..."truly, truly, truly outrageous..ohhh JEM! The music's contagious- outrageous!!!!"..
Does this take you back or what!? I know I can't be the only girl that had an absolute obsession with Jem!! To a first-grader, she was the epitome of COOLNESS (haven't heard that one in a while!). Anyone else have the indoor Jem tent? Her metallic "rocker" wig? She was everything and even at 43 years old I can hear the music absolutely perfectly.
padlrchik@reddit
Anybody wonder how Jem has aged? Is she still truly outrageous? Can she still wear those heels without hobbling for two days afterward?

NSFW Edit of JEM clips to the song Smell Yo D*ck. You're welcome! It cracks me up every time .https://youtu.be/08PMyE7xpNY?feature=shared

I’m just going to put this here. https://youtu.be/e3C5SeNcVpQ NSFL

I have the whole thing on DVD! The episode where the girl gets addicted to pulls is so heavy handed!
ChaucersDuchess@reddit
I was sooooo into them!! The best part of streaming and the internet is that my autistic daughter also loves Jem!
But my parents’ karma for me tormenting them with Jem is my kid playing the theme song on loops for HOURS. 😂😂😂
GeorginaNada@reddit
I wish there was a new Jem and the Holograms renaissance. Jerrica Benton was everything to me! A business owner, a philanthropist, an artist, wealthy enough to give her best friends everything they need to succeed in their own goals, using high technology to lead two different and successful lives.
1ofZuulsMinions@reddit
I have good news for you! There’s a new doll coming out soon!
GeorginaNada@reddit
One: This is truly outrageous XD
Two: I wonder if the Jerrica outfit suggests that the doll can hide her pink rocker hair under her hat like the original!
WonderMew@reddit
Integrity toys has had a license from Hasbro several times to make these GORGEOUS Jem dolls: https://integritydolls.info/?page_id=850
Also IDW did a Jem reboot a few years ago that did a modernized Jem reboot that was really good: https://trulyoutrageous.fandom.com/wiki/Jem_and_The_Holograms_(IDW)
MutationIsMagic@reddit
Absolutely. This series is awesome!
betty_smash@reddit
I had Jem and Kimber as kid then as a young teen I collected almost all the dolls through eBay/thrifting and still have them!
I also have the Mandela effect type memory of the doll’s hair actually changing color and then one day the earring stopped blinking and her hair never changed completely back.
Mad-Hettie@reddit
The episode where Kimber broke the 4th wall during the intro to let the audience know everything had gone to hell broke my brain as a kid. I was SHOOK. Top 10 moment in TV history.
Both-Tree@reddit
I still have my untouched sticker book and stickers
lirio2u@reddit
First Halloween after the Pandemic, I was truly outrageous.
lavidacontinua@reddit
I had this poster when I was a kid and didn't have anywhere in my room to put it. So I put it on the family fridge
Sand-fleas@reddit
My cousin gave me the Jem doll for my birthday one year. I kept that thing till a few years ago then let it go. I can trace my style straight to these moments in life
pineapples_are_evil@reddit
I have the first few seasons on DVD! Gummi Bears 1-3 and the smurfs too! All birthday gifts after 23 lol
HungryFinding7089@reddit
Gummi bears...bouncing here and there and everywhere...life is (something?) and beyond compare...we are the gummi bears...we are the gummi BEARS!

high adventure that’s beyond compare

Glitter and Gold for the song win. Still in my head- l played the tape a lot!
happy_nekko@reddit
In high school, my bff, her sibling and I would rent Jem vhs to re-watch. The Glitter and Gold tape had some sort of glitch in the audio when Jem sang the song. It sounded like she farted at one moment while Jem was doing a shimmy move. Being teenagers, we re-wound and laughed until it hurt.
We still joke about it to this day.
Whore-a-bullTroll@reddit
I LOVED Jem!! I got the Jem doll for my 5th birthday in 1985- her earrings could flash when you flipped the switch on her back. She had to two outfits, one for Jem and one for Jerrica, and the Jerrica outfit came with the beret so that you could hide the pink part of her hair. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen, lol. Still one of my favorite toys ever, second only to my Snuggle Fabric Softener teddy bear that I still own to this day.
AmBooth9@reddit
Jem is on the Tubi app for free right now!
happy_nekko@reddit
Thank you for the info! I’m not feeling well, and have been re-watching childhood shows during the day - just like when we were kids. Currently watching My Two Dads on Tubi, and will be switching to Jem next!
AmBooth9@reddit
You’re welcome! Tubi has a really great selection of tv shows and movies especially from that genre.
thesweetestchef@reddit
OMG OMG OMG!!!!! JEM!!! I loved Rio and accidentally turned him into an amputee! I still have all my Jem dolls and their hot white and gold car! Radio was my favourite for some reason? I remember getting the gold version of JEM! Sooo cooool !
MutationIsMagic@reddit
It's free on tubi!
CirclingBackElectra@reddit
This is not a flattering picture of Rio, lol
ravenscroft12@reddit
I never got the appeal of Rio. I always thought evil Erik was better looking.
CirclingBackElectra@reddit
Oh my gosh, yes! I’d totally forgotten about Erik, but he absolutely was better looking. The Misfits were just better in general, ha ha
ParsleyMostly@reddit
His doll looked like Balki (which was fine with me as Balki was super cute)
sed2017@reddit
Which one is Rio?
CirclingBackElectra@reddit
The purple-haired dude
CutRateCringe@reddit
He doesn’t deserve better. He’s a cheating idiot, lol. Jem is not his girlfriend.
Tiny-Reading5982@reddit
Jerrica knew and did nothing lol
CutRateCringe@reddit
Haha, just let the man make a fool of himself. But he still had the nerve to play jealous. The audacity!

When I was really was really young, like 6 or 7, there was this competition. You had to call a number and sign the Jem theme song. I have no idea what the prize was, but my older sister practiced it so much that I still remember some of the song. It's one of my earliest memories of my sister. She passed away 4 days ago. Thanks for this. It actually means a lot.
ainjel@reddit
Oh my God I totally did the song call in, too! And imagine that, I went on to be a professional musician.

I always liked The Misfits best, they had the best songs
PapaTua@reddit
Their songs are better. It even says so in the theme song!

Danzig was a good sport by not suing for the trademark rights. Kidding. He likely has no idea they ever “existed”.
ImitationCheesequake@reddit
Too busy feuding with his own band The Misfits lol
Jokierre@reddit
Ha! Absolutely correct.
Squirrel_Master82@reddit
Yeah, but Jem was truly outrageous!
Vox_Mortem@reddit
I was obsessed. I had star earrings and would try to sing the songs. I had the Jem doll too, but none of the others, and she towered over all the barbies. So I made her the amazon queen of the lesbians.
BalkiBartokomous123@reddit
I had that doll! She had bendy legs too! I wish I would have saved her.
beebzforever@reddit
My Ken dolls look fabulous in her pink metallic heels. I still have the shoes somewhere and my mom recently found my jem doll in my grandmas garage. Poor Jem was in pretty bad shape though :(
CompletelyBedWasted@reddit
My mom took away my Ken (with good reason I suppose) but I cut all the hair off the knock off Barbie, put Ken's clothes on her, named her Ben. Fabulous 👌
Grumpy_Dragon_Cat@reddit
OMG I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO DISCOVERED THIS, thank you
Illustrious-Fly9586@reddit
I had Jem, a Hologram and Pizzazz and called them my Amazon barbies!!
PistolGrace@reddit
They were so big compared to Barbie. None of my friends would let me play her. I had to resort to Barbie, so we were all the same size.
MrsPancakesSister@reddit
I wanted a Jem doll so badly and instead got a Barbie and the Rockers Barbie (came with a music cassette, too). It was the only time a Mattel toy felt bobo as all hell. And I’m still in my feelings about it. Hmmmph.
hangryvegan@reddit
In this one, particular situation, Barbie was not it. Anything else, she was first choice, but Jem beat her out in this area.
aworthlesstruenobody@reddit
My favorite cartoon of all time!
Electronic-Host9526@reddit
She was my first cartoon crush, was in kindergarten or 1st grade. Thought we were gonna fly through the city together.
singleguy79@reddit
Didn't watch it because I guess I was of the mindset 'yuck, girls cartoon'
Dazzling-Hornet-7764@reddit
I vacuumed and dusted and did other random chores around the house for 2 weeks to earn enough to buy a Jem doll with the flashing earrings. My mom dragged me to some church council meeting the next week (I used to just hang out and wander around the building while she was there; the 80s!) and she asked if I would let this other girl who also got dragged along by her mom play with Jem since she wasn’t feeling well and was by herself. When the doll was returned to me the batteries were run down and the earrings weren’t flashing anymore…they just stayed on permanently then went off. To this day I am still bitter!
DateCard@reddit
Jem looks like Juno Temple here
ShaneBarnstormer@reddit
Ahhh yes.
Special-Ferret@reddit
Jem and She-ra were my favorite shows for what seems like so long! I still listen to the songs sometimes I love them.
Practical-Trash-4976@reddit
My brother and I were in elementary school when this was out and we would have piano lessons after school given by a friend of my mom’s. She had a daughter my age and a son my brother’s age. We timed the lessons so I could watch Jem with the daughter while my brother got his lesson and then he could watch GI Joe with the brother while I got mine
Tendaena@reddit
I got a Jem doll for Christmas that had light up earrings. I loved that doll.
Significant-Cut2636@reddit
I didn’t care for Jem but I think I remember a crossover episode with The Ghostbusters. There was a banshee involved maybe? Not sure, it’s been…a really long time.
Osurdum@reddit
I will always be a Jem girl. I can only imagine how crazy I drove everyone in the house or car by listening to the tapes that came with the dolls. I'm sure my mom wanted to throw those cassettes out the window, and possibly me too. lol
futurecadavre@reddit
Jem, She-Ra, and Babs Bunny were mangerside at my birth. Formative af.
Due-Set5398@reddit
I don’t feel like I experienced the 80s other than the intro to Jem and Denver the Last Dinosaur and my mom’s Jane Fonda workout tape.
CrowJane13@reddit
I made my husband watch this cartoon a few years ago. He was irrationally angry that Eric Raymond and The Misfits never went to prison.
As a kid, i never questioned it. I also never questioned why Jerrica would keep Rio around if she knew he was also making out with Jem.
BoonScepter@reddit
There's a podcast called The Jem Jam where they theorize that the show is taking place in a post apocalyptic future and it makes things like all the unpunished crime make a lot more sense
Happycat5300@reddit
One of my earliest memories is watching the Jem episode where a girl is fighting with her mom, and then her mom leaves and dies in a plane crash, and the girl regrets not being nice to her mom. TO THIS DAY that episode regularly pops into my head re: my relationship with my mother.
Tiny-Reading5982@reddit
I don't think I've seen this one 😢
Happycat5300@reddit
Just realized it's one of the Hologram's origin story. Had always thought it was a random side character. Rewatching it brought back the dread of when I was little, I think maybe it was the first time I saw something about parents dying on tv, or realized the mortality of mine.
BoonScepter@reddit
Here's an entertaining podcast called The Jem Jam that recounts the plot of the entire series if you or anyone else wants a refresher for some reason https://open.spotify.com/show/4boBtv4oYwV0QCl6o8Dblg
bodhimind@reddit
Even as a little boy I absolutely loved this show, probably more than my sister!
Eledridan@reddit
It had a solid premise and the episodes were fun. I enjoyed it, as a boy. She-Ra was also good. It was meant to be “He-Man for girls”, but the stakes were higher in She-Ra.
CMFC99@reddit
I am also a current-man-former little boy who enjoyed Jem and She-Ra. To this day some of the Jem songs still pop in my head. Of course her theme song, and there was another one with the lyrics "that's not the real me" or something like that.
I grew up in Texas and I remember one of my babysitters saying that Jem was about devil worship and wouldn't let us watch it. She was also the same lady who told us Puff The Magic Dragon was about drugs. I remember thinking that she was a strange and sad woman.
BoonScepter@reddit
Jem at least was meant to be enjoyable to both boys and girls. I personally had so many he man figures that adding she ra only made sense
Much_Zucchini8826@reddit
They supposedly re-releasing her is some form this holiday season. Rumor is m.a.s.k. next year as well

Ooh I hope they do!

Despite being for girls, the show was actually pretty well-written and they spent way more on music than they had to. It was a solid show. I wasn't a serial watcher, but I saw enough of it to keep up with what was going on.
It was initially part of a vignette series called Super Sunday and it usually preceded Inhumanoids, which I dearly loved. Of the various segmented "shows", it was only those two that ended up getting their own full series, if memory serves correctly.
ls2gto@reddit
This was my favorite cartoon. I went back as an adult and rewatched the entire series. I also have a Spotify playlist of all Jem songs and I am not sorry about it lol.
starringdeltaburke@reddit
Like a Dream and Love’s Not Easy just popped into my head! So good!!!
WonderMew@reddit
The music is frigging awesome, so rock on!
Rhianna83@reddit
So many memories. I remember pretending to be sick in the morning so I could watch an episode. Then my gram caught on, and she started taping it so I could watch it when I got home. I also loved my GEM doll. I’ve always had big feet and the doll had big feet, not tiny feet like Barbie.
Tia_Baggs@reddit
My favorite episode was the one where the kid gets addicted to drugs and thinks she can fly and jumps out of the window. Cartoons were a bit different back then.
Grumpy_Dragon_Cat@reddit
..... please tell me I wasn't the only one who found how her clothing fit Ken, right? Especially the shoes.
See, in my dumb kid brain, Jem and Ken were secret agents, and Bug Bunny always fooled Elmer Fudd, so why not Ken?
I never got around to the 'why', though, just the dressup.

I loved Jem. I sang and will still sing along with all the songs. When I found it on Netflix a few years ago, I watched every episode all over again. Jem was the only doll I wanted because she wasn’t tiny and petite like Barbie. My Barbie’s were trashed.

I (my sister) had some Barbie-type Jem dolls and the soundtrack on tape. I might still have the soundtrack around here somewhere.
