Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) still slaps

I used to love this film as a kid and recently forced my 6 year old to watch it with me. It’s admittedly slow and very British in the beginning (kid was like “why is this guy singing all the time???) but the blending of animation and real life is awesome and it ends with a killer battle of magic vs Nazis.
It takes place during WW2 in England, so I definitely sanitized the “good guys vs bad guys” of it all to my son, but once those magic knights started bonking Nazi’s on the head we were both cheering, LOLing and engaged. Highly recommend a rewatch with kids or without.

Literally just searched Reddit to see if anyone else loves this childhood favorite as much as I do. I know most people have no idea what we’re talking about, but it’s good to know there are people out there that remember and love “the age of not believing” 🥹

Literally just watched this again last night as a 44 yo man. The final battle sequence is so fun and satisfying and Dame Lansbury is so great.
Ahuhuitsme@reddit
Dame Angela* chivalrous titles (Sir and Dame) engage one’s first name, not the last!

That must be why my summoning spells never work...

All I remember is that I loved it as a kid but I haven't seen it in about 40 years
conace21@reddit
You need to recheck your math. The movie was made in 1971, amd that was only 39 years ago.
Ahuhuitsme@reddit
lorenzo463@reddit
I showed it to my daughter when she was 2, and it became the first movie she demanded to watch over and over again. She was riding the swiffer mop around like it was a broom, and demanding that we play Portobello Road as soon as we picked her up from daycare.
I think I eventually got Substitutiary Locomotion out of my head a few years later.
Ahuhuitsme@reddit
Substitutiary locomotion it must be!
Federal-Zebra7702@reddit
Age Of Not Believing is an under rated Disney classic 🎶
Ahuhuitsme@reddit
This is such a beautiful song, rather heavy, it always gets me!
HeyCarpy@reddit
My mother had a beautiful singing voice. She’d sing “The Beautiful Briny Sea” sometimes, at the end she’d sub “shimmery shiny” with “shitty and slimy,” always made me laugh as a kid.
lionmurderingacloud@reddit
Your mom sounds awesome.
HeyCarpy@reddit
She really really was❤️
alfamale_@reddit
The number of times I watched this, sat on the floor at my grandparents' house 😍❤️❤️❤️
penguinwife@reddit
Still my second favorite Disney movie! I introduced it to my kids and everything.
aimademedia@reddit
Just one of me absolute favourites :)
Starbreiz@reddit
One of my faves
9_of_Swords@reddit
Forgive me, as I know we don't talk about the Wizarding Franchise any more... but damn if I didn't start humming Substitutiary Locomotion after Minnie G made the armor come to life in the last movie.
It still astounds me that my work wifey hasn't seen B&B.

This earworm is in my head on a regular basis! 🤣

It's constant. I love the movie but hesitate watching knowing the ear worms will be prevalent for WEEKS

Still have this.

I have that too!

I still my VHS version of it too. Remember watching it on Sunday nights Disney Movie Magic.

I always twist bed knobs because you just never know
Mooseandagoose@reddit
I definitely destroyed the knobs on my bed. It’s was a metal daybed with 4 knobs and I tried them all again and again until they just sadly hung lopsided. My parents were very displeased when they learned how they got that way.
unlovelyladybartleby@reddit
I bought a spare room bed with knobs on purpose so that my dorkier friends can have that moment of "maybe this time"

Medellia23@reddit
Horrifying fact: if this movie were made now it would be about events in the mid 90s lol.
lakewinola@reddit (OP)
I know! Same thing with Almost Famous. That concept in today’s context would be about going on tour with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
Beautiful-Grape-7370@reddit
But we aren't groupies. We're Band-Aids.

Damn you.

I remember my Uncle made me watch this movie instead of Tron when I was a kid.
Emotional-Network-49@reddit
Ohhhh you should have been made to watch BOTH
Pksoze@reddit
I eventually watched Tron but I was in my 30s. Still enjoyed Beddknobs though.

Now that he understands about WW2, he can appreciate other great films, like Inglorious Basterds.
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
And of course, once he learns who Eli Roth is, it's then time for a deep dive into his directorial work.
farmer_of_hair@reddit
After which he’ll enjoy such wartime classics ‘Come and See’ and ‘Night and Fog’.
Although I second Inglorious Basterds for the most factual historicully 🫡
GarminTamzarian@reddit
I certainly hope he'll be introduced to great films like Johnny Got His Gun when it comes time to learn about the First World War as well.
itfailsagain@reddit
It seems like a logical progression.

Histericalswifty@reddit
Oh, not at all. My wife made me watch it as part of my induction to British life.

My first encounter with the wonderful Angela Lansbury!

It's strange, but I never watched Mary Poppins when I was a kid. But my Dad recorded Bedknobs and Broomsticks (off the Disney Channel, I think), and I watched it repeatedly. It was one of my favorite movies, although it took me a while to realize some of the an
When my niece was 3 years old, I used to watch it with her. I still have short videos of her dancing to "Portobello Road."

Same! And the movie Mr Limpet! I don't know if you remember that one but I love that movie still to this day!

I remember that song at the end of the movie. 🎵Call out the navy…..something about the old home guard. It was catchy. Also, Briney Sea.

Murder She Wrote was a gift to the world. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is proof that Angela Lansbury that was a treasure, and that show wasn’t just a fluke.

Funny how that is a whole new movie as an adult when you understand the context of that period of the war better.
jedooderotomy@reddit
I know, right? Same with Sound of Music.

Angela Lansbury always delivers ❤️
jedooderotomy@reddit
I love her so much! My grandma looked just like her.
Nwsamurai@reddit
I have never wanted to watch this, because one Sunday night there was supposed to be a new episode of The Simpsons and this came on instead. I had checked the paper and the tv guide, and I was at my grandparents house so it took me forever just to tune the rabbit ears just right. When this came on I was so upset I called channel 2 to complain, so someone had to listen to a message from very emotional 11 year old who felt cheated and deceived.
I don’t blame this movie (anymore) but I still can’t watch it because I will always be ride or die for The Simpsons.

As an adult, the lyrics of “Old Home Guard” gives me goosebumps

My grandparents taped that movie off TV as a gift for us when I was a kid but it was longer than the VHS tape they used so they had to go to a second tape. So all of my memories of watching it as a kid involve a “ack! Where is part two?!” intermission break about 3/4 of the way through.
