the government.
nachoRJ@reddit
We already have that though, after the Inspector General Act of 1978. Most departments have an OIG, which is responsible for finding fraud waste and abuse in their affiliated department. Restructuring these I can get behind, but adding more departments doesn’t make sense to me.
Dunamivora@reddit
Centralizing all of the OIGs to consolidate the work is probably a good idea.
Just like IT, Digital Security, and Digital Privacy should all be dedicated offices like the OMB.
Seventh_Stater@reddit
Regulatory reform.
JayTheUltimaMage@reddit
End all tariffs
iJayZen@reddit
Stop all aid to Israel and Ukraine!
Particular-Coast-582@reddit
Now I am not sure about this. If we have treaties in effect that are signed by Congress, the president would be pretty much forced to honor them. Of course he could immediately abolished those treaties, but then there is NATO and several other organizations that are aligned for mutual defense, and it would get quite complicated.
iJayZen@reddit
I agree an uphill battle. The next administration's agenda should be how to better legal citizens of the United States. Everything we do should reflect this. Yes, there is the world's peacekeeper which we are but aid to Ukraine and Israel is highly dubious in this regard. Status Quo actually blows but could be worse of course...
Automatic_Taro6005@reddit
Foreign policy is the area they’d have the most power. Having a president go 4 years without bombing another country or sending troops to war would be a huge win.
Urban_ninja75@reddit
Watch the deep state rise up and blatantly organise the quickest coup in history and then start the cycle all over again with a deep state operative as president
Particular-Coast-582@reddit
Doesn’t this pretty much mirror what just happened with Biden and Harris?
notyogrannysgrandkid@reddit
None. I think quite a few executive actions and orders would be halted, though.
Particular-Coast-582@reddit
Yes, rescinding all arbitrary executive orders passed by predecessors, and followed pretty much as law could immediately be abolished!
Particular-Coast-582@reddit
The president is responsible for executing laws, passed by Congress and running the executive branch. What he could do in the very first day and office is simply not staff departments and agencies. He would probably be impeached for this, but it would immediately save a lot of money and forced congress to prove why it must be spent .
Vast-Return-7197@reddit
1st day....direct (order) Education Dept to immediately implement the restructuring of classes to include the Civics, Ethics, Shop/Home Ec, Money management classes, even if combined.
Have the DOJ/FBI Dept of Agricultural evaluate if the patents /restrictions of Hemp were justified or a result of graft/bribery by other big businesses. And if so to bring charges against said entities.
Term limits for all elected officials.
Instruct all judicial branches to look into/investigate if the moving of jobs overseas were/are treasonous. Mainly if they were moved strictly for profit margins, putting that above national stability.
Direct all judicial branches to begin the immediate implementation of a 60 day immigration registration period for the registration of all illegal immigrants.
Also with the realization that taxes are probably never going away, the implementation of a flat tax.
Think that would stir the pot and stink up for one day.
TheRedGoatAR15@reddit
The ironic disconnect of expecting an "Executive Order" by a Libertarian President to 'enforce' Libertarian ideals.
10 SET X TO 0
20 GOTO 10
pantuso_eth@reddit
Haha
Republicans:
11 SET X TO 3
Democrats:
12 SET X TO 8
We come in at line 20 again lol
PunkCPA@reddit
Do they still teach using line numbers and GOTO in Basic?
Simple_Butterscotch1@reddit
Step 1. End the federal reserve
TheDroneZoneDome@reddit
That’s not something that can be done right away. The Fed was created by an act of congress. He could, however, appoint a Fed chairman that would completely defang it.
homeboycartel2@reddit
None. They’d only have control of 1 branch and would need to work with Congress.
TheRealPaladin@reddit
A libertarian president might set policies, but he / she would have a hard time implementing those policies since they will most likely end up with a congress where the majority of members from both of the major parties will routinely be united in opposing those policies.
What you'd really end up with is an administration that can't actually accomplish much unless it wants to try to force a massive expansion of executive power.
longsnapper53@reddit
If a libertarian president were to get enough votes to be elected, there would likely be a hefty presence of the libertarian party in Congress.
PunkCPA@reddit
If the president were to submit a budget reflecting his program, that would force Congress to either go along with it, or to argue in favor of continuing the bullshit. Make them embarrass themselves by arguing in favor of the Department of Education, sugar tariffs, the federal income tax, etc. I would bet on huge cuts, even though not everything would be enacted.
Ok-Affect-3852@reddit
Bringing the troops home, presidential pardons, ending current executive orders, sending national guard to protect our borders, submitting a budget, federal appointments of liberty minded individuals.
bethechaoticgood21@reddit
First would be minimal cabinet members. Second full stop to foreign aid. Third, start the process of bringing all the troops home. Fourth, separate the government from the federal reserve. Fifth, abolish the 16th Amendment Sixth destroy the Fed. Seventh, go back to a precious metal backing. Silver or gold. Eigth, abolishing most of the 438 agencies and sub agencies. Ninth, put an end to insider trading Tenth, start removing money from circulation.
soggyGreyDuck@reddit
Id love to see a US version of Milei with all of the government agencies on a board and whoever was elected going through them and tossing them in the trash.
Free_Mixture_682@reddit
Not in any order:
Pardon Snowden, Assange, et al
All U.S. military engaged in combat operations to terminate operations ASAP and begin to bring troops stationed outside the U.S. back to the U.S.
Veto all legislation that results in a larger deficit
Veto all legislation that is contrary to the Constitution
Veto all legislation that is not a single subject
Get Elon to start making the government work with efficiency.
Get Bernie to eliminate corporate subsidies
Day 1, and if these were in order, this would be the top priority: have the legislation, probably already drafted by Ron Paul long ago, to end the Fed presented to Congress to signal that as your top domestic priority
Begin to dismantle the layers of regulations and laws that prevent the health care economy from being market driven rather than government driven.
Veto renewal of the Patriot Act and eliminate most changes to the national security state brought about after 9/11, eg: abolish Dept of Homeland Security
Veto funding of the FBI, CIA, DEA
These would be a good start. Some, he can do without Congress. Some he needs to get through Congress. The Veto and the gridlock that might create could be the best thing that results.
TheFortnutter@reddit
So… give power to the state to remove power from the state? Presidential Executive Order?
EyeRepresentative327@reddit
None. Would need Congress and 60 Senators
Tricky-Lingonberry-5@reddit
He/she can't do much, because U.S. system gives a lot of power to institutions. President is not that much powerful. It is impossible to make necessary changes (like shutting the central bank down) without the qualified majority.
sweetDryzen@reddit
Reclassifying ATF to "audit the fedbois"
