Kremlin warns of escalation if US allows Kyiv to hit Russia with long-range missiles

Kremlin Warning: The Kremlin has warned that allowing Ukraine to use long-range Western missiles against targets in Russia would escalate the conflict and provoke a strong Russian response.
Western Involvement: Moscow views such a decision as increasing direct Western involvement in the war, which has been ongoing for over two years.
Potential Russian Response: Russian officials, including Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov and Vyacheslav Volodin, suggest that Russia might use more powerful weapons against Ukraine if long-range missiles are supplied.
U.S. Hesitation: The U.S. has previously been cautious about providing long-range missiles to Ukraine due to concerns of escalating the conflict.
Possible Shift in U.S. Stance: President Joe Biden has indicated that the U.S. is reconsidering its position on supplying long-range missiles, stating that the administration is "working that out now."
Missile Capabilities: The ATACMS (U.S.) and Storm Shadow (UK) missiles have ranges of up to 190 miles (305 km) and 155 miles (249 km), respectively.
Current Use: Ukraine is already using similar weapons against Russian targets within Ukraine but seeks to target deeper inside Russia.
Russian Retaliation: Russia has stated it would target and destroy any new deliveries of long-range missiles to Ukraine, citing increased dangers and risks.

Russia shouldn't have invaded then. Everyone knows long range attacks will escalate the conflict. Russia has been using rockets for a while now. I don't expect the Ukrainians to abide by some sort of fair game rules.

(Repost of a comment I just made:)
Russia spent 8 years doing military exercises on the border with Ukraine, nothing ever happened, until it did. In February 2022 I was laughing at the idea that they would invade.
This conflict has been escalating month after month, year after year. Now the US is about to give permission for Ukraine to use US missiles for long range strikes deep inside of Russia, and Moscow knows it's coming. Just a year ago Biden refused to give tanks for fear that it would trigger WW3, now he wants to approve missile strikes on Moscow.
Then the US can just transfer unlimited numbers of long range missiles, something Russia won't survive, they're too big to protect all their vulnerable targets. They're already suffering to Ukrainian drones, against waves of Tomahawks they don't stand a chance, Ukraine will destroy their economic base, it won't matter if Russia takes Donetsk or not, they'll be broke.
Putin's only chance will be to prove that there is a red line, and only dropping a nuke will achieve that. Anything else will just prove that he's bluffing, nuclear deterrent only works if the other side thinks you'll actually do it. The number of people arguing that Russian nukes don't work is surreal.
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit
We are not really talking about long-range missiles or Tomahawks here. We are talking about ATACMS most likely with a range just too short to reach Moscow. Russia will pull back their planes too late as usual and lose a couple to an Ukrainian ATACMS, but will continue to fire into Ukraine from the Caspian Sea and surrounding areas.
ToePasteTube@reddit
What if they fire them from the newly invaded territories? Wouldn't they be able to reach Moskow?
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit
Don't think so, the most north-eastern part of Ukraine proper is closer to Moscow than the occupied territories. They'd need to expand that by a lot.
Key_Equipment3150@reddit
I think NATO or really just Europe in general needs to prove our red lines exist too. The war will escalate too if Russia wins. Russia will be further incentivized to push further into Ukraine and mostly likely eastern Europe if they "win".
NATO is wisely teaching Russia that they are the party that is escalating this war. NATO will follow in step to show that we are not backing down.
Keep in mind, it is obvious that Russia's invasion makes Russia less safe. This war is not helping their security. They might recognize that this war costs far more than they can afford in the long run.
texteditorSI@reddit
No, having NATO puppet states at the border makes Russia less safe, which is why they were forced to invade in the first place
SMTecanina@reddit
No one forced those countries to join NATO.
Finland and Sweden did not join until after the full scale invasion.
There are a bunch of countries that were part of the Soviet Union and former Warsaw Pact members that decided to join NATO to protect themselves.
texteditorSI@reddit
The US has been interfering in former Soviet states since before WW2 happened, acting like everything political there happens because of people's natural inclinations is ridiculous.
Ukraine wasn't making holidays for Nazi collaborators that only a small percentage of Ukrainians supported in their heyday until the west started bringing in our NGOs
SMTecanina@reddit
And the former Soviet Union and current Federation has been interfering with the West. It's a game that all parties participate in.
If NATO expansion was such a problem for putin and russia, they would have stopped Finland and Sweden from joining NATO.
Especially Finland.
HereticBanana@reddit
Russia was forced to invade because of NATO borders getting closer to Russia?
Have you seen what happened? A few more thousand KMs of NATO border with Russia. That's 100% on Russia.
Well done Putin, what a master strategist.
wyocrz@reddit
Manufactured consent.
HereticBanana@reddit
Russia won't use nukes because it would give NATO an excuse to join the fight directly.
Putin needs the threat of NATO to maintain control in Russia. He don't want to actually have a war with NATO.
He's been bluffing for decades.
US intelligence knew Putin was going to invade. Biden straight up said it publicly. The sharing of that intel is one of the reasons Ukraine survived the initial invasion.
Mr_E_Monkey@reddit
Before I get into this post, I just want to say that even if I don't fully agree with you, I appreciate the earnest discussion. I sometimes come across as being argumentative when I don't mean to be, so if I do that here, let me know and I will try to fix it.
So, that being said, I think I do agree with you, in part, but I also disagree partially.
There's pretty much always going to be some escalation in war; when a side doesn't meet their objectives within a period of time, they'll generally either step up their attacks, or call the whole thing off, yeah, it's an overgeneralization, but the basic idea is there. More weapons are used on more targets when they become available, and so on. To the point, though, as you said, a year ago, Biden refused to give tanks for fear that it would trigger WW3. Eventually though, he did give those tanks...and no WW3. Ukrainian forces took ground in Kursk Oblast -- hostile troops in Russian territory was feared to trigger WW3, until it didn't. Ukraine has launched drone strikes against Moscow, with no WW3.
I am not trying to dismiss your concern out-of-hand, because obviously, even if it's a low risk, the potential of harm from that risk is enormous, so it should be taken seriously.
Part of the problem is that there have been so many red lines that have been crossed without the kind of horrific consequences that have been threatened. Those kinds of threats become empty when they aren't backed up. It's the boy who cried wolf.
Maybe, but at the same time, I think there is good reason to come to that conclusion. As one redditor noted earlier, the US, for example, spends about as much on maintaining nuclear weapons as Russia's entire yearly defense budget prior to their invasion in Ukraine. But it's not just the cost to maintain the weapons in a state of readiness, but all of the support structure behind it. And while sure, we can talk about a bloated budget spending more than is absolutely necessary, but we've seen how well Russia spends its defense budget, too. It's not hard to imagine that funding might be "diverted" from the one weapon program most of their officers probably never thought would ever actually be used as more than a threat.
I will say, though, that I think it is more likely that the nukes on their submarines are functional, if any of them are.
ctmansfield@reddit
Russia knows that using nukes will change the game dramatically. They can’t continue to fight without the support of China and if they use nukes China will NOT be pleased. Same with NK and Iran. They don’t want to get pulled into that because they know they’d lose big time.
Using nukes will also not accomplish anything unless they can kill Zelenskyy but even if they did there would be massive implications with the west.
Putin is losing even if he’s still taking territory in the Donbas. The only way this ends is with a Russian withdrawal. The only question is how bad things have to get before either Putin or the Russian people say enough is enough?
Слава Україні! Героям слава!
AdAdministrative4388@reddit
Tbh there is no strategic purpose to using a nuke.. they are just literally scare tactics. The entire front line is so spread out that it makes zero sense. Nukes are used when the Russian state is as risk of being overthrown.. nobody is going to take Moscow.. nobody wants Moscow. But threats is all they have.
dsbtc@reddit
Yeah their bluster does make it hard to predict, because it's likely there is SOME point at which it's actually a legitimate threat.
Let's say they do escalate to nukes a year from now, the US has said that they would then become directly involved in the conflict with non-nuclear means. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that this means that Russia would be driven from Ukraine, including Crimea, and the Black Sea.
What might their response be at that point?
vogut@reddit
I hope you're wrong, but I think you're 100% right
ToePasteTube@reddit
Why does everyone think they haven't maintained their arsenal like the Russians are some bad cartoon character? Where is this coming from? What did I miss? They are still using their obnoxiously loud and old airplanes, they still work. How would they still use them if they can't maintain them? Or what's the difference with maintaining weapons?

Like buying and using ballistic missiles to hit Ukraine, perhaps from Iran? There is only one party escalating, and since 2014, it has been only Russia. They will not stop until they are completely incapacitated.
WittyDefense41@reddit
Yeah allowing NATO to set up missile silos and biolabs along your border isn’t escalating at all. Those are the innocent actions of saints.
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit
Does anyone still believe this story about the bioweapon labs?
WittyDefense41@reddit
The Pentagon and Victoria Nuland have both acknowledged it. Try to keep up.
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit

lol. Are the biolabs in the room with us now?
WittyDefense41@reddit
The Pentagon admitted to funding 46 biolabs in Ukraine used to research certain pathogens and diseases. This was made public on 6/9/22. About three months after it was acknowledged by Victoria Nuland during a televised congressional hearing on 3/11/22. Try to keep up.
UtopianPablo@reddit
A "biolab" is not a bioweapons research facility lol. If you get a blood sample taken at the doctor, they will test it in a biolab. This is all propaganda from Russia that pre-dates the Ukraine war.
https://www.npr.org/2022/03/25/1087910880/biological-weapons-far-right-russia-ukraine
This is straight up Russian propaganda that Qanon and Russian stooges like Tucker Carlson have pushed.
WittyDefense41@reddit
First they didn’t exist, now they exist but are only used for to test blood samples. Right. Why would Victoria Nuland in her own words be concerned about Russian soldiers taking control of these labs, when they are merely used to test blood samples? Why would the Pentagon provide funding for such labs, if there is no military/defensive use? WAKEY WAKEY.
UtopianPablo@reddit
If these are military biolabs, wouldn't Ukraine have used those weapons when it actually got invaded? Or maybe you think it has been using them and it's just not reported? Wouldn't Putin be screaming if biological weapons were used against him?
WittyDefense41@reddit
They were developing ethic-specific pathogens and diseases to be deployed against the Rus ethnicity. This had to be stopped before it was ready to be deployed. And it was. There was literally no other choice than to use military action to deal with this.
UtopianPablo@reddit
Oh man it sure is a good thing that there's only one ethnicity in Russia then! And really good that all those ethnicities are safely within Russia's borders.
Oh actually, there are more ethnicities in Russia than any other country? NO WAY!

Russia’s already engaged with the use of long range ballistic missiles on civilian centers in Ukraine. Outside of nuclear stockpiles, they’ve pretty much already exhausted their most devastating offensive capabilities and demands more ammo from… North Korea… Iran…

CoreyDenvers@reddit
Nuking London would just make us angry.
The Russians always seem to forget, they only have two, maybe three cities tops that are worth us nuking in response.

I now doubt Putin even has the launch codes to his nukes. Some lunatic pacifist probably deleted them after the USSR fell. Even if he did have the codes these missiles likely have not been maintained at all or had parts stripped off of them and scrapped for a quick dollar. Hell the Soviet Union may have been lying about the amount of bombs they’ve had this entire time and all of the real ones were dismantled for reactor fuel back in the 90”s. I’m equally afraid of whatever bio weapons Russia may have too.
wyocrz@reddit
This is the fear. Nuclear strategy has to do with delegation: I don't doubt someone has the launch codes.
crusoe@reddit
The US has 1/2 the nuclear warheads of Russia and our nuclear forces budget is the same size as the ENTIRE Russian defense budget
They have NOT been keeping them working.
texteditorSI@reddit
It's funny that you think that our military forking over a shitload of money to private corporations means we somehow have better systems when in reality we've been paying 16x markup on things like simple artillery shells because contractors can basically name their price
WillBottomForBanana@reddit
While I also doubt the russian nuclear arsenal has been properly maintained, the amount of comfort this gives me is small. The odds that they all work is absolutely tiny. But the odds that they all fail with out a global catastrophe is so so so much smaller. If they blow up over russia or if they blow up at launch, these are failures, but still extremely big problems for the world. If they don't go off they could still smear radioactive material across a big distance.
And bio weapons are also troubling. delivery might fail, but I doubt the weapon material itself has stopped working.
Obviously most of these failure scenarios are better than a successful attack with these weapons on Ukraine. And I am not (as I always am not) suggesting that the still real danger of these weapons suggests that we should coddle or appease russia.
Only that the potential danger for a globally impacting tragedy remains very real.
Unfair_Bunch519@reddit
Bio weapons need to be refrigerated, I doubt Russia has maintained cool storage with no temperature fluctuations for the past 30 years. They likely have containers full of smelly paste.

I love ruzzian propaganda. Good for helping vacate my bowels.
America has engaged in a nice little flex in the last few days. Some of you may have noticed some lovely shots of F-18s and F-15s fully rigged out with 4 Aim-174s plus 4 Sidewinders. That was a warning.
Early in the war President Biden made a mistake in announcing support policy that he acknowledged was deliberately limited in reaction to ruzzian propaganda, and to some extent he has continued to react to this day on such basis.
So ruzzia has henceforth continued their campaign of escalation bluster feeling they have an audience in the US President and administration (especially that idiot Jake Sullivan).
But I sense that as time progresses it has become less effective, and with the transfer of Iranian ballistic missiles to ruzzia a reason has been provided for America and other reluctant allies to shed all the gloves.

Got to love the undefined escalation from the side already playing dirty. Any serious escalation like the use of battlefield nukes in Ukraine and the US has its own escalation (I.e. an overwhelming air campaign to prevent any gain from the Russian action).
