Yep, the SNL skit was a parody of the original UK animated series from 1974. It was brought to the US on Captain Kangaroo around the same time, and then later in the 80s on Nick’s Pinwheel.

I loved Simon and the land of chalk drawings! I've mentioned it a few times over the years and only a couple people remembered it. The rest looked at me like I had two heads.
