Build Advice? 1964 Mercury Comet

I have this 64 merc comet 289 fastback car I bought for cheap that has minimal rust is a complete car with a strong engine and tranny. Once I got it home and looked at it for a few hours I was able to determine that the front driver quarter, door, and rear quarter have been replaced. In the pictures you can see where the new quarter was installed. It’s not to bad but the big issues is that the trunk lid sits uneven because of the quarter panel. I measured a bunch of points on the unibody and it’s all true and straight structurally. I bought this car with the intent of adding subframe connectors and dropping a 347 small block in front of the stock c4. I plan for this car to never get painted or fix any of the panel issues if I decide to keep it. I can always rip the motor out and find a better car later if I wanted to paint it. This model does bring good money when finished but I mainly bought it because I really liked the look and minimal rust, not to mention in fastback form they are pretty rare. I’m thinking of building this thing similar to roadkill’s crusher Impala in the sense that that body is not super straight but it has big power and is a great doughnut and burnout machine. Am I making a poor decision by wanting to build this into a hot rod or not? I know if I rebuild the carb and put a water pump in it. I could flip in right now and make 2k so I’m trying to make a decision whether or not I should go through with the build?

I bet one of those dent guys that use those hammers know how to fix your 1/4. Or if it’s fixable. Are you thinking it was welded on half ass?
I don’t have one of those dudes yet. Need one. Can’t figure out the term to google 😂

Yeah I think it was fixed half assed

You should go see a pro. Maybe they know how to fix it more simply from its current state

Ford stuffed an FE into the 64 Fairlane and called it the Thunderbolt. Yours is the same car. Nothing like a big block!
KnownJuggernaut5924@reddit (OP)
Yeah but small block aluminum heads will keep the car nice and light.

Is it a 3-on-the -tree?

64 Comet is one of my favorite cars of all time. Whatever you decide, good luck!

Yeah man build whatever you want, one thing you'll realize is that you'll be able to pull the motor, trans, rear end out etc if you want to put it in a better car later.

Go for it. It has the retired street machine/bootlegger look pre installed.

Personally I think these are getting to the age/era where you should try to keep them original or restored not restomodded into a race car. It looks like it could be painted, minimally fixed up and be a very fun weekend car to just drive and enjot in near stock form.. and be able to afford gas and not constantly fix breaking high horsepower crap. Plenty of 80s malaise mobiles to make a dragster or burnout machine.

Hard disagree. There's already a completely stock one somewhere sitting in a barn or garage or something that grandma owned and is all original. That one can stay like that. This ones been wrecked, reskinned, and hacked up already. Do whatever the hell you want with it.

I agree

Every car build is a bad decision. If you love the car and want to build it, do so. If not, sell it and buy the car you want…
