It's just becoming obvious at this point

My internet isn’t censored. Where do you live?
Chewbacca_The_Wookie@reddit
Do you use Google? Facebook? Twitter? YouTube? Your internet is censored.
Kathilliana@reddit
That’s just private enterprise creating their own policies. Do you object to private companies creating their own policies?
Chewbacca_The_Wookie@reddit
You're not understanding what I'm saying. Private companies are free to make their own policies, provided those policies are not at the request of the federal government because at that point it is a violation of the First Amendment. Regardless, even without government involvement a policy that suppresses information is censorship, regardless of their legal right to do so.
Kathilliana@reddit
When I tell you not to swear in my house, I’m not censoring you, I am creating policy for my home. If I’m in charge of a company (no matter what type,) I get to decide policy. This is basic Libertarian stuff. Private enterprise, by definition, cannot censor you. ONLY government can censor you.
Chewbacca_The_Wookie@reddit
The literal definition of censor is "to suppress or delete as objectionable." It is illegal for the government to censor information, but that does not preclude other organizations from censoring information, it just isn't a crime for them to do so.
If not censorship, what would you call a private company that controls the flow of information intentionally removing or suppression information they find objectionable? If not censorship what would you call it if that same company does so at the request (or strong suggestion) of the federal government?
Kathilliana@reddit
Partisan. Sure, they are censoring technically, but it’s just policies. It’s the same as a burger joint deciding not to sell pizza. FOX News censors out anything that paints Republicans in a negative light. It is their right to do so, and I defend it. It’s the same with MSNBC.
schmemel0rd@reddit
Why wouldn’t those private companies have some level of censorship? You can’t come into the business I work at and say whatever you want, I would also get fired for directing clients to our competitors. Should my boss not be allowed to set those rules?
Chewbacca_The_Wookie@reddit
First of all, censorship is still censorship regardless if a private company or the government does it. If Google intentionally removes articles from its search engine that show Google in a negative light, that is censorship regardless of their legal right to do so. Second of all, these companies have all censored information at the request of the federal government, either expressly or due to aligned political views.

I often use the search by time period function on google. Censorship was definitely was an issue in the 10’s but accelerated rapidly during covid. It seems like everything now leads to some news/journalistic piece versus the farther back you go you either find a primary source, blog or in depth journalistic piece.

Try using DuckDuckGo and Google side by side and see just how bad it has become.
Character_Bet7868@reddit
I use duck duck go but I don’t think it’s that much better
Malkav1379@reddit
Pretty sure they just want censorship.

Do people just ignore this? Not wanting to accept it? Or actually agree/want this?
GinjaNinja1221@reddit
I thinks it's been such a slow moving goal post. now that it's on full display those that see it have been screaming about it, those that are just seeing it are confused and feel like it came out of no where, and the majority of the people just don't see it happening.

They don't want to cencor guys. They just want to creep on you. But don't forget, you are not powerless here. You can learn cybersecurity and encryption at a certain level. If you use correct software, correct OS and correct hardware and be carefull not to give away your private information (s), they can't snoop on you. Cryptography exists people. It can free you. Use it.

The political classes in all western nations are increasingly isolated from the rest of their respective countries and becoming more and more incompetent. They exist in a mono-culture where they much more closely relate to one another on a international level rather then their own people. They don't know what it is like to live as a normal productive individual, nor do they care since they believe that tax payers are beneath themselves; Both in terms of education and upbringing.
They can't communicate, they can't debate. They rely on consultants to make decisions. They have all identical educations and backgrounds and no real world experience. They are extremely effective at navigating party politics and government bureaucracies, but know almost nothing outside of that.
They are a professional class with no professional standards nor any professional organization providing any sort of regulation or licensing or training.
So they are unable to listen to people, addressing concerns, and or make concessions. They believe that they are better then normal people so there is no point even if they could be effective politicians, which they can't. Their logic is that they are the experts, they know better, and you shouldn't question them anymore then you question your dentist when he tells you to floss your teeth.
The trouble is they are not better and they know nothing. Everything they do is guided by consultants and informed through executive summaries on power point presentations.
They don't want to get bogged down in details and want to stick to grand strategies and long term plans, which is nice except for the fact that the world is nothing but details. All the details matter all the time. Which means that all grand strategies and 5-years plans are misinformed and doomed to failure before they even begin.
If you need proof of this just look at the embarrassing attempts by western politicians to implement high speed rails. Especially in English speaking countries.
So the thing they seek more then anything else is to avoid shame, embarrassment, and anybody challenging their authority.
They can't challenge back, they can't explain anything, they can't debate, and they can't change minds or wind hearts.
So the second best thing they can do is just silence anybody that publicly denounces, protests, or challenges them in any meaningful way.
And that is what internet censorship is really about.
What they want is the ability to label huge swaths of their own population as "extremists" and get them to shut up. Cancel them, humiliate them, punish them, get them fired, implement social credit score, get all major internet corporations working to keep them from sharing ideas or criticisms on the internet.

if america gets internet censorship, it becomes china

I always have people say "This is not the hill to die on" They will be saying that as the government puts them in cattle cars.

Every hill is the hill to die on when it comes to rights.

I have a friend that got band from r/Libertarian for voicing his opinion on J6, and mods refuse to let him back in the community. It’s hard to complain about internet censorship of other sites, when it’s happening here
