Hello, not sure if this is the right place for this type of question. I will be heading out to San Diego soon for work, and wanted to ask like minded individuals about how things are in San Diego. Aside from the normal stuff taking place around the country, is there anything visitors need to be aware of to keep safe? TIA

Are you asking if it is safe for POC? I would say yes it is one of the safer places.

What part of town are you staying in? San Diego is pretty safe

Going to most be in the Seaside District/Gas Lamp District (I believe that’s the name of the area) near the Padres Stadium

That area is safe enough, but the last time I was there, there was an increase in homeless tent camps in downtown streets and parking lots. I even saw big turds on the sidewalk a couple of times.
Yes, big turds. If I had been looking at my phone I would have stepped in it.

According to 2019 FBI crime data, San Diego isn’t even among the top 70 US cities ranked by violent crime rate.
San Diego has a violent crime rate on par with that of Madison WI. Cities like Des Moines IA have much higher per capita violent crime rates than San Diego. So you shouldn’t be too worried at all about being a victim of a violent crime, especially if you are spending your time in touristy areas like the gas lamp quarter

Dude it’s San Diego, not Afghanistan. What do you think you have to worry about?

I am not sure why you think a major American city is going to be a war zone or something but it's going to be fine, make sure to hit the beach while you are there and stop worrying about whatever you think is scary enough there to warrant this sort of post.

Just moved from there back to the Midwest. It’s safer than Milwaukee or Chicago I can tell you that. As others have said homeless are a problem and sometimes fights break out at the bars downtown but nothing out of the ordinary.

You'll be fine. San Diego is pretty chill. Gaslamp has problems with homelessness but you just have to be aware of your surroundings. Stay away from those stupid pedicabs too. They like to take advantage of tourists.
