Became a statistic tonight…

I can’t sleep so I had to vent. Went to the Rustic tonight for a friends birthday. Came out at 10:30 with my car rear window broken and my briefcase stolen. Reported it etc…. But nothing is going to happen. I thought uptown was safe… especially in a well lit and active parking lot with security walking around. It’s not. I’ve lived in Dallas 15 years and this is the first time I’ve had an incident like this. Sense of security Lost.😡

This is what voting Democrat is getting this country.

The last time we went to Dallas for vacation came back to the lock broken on my 2006 trailblazer that was beat to shit with nothing inside the vehicle. I live in New Orleans and have never had an issue here.

Thank a democrat.
Economy_Level_6945@reddit
That sucks. I hate thieves.
Special-Steel@reddit
It can happen anywhere but criminals are becoming more brazen and don’t fear prosecution.
VirtualPlate8451@reddit
The laws around the use of lethal force at night in Texas are some of the strongest in the country.
I’d be much more worried about some cowboy shooting me in the back than DPD actually doing their job.
Economy_Level_6945@reddit
As long as you’re not breaking into somebody’s property, you don’t have to worry about getting shot in the back by a cowboy. What are ridiculous position you’re taking. I’ve lived in Dallas since 1984 and I’ve never experienced any cowboy trying to harm myself for my family.
dsliland@reddit
You are more worried about a cowboy shooting you in the back? I’m not sure I have seen or heard a story about this happening in Dallas.
Also, does use of lethal force differentiate between night and day?
robbzilla@reddit
It does.
VirtualPlate8451@reddit
Criminal fucking mischief. All I need is a reasonable belief that you are in my front yard at night to do property damage and I can start blastin’.
Not even in my house and no warnings are required. I see you in my yard at night, assume you are there to do criminal mischief and I’m covered.
I challenge people to find a bar lower than that for lethal force.
zekesaltspider@reddit
There is no way you are going to convince a jury that lethal force was necessary because of someone “in your yard”
RAnthony@reddit
Allow me to introduce you to Joe Horn:
https://web.archive.org/web/20080201091417/http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/texassouthwest/stories/DN-fightingback_20met.ART.State.Edition2.3777102.html
He was no-billed in Houston a few months later. https://ranthonyings.com/2008/07/no-billed-joe-horn-says-im-no-hero/ it can and does happen.
LastWhoTurion@reddit
Defense of property was not the argument used for the grand jury.
https://www.chron.com/neighborhood/pasadena-news/article/joe-horn-cleared-by-grand-jury-in-pasadena-1587004.php
“Horn’s defense hinged on his assertion that he fired out of fear for his life, making the shooting justifiable under Texas law”
RAnthony@reddit
Castle doctrine in Texas precedes the whole idea of stand your ground, yes; however, stand your ground was inspired by Texas's castle doctrine.
In other states, the duty to retreat has convicted homeowners in the past when they shot Intruders. The people who were convinced that homeowners should be able to just shoot people who come in their house looked to Texas and the castle doctrine for inspiration when drafting their laws.
So while they didn't use explicitly use stand your ground, they did.
The problem with stand your ground is it leads to things like Trayvon Martin being shot by a stalker looking for a black kid to kill, and a dozen other things just like it since. It's one thing to be on your property and not required to retreat, and another thing entirely to be out in public carrying a gun and just shooting people because you're scared.
LastWhoTurion@reddit
SYG had nothing to do with Trayvon Martin being shot.
RAnthony@reddit
That's false.
LastWhoTurion@reddit
When Zimmerman used deadly force, was there a completely safe avenue of retreat available to him? If there was not, then SYG is irrelevant.
RAnthony@reddit
That is not the basis upon which to determine this. Zimmerman used syg as a defense. His supporters used syg as a defense.
Zimmerman stalked trayvon Martin, for no just cause, even after he had been told to stop tailing him. He then cornered him, and he shot him in cold blood.
LastWhoTurion@reddit
What do you think SYG is? It removes a duty to retreat in the moment you use deadly force. The entire narrative of the defense was that he could not retreat when he used force. If SYG was his defense, then they would have argued that while he could have retreated, he didn’t have to.
sissyjanna@reddit
That seems completely different than “just being in your yard”
RAnthony@reddit
There was a guy in Austin that was shot while standing in someone's yard. While it was surmised later that he had been burglarizing the homeowners vehicle, we only have the word of the homeowner that this was the case.
Dead man in front yard, homeowner no-billed. Look up "threatened with screwdriver" and shot in Austin.
It happens, I'm telling you.
AmbergrisAntiques@reddit
Stop going in people's yards.
RAnthony@reddit
That's the proximate answer, yes. Personally I think we should look deeper than that.
AmbergrisAntiques@reddit
I really don't. I think there is no reason whatsoever to go on someones property unannounced at night. I believe defensive force is justified when someone else's property at night. I believe defensive and deadly force is justified at any time if I witness a crime in progress.
I think this recent push to defend criminals is privilege by those who can afford to have their things stolen and it's why property crime is skyrocketing. I don't believe the police can help or are really able to.

Your loss. I'm a great storyteller, or so I've been told.
gollygreengiant@reddit
How about... Don't burglarize homes, and if you do, do it in a state like California, or a country like Canada, where the laws protect the burglar's safety, rather than the homeowners'. Pretty simple if you ask me.
RAnthony@reddit
That was my take at the time. While my discomfort with that position has grown since that time, I see no other logical or emotional position to take. Stay off other people's property unless invited. It's pretty simple.
gollygreengiant@reddit
I read your post here. I just want to make it clear that I don't think anyone should die over property. However, I do believe that beyond my property line, an imaginary line, but a very real divider between public space and my space, is a place where I should be able to defend myself and my children. If you're coming around the neighborhood at night time, stay on public property. Respect what isn't yours, understand that I don't know your intentions, also understand my only intention is to keep myself in my family safe. I feel blessed to know that the law where I live protects me more than someone robbing me. Well you hear stories like Joe horn, you also hear countless more stories about people with bad intentions, doing horrible heinous things to people who never deserved it. I hope you live in a place where you feel safe in your home as well. Thanks for having this discussion with me
RAnthony@reddit
I grew up in a town near Holcomb, Kansas https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clutter_family_murders now I live in Austin. In between I've lived in many different places, none of them particularly safe. I was raped at 15 and abused by family members until I met my wife and we settled down to raise children and try to live "normal" lives. I will defend my property with force if I have to as I say here; https://ranthonyings.com/2024/09/criminal-justice/ the trick is not having to defend yourself or your family, and that's not something we can arrange without structural changes to our economic relationships with each other.
gollygreengiant@reddit

IrishTex77@reddit
It’s a beautiful thing. One of the few remaining places where citizens have, and are protected in doing so, the right to protect their property and families from criminals.
VirtualPlate8451@reddit
It's great when applied by good people but ripe for abuse. The case from this weekend where the 17 year olds were shot in their car would have been perfectly legal in Texas as long as it was dark out.
The guy got home, saw the kids and shot them through the windshield. All he'd need to do would be to argue that he thought they were there for anything on that list of crimes and he'd be free.
I personally don't think that specific shooting was justified like at all.
fyrkrag@reddit
He would need to prove that those assumptions where valid. Be ause it sadly has happened and the hime owner was found to not have said valid reasons and is currently facing murder charges.
FamousSun8121@reddit
That would not be legal here you are a straight full r.
VirtualPlate8451@reddit
It's literally in the penal code. Go look it up.
AmbergrisAntiques@reddit
I'm trying to imagine an example where shooting someone in their car would somehow match the legal thing we're talking about here. Did they park their car on someones lawn?
FamousSun8121@reddit
It wouldn't. This dude commenting is a moron.
I teach LTC in TX and although the laws are more loose at night it doesn't free you from prosecution. Shooting still need to be "reasonable."
Pulling up on a car on your property and then just opening fire is not.
Thisismythrowawaypv@reddit
If I'm thinking of the right story, the homeowner had some acreage and a pond, the kids were intending to ask permission to take homecoming pictures there...
AmbergrisAntiques@reddit
At night?
Infamous-Courage-381@reddit
You don’t have the right to kill someone over property
DividePotential8329@reddit
yeah it just seems like a bit much to kill the criminal especially if they are doing something as minor as criminal mischief and also any jury is going to value a human life over property so that wouldn’t hold up in court either way
Smoothsinger3179@reddit
No it would kind of have to hold up because the statue said so. It's called an affirmative defense. I think the possibility of a jury going against that would easily result in a judgement notwithstanding the verdict... And of course you could ask for a bench trial to avoid that issue, as well
DividePotential8329@reddit
the defendant would have to prove that there was absolutely no other way to recover the property and that that was the only choice they had. being that its property, 99% of the time theres other ways to recover it that doesnt involve killing whoever stole it.
Guardian1015@reddit
If the DA prosecuted, the defendent would likely be out $1million even if they won with zero risk to the DA. There is never a 0% risk of being found guilty. Then it's prison & depending on an appeal or pardon. For most their life is over at that point either way. Be hard to kill & hard to convict.
Depends on how much the defendent talks too.
fyrkrag@reddit
Yes, and no if it is found that it is not a reasonableestimation of the relative to use of force you're looking at murder charges. Ie im just cutting through your backyard and you blast me murder if im activly atempting entry, theft or vandalism different story. Mostly this is to address thefts on the southern border where peiple were taking property from the ranchers. And to adress issues where ranchers ran afoul of drug traffickers and cayotes and were attacked.
Scrubbn_Bubblez@reddit
Castle law is crazy in texas, your car is an extension of your home, i broke a dudes arm who was in my car. Walked out back because dogs were going nuts, looked at the driveway and saw lights on in the car. Didnt register that someone was in it till i was right there. Kid tried bolting when i kicked the door shut. Got his arm. Still ran off. 2 hours later cops were at the door. Guess he went home and told his parents. Cops and i had a good laugh. Nothing came of it. I say kid he was propably 17. Middle of the night in my car. Cops asked if i wanted to press charges. I was told hes lucky. Legally i could have shot him. And nothing would have happened.
Xyllus@reddit
lol he told on you?! thats hilarious
Scrubbn_Bubblez@reddit
Oh yeah. Little fucker probably thought he could get some money out of it. Or his parents did.
Xyllus@reddit
He probably told his parents a wholly different story haha
Scrubbn_Bubblez@reddit
Oh for sure. I dont know what the outcome of that end was. All i know is that the police chose not to follow through with criminal charges. On my part. And i didn't press charges. I figured broken arm and having to run home with it was lesson enough. Probably sat there for a good minute too. Before deciding to wake up whoever to take him to the hospital
Square-Practice2345@reddit
I would have still pursued charges. Criminally you wouldn’t be liable, but civilly the out come could be different.
ezermama@reddit
Hard way to learn. Bet he didn’t do that again. If one body part causes you to sin, break it? Or chop it off? How does it go?
skinny_gator@reddit
Highly doubt he went to the hospital probably just smoked a crack rock to ease the pain
Xyllus@reddit
Haha yikes thats gotta have been miserable for them. Not that they don't deserved it!
skinny_gator@reddit
his parents or parent were probably out trying to do the same thing to other cars
randomquestioner777@reddit
So, are you saying that castle law is "crazy" in a good way or bad way?
Scrubbn_Bubblez@reddit
Its just crazy, nether good nor bad. What can happen using that as the foundation for firing a gun has led to many incidents that would be considered morally grey. Plenty of stories of spouses shooting their significant other, or neighbors taking a vigilante stance for minor disagreements.
randomquestioner777@reddit
Okay, I see your point now. I'm all for castle law but I can see where things can go awry.
Infamous-Courage-381@reddit
That’s only if you’re inside the car at the time of entry.
Scrubbn_Bubblez@reddit
No, in Texas under castle law, your vehicle is considered an extension of your home regardless if you are occupying that space or not. Now if you are out and about. That might enter a grey area. But it still falls under castle law allowing you to use deadly force to protect what is yours. The obly thing that will get you is shooting them in the back.
Known-nwonK@reddit
Never think ‘nothing about it’ after an encounter with a criminal. 99% of the time if they get away with nothing after you defend yourself or injure them the first thing they’ll do is whine to the police that they were innocently minding their business when you assaulted them unprovoked. Now 90% of the time the police aren’t going to do anything after you tell them what happened, but at least you set the narrative first (ie you: I scared off a burglar when I showed them I was armed vs them: I was just walking down the street and the dude came out waving a weapon and calling me slurs).
Guardian1015@reddit
I would not show anyone I was armed unless I intended to fully use the firearm.
llkevinll@reddit
Fully intend to use, that’s the phrase you were looking for. But “intend to FULLY use” is hilarious, like dump a full clip or something. Made me think of an acorn falling.
SpecialMango3384@reddit
So what you’re saying is, “start blasting”? Sounds good to me
743389@reddit
Very important. The old rule of being first to tattle still applies. This is discussed in Massad Ayoob's book on the use of deadly force. Don't let them set the narrative.

Guardian1015@reddit
I'm ok with the law & wish it was nationwide. A vehicle is many people's livelihoods.
By shooting someone you still risk prosecution by a DA & could be out millions in defense even if you win. That being said I would not shoot unless my life or families lives were in imminent danger. DA's should be penalized for losing self defense cases. They have zero risk in their discretion to take the cases.
Scrubbn_Bubblez@reddit
Absolutely, if you shoot you shoot to kill. And that comes with alot of exigent cricumstances. I have two big ass dogs. So if i really wanted i would have just let them out. Like i said i didnt know what was really going on. So.etimes they just sit out back and bark. Something just felt off about how they were doing it. So i went to check.

warm all the kids (teens) in my life (nieces, nephews etc) I know you’re kids you think you know better but you’re pretty dumb ….but listen well, life is not a Disney channel show DO NOT EVER, EVER go into someone else’s property without permission “PERIOD” doesn’t matter if your ball is right across the fence or a cats stuck in a tree or you’re just using it as a short cut this is Texas you can and eventually will get shot going into peoples yards, apt, homes ,cars . Some might actually think you’re a threat and others are just itchy to blast off on anyone don’t give them the opportunity
THIS GOES DOUBLE TRIPLY FOR ALL THE BROWN KIDS , don’t become a statistic , the real world will drag you , your face and name across the dirt like nothing the society and the legal system is fkn vicious.

Infamous-Courage-381@reddit

old4nic8er@reddit
That's not how it works. A man was found guilty of homicide for shooting someone trying to steal stuff from his shed. You have to feel your life is in danger before using lethal force.
Brilliant_Anxiety_65@reddit
And this is why I just throw your packages in the yard when delivering for Amazon.
LastTxPrez@reddit
Criminal mischief is a class B misdemeanor, same as possession >2oz. I’m not sure that is worthy of lethal force.
Hellephino@reddit
Criminal mischief follows the theft ladder and can go up as high as the amount of loss; for example, recent cases of vehicles being cut up to steal headlights quickly, damage alone was over $2500, making it a felony. Quit chirping unless you read the whole statute.
Smoothsinger3179@reddit
Petition to get the law changed?
Chinny-Chin-Chin0@reddit
You are missing a key part “where the land or property cannot be otherwise recovered” if you do what you described you will 100% be prosecuted for murder. An example of what they mean is their was a case where a guys work truck with all his tools and equipment was getting stolen and he killed the guy. They tried charging him with murder saying he could of just bought new stuff but his defense successfully argued that since they were literally stealing the things he used to make money he would of been unable to work to replace them if he let them get away. With that being said part of the reason they are strengthened at night is because of the added danger the dark adds. Someone breaking into your car in the day time? You can much more confidently walk out and see if it’s just one dude etc. at night there could be people hiding where you can’t see them etc.
ezermama@reddit
There was a story about 10 yrs ago. There was a guy at this house in the yard with a mask on. It was night. He was shot and killed.
There was a Halloween party down the street. The guy killed was an exchange student and had the wrong address. So fucken sad!!!
Go ahead and be Rambo, but know that if you take a life, someone that mistook your house for someone else’s, you have to live with that for the rest of your life. Big price to pay.
At least vet the guy: Halt! Who the fuck are you?! OR You lost, Buddy? Something. If they are a bad guy, I think you’d be able to tell. If they’re an exchange student and they no speak English-uh, I think that would be obvious via body language. You know when you scare the hell out of an innocent person.
I would only shoot if there capability, opportunity, and intent to use deadly force. Ex: They have a gun pointing at you. They’re 10’ from you with a knife. If they want my car, they can have it. Insurance will cover it. I’ll just get a new one or be able to sell that one with a good story. If they’re in my house with my family, BLAM!
Stuff isn’t worth taking a life over. My two cents.
Lifeblood82@reddit
“Stuff isn’t worth taking a life over”
Apparently some people think“stuff” is worth losing their life over.
Sad really but I work my ass off for everything I have and I’ll be damned if I just set there and not defend MY property and all contents on it with lethal force if necessary.
I’m in Texas. I assume most people around me are carrying some form of lethal force.
IMO

painsgains@reddit
Ya who wants their car back after you shot a guy in it anyways! Could you imagine the mess? I'm a huge proponent of the castle doctrine and 2nd amendment but it's should be the last line of defense... if possible give them a chance to do the right thing... obviously depends on the situation. Don't put yourself in unnecessary risk either. Take classes and learn the laws and risk assessment. And keep your cool under pressure and most the time you can avoid having to use deadly force. Also do what you can to not put yourself or property in that situation in the first place.
ezermama@reddit

Guardian1015@reddit
My only difference here is they are taking someones car I think warrants deadly force especially if they depend on the car. Otherwise I agree. Still a prosecution costs way more than a car.
PhoebeSmudge@reddit
Heck you can be on the phone with 911 reporting suspicious activity at a neighbors house having the operator telling you not to shoot and murder someone and still be found not guilty as they were afraid for their lives.
Apparently Texas values things more than people and has a bunch of wusses who can’t handle strangers. I wouldn’t let my kids trick or treat in this state.

PLEASE DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT use deadly force at night or anytime if your vehicle is being stolen!!!! This is a big NO, 12 seats never believe a vehicle is worth a persons life! Note the last word typed was recovered! Please trust me on this. Now, if the thug has started your vehicle and attempting to run you over, its more than just theft. If you then feel that your life is indeed in danger and you cannot in any way avoid from being ran over then it’s up to you to decide what for of action to take! One who carries a firearm should already know the Texas laws and I should not nor will tell one what to do!
As for the vehicle break-ins, the influx has gone through the roof in DFW over the last 18/24 months. Along with that, so has gang violence, home invasion, robbery, theft, rape, human trafficking and many other crimes.
I myself, born and raised in Dallas, I have never seen crime this high nor have I seen the risk these criminals are willing to take.
I urge everyone to always be aware of your surroundings at all times.
As for your vehicles, there are a multitude of devices that are available that can alert you when there is a disturbance with your vehicle. Do a google search or visit an automotive store that sells auto alarms and such.
It’s already been stated many times, about not leaving items in view. I highly recommend that you NOT leave your doors unlocked, it’s frowned upon in the event your vehicle is stolen!
The case here for this person is just crappy! Unfortunately more and more of this is happening.
Everyone, please stay safe, stay healthy and be blessed. The times we are living in are only predicted to get worse so again, please stay safe and do not let your guard down. Again, please be aware of your surroundings. There is not a single area anywhere that one should ever think nothing can happen. I am not saying one should live in a state of paranoia, no that silly, just stay alert.
Any negativity to this statement I personally do not care, it's a free world!Unfortunately there is always a wise guy. And for those that want to pick apart what I have stated, I took this time because I care about my fellow man/woman. What I did or do for a living definitely qualifies me to make these statements. And please understand that I am someone that just wishes better for people.
Just please stay safe!

I wouldn't be worried about a cowboy with a gun. In Dallas that's the only guy that's going to protect you. Did you not see the video yesterday of the middle age woman in downtown Dallas waiting at a crosswalk. Black hommie runs up behind her and knocks her unconscious with an unknown weapon at this time. Suspect hasn't been caught. Black guy is privileged to have immunity from the police.
I've had three guns pulled on me in Dallas the last 4 years I've been in DFW. Twice by Hispanic in "roadrage" incidents. Both times I reported the plates, which "did not match the vehicle description" I gave. Police said because of that there's no further investigation that can be done. (They drive with fake plates. If they get busted they get a court date they don't show up for and replace their plates.) The last one a mixed guy pulled a gun while I was walking in front of a taco bell. He made me buy him 6 crunchy tacos, 2 crunchwrap supreme (no mayo), and 2 5 layer burritos (no mayo). Yep still remember the order and will the rest of my life. CrzyWzrd4L@reddit
Use of lethal force laws are different between night and day. Started in the early 90s when people started stealing car radios and aftermarket wheels.
If you catch someone in the act of committing a crime at night, and calling 911 would take too long, you can legally intervene and stop the person yourself. If you can prove after-the-fact that they were in the act of committing a crime, that also includes discharging a firearm and shooting the criminal.
DefiantDetective2952@reddit
Yes. You can use lethal force specifically to prevent a theft in the night time in Texas.
Can’t use it to prevent theft of property alone in the day time, though I believe there are exceptions.
PM_ME_YOUR_LAWNCHAIR@reddit
It's an exemption in the law. Usually, deadly force cannot be used to protect property only, only lives.
I think it applies at night because it's harder for cameras to catch the license plates and it would be terrifying to wake up in the middle of the night with someone taking away your means of transport.

Everyone plays a badass scenario in their head till its go time.
Lets be honest you won't know until it actually happens.
Ok-Room-7243@reddit
I’ve always said this. I’ve had talks with guys at the range a few times over the years, local shooting have come up and most guys will say “ oh yea man if that was me, he’d have a few rounds in him before…… “ or some sort of version. It’s the same as people saying to cops “ shoot for the legs!” while a guy tweaking on meth with a machete is doing a full sprint at you. Nobody knows until theyre in the same high stress situation.
BrassMonkey-NotAFed@reddit
I’m a former officer, I’ve been in multiple shootings, I know exactly how I’d respond given past experiences and I’d still recommend everyone attempt to retreat just so that if they do have to shoot, they can argue that they attempted to retreat prior to firing.
The downside is that it creates a legal precedent to retreat and people may push for the doctrine to become enshrined in law as a duty to retreat like many other states have. Keeping the laws we have and attempting to retreat prior to firing would be best.
FamousSun8121@reddit
Depends on where you are...attempting to retreat is not required here.
I get this logic from a cop though, ENFORCERS of law and all.
In TX there is not duty to retreat. If a person means you imminent harm, or it's reasonable to assume so, YOU SHOULD defend yourself. If that's with a pistol then so be it.
There are many circumstances that I'd not shoot myself...agree and exit is my mantra...but I would NEVER argue for a person to open themselves up to risk when the standard is met. You owe an aggressor nothing.
But like I said I get the cop version of it. See and probably participated in an institution rife with abuse of supposedly free citizens.
BrassMonkey-NotAFed@reddit
Ahh, the masked attempt at being ACAB. Gotta love it. There’s a reason I specifically stated that it would create the legal precedent to retreat and that’s the downside. I don’t expect anyone to retreat before shooting, however I would expect a good defense attorney to recommend an attempted retreat because it can create sympathy from a jury to indicate that a shooting in self-defense was not wanted and was actively avoided, yet warranted given the constant aggression of an attacker.
As a cop, I wasn’t required to back down, so why should citizens be required to back down? They shouldn’t. I’d never advocate for it to be a law, but I would recommend it to create the best defense you can prior to pulling the trigger.
Blake_a12@reddit
No duh you should try to at least step back if not retreat to keep/create space to try to keep it from having it come to the worst .. a sociopath would not
BrassMonkey-NotAFed@reddit
You have no duty to retreat, so no, that’s an idiotic belief to hold. It’s the in your best legal interest as a defense to retreat, but it’s in your best self interest as a survival technique to neutralize the threat.
Duty to retreat is such a shit concept, because everyone reacts differently and armchair quarterbacking a situation a week after the incident always turns up more solutions that weren’t viable in the heat of the moment. Just look at homeowners, in their own homes, being arrested for ‘not retreating enough’ because they only went to the bedroom closet to hide and then shot versus jumping their back fence and running to the neighbors house.
Stand your ground and kill the sumbitch threatening your life, you’re justified. Only attempt to retreat if you can and want to build a better defense.
AlertWarning@reddit
Yeah and what ignorant people don’t realize is retreating can cause you to trip or fall over, which could cause the attacker to be able to get you. Or if you’ve got your gun out it could be an accidental discharge which could harm yourself or a bystander. The best example of this is a pretty infamous instance of a cop getting too close to a dude, then the dude starts attacking with a knife…cop is backing up trying to draw and falls over and gets knifed about 20 times. Definitely the worst body cam vid I’ve seen.
Artistic-Soft4305@reddit
If anything keep some distance so you can put more than one round in them before they get to you.

pcweber111@reddit
This is a weird take. How often have people accidentally killed other people playing a hero each year? Now, how many people die by police each year? I can tell you; it’s not even close. So if you’re gonna parrot this attitude at least be honest about where you got these assumptions from, because it’s very clearly not based on reality.
neolibbro@reddit
I think they’re saying “robbers are more afraid of regular gun owners than police”. More than anything, it’s an indictment of how inadequate police are.
pcweber111@reddit
And it’s also demonstrably false. Not the inadequate police part. That’s very real. I’m talking about robbers being afraid of regular people with guns more than police. There’s zero proof for this, and in fact since people decide to rob people regardless of knowing whether they have a gun or not, but will more often give up to police after having a gun drawn on them, shows this to be the case.
BayesianMachine@reddit
Ifnits demonstrably false, can you demonstrate how it's false.
Intuitively it makes sense. As someone who has a temper, I am less inclined to yell at people in Texas than I would have in California.
Allysgrandma@reddit
Did you LIVE in California? I did for 64 years and feel so much safer in Texas, though I am in the greater Houston area, not Dallas. I had my concealed weapons permit in California because I had a man try to get into my motel room one night in the north Bay Area driving home from SoCA. We were so glad to get out of there. This original story is very similar to my daughter who had a window broke on her car to get to her diaper bag in California. They moved here first. We followed.
BayesianMachine@reddit
I did. And that's interesting, I guess we have different experiences.
pcweber111@reddit
That’s because you’ve been scared into believing people in this state are gun toting idiots who have no sense of public awareness or safety. There are those people out there, but it’s so incredibly rare that it might as well be a statistical anomaly.
Again, research gun violence from people on people versus police on people. It’s not even close. Suicides make up the majority of gun deaths, followed by murders, then police as a low percentage. People will kill each other regardless of whether or not they know they’re armed. The same doesn’t happen when police are involved.

Wonderful response. I carry as well, and I ironically behave better when I'm carrying then when I'm not.
I know I sound like an ass regarding the temper problem, but it's something I've been trying to fix ever since I left the Marines. Sometimes I just can't help it, but the gun thing makes me a little more civilized.
I'm not thinking in terms of statistics though, people behave the way they do regardless of statistics.
In my pea brain, I would imagine getting shot makes people less inclined to rob. Not sure if the stats csn capture that sociology well though.
pcweber111@reddit

ragingpotato98@reddit
Is it really so crazy? I remember during the 2020 riots I was looking up how many unarmed people total were killed by police and it was like barely around 1k in the country per annum. Surely more than that die to civilian gun owners.
pcweber111@reddit
You’d think so, but the numbers are the numbers. Now, did it increase at all because of Covid? Sure, probably, but not enough to warrant the assumption that rootin tootin cowboy wannabes are accidentally killing people at a high clip because they wanna play hero. It just doesn’t work like that. Most, if not the vast majority of gun owners are pretty responsible with their weapons and even the guys that openly carry are typically pretty aware of their situation. If it wasn’t the case we would have bigger issues and have heard about it by now. It’s just not happening.
Again, media and special interest groups can make people believe a great many things by repeating it over and over. It’s ok to call these people out. It doesn’t make you a maga fan. It just means you’re trying to keep the discussion rational and rooted in logic and not emotion.
DualKoo@reddit
There is proof of this. They’ve interviewed inmates and they flat out say if they suspect someone is armed they find a new target.
Furthermore Texas has less robberies when people are home. Criminals scope out houses and wait until they’re reasonably sure someone isn’t home.
That’s a matter of public record.
pcweber111@reddit
I don’t think you’re understanding. A smart robber will scope out a place because that’s just being prudent. Most robberies aren’t that well thought out. They just happen because that person is mentally unstable.
You’re correct: this is public knowledge.

Special-Steel@reddit
Yes but most CHL and other gun owners just want to defend themselves from dangerous people. It’s very rare for random gun people to blast away, even when they might be technically legal to do it. Some studies suggest the vast majority of gun owner’s finding a crime in progress end with the weapon drawn and bad guy fleeing. Not shooting, just showing.

To be fair, prosecution doesn’t come from the police. They definitely need younger more competent people working the job correctly, but the police don’t control whether or not someone is prosecuted. That falls on your district attorney, which is an elected position. Lots of folks in my area of TX were getting mad at a lack of prosecution for car burglaries and thefts, and then a new DA came to town and started taking the cases to court. Theft rate dropped QUICK in the area and the cops actually started looking for people doing the burglaries and thefts more because they knew

Texas has no warning requirements. If I reasonably believe that you are attempting to break into my car in my driveway at night, I can open fire on you from my window with an AR-15.
That is a really, really bad idea and a great way to accidently murder your drunk neighbor but from a penal code perspective, you'd be fine.
SpiritedSous@reddit
you don’t understand my point. I’m a Texas resident myself, I’m fully aware of the laws. I’m pointing out that a criminal in Texas is more dangerous than non-criminal, because they have access to all the toys you do and they have fewer qualms about using them
MurcTheKing@reddit
This exactly. Sure there may be criminals who are armed to portray a threat, but if they’re committing crimes in Texas of all places and have a gun, high chances they understand they will probably need to use it because just about anyone here can have a gun. It’s in part due to the DA
EzEuroMagic@reddit
No, it’s because the police refuse to actually do their job and make people go online to file a report, which then goes into a file that’s ignored or deleted.
Seriously, get like 20 sting cars, plant them in parking lots with a drone watching them and they’d have this shit solved in 3 months.
CrownedClownAg@reddit
Why would they go after these folks if the DA is gonna release them
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Well for one it’s a very small portion of the population committing a very large number of these crimes, set it up so they’d be liable for theft, have multiple videos and serve it to the DA on a silver player. You’d get the worst offenders off the streets and create a ripple effect among the Lower levels.
The DA won’t prosecute because the cops don’t do their job and provide any evidence or fucks for them to go on. Kinda hard to convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt when the cops wouldn’t even take a report.
jamesc5z@reddit
Do you work in law enforcement or as a prosecutor or defense attorney? Sorry, but this is not remotely accurate.
The DA will not prosecute due to caseload, "it's not that bad" mentality (mostly supported by Dallas county voters and Redditers), "equity" (mostly supported by Dallas county voters and Redditers), "non-violent offender" protection (mostly supported by Dallas county voters and Redditers), "this is just a tax on the poor " mentality (mostly supported by Dallas county voters and Redditers), and a host of other reasons NOT related to local law enforcement agencies "not doing their job". Local law enforcement agencies continually arrest where PC exists, and file cases on, offenders despite knowing that the DA will just drop entirely or severely diminish the prosecution down to a nothingburger.
The fact that you think any routine motor vehicle burglary offense would ever even make it to trial in order to "convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt" by the Dallas DA further proves you live in la la land. Almost every single one of these routine BMV arrests (if an arrest can even be made) gets dismissed outright by the DA or pled down to a complete nothingburger offense without ever even sniffing an actual trial. If they DO actually make it to trial, the "jury of peers" is much much much more lenient than you seem to assume.
On top of that, let's say it's a teenager: After the DA dismisses the charge entirely, the Court will then often automatically issue a sealing order on behalf of offender - without the juvenile's attorney even having to petition for it - thus legally wiping it all out like it never even happened. They are starting to increasingly do this for adult offenders too.
I am not exaggerating - this goes on for rapists, pedophiles, shootings, aggravated assaults, in some cases flat out murders, everything.
darkpaladin@reddit
"This is totally happening, I swear but I have a convenient explanation for my complete inability to prove this with data."

Another comment from a person who clearly has no professional direct experience with any of this. Did it occur to you that some of us do?
darkpaladin@reddit
Ah, see I must just be confused by the staggering lack of any supporting evidence to back up your claim. I'm sure you're secretly super involved and you just can't give any details cause "national security reasons".
It's ok, I'm sure you saw it on Facebook from your cousin in Ft Worth who knows a guy who's friend used to work for DPD. I hear they're eating pets too.
jamesc5z@reddit
It seems these practices by the DA are incongruent with your perceived worldview - but that doesn't mean what I describe isn't the truth.
There is no publicly available "data" for expunction orders and sealing orders. By their very nature, those orders wipe out ALL records in relation to that person/arrest and even the very order itself. I assure you Dallas County issues many thousands per year - so much so that their staff work nights/weekends the past few years just sending the orders themselves out.
There's nothing nefarious or political about these orders in and of themselves. In specific cases, they are a good and necessary endeavor. A very common scenario comes to mind: ID theft in which false identifying information was provided by the offender during an arrest - the County orders all entities to replace all records with the true offender's information. An uncommon scenario: a truly innocent person gets arrested and goes to trial and is found not guilty. Given a few caveats, they are generally entitled to have their arrest wiped out.
However, the vast majority of orders issued by Dallas County these days are neither of the above scenarios. The offenders are often not actually innocent; instead they were only "not convicted" (and thus eligible for an expunction or sealing order again with a few caveats) because the DA didn't prosecute at all, dismissed the charges outright, or only prosecuted for a siiiiiignificantly lesser, different offense.
Again, your comments prove you have zero knowledge of or experience in any of this, which is fine, but to then argue otherwise when being so clearly ignorant on the topic is peak Reddit.
I don't have a Facebook account or any social media whatsoever beyond Reddit. However, your Facebook comment/assumption succinctly indicates which "camp" you're in and thus your apparent refusal to believe the true state of this.
darkpaladin@reddit
I never claimed to be an expert, my only claim is that you're full of shit and no amount of "no really trust me bro" is gonna convince me otherwise. Show me some data publicly supporting your claims and we can talk but until then as far as I'm concerned you're trying to avoid admitting you got called out and can't actually back it up.

Well, I would let them break into 2-3 to establish a pattern, because these people are dumb enough that they would go hunting for these cars thinking they’ve won a prize, or since they will undoubtedly hit more then one car, use the drone to follow them while they hit other cars then arrest them. Would take maybe 2 hours and it’s pretty hard to argue with multiple hours of footage like that.
then give them 6 months for the first time, 2 years for the second time if they reoffend then 5 for the third. It’s like really really really easy not to break into cars and then steal a backpack full of iPads. Like crazy’s easy.
davco5@reddit
There is 0 reason to “establish a pattern “
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Well, if a guy breaks into three cars it shows he planned to go out and rob and makes the case much easier then just a single spur of the moment choice.
waffels@reddit
What an absolute waste of time, money, and energy for a single criminal. Your posts reek of a teenager that thinks they have the entire world figured out.

Ohh you have no experience in the judicial system. Nvm have a nice day

Even a couple months and a fine would have an effect. Doing nothing is telling people it's fine.
EchoNineThree@reddit
Allow lethal force to be used by citizens in defense of property. Their property and the property of others. That will bring an immediate reduction of property crimes.
whipdancer@reddit
This is Texas. You might want to check the existing regs and prior case history. I can think of at least 3 cases that made the news that were lethal force employed protecting property of others - and no one from those incidents is in jail over the lethal force. I assume there are other incidents.
I think killing someone for stealing stuff that I’m not dependent on for my living is excessive.
bbrosen@reddit
maybe, but, that's the calculated risk criminals take
whipdancer@reddit
Not maybe. This is Texas. Lethal force is allowed at least in some circumstances.
davco5@reddit
True that
CarminSanDiego@reddit
Yes. That’s pennies to their budget
ADeadlyFerret@reddit
Police don't do shit. When they do the DA won't press charges. Or the victim won't either. I've stopped feeling bad for victims because so many people will refuse to press charges. You can see hundreds of people on YouTube getting arrested for their 10th repeat offense and they're out in a week. They keep doing the same shit and they're also getting more and more dangerous when they get caught
hysterical_useless@reddit
Exactly this. Dont make excuses for them being worthless. Cops consistently do the bare minimum in all types of crimes. How do you think so many serial killers got away with the shit the did for so long??? Lazy cops doing the bare min
EzEuroMagic@reddit
In some cases. The cops gave the victim back to the killer bc they didn’t want to get involved. People still defend them
hysterical_useless@reddit
Yep! Several cases of something like that happening! I'm kinda a crime story junkie so I know all too well how badly cops fail on a consistent basis
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Honestly you’d think with the rise of people obsessed with these crime junkie stories, that people would be more aware of just how shitty police are and how little they actually do.
Instead they treat it like fiction I guess? And believe cops really aren’t absolute morons.
VapureTrails@reddit
Dude I know you hate police or whatever but DPD does actually do their job. Sometimes they are going to be busy with busier things like idk, murder. Especially since we have a higher murder rate per capita than NYC.
Our DA literally doesn’t prosecute low level crimes. Not sure how this one ranks but this is considered a low level crime.
EzEuroMagic@reddit
New York City is one of the safest cities in the country not sure why you’d use that example.
Everyone should hate police in their current state of zero oversight.
Was literally in a car accident in Dallas last year and they wouldn’t come out to do anything without loss of life. They have one of the largest budgets in the country, they just don’t give a fuck.
bbrosen@reddit
bwahahaha
cafeitalia@reddit
So you think all crime is gun crime? In Dallas majority of the murders are located in certain areas where gangs murder other gang members. Majority. And felons should not be owning guns it is against the law. So you can not say it is due to strict gun laws. Now let’s take you out of NYC and take you to nearby ghettos and see what that gun violence looks like.
And NYC overall crime is up and up.
https://nypost.com/2024/04/03/us-news/crime-was-in-fact-up-year-as-mayor-adams-tries-to-downplay-disorder/
chewtality@reddit
That person mentioned murder rate, not specifically murders via gun crime. The murder rate includes any and all ways someone may have been murdered. The murder rate for NYC is lower than that of Dallas and has been for quite a while.
It's also the same way in NYC and every other city in America, the majority of the murders happen in certain locations. I don't know why you think it would be like that in Dallas and not the exact same way everywhere else.
bigdeallikewhoaNOT@reddit
But you don’t need the police for a car accident?! They don’t determine fault. Your insurance company does. Like what did you need the police for?
EzEuroMagic@reddit
And they generally determine fault from the police immediately taking statements at the scene and giving a basic mockup of the intersection and what happened. They also know the proper terms, and will give a stop sign ticket for someone who blantly runs a stop sign while speeding with eye witnesses.
Instead 7 months later insurance finally got around to asking the guy who was going 20 over and t boned us what happened. He straight up lied about even the direction he was driving, and the witnesses had also fucked off.
cafeitalia@reddit
That doesn’t work that way in TX. For any accident where there is no physical injury cops will not come and they don’t have to. Insurance companies will assign guilt so you better take photos etc after the accident or have a dash cam. Police’s job is not to assign guilt. And they can not ticket someone if they don’t have proof.
whipdancer@reddit
They used to do all those things. One accident I was in where the car was not drivable ( but no injuries), they took pictures, cited 1 driver giving 2 tickets, then sent everyone on their way.
Made filing with my insurance a lot easier and my insurance got all the ammunition they needed from the police report - they didn’t even ask for my account.
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Pretty sure a car that’s on its side from being hit so hard in a 20mph zone in the middle of a 4 way stop is pretty clear maybe someone fucked up.
sololegend89@reddit
From a police report, filed with statements taken from witnesses, or the persons involved. You think every insurance claim adjuster takes “trust me bro, that’s what happened” as a valid source?
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Unfortunately they kinda have to now, it’s crazy what people can get away with. Ours ended up going to arbitration because of it and so it’ll be like 2 years total for someone who clearly ran a stop sign in a residential area at a high rate of speed.
Heytherhitherehother@reddit
Every city becomes much safer statistically if you stop prosecuting crimes.
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Then why has Dallas crime rate fallen significantly slower then the national average and increased in some aspects?
VapureTrails@reddit
Sorry to hear that happened to you. However, had this happened in NYC, I would count on the result being the same. It’s just how cities are in America and it is linked to our justice system. The world isn’t binary. Cop bad, they no help good, ungabunga.
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Okay, well what does NYC have to do with Dallas? They have public transit and 24% less violent crime, 51% less property crime, and 1/3 our murder rate.
They also are literally focusing on small and petty crime in order to keep pushing these numbers down further. Dallas is also undoubtedly under reporting numbers due to the sheer volume of people who have just given up as well.
cafeitalia@reddit
You brought NYC up. Who care if they have public transport etc. You are just trying to deflect the topic. Classic behavior of Dallas hater.
EzEuroMagic@reddit
No little troll. I brought up our useless PD. they used the Strawman of big bad NYC who’s actually way safer then here to try and make a political argument.
VapureTrails@reddit
Read back what you just wrote and tell me why DPD isn’t busy doing more important things again. It would also be no surprise that NYC is under reporting numbers as well.
Yet, we still use the data that we are given. Idk how else to express to you that police are actually tied to the inner workings of the justice system.
TxManBearPig@reddit
There’s plenty of other states to live in with strict gun control… GO! Be free!
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Wish I could. There’s just that little thing called money that’s in the way. Landlords and utilities sure have been great at keeping the young ones poor.
cafeitalia@reddit
Oooooo now you are crying?
EzEuroMagic@reddit
Not as much as you’ll be when Madam President takers her oath in January
Whitey_Bulger_@reddit
I am in the auto insurance industry. This type of response for car accidents is common across every city in America unfortunately not just Dallas.

Fun fact: The felony level theft amount in Texas is actually higher than in California. So all that propaganda about San Francisco was, survey says.... Nonsense!
https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/felony-theft-amount-by-state
VapureTrails@reddit
Doesn’t surprise me to be honest. The only connection I’m making here is that the law enforcement is tied to our justice system.
cafeitalia@reddit
Law enforcement is tied to city. And city of Dallas is run by liberals same as Austin same as Houston which are the worst cities for police enforcement. Democrats don’t want police to enforce the law or punish the criminals.
trebek321@reddit
You’re aware crime statistics will always favor states that are soft on crime as they don’t actually report theirs. It’ll always be higher on tougher on crime states because their PD’s actually respond to crime. When California made theft widely legal of course their crime statistics would look better than they are for the citizen on the street
NotGalenNorAnsel@reddit
You did not look at the link, or read very well. Try it again Trebek. You got this.

CarminSanDiego@reddit
I don’t understand people being so lax on theft and destruction property.
This country is going into the shitter because there’s no fear of consequence.
coresme2000@reddit
I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. I moved from the UK to get away from police passing the buck to the insurance companies and not attending burglaries, car thefts etc. This raises the rate of insurance and cost of living for everybody. Singapore doesn’t feel as safe as it does because the police don’t prosecute property crime, they take a zero tolerance approach. While it’s not as bad as violent crime it definitely affects people who are the victims. The technology exists to track cars these days and personal objects, the police need a task force just to work on this. I feel safer here than the UK as I’ve not seen much crime or homeless people in Dallas, but clearly I just keep to safe areas.
EzEuroMagic@reddit
For the group of people going around doing this. Between Reddit, Facebook and friends I see this probably 1-2 times a week.
Hell my old boss moved here in Nov and had his car stolen in Dec, he found it a few days later before the cops had even come out for a report. Police doing hack shit is directly raising insurance rates as well.
notamyokay@reddit
Those "drone watching" crime fighting things we see in parking lots do absolutely nothing. They do not record or send info live to the cops. They only record and even turn on if the property manager who is using it is okay being the one paying for every aspect of those things to work. And the city owns three. There is a long list of businesses who want them, so they move around after a month. But they absolutely are just something to have a presence, they dont do anything
EzEuroMagic@reddit
In this example, they’d have a life officer watching it, with an actual team dedicated to it. Probably works better then 90% or the shit they’ve ever done on my layman’s example.

I wonder if the near decade war on cops by the media, defund the police movements, and the rest of anti-cop sentiment had anything to do with cops pulling back from doing a good job 😵💫?
cafeitalia@reddit
Dallas government is controlled by Democrats thus the DPD. And we know that they are for not punishing crime we know they are for defunding police we know they are for allowing riots etc. So people voted and got what they deserve. They should not be complaining about crime. Dallas votes blue 67% to 33%. Majority want this.

hockeyjim07@reddit
yup. Last year I had my truck window smashed in while in Austin from the Chewy's parking lot. I was parked front row right by the entrance door.
Smashed it and grabbed my backpack with my work laptop in it and ran. There were a dozen people waiting outside for seating who saw it and gave descriptions to police..... who just didn't give a flying fuck. I wonder why criminals dont care :)
If you can commit a crime infront of a dozen witnesses and the police show up and dont care to do anything about it, then yea you're reinforced to do it again and again and again.
8thGenTex@reddit
Had my truck broken into near Lakeline Mall in Austin during the summer of 2020. Both Cedar Park PD and Austin PD refused to come out and directed me to file an online report. That report is still pending someone looking at it. There were fingerprints on the truck they could've gotten pretty easily; instead, the truck was sold three years ago and somehow they're still pretending they'll look when they get the chance.
Acrobatic-Ant-2789@reddit

emmgemm11@reddit
Because our cops don’t even show up to take the report. My car has been broken into multiple times directly in front of my apartment to the point that I just never fixed the tiny window and stopped leaving shit in my car. 2 bikes stolen, endless packages etc. cops never show. They just don’t have the people to do this. There’s really nothing to do but file a report. Your key strokes eliminate the middleman.
Even well staffed PDs don’t send anyone to take a report unless it’s a major theft or there was violence.
AntiRepresentation@reddit
Is that why active shootings are so popular in Texas?
uhmdone@reddit
I mean if you ignore the fact that people don't wanna change anything about gun laws after countless shootings and child deaths yeah

I have a friend that was sitting in his truck in Dallas in May 2023. Was sitting in the driver seat without it running. He said “I was just thinking about stuff”. A car thief walked up and opened the passenger door not realizing the truck was occupied. My friend yelled, what are you doing. The guy pulled out a 9mm and shot him through and through his abdomen. The bullet lodged into the drivers door. The police came out and wrote a report. The next day we called the police and said the bullet was still in the door. Dallas Police did not care. I finally took the door panel off and recovered the bullet, still the Dallas Police did not care. My friend fully recovered but I have serious question about police motivation. It seems if you don’t die or can’t give a photo/video of your attacker, that don’t care

You really must make sure nothing is visible inside your car nowadays. Thieves are willing to smash and grab anything that MIGHT have value in your car even if it’s an empty briefcase or backpack full of dirty laundry. Who knows, there might be a laptop or iPad worth a few bucks in it.

what we do in san antonio since break ins are so common, is you leave all compartments open, so that people can see inside that there’s nothing of value.

I’ve noticed an uptick in those stupid stickers. I have never seen one on a car that is more than a few years old and I estimate them as being $50k + value cars (Mercedes SUVs etc) I’ve assumed it’s some people’s attempt to get other drivers to forgive their inability to drive well or not tailgate them. Otherwise, if you want to gamble learning to drive, in a major city, in an expensive vehicle, you don’t get to ask for grace from other drivers. You get what you get and best of luck. Maybe I’m an a**hole. I would not break into a car because of the sticker. I wouldn’t break into a car without a sticker. Lol i dont know man. I am indian. Whenever i go to the temple in frisco. Almost all cars have those dang stickers 🤣 op is indian too. So hence my answer
coresme2000@reddit
Thank you, the joke (more a truism) about the Indian families all buying white Teslas with white seats I can verify as there were 5 Indian families picking up the same model I bought in Plano and…I’m half Indian:)
dieselgeek@reddit

Yeah it’s crazy how many student drivers text while they drive. Btw for anyone with this sticker, it just tells everyone you’re a minority driver which probably isn’t the best strategy with all the road rage.

Those stickers are mostly used by affluent people. Never use them, you're just putting a target on your car. Sorry this happened to you my friend.
Traveling_Jones@reddit
This is an extremely stupid statement. I lived in Valley Ranch, tons of non affluent Indian/Pakistani people with Student Driver stickers on their cars.
ArwingMechanic@reddit
Well yeah but then it isn't on a 100k car.

NoDifference8894@reddit
I left DFW early in the year and will never look back. Even in Arlington, we always had car break ins, armed robberys, hell even home invasions in the middle of the day. The entire metroplex went to shit.
Living in the country of Oklahoma was a great decision. So much cheaper too
LazyMirror7617@reddit
Sorry, that sucks. If you went 15 years with no issue consider yourself lucky.
Happens all the time all over DFW. I've had my window busted 7 times since covid and I don't even keep anything inside at all. Leaving any briefcase, bag, suitcase increases your chances 100 fold. These are crimes of opportunity usually, so have to not give them the temptation.
Pro tip: Keep a low comprehensive deductible if you live in a big city so you aren't out a $1000 deductible every time it gets broken into.
A_Friend_To_Be@reddit
I’ve lived in DFW my entire life and none of me or my family have ever had their cars broken into…I think you might be doing something wrong if you’ve had 7 break-ins in the last couple years.
BayconStripz@reddit
Jump a couple of income brackets and you might be more of a target
A_Friend_To_Be@reddit
lol such a hilarious missed assumption. My wife and I both have high six figure incomes, and I have a 120,000 car parked in the driveway. And I, for the past 3 years, lived in a relatively rough neighborhood with that same car parked in the driveway. But it was never broken into. Why? Kept it unlocked, kept it empty, had multiple cameras pointed at it, maintained a strong security posture in my home. Which was why I made this comment. To help people understand you don’t have to resign yourself to being a victim if you’ll just be cognizant of your security practices.
BayconStripz@reddit
You think there's not higher income brackets than you?
A_Friend_To_Be@reddit
Well if you’re talking tax brackets you’re right, there is in fact one higher bracket and I could be paying 37% instead of 35%. That said, the people who are making more than me are probably living in highland park where there’s a significantly lower crime rate, so I would argue I was in a Goldilocks zone of high income, nice car, living in a low income neighborhood that would in fact make me a target for crime and allow me to speak to the subject.
Herackl3s@reddit
My family has had their SUV broken at a park, Truck stolen at a parking lot, and significant others car broken into. At no point, was there any valuables out in the open so let’s not victim blame here, buddy. In DFW, sometimes things just go bad for you no matter which area you are in.
A_Friend_To_Be@reddit
Yes, you’re absolutely right sometimes things just happen and there’s nothing you could have done about it…but when something has happened 7 times in 2 years…there probably was something you could have done about some of those situations and taking a step back and assessing and learning from it might be prudent. That’s not victim blaming, it’s trying to help someone think about how to not be a victim in the future.
Bbkingml13@reddit
It’s possible they just drive a type of car that’s frequently targeted
lpalf@reddit
To be fair, “since covid” is 4 1/2 years at this point, not 2
boldjoy0050@reddit
Sadly, it's pretty common in bad neighborhoods or even "so so" neighborhoods.
LazyMirror7617@reddit
You're right its my fault it gets broken into by criminals. I work in a sketch area, happens constantly to tons of people.
A_Friend_To_Be@reddit
If my car had been broken into even once I would be analyzing what led to that occurring and changing my behaviors to address it. When someone tried to carjack me at a gas station at night, I reassessed my practices and set rules and processes around getting gas and driving at night. Something you might consider.
LazyMirror7617@reddit
You might consider not victim blaming
Giving my dress was too short so I was asking for it
A_Friend_To_Be@reddit
Sounds good man, that attitude is definitely gonna prevent your car from getting broken into in the future. Can lead a horse to water…
LazyMirror7617@reddit
If only your car jacking was successful, Here's to next time it is
A_Friend_To_Be@reddit
Wow man, I’ve been really reasonable this entire time just trying to help you out and get you to think about how you could prevent something bad from happening in the future and you’re gonna say you hope I get robbed at gunpoint successfully? Fuck you, you’re a piece of shit.

Yeah same. Dallas all my 40 years. Never had my car broken into. Lived downtown, cedars, oak cliff. Driven Lexus, BMW, Porsche left all them in parking lots, on side streets etc over night even. 🤷♀️ Maybe I’m lucky
csonnich@reddit
Damn. I agree OP has been lucky, but 7 times in the last few years is crazy. Where are you parking.
LazyMirror7617@reddit
Happens in Ft Worth, Arlington, Dallas so not one spot. I also have a desirable expensive vehicle that is frequently stolen. Pretty much drive my 15 year old beater VW everywhere now because of it.
clear-as-mud@reddit
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted? I feel your pain though. I drive a nicer vehicle and have been broken into twice within the past year. Honestly has me thinking of getting a old beater to drive around too
DLowBossman@reddit
Yeah you really are better off driving a beater to and from work, and only using the expensive one on the weekends for fun.
LazyMirror7617@reddit
Yeah I don't know, some people don't get how much certain vehicles are targeted. I recommend the beater at least for when you go to sketchy areas or are going to leave it unattended for a long time in DFW
Thansungst22@reddit
You drive a hellcat or one of those Kia by any chance?
My girls and I both drive Lexus and I have a Tundra and F150 I use for work when I need to do maintainance on my doors and never have any issues
I been to a lot of area too.
My cars all have Dash cam though so maybe that a detergent
I'd love to catch some thugs tryna break in our cars though, would be a fun day lmao
LazyMirror7617@reddit
Drove a Raptor then a Ram TRX, so yeah hellcat adjacent. Any muscle car or high end truck is a massive target around here. Since they are so common they are easy to steal once it gets figured out.
You will probably be better off with an LC, not near as common so the knowledge on how to steal it isn't as widespread.
No-Classroom4211@reddit
Dang
OriginalSN@reddit
I drive a crappy beater with door dents and fading paint. No window tint and clean interior. I’ll always park by nice a nice Benz or BMW so thieves won’t look twice at my car. I’ve left my car overnight in Deep Ellum/Harry Hines a couple of times and the worst I’ve gotten were bird droppings and a windshield full of business cards to the nearby strip club. I’ve probably gotten lucky even then but way better than a DWI.
I rarely get out of my weekend car unless I’m stopping to get gas.

I had a similar thing happen to me in front of North park mall. The thieves are watching the parking lot and if you opened the rear door or trunk to hide your belongings, that’s a giveaway. No where in dfw area is safe at night or day. I pulled up to a Walmart once in Bedford area at lunch time, and saw a man pull up and go inside into Walmart. Not even a minute later another car pulled up right beside his truck, a man jumped out and broke the rear window, crawled through and grabbed something out of the center console and then hopped back into his car with fake tags and was out. I was parked still on the phone with someone and got a full free view. Apparently the owner had just left the bank to get money to buy a jet ski that day. He must have been followed from his bank

Put AirTags in everything valuable you own. Toss one in your car, your briefcase, a purse, luggage, anything. You’ll be able to recover much more when you can see where it’s gone to. Still sucks. But the AirTags would show immediately where your bag is.

Uptown isn’t safe. Criminals are going to go to places full of high income, low security, and people with their guards down/ no street knowledge.
Uptown, deep ellum, Addison are all areas where you will get robbed easily even though it’s “nice”. It’s only in the areas where it’s nice, but isn’t super well known and popular where you can live with peace of mind. My girlfriend has no tints and leaves thousands of dollars worth of clothes in her trunk and backseat, 2-3 expensive running shoes and even fancy handbags. Most times she leaves her MacBook Pro on the passenger seat too. She also always has an assortment of items in there that scream “please break glass and steal me”
She also forgets to lock her car 8/10 times. It drives me nuts and I get on her all the time to not leave anything in the car since she has to park around uptown and downtown area a lot.
All of that and she has never had her car broken into in the 4 years I’ve known her. SMH

Chances are your assailant was an illegal. I live right down the road from you in Houston. I live in a fairly nice neighborhood inside the loop. About 3 blocks away there is an entire street that has turned into a 3rd world country. Illegals living and working outside all day all night. Pop up tents. Portable awnings or whatever those things are called where they sell food and drink. The ones that are not trying to make an honest living since coming in are committing crimes to survive. Robbing cars. Stealing purses. Shoplifting. Etc etc etc. An American jail is still better than the shithole they came from in Guatemala.
Go ahead and down vote this now because no one wants to hear the truth...

I agree with that 100%. Sadly our society is facing more obstacles than anytime in our history. Inflation, drugs, political infighting, accepted racism. It's all around us.
intetsu@reddit (OP)
To be honest… “any time in history “ is a LONG time and covers a lot of much worse things than where the US is currently (consider Mao and the Cultural Revolution in China and its consequences) That said.. I agree things are at a low-point in my lifetime. Especially politically.
Mountain-Category294@reddit
Apologize for not clarifying... "anytime in our history." With "our" referring to American History. With all this red vs blue we've been on the verge of a second civil war over the past decade. I thought it was finally happening after 2020 election. I also thought that the rhetoric would slow down after Trump got zinged. It did for about a week then they were back at it again. And just to clarify... In my opinion.... BOTH sides are to blame and need to just put this nonsense to bed and work together. As tax paying citizens we should demand it.

Never EVER leave anything in your car. Nothing-visible or not. Dallas #1 crime is auto vandalism and it’s a crime of opportunity. No neighborhood, no matter how “safe” is spared. If you leave stuff in your car assume it will be taken, and not politely, once you leave the vehicle. Take it from a 40yr resident-it has ALWAYS been this way. I am sorry for your loss, of course.

When I first moved back to TX, I lived in a nice gated apartment complex in Frisco. My car got broken into within 2 months, and they stole my new subwoofer. This was back in 2006, so having subs was pretty popular in those days. I would always turn down my music when I pulled into the complex so people wouldn't hear that I had one. It doesn't matter where you're at, really. My apartment was literally across the street from neighborhoods with multi-million dollar houses.

I'm going to protect myself no matter What! If I'm in my house or in my car, don't mess with me. Criminals are getting more and more brazen these days. Heck, people are. No one stops at red lights anymore!!
-Joseeey-@reddit
Has nobody learned a lesson to NEVER leave anything they can appear valuable in the car - especially where it can be seen through the windows????
YayaDingbat@reddit
I'm sad to say this is not new. All these comments about "these days" this and that are bunk.
If you go to any populated place and leave something in view, then someone might smash a window and take it. It's not new. It's not "more brazen."
It sucks. It's happened to me. But it's normal in heavily populated, busy area.
OptimalWeakness6744@reddit
I was telling my wife that the other day I was driving through there. As much money that that area is worth, it sure does have a lot of homeless people.

“student driver” in that car is advertising you have daddy’s money and probably irresponsibly left a MacBook or other technology in the car. Whether that’s true or not I bet it played into it
creedthoughts16@reddit
Rustic has this happen quite frequently actually. Uptown is not “safe”, they have lots of incidents there…can’t even buy detergent without requesting it to be unlocked at the Walgreens down the street from there, if that’s any indication.
SlyShogo@reddit
I had my truck broken in to in a private lot with security and everything in Dallas as well. This was a lot for staff only too. The funny thing? They didn't take anything! I had my tools in there and a few other items worth money. The asshole broke my window, took the change I had in the cup holder, looked everywhere, and damaged some compartments and then just left :/

The garage was canted over at an angle, it’s walls tipped over to a perilous degree. It would look like a fun house building in a theme park if it had been painted anytime in the last thirty years, which it hadn’t. The house next door looked every bit as ramshackled as the garage. There couldn’t be anyone living there, surely?
There was a single pane of glass in the garage door, among the line of empty gap-toothed openings next to it, so I picked up a rock, contemplating the pleasing sound of shattering glass.
“We’ll get in trouble,” my friend said.
“It’s an abandoned building,” I said. “No one’s going to care.”
“You think so?” He was still querulous at the prospect of doing property damage.
“Come on, it’ll be fun,” I said.
So we pelted the door with rocks from the road until we managed to hit the pane of glass, which shattered with exactly the kind of sound that I thought it would make.
It was glorious. Until…
The old lady came belting out of the front door of the house that I would have sworn was abandoned, waving a stick at us and screaming like a banshee. My friend and I, terrified of her as much as at being caught doing a thing that we knew was wrong, ran away from her as fast as we could and didn’t go home until late in the evening for fear of leading the old lady to our houses where she could confront our parents with what we had done.
When I finally did go home, there was a policeman standing on our porch talking to my father. It was a small town, so of course the old lady knew who our parents were. I was informed that if I wanted to avoid criminal charges I was going to have to replace the window, which meant that I would have to go to work for my father to earn the money necessary to buy the window pane and have it installed.
Which I did. Not only did I work to earn the money back for her one window, we bought four window panes to replace the other broken ones that children had broken in the months before. If I remember correctly the carpenter even straightened the walls up and made the garage look like it wasn’t going to fall down; but they still didn’t paint it, which is what it really needed.
I was a criminal. I was caught. I made retribution. The injured person was made whole and better than she had been before. This is because I wasn’t shot for trespassing and damaging property.
Someone had their car broken into in a Dallas parking lot recently. More than one person has had this happen recently in Dallas, I’m sure. The victim was cynical about the Dallas police force ever doing anything to find the missing items from his car. Probably rightly cynical, who knows? A stolen briefcase isn’t going to be high on the Dallas police radar. They have real problems to deal with and not enough hands to get the real work done. Stolen property is pretty low-down on the importance list.
The conversation about the outrage of having someone steal shit out of your car turned to shooting criminals in a very short order, as these things do in the here and now. In Texas the property laws favor the property owners to a ridiculous level. At night, even in a public parking lot, you can shoot someone who is breaking into your car. On your property you can shoot people if you feel even vaguely threatened.
I know, because I’ve been following these stories for a long time.

Right. In the 90s, my car stereo and CD cases were stolen at least a dozen times, even if I had removed the stereo face. Fuck, I even left the car unlocked one time and they still broke a window. Side note, I also know multiple people who were senselessly shot and murdered by would be robbers in the late 90 back when there was a spree of shootings around lower Greenville. The call log is over 100, officers are in District 40 each night, and the calls don't stop. Significant disturbances get top priority, so small stuff gets pushed back to the end. If there is a fatality, it will take at least 4-5 hours to clear that call if everyone goes right, and you need at least 5 to 6 officers to protect the scene. But calls don't stop. They keep coming in. It's so easy for people to say they aren't doing shit, I do 10-hour shift at midnight. I am lucky to have a lunch break on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, not to mention the number of reports you “SHALL” complete before the end of your shift. Stress, lack of sleep, home issues, and ordinary people's problems like mental health issues after seeing dead bodies and other things an average person shouldn't see on a regular daily basis, not to mention how it affects you when you are dealing with babies and how it fuses with you mentally. Yet, I should not let that affect me, and I should keep taking calls like a robot. Seeing kids thrown out the window because the parents were incompetent enough to put that little one in a child restraint seat, and now I have to to work that fatality accident and sit there and keep that scene clear for a mile because few other cars may have run the baby over in the process. Still, I am supposed to brush that off and keep going. Then, at the end of your day, you are to go home and be a father, mother, husband, and wife like nothing happened. The first thing I hear is that you signed up for it. That is accurate, but there is only so much you can accomplish at the end of the day. Sorry about the rant, but if you get an opportunity, you should do a ride-along with a local agency, especially with DPD, and see what they deal with in the fine city of Dallas regularly.

It'a unfortunate but only property and not your health. Our society has a lot of positives and the negatives may be increasing but we'll be ok. Went to Oak Cliff a month ago, the Bishop Arts District, during the day on a busy weekend. My car was broken into in the two hours we were there.
I’m pretty sure they were trying to steal it and something/someone spooked them so they aborted. Pretty frustrating to say the least. Made a report and the detective even said they likely won’t catch them even though they were obviously amateurs.
I never go to Dallas this was the first time in years and I learned my lesson pretty quickly.
For those curious it’s a 2022 Challenger Hellcat Redeye so the intent to steal it was pretty obvious. Broken window, door panel scratched to high heaven, leather seats damaged, headliner damaged, scratches on the paint. Carpet damaged. All this for absolutely nothing. So destructive.

I literally saw a brand new ford truck be stolen by guys in ski masks and their getaway car on a side road in uptown. Nothing is safe.
PlaceKooky@reddit
At the Rustic no less!! Thanks Pat Green
Hobo_Champion@reddit
Even if the police catch them, they get a slap on the wrist and set free to do it again. Someone broke into my truck in broad daylight at the Hotel Intercontinental in Dallas and stole my stereo system out of it. They took their time and didn't even tear anything up, so no worry about getting caught.
Principle_Chance@reddit
Hope you didn’t have valuables or sensitive personal info in the brief case. Sorry this happened. getting worse out here
llamalovedee123@reddit
"I thought uptown was safe" nowhere is safe
Spurnout@reddit
that's not what my imaginary friend under the blankets tells me about being under the blanket
cyberbubba2000@reddit
I would have expected better at Rustic
UnknownQTY@reddit
My friend had his car stolen from the Rustic a few years ago. It seems pretty shifty.
ZeroSumGame007@reddit
That’s sucks.
Make sure to cover up your items so they don’t see them. A lot of times those simple actions can prevent this stuff.
krel08@reddit
Sorry to hear this OP. Uptown is safe as long as you aren’t a vehicle. Mine was stolen a few blocks from you in April. A lot of people(in here especially) don’t have a clue how many cars are getting stolen or broken into. Say what you want about the cops, they literally don’t have the manpower to police this.
Ridiculicious71@reddit
Dude, you cannot leave your briefcase in the car.
Dramatic-Hand6086@reddit
Three times I’ve gone to Rustic and all three times I’ve seen someone with their windows broken in the parking lot
daltxlas@reddit
Stuff like that boils my blood. Can’t have nothing.
BoomDonk@reddit
Aw man that sucks. Is stealing head units still a thing? Got mine stolen in that same area in the 90’s!
billdasmacks@reddit
When I lived in uptown the complex had an underground parking garage which I thought was safe.
One morning I wake up to drive to work and a row of cars were on blocks. I was a little offended cause my car was right in the middle of that row and was the only one that had its rims lol.
SpaceCatCadet@reddit
It always confuses me when i hear "X area is safe" If i was going to break into a house or car, would i go for the poor and bad neighborhood or the rich and nice neighborhood?
dasfoster@reddit
That really sucks. People who do this are the worst POS. Hopefully your insurance covers everything and you can put it behind you.
Texas_Raptor@reddit
That sucks. A bunch of ppl that live uptown leave their cars unlocked b/c of break ins. Uptown has fallen so hard.
hegetsme@reddit
Best way to approach this problem is to avoid attracting attention. Hide or remove your valuables so there is no visible reward and the opportunity for theft is significantly reduced
Later2theparty@reddit
Nowhere in Dallas is safe. Always hide your shit and put airtags on important/expensive items.
Phish9669@reddit
As people have said, never leave anything visible in your car. They see something, anything, they perceive has value and they’ll break your glass to take it. They don’t care. I made the mistake of leaving my gym backpack in my car not too long ago close to there and had my car broken into in the middle of the day
fuzzywuzzy1988@reddit
You need a cargo cover.
azwethinkweizm@reddit
I tell this to my neighbors all the time. Your vehicle needs to be empty. No bags, no cases, no guns, no jewelry, no electronics, nothing. Ya gotta stop giving these people a reason to stay in the area
Tuesday2017@reddit
Yah that's pretty bold in the parking lot right in front of the place
4ofheartz@reddit
I left a brand new Nike workout bag in my car. 25 years ago in Dallas, on a busy public street. Walked out to see my car window smashed with a brick. Nike bag gone. And my brand new expensive running shoes. Leave nothing visible! Now I keep my car completely empty of stuff.
truth-4-sale@reddit
I guess Dallas is going to become London, with multiple Police cams on every corner downtown.
fartwisely@reddit
Wow. I didn't know briefcases weren't allowed at the Rustic. Guess I'll leave mine at the office next visit.

You drive an X7 M, I’m sure you can afford repair on this. Take the small loss and move on.
whiteholewhite@reddit
I’m happy I live outside of Dallas and can pop in to visit. I’ll Uber in because I hate paying for parking and this kinda shit.
Special-Finger2358@reddit
Sorry this happened to you
fridahl@reddit
Wow. Wow. Wow. I’m so so sorry.
NoSpecific1178@reddit
You live in a metroplex of 8 million people. Welcome to city life.
aspapu@reddit
Were you murdered? If so, really sorry.

The bright side here is the twin turbo locomotive is intact and ready to perform.
Glass is a quick day in the shop. Have fun in the loaner and in the future, hide your stuff.
intetsu@reddit (OP)
It’s a monster. They actually tried to break every driver side window too but they couldn’t get in. So glad it’s just glass though

strangecargo@reddit
Sucks that it happened but there’s a difference between safe and open to simple theft of convenance.
First-Delay8239@reddit
lol, no. They were probably walking by, saw it, smash and grab.
At least the statistic was theft and not a shooting.
PossibleOk5302@reddit
It's really not that hard to not leave things out in the open. I won't even leave an empty bag out.
superwoman7588@reddit
Take rideshare. And pay driver directly aince they don't make jack. You'll save money.
Ok-Demand-6070@reddit
This is awful. It happens everywhere. People are desperate and brazen.
