NeverMind_ThatShit@reddit
Good, hopefully this convinces other phone makers to put buttons like a dedicated shutter or "camera control button on their phones. Phones needs more buttons, I hate how nearly every phone has been dumbed down to up/down rocker + power button.
logosuwu@reddit
You need to actually buy devices with features you want though, instead of saying that xyz is great and then never buying any phones that has it. /r/Android will say that the Sony Xperia is the best phone on the market every single time a new one comes out cos of headphone jack, SD card, shutter button, no punch hole or notch but then won't go and buy one. They copied Apple because IPhones sell, so unless manufacturers see that features sell they'll continue to remove them.
Sarin10@reddit
Two years of OS updates is insane.
logosuwu@reddit
3 years, in line with most manufacturers
Sarin10@reddit
not sure what the point here is. just because the majority of Android OEMs only commit to 2-3 years of OS updates doesn't make it reasonable.
Samsung is 7/7, Pixel is 7/7, Apple is >5 years.
logosuwu@reddit
Those are the exceptions not the norm, should it be higher? Sure, but you can also just flash another ROM
Sarin10@reddit
and then you lose a bunch of features.
IIRC flashing a custom ROM onto an Xperia results in significantly worse camera quality.
logosuwu@reddit
Hasn't been the case since 2019, and even before it wasn't much worse given how bad their camera processing were lol. What features would you lose?
BlackenedGem@reddit
Half the problem is Sony refuses to fix the basics. I had an Xperia 5 II and loved all the extra features you described. But I didn't like the nonexistent point and shoot, atrocious night mode, the fingerprint sensor failing after 2 years (a common issue across xperias still), lack of OS updates, and in my case a dodgy battery.
I liked the good bits enough to want to buy a similar phone again. But when I was looking to upgrade the Xperia 5 V had a lower resolution screen, no notification LED, and one less camera. That was £800 or so iirc, or I could spend £1300+ and get an Xperia 1 V that fixes half the issues.
Instead I got a pixel 8 pro bundle.
proedross@reddit
Exactly where I'm at, minus the dodgy battery. I'm still using the 5 II as my main phone, and I enjoy the aforementioned features, but those issues made me accept the fact that my next will most certainly not have a a headphone jack, unfortunately.
logosuwu@reddit
The battery is best in class though? You can't blame Sony for Qualcomm shitting the bed.
DashingDugong@reddit
Bought a 1 IV. Fingerprint sensor failed :(
webusermy@reddit
Just FYI, while it's one less camera, the main camera is a huge upgrade, and the "telephoto" crop mode is still comparable to the previous generation's.
BlackenedGem@reddit
Yeah and I think that's emblematic of Sony's issues. They've taken what would have been a great improvement (better main camera and a good telephoto) and because they removed something else it's "well you're not any worse off now". It doesn't encourage enthusiasm for their phones.
HeroYouKey_SawAnon@reddit (OP)
Have you ever been to /r/Android? Every time a new Xperia comes out the same people who demand headphone jacks, SD card, shutter button, and no hole suddenly bemoan other features and unironically state with high upvotes that they will not consider it without price and feature parity with Samsungs. They are the poster child of high demands while proudly never voting with their wallets.
AlexitoPornConsumer@reddit
Same goes with this subreddit.
ezkailez@reddit
also people on a subreddit are probably too small to even count in the phone sale statistics. fact of the matter is that the general public just don't care
erm_what_@reddit
Most phones can use the volume key as a shutter button when the camera is open
ursastara@reddit
If that was a fingerprinter reader I would buy. Been waiting for touchid on the flagships for the past 6 years
nathris@reddit
Even if they wanted to, there's a patent troll in the US that holds the patent for it.
Sony had them on their phones for years, but they were software disabled on the US models.
erm_what_@reddit
Asus ZenFone 10 has it
ThePillsburyPlougher@reddit
The patent for what exactly?
Android phones and tablets have several different types of fingerprint readers.
ursastara@reddit
What that's ridiculous. Ipads have them though??
nathris@reddit
Patent is likely specific to phones. Apple actually owns a patent on integrating it into the power button but Sony was doing this before that patent was granted so I don't think it was them.
_Ev4n_@reddit
FaceID works so well I couldn’t image awkwardly holding it on the side for a thumb scan. Under the screen thumbprint would be dope though.
ursastara@reddit
It's definitely the fastest and most responsive face reading thing but only when your face is visible, it would just be nice to have one for use otherwise
D1sc3pt@reddit
Aaaand glasses on/off is a problem for me
KiefStarmer@reddit
Two ways to improve that, as u/Pugs-r-cool said you can do an Alternative Appearance and scan with glasses on, but if you have an Apple Watch you can also enable Face ID with a mask and then do the "Add Glasses" to add another scan with glasses.
Pugs-r-cool@reddit
try doing an alternative appearance scan in the faceID settings while wearing your glasses.
JJ3qnkpK@reddit
I also dig fingerprint scanners for giving my partner access without her having to remember a 10+ digit code. It's easy enough to set one of the fingers to her's, which isnt quite as possible with face scanners.
Glebun@reddit
You could register an "Alternate appearance"
JJ3qnkpK@reddit
I didn't know that - more points towards the iPhone!
gunfell@reddit
Why not have both.
_Ev4n_@reddit
I said under the screen would be cool. I own an iPad mini, it’s extremely awkward to use the fingerprint scanner at times.
ReasonablePractice83@reddit
Let's not pretend like FaceID is not ever awkward. I had Face ID on iPhone and it sucked in many situations, especially in bed. I have Face ID on my iPad Pro and it's definitely awkward moving my face around otherwise it fails to scan. Face ID is not perfect and is awkward in many situations. Adding touch ID will supplement it.
iindigo@reddit
I rarely have trouble with it on either iPhone or iPad, but I’ll caveat that by saying that I make a point of training the model by entering the passcode every time it fails due to the phone or my face being at an awkward angle. Before I started doing that it failed a lot more.
Not that I’m against bringing back Touch ID, but I don’t find it to be a must.
ReasonablePractice83@reddit
I dont know, Ive had this iPad Pro 11 for what, 5 years, and it still fails all the time because my face is not precisely in front of the camera but at an angle.
moneyman2205@reddit
You don't have to use your thumb
mr_tolkien@reddit
Face id is slow and buggy if you're not uncovered exactly in front of the phone
Classic-Study7112@reddit
I don't understand why people are "waiting" for a feature that there is no indication they will add and very little demand for. Face ID works flawlessly. I understand that you personally prefer a fingerprint reader, I guess, but there's never been the faintest indication of it coming back.
downbad12878@reddit
Vast majority don't give a shit. Face ID is too good. Only weird ass nerds redditors make a big deal out of this
Classic-Study7112@reddit
It's a bummer that this is being downvoted. I was just told that /r/hardware is better for these discussions but I guess not. What you're saying is objectively correct: Face ID is completely seamless and the vast majority of people have no interest in Touch ID anymore. The only time I ever hear about it is from redditors who don't use iPhones.
downbad12878@reddit
Upvotes and downvotes doesn't matter and doesn't show the truth anyway .It's Reddit,it just depends what the current circle jerk is going on
ThePillsburyPlougher@reddit
Have an iPhone. Would like a fingerprint scanner. It’s not that deep…
Classic-Study7112@reddit
So that justifies mass downvoting someone who doesn't agree with your personal opinion and correctly observes that there is no real demand for Touch ID?
ThePillsburyPlougher@reddit
It’s just downvoting first of all. Not a big deal.
Second of all hilarious youre acting like the reason it’s getting downvoted is the observation of a lack of demand for a fingerprint scanner and not the edgy town and insulting “weird ass nerds redditors”. That’s some weird ass need redditor logic right there if anything.
lutel@reddit
It is not big deal but it made me go with Samsung mainly because of this. Now Samsung is better anyway so even fingerprint won't make me switch back.
kyralfie@reddit
Exactly. I tried iphone X when it was just released and Face ID was absolute trash which was of course almost universally praised by the reviewers as well as its camera. Immediately switched to Huawei P20 Pro for its realible and fast front facing fingerprint scanner and a camera that was head and shoulders above in practive.
ursastara@reddit
I agree
Classic-Study7112@reddit
Why?
Classic-Study7112@reddit
platinumgus18@reddit
The sensitivity seems new, I doubt anyone else has done this in android, is that right? Of course shutter buttons themselves are as old as headphone jacks which were removed to save costs but the touch sensitivity to add features is a welcome move. A lot of low and mid budget phone have this fingerprint sensor which is touch sensitive and can do simple things like swipe down notification panels and stuff, not sure if software updates can be used to make these buttons have these extra features
klonmeister@reddit
Does the standard Pro have slimmer bezels as well or is that reserved for the Pro Max?
liquid42@reddit
Slimmer bezels on both pro and pro max.
cuttino_mowgli@reddit
I remember when Xperia phones have a physical shutter buttons. Is that the new feature of iPhone 16?
b_86@reddit
I remember when Nokia S40 phones had a physical shutter button...
ranixon@reddit
Or Lumias, even the Lumia 520
bazhvn@reddit
Nokia was very consistent on that front, shutter button was always standard on their phones.
Elitro@reddit
The camera button was actually I great feature I loved in my Xperia Z2. Happy to see it back.
VastTension6022@reddit
It's interesting that it's real physical button that moves and depresses but relies entirely on the haptic engine to click, I guess just for feedback when sliding?
ThePillsburyPlougher@reddit
Sounds like the Mac touchpad
parkotron@reddit
Yeah, the last generation home buttons weren't physical buttons at all but just pressure senstive with haptic feedback, so I completely expected this "camera control" to be the same.
Presumably, all the "light press" guestures just feelt a lot better with a button that can actually depress.
PrestigiousWheel8657@reddit
So it's a shutter button?
picastchio@reddit
It's a shutter touchpad.
HeroYouKey_SawAnon@reddit (OP)
You know how Apple are with their fancy names...
In fairness the touch slide thing is a functionality above that of most shutter buttons.
Mother-Reputation-20@reddit
Can't wait to them implementing physical keyboard - Keypad Intelligence! /s
btbtbtmakii@reddit
It's a shutter button
yUQHdn7DNWr9@reddit
It’s a shutterless button.
From-UoM@reddit
Is there any reason to the base instead of the pro?
For $200 ($800 to $1000) more you get
-slightly larger screen -120 hz screen -faster CPU -3 focal length with better ultrawide and 5x telephoto -longer battery life -Titanium frame -faster usb 3.0
