Coming to Plano for a conference, trying to figure out how far out I can stay and still walk at night

Hi all, I am coming next month to a conference at 5600 granite Pkwy and I am trying to figure out how walkable/safe the area around there is. Hotel prices are significantly cheaper if I am willing to go out 1 or so miles from where the conference will be.
I am from NYC, so I am used to sketchy, just want to know what to expect.
MarvVanZandt@reddit
Stay either in downtown plano or shops of legacy if you want late night walking in plano.
Realistic-Molasses-4@reddit
You won't get robbed, but there's a significant change you'll be run over by a Dodge Ram.
Ok-Scratch-7452@reddit
I came to say this! Please just Uber đŁ
osamabinwankn@reddit
They meant to say a Tesla. Itâs 99.9% Tesla model Yâs with Student Driver stickers over here.
Infinite-Candidate73@reddit
Shouldnât have any problems as far as safety. Very safe area
Lankydick@reddit
Thereâs a Sandman hotel on Parkwood close by that is on the same side of the road. Maybe 1/3 mile walk but youâre in a really safe area so nothing to worry about.
Gedalya@reddit (OP)
This is actually super helpful. Thank you, might work best for me!

We don't WALK in Texas. We drive. Our own cars.
poopyourpantsman@reddit
Donât walk .. Plano has turned to shit⌠homeless creeps everywhere
Saddleonup@reddit
Lol, that's probably the safest mile in the U.S.
ChewyHoneyBadger@reddit
Legacy west is close. Shops of legacy. Boardwalk. If you take a cab, you can chef out the Star and Grandscape areas.
Area is one of the safest in the US, so I hear. All that extra money from corporations for police
heinzenfeinzen@reddit
was quickly skimming over comments and hit yours: Legacy west CLOSED??? WTH? When did that happen?
re-read: close not closed. whew
CoffeeAndToastPlease@reddit
If hotel is less pricy in the shops at legacy area (look around parkwood and legacy), then you can walk around the shops and even cross over to legacy west. You would be crossing a major tollway but there is a pedestrian walkway that has been built to make it easier. Also, parkwood runs alongside granite park and shops at legacy
Justinacube@reddit
I used to bartend at that Hilton at Granite Park. Itâs a nice area. The boardwalk on the backside of it has restaurants there that usually close around 10 during weekdays. The shops at legacy a little south of it have all the night life and itâs a safe area. That area is very walkable as most people do there. It would definitely be cheaper a mile or two away and Uber in. Worst case, an Uber will be a 10-15 minute drive into where you need to be. That Hilton is definitely pricy lol.
rickybobbyscrewchief@reddit
I agree with this take. You'll have virtually zero safety concerns anywhere in this area. But it's not really built to be super walkable between areas. Within Legacy West and even crossing over to the East side of the Dallas North Tollway to Shops at Legacy, it's all very walkable. But even just the short distance from there up to Granite Park isn't really what most big city people think of walking. Just do a google street view from the conference location in Granite Park down to one of the first restaurants South of it in Shops at Legacy, for instance Mexican Sugar (which is pretty good upscale Mexican, btw). You'll see you pass through just a lot of corporate office building areas, past parking garages and parking lots. Totally within walkable *distance* if you had to, but not what most people would normally walk just because it's not really on a busy city sidewalk/street like you'd find in a downtown/city center type of area. Granite Park has a few food options, but for going out nearby, you'll probably want to head just across the highway to places like Earl's Kitchen or Haywire in what is known as "Legacy West". The good news is that both sides of the Tollway (Legacy West and the original Shops at Legacy side on the East) are some of the better going out/eating out/shopping areas of the North side suburbs. Lots of cheaper, but still perfectly fine chain hotels just on the NE corner of the 121/DNT interchange. That makes them very accessible by uber to your conference as well as the good entertainment areas, but you won't want to walk to them or cross the major highways (underpasses with stop lights on the frontage roads, but still).
Justinacube@reddit
You definitely put it better, with greater detail. Take all of this advice, OP.
royalooozooo@reddit
I wouldnât call it âzero safety concernsâ as a car will hit a pedestrian and think itâs a speed bump without stopping
strog91@reddit
I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that weâre not used to pedestrians in Texas, so when you cross a street, you should assume that every car canât see you and isnât going to stop even if they do see you.
SportingDirector@reddit
Texas drivers are notorious for...not being great
evilcyclist@reddit
Iâm was hit in a cross walk on 15h Street. I was told it was my fault. I said I was in a cross walk traffic had a red light. I had the white walking guy light. Not good enough I was told. Drivers making a red on red only look left and not for pedestrians.
budget_walrus97@reddit
Do you want to be right or alive? You just need to assume that when youre in the suburbs walking on busy streets where there are no pedestrians that cars arent looking for you.
chucknorrisinator@reddit
I mean, sounds like they looked, were in the crosswalk, and then got hit by someone who was stopped, then turned (assuming the person actually stopped at the red light before turning). I donât know how you expect a pedestrian to avoid that trap.
You can walk defensively all you want, all it takes is one moron in a Yukon, drinking their Starbies and yelling into their phone to murder you.
Darth_Jason@reddit
What? No.
1.) It doesnât sound like they looked.
2.) Youâre assuming. You have an opinion that contradicts the information available to us.
3.) Screen name and word selection lead one to believe this person was riding a bicycle through a crosswalk without looking and is upset about it.
It used to be called âMain Character Syndrome.â
Also, reading. Top-bottom, left-right.
Tylenol ~ headaches. Midol ~ cramps.
chucknorrisinator@reddit
Just to clarify, youâre allowed to assume he was on a bike because of his username but Iâm not allowed to assume he looked at the road when he narrates looking at the crossing signal?
Someone hit him from behind as he crossed the street and itâs somehow his fault. Idiotic car-brain strikes again. There is no way to defensively walk against this situation. You gonna knock on the window of every car at a red light and confirm theyâre not gonna murder you?
evilcyclist@reddit
I rather stand up for my rights than just lose them.
_DONT_PANIC_42_@reddit
Sorry that happened, hope youâre better. Iâll admit I once did this, right on red without looking left. I came a lot closer than I should have to hitting a ladyâs dog. Luckily she saw me not look and stayed back. I felt like such an asshole. I look right every time now.
royalooozooo@reddit
Lawyer up and that tune will change real quick

Hey buddy, nobody walks in Texas.
white_castle@reddit
yeah plano is not very walkable. iâd look at satellite maps on places youâre thinking of staying to see whatâs around it and if it is walkable. the mariott (i think?) at granite park has a lot of things close by
janejacobs1@reddit
Find an Airbnb near Planoâs historic downtown, the mostâactually onlyâtruly walkable area in the city. Bars, restaurants, public plaza and beautiful gem of a public park, all very friendly and safe. Plus DART red line access if you want to venture south into Dallas.
Feeling-Scientist703@reddit
air bnb is cancer, please leave plano
one_is_enough@reddit
This is nowhere near downtown Plano. 17 minute drive with tolls, 24 without. And someone from NYC is not likely to get much out of downtown Plano.
Lemondrop168@reddit
Agreed. It's like two blocks at best.
acaii@reddit
Legacy West, 20 min walk, on the direct other side of the highway (west). Decent stuff to hang around and do. Take an Uber to Grandscape if you want even more entertainment
1millerce1@reddit
I think you get the gist from all the other posters; quite safe, disinteresting, and not very walkable.
I'd like to add, if you're really all that concerned, it is Texas and you are welcome to open carry a firearm. If you do, look for signage at each building entrance to see if your carrying inside the building is prohibited. Do NOT attempt to conceal carry without a permit- Texas has a very wide reciprocation policy with other states (but from recollection, New York is not one).
royalooozooo@reddit
Please donât be the idiot that walks around with a gun.
GrannyAppletree2023@reddit
Good news: There's nothing sketchy remotely near there, don't even worry.
Bad news: Aside from the little boardwalk with restaurants near Granite Parkway, there's nothing particularly walkable nearby. I mean, you can walk, it's safe, but there's nothing fun to see or do and it's not that pedestrian-friendly.
royalooozooo@reddit
Also to add, Non pedestrian friendly as in sometimes sidewalks donât exist.
Echo the other comments in this thread, we arenât used to pedestrians. Either your car broke down and you need help or youâre homeless.
There used to be foot traffic/pedestrians that used to go between legacy west and the shops at legacy. Not sure on how that looks anymore since I donât frequent that area anymore (I got kids now)
PunkRockDude@reddit
Not too far from other walkable or short Uber like Legacy, Hall Sculpture Garden, Frisco Rough Riders area, etc. some are walkable with a long walk. Canât really walk across the highway though just north of there.
The areas around here usually make the list of the safest cities in the country.
GrannyAppletree2023@reddit
Oh, also! Be sure that you check your walking route on maps before you actually book. Some things that appear close together are farther if you walk because there are big stretches with no sidewalks and so on. (I live about a mile away from there so I know what I'm talking about!)
Lemondrop168@reddit
Yes! No sidewalks is highly likely lol we're built so car-centric they donât even bother to put sidewalks many places.
mass922@reddit
It's less than a mile to Legacy.
mangoburrito@reddit
Legacy west is right under the tollway!
GrannyAppletree2023@reddit
That's true, you could walk over there.
ranjithd@reddit

Donut1984@reddit
All these posts saying its not very walkable, in relation to other major metros sure, but Shops at Legacy, Legacy West and surroundings areas would definitely be walkable, and in October a great time of year to actually do so. With plenty to do within a 1.5 mile radius id def consider that area 100% walkable. I also do agree with others that you should also be defensive when crossing streets, probably a good idea everywhere.
wbd3434@reddit
Extremely safe. Not very walkable.

They are adjacent to a bike path. You can walk from that hotel clear across Plano on that bike path. Nothing sketchy about it.
papaya_boricua@reddit
Wait up, where is the conference? Everyone sending you to Legacy West but you didn't specify where the conference is? Also, look into Hotels in The Colony, specifically the area near Grandscape. a lot cheaper than Plano, about 5 min away from that Legacy West area by car and they have a free shuttle service. Plano is really big so make sure you know where the conference is relative to hotel. Grandscape is the new entertainment area in DFW with lots of things to do (is like a mini Vegas but the new entertainment portion and clean, nice and no gambling).
TrillDaddyChill@reddit
I'm upvoting everything that says Legacy. Legacy West is fancier, but Shops at Legacy on the East side of the tollway is nice too. You should have plenty of options to eat, and places to get drinks or do some shopping on both sides. The Cambria Hotl is decently priced, and a 15 minute walk from your conference.
Weak-Ganache-1566@reddit
No area near that spot is sketchy. But thereâs no public transportation and thereâs oasisâs of walkable areas. Plan on taking an uber to a location, like legacy west, and walking there
cienmontaditos@reddit
Uber can be weirdly expensive depending on the time of day. I would get a hotel within walking distance to the conferenceÂ
Separate_Place1595@reddit
Planos is basically the new oak Cliff. I wouldn't walk around there at dark. Stick to Frisco or the legacy area. Mckinney is the safest in the area so go over there.
Brilliant-Both@reddit
Plano and vicinity is more of a driving city !
Icy-Essay-8280@reddit
Just find an area well lit. I've walked in Plano with no issues but I am seeing more and more homeless around. Hope you enjoy your stay!
AggravatingMath717@reddit
Youâre not gonna be in NYC my manâŚ. Donât come here planning to walk we donât walk this is Texas
one_is_enough@reddit
Be sure to factor in the cost of ubering against the difference in remote/local hotel. You may be better off paying more for a hotel within walking distance.
Significant_Catch807@reddit
You can go to legacy west area where there is nice restaurants and food court with live music on weekends.
mass922@reddit
You're in the most "walkable" part of the city.
Stay at the Hilton or Staybridge right next to your venue and you're an easy pedestrian-friendly walk to dozens of shops, eats, and more.
Legacy West is the premier spot for entertainment but that whole area will suit you well.
Narcess@reddit
Ok so you are super close to the Boardwalk and it has a few options for food and beers. Other than that you will need to freaking Uber. Walking in Dallas is like walking in LA... Nobody walks!
Like me and some of the others posted nothing is super close, but a 15 buck Uber/Lyft ride and you are in Legacy or Grandscape...etc.
Ancient_Control_3089@reddit
Plano isnt really a walking city at all.
oneone0ome@reddit
If you want to be in walking distance youâll want to stay at the Hilton in Granite Park. The renaissance @ Legacy West also is nice, but youâre looking at 30 min walk minimum. Not a terrible walk but you will be crossing a highway and walking along busy streets
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
That area Granite Park is just a bunch of corporate buildings, very little of much else (some restaurants to the north) but the walkable area of Plano is to the west and south - along Legacy Drive, including Legacy West, which is a walkable area. All that stuff is about 1.5 miles or so south and west, which would not be a great walk but it would be safe. If you can get a hotel to the south along Legacy Drive, you could probably do ok. You can uber (or walk) up to your conference. The walk would kind of suck, because you'd just be passing office building parking lots, but it's possible.
muthaflicka@reddit
Depends on where youre staying, if it's around that Hilton in that area then the bars and restaurants are within walking distance. Pretty safe as well. But like a lot of suburbs, almost everything else closes early here in Plano on weekdays.
pollyanna15@reddit
Can you tell us what hotels youâre considering so we can give you a better idea of how safe/walkable it is?
Yartvid@reddit
Itâs not sketchy at all, but people out here are absolutely NOT looking out for pedestrians. Be really careful crossing streets, even in neighborhoods or side roads.
Aside from that, thatâs a really cool part of town. Plano is NOT a walkable city but thereâs plenty of stuff around that area.
mechasquare@reddit
The area is safe, it's mostly corp buildings. That being said, trying to cross any major highway can be risky due to nonattentive drivers. I wouldn't have any issues walking from your place down to the Shops of Legacy which is south and another area of shops and restaurants. That area generally has sidewalks but for sure stay off the walking on the roads if you can.
Kevdasev3@reddit
Weird question, are you coming for like a toyota conference or something with vehicles? I got some fsmily coming down for a conference too lol. Plano is very safe, its actually an amazing area that youre staying in. Enjoy your time!
Dautista@reddit
Texas suburbs are not walkable. I recommend a rental car or Uber.
Itâs as safe as can be, itâs just not very pedestrian friendly, and our public transit could use a lot of work.
