Why do I always look better in my own mirror??!!

Seriously. My puffiness don’t puff as much, my dark circles lighten, and my wrinkles spread like waves. My teeth are staind-ish, but I don’t look like I ride the fucking rails with my kerchief. Then I go somewhere, today an eye exam, and they have that lighting. All of a sudden I’m starring in Night of the Living Dead. 😵 I looked ok when I left the house. I don’t know who this old gross bitch is …

Theater Stage Tech here. It's the lighting. Put the mirror in your kitchen with the fluro and check out the difference.
Make up, Clothes, skin tone etc all change depending on the light quality, spectrum, direction etc.

It can’t be always lighting. Some mirrors could make you look wider or thinner witch effects your opinion highly.

This is true, but not many mirrors outside of some novelty/professional circumstances chance your perception of your teeth etc. I understand the psychological optics to which you refer, but I don't think this is the case in this scenario.

No clue, since I look like shit in all mirrors. I did eventually figure out part of it is the reverse effect, though, and that if I flip my selfies on my phone, for example, I look more like myself (which is still not great, but is better than many pics and mirrors).

There's a symmetry effect with mirrors . If we style ourselves to look good in a mirror (hair part), it will look less pleasing to everyone else and photos. If you reverse it, it looks worse in the mirror but looks good to everyone else. Try a non reversing mirror.

Huh. Sorry to hear that.

I had to do some stupid video call today and UGH fuck.

As an optician.
Y'all. Lighting matters.
Mainly, we all think so much worse of ourselves than reality. Truly. Everyday, I have to explain this to someone.
We should all be less harsh and realize, we are aging., that's okay. We are beautiful , with every year that passes. Every gray hair, every wrinkle... I have earned, willingly or not. Their mine and it shows, I am alive and living . Maybe that's okay too.

Whew yes. I kept catching glimpses of myself in mirrors around TJ Maxx today and WOOF.
LegalBridge4107@reddit (OP)
LISTEN … you are GORGEOUS. It’s some weak ass lighting.
al_brownie@reddit
😆😆 let’s not even talk about going to the hair salon
AndreaKristin8@reddit
That’s why I started cutting my own hair. I couldn’t stand the salon mirror and cape lol
VIPreality@reddit
Man, there is something about those capes that does something really awful to faces.

I went to a bar for the first time in a long time on the weekend and a lady called me 'hot"
It was very flattering for me.

My son’s friend at a birthday party: “Are you a mom or a grandmom?” O Jesus
everybodys_lost@reddit
Omg I just discovered the same thing- there is one mirror in my house that makes me look GOOD - like 5-6 years ago good... And then the other mirrors I look ok but not as good as that one..
And then work bathroom?? Wtf??? Do I look like this all day at work? Where's my makeup? Why do I have these bags and shadows? Catch my reflection on the car window or a security camera or god forbid a checkout camera....jesus h christ am I old
jjmawaken@reddit
It's like the two-face from Seinfeld.... gotta just sit places with good lighting.
RogerJohnson2@reddit
I can’t handle any self checkout with a security camera/monitor

Every time I see myself in one of those I think, "yeah, I'd be keeping a close eye on that guy."
