Who makes the best crumpets in the UK?

See I tried those last week, but I'm still on the Warburton's train I think. They were super crispy yet fluffy but nowhere near enough holes for the butter to sink into.

I am a convert to homemade crumpets. They're not particularly difficult to make (a bit time consuming because the yeast needs to develop) and are just so delicious. I recommend this YouTube recipe if you want to try it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ganHDnSz3yw

Warburtons are the only ones I can consistently get the right level of crispiness from. Tried a few different ones and they end up under done or burnt ta fuck.

I have to agree with the general consensus about Warburtons. I don’t think even others come close. All others have this strange plasticky texture and taste I find. I remember thinking some of the higher end supermarkets surely do a better job, like Waitrose etc, but they still pale in comparison.

Somewhere, there will be a little bakery on a small town high street, who's crumpets are their speciality, with a recipe handed down for generations. They won't be advertising, as they have enough trouble keeping up with the local demand already. Good luck with finding it!

Crumpets are one of those things that once you get to the premium supermarket options, ie warburtons, the next step is making your own. I've never found any of the premium versions worth the cost, ie £1.20 for 6 "sourdough" vs 9 normal warburtons for a quid.
