Eurocrash kinda rubbish?

So was it just me, or was the newest GT episode kind of a let down? Just managed to sit through it, (actually had to forcefield to watch post 45 mins just to see if it improved). Some of the locations were great, but the cars and the show itself were a bit of a let down, just felt super underwhelming and only about 10 mins of the total runtime was entertaining.
Is it just me?

Eurocrash is the FUNNIEST special they have ever made on TG and GT. The cars, the museum, the soviet f1, the Mansel wax figure. "Maybe if you weren't so fat!" It's not even debatable. The museum alone is most we've ever seen them laugh.

You people praising this episode must be delusional. It’s by far, like 1000% the worst, boring, most mailed in special these guys have ever done.
It’s painfully obvious this was a last minute money grab with very little effort put into it. Or maybe just to fulfill the contract.
Painfully brutal to watch. Very disappointed as a top gear fan since day 1….

James May is "still not here"?
nigaz_in_paris@reddit
it was one of the worst if not the worst special, there was little to no interaction between them outside of the scripted events, i know its maybe more entartaining to watch scripted events for the "broad" audience, but come on, there isn't a single enjoyable scripted point. Outside of the scripting, James was outside of the whole special, it was like watching 2 different episodes, empty feeling episode without bromace. Dissappinted.
BoTamByloCiemno@reddit
I seriously disagree with that
It's clear they took a different direction with this special, It was more of a nice road trip with some history and interesting places. Not an action movie with explosions in it.
kalel9010@reddit
Compare this to their top gear special USA road trips. This was not even close to that quality.
BoTamByloCiemno@reddit
Yeah... It's almost as If they're getting older and they don't feel like being chased by a bunch of people.
Or that they just wanted to have chill roadtrip.
kalel9010@reddit
Nah they proved they still have it in them with Mongolia and seamen.
BoTamByloCiemno@reddit
Which were filmed earlier?
I genuinely think It was a good special. If you disagree, It's ok, let's just agree to disagree
michaelloda9@reddit
No, it was superb
kalel9010@reddit
It really wasn't. The locations while pretty were still just boring Europe, they were on plain roads the entire time, It was extremely scripted and James wasn't with the other 2 through 90% of it. I'm hoping the next special in the sahara is a return to the style that made them great. I want to see them together the whole time, I want interesting vehicles and I want it to be somewhat of an off-road struggle with beautiful natural areas.
camerongb@reddit
I know what to expect being a big time enjoyer of the trio, but this special was just kind of dry and boring imo. All the repeated scenes of James getting overtaken by trucks with fake horn sounds added was just getting too much. Had to bare through it. Some funny moments, sure. But nothing like the previous specials. I think that J and R could've picked more "interesting" cars. Hammond's just felt like his typical go to USA/Muscle and Clarkson didn't go something wildly powerful/inappropriate like we'd expect from the king of speed and power.
Your mileage may vary but I didn't enjoy it overall vs other specials.
anonymalos@reddit
Oh definitely just you mate.
_LegaliseGayWeed_@reddit
It definitely isn't just him.
HerrMatthew@reddit
For me it's up there with the Mongolia special.
I appreciate that they had more "off-the-road" events in this special. Some specials are somewhat boring when there's too much of them just driving on the highways and talking about why their car is good.
I appreciate the latter bits too, but in some cases, it's far too overdone.
WelNix2007@reddit
I almost stopped watching after 30 mins as the 1st 30 mins was old drawn-out jokes about communism which just didn't stick but after that they thankfully stopped and overall, it was an ok special of the lads visiting the NATO/EU States of Eastern Europe
stanleyipkiss@reddit
It was weak. Don't give in to the people who worship the trio no matter how bad. There was a huge push-back to the India Special as well. This Eurocrash was bad. No doubt about it.
BoTamByloCiemno@reddit
So basically
"I'm right and you're wrong"?
Milospesh@reddit
much doubt, nice bait.
mybookismycity@reddit
2nd best Grand Tour special, after Mongolia
FcukTheTories@reddit
Mozambique is still better for me. I’ve still never laughed as hard in my life as when the water from the tank poured over James for the first time.
Milospesh@reddit
thats high praise, i would put this 3rd.
bolivia
mongolia
eurocrash.
driftywiftypleb@reddit
If your including TG specials then that is really high praise.
SynnerSaint@reddit
Not the best, but I still LedMAO the whole way through
fudgeller83@reddit
Its interesting to see different views...
For me, it was probably my favourite special since they left the tent.
I do agree possibly with the cars though. Richard in particular could have been in a Ford Focus for all it mattered beyond him introducing it, and Jeremy's wasn't that much more impactful to anything either.
On the other hand, they were always on the move and the trip was always progressing. While they did chuck another car down a ski slope, it wasn't a super drawn out piece like in the last special which really went downhill when they got their 'caravans' to destroy.
I don't think we'll ever get back to the rawness of the Vietnam/Bolivia/Botswana era specials, especially when they're traveling on European motorways, but it still sits comfortably towards the top end of the TGT era specials (nothing is ever beating Mongolia)
Sea_-@reddit
Actually i didn’t mind the cars. Growing up playing gran turismo made me love weird unknown cars.
Milospesh@reddit
well said.
meluku@reddit
I agree about the cars. They were a letdown, wish they had more of a ‘theme’ with them instead of just those three/four underwhelming cars they drove.
Overall I liked it a lot though. It wasn’t their best but I was laughing so hard at some points. I absolutely loved the locations this time too but my family is from Slovakia so maybe I’m biased about that lol
Regular_Rutabaga4789@reddit
Might just be you fella, I loved it.
gregsapopin@reddit
I just felt bad for James.
dedasdude@reddit
You must lack a sense of humour
runerx@reddit
At least there weren't fake flames....
Milospesh@reddit
So what specials do you like then ?
there's always some idiot who hates on perfection, it's your opinion, it's in the minority and it's WRONG but it's yours.
AGBadger@reddit (OP)
i mean I would rate *every* top gear special above this (aside from the india special). and the only Grand Tour specials I would put below it are the Scotland and the Lockdown specials.
The cars felt kind of pointless and bland, James' car was never going to make it past the first motorway, and most of the journey was just skipped over because it was all just motorway driving.
If you want my personal top 5 -
Botswana
Vietnam
Mongolia
Colombia
USA (first one)
I prefer either the cars or the journey to be interesting, in this special neither of those things were.
Rogthgar@reddit
Thought it was great because they do everything I expect them to do on one of these kinds of trips. But I will admit I was most of all reminded of the Seamen special, because Hammond and Clarkson were half a day a head of James doing all the interesting bits and James is left far behind battling with and underpowered engine and various mechanical failures.
Abrakaca@reddit
It's not BAD, but not so good. But, when you compare to I do no Africa Special, then is bad They getting old, maybe a script isn't good, maybe energy lvl isn't good enough I don't know....
It's make me sad...
bullitt07@reddit
Not very good imo.
radiobrat78@reddit
Laughed more at this one than most of TGT, thoroughly enjoyed it!!
nitsuga62@reddit
I had a lot of big laughs
bl0odredsandman@reddit
Same. I don't think it was their best episode, but there were a couple of times I had some good laughs. I liked it.
