Foreign Currencies To Store?
Posted by olympiadinsider@reddit | preppers | View on Reddit | 70 comments
Hello! I live in the greater NYC area and was wondering which currencies to store (not in huge amounts obviously, but a decent bit) before the election (mainly afraid of widespread civil unrest that could get worse).
My first thought was Canadian Dollars considering that’s our nearest land border, but I also thought about Pounds or Euros or even Swiss Francs. Thoughts?
Eredani@reddit
The dollar is still the king of the world. I've never been to another country where it was not recognized and accepted. You would need a complete collapse of America for that to change. And that would cause all kinds of global secondary effects.
If you want something collapse (or hyperinflation) resistant, then it's either precious metals (gold/silver) or cryptocurrency (bitcoin).
If you are fleeing to another country, then just get some of that currency. Or get some euros.
UnableFortune@reddit
? Unless you're at a tourist spot on the Canadian border, stores don't take usd. In the UK shops don't take USD. A lot of places don't take USD. Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, they don't take it. I suppose places like Mexico and India take USD. Which countries are you referring to?
Eredani@reddit
Not every merchant may take USD, but I guarantee you will find someone who will offer an exchange. Savvy people everywhere in the world know what dollars are.
Specifically, dollars are actually in demand in places like Korea and the Philippines as well as anywhere in Central or South America.
Good luck trying to spend Korean won in the United States.
UnableFortune@reddit
Yeah, in a currency exchanges in pretty much every country. The attitude that you don't need local currency is a really bad look on foreigners. You get that right? They might need income badly enough to remain polite but they won't like you and if you're in a really bad situation, you want people to like you.
Eredani@reddit
Where did I say anything about not needing local currency? Of course, when I was in Korea, I carried won and pesos in the Philippines. I'm very well traveled and very familiar with the Ugly American image.
The original topic was about currency, and if you had to pick just one, or if you didn't know where you'd end up, then your best bet is dollars.
BTW, I'm not talking about currency exchanges. I'm talking about ordinary merchants. And they are happy as he'll to see dollars. It's still the global reserve currency... at least for now.
You sure read a lot of weird shit into what I said.
UnableFortune@reddit
You sure made it sound as though just about anywhere on the planet is eager for USD. My life experience doesn't reflect what you were saying. That some poorer countries are eager to take USD is a long way from "everywhere".
They were referring to a situation where USD collapses. If the plan was to get out of the US, USD wouldn't get them very far.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Exactly. I know from experience Mexico and Costa Rica, you can vacation there and only use US dollars. Just know the current exchange rate, because they love to overcharge Americans, especially if your Spanish isn't the best.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
if world war 3 breaks out your gonna want to get of out this country as fast as possible having a mexican bank account isnt a bad idea
pf_burner_acct@reddit
You're going to have to explain how this makes any sense at all.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
use 2 brain cells if you wanna get drafted to go die be my guess i ain’t fighting for this corrupt government
pf_burner_acct@reddit
Ahhh. Ok. You just don't understand what's going on. Say no more.
Want to avoid war? Vot for the person who does not have Dick Cheney's endorsement.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
haha you are truly brainwashed both party’s at captured war mongers i don’t care who you vote do you’re thing but you better be the first person in the recruiters office when it pops off !
pf_burner_acct@reddit
Trump ended ForeverWar. That happened. It is because of him that we were out.
It is because of Biden/Harris that we have two new wars. The science is settled on that. Weak leadership will lead to conflict which is why Kamala's Cheney endorsement should scare the hell out of you. He knows things that you don't, and he's backing Kamala. Are you dumb? Do you not understand why Cheney wants Kamala?
If a guy like Chey endorses something, you take it as a sign to reconsider. You don't say, "gorsh...well...uh...I guess he's a good guy now because he likes my thing. Golly. Neat!"
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
you know what scares the hell out of me brainwashed idiots like you who don’t understand how foreign policy works are we all the sudden forgetting soleimani ? almost starting a hot war iran or how he wants to continue funding israel which if done will 100% lead to our own troop getting involved oh and Trump shredding the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, Trump also came very close to tweeting the country into a nuclear war with North Korea in late 2017 and early 2018. republicans and democrats have always been war mongers weak leadership will start wars and so will ego get your head out of your ass
pf_burner_acct@reddit
You're fascinating.
You can warp anything to fit your narrative. That must require an awesome capability to simply ignore what is readily observable. Can you actually forget things that don't support your desired worldview? Like...can you literally eliminate non-conforming facts from your mind despite them being observable with your own two eyes right in front of you?
It's impressive that you are so easily programmable.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
ok russian bot

pf_burner_acct@reddit
Who is talking about any "wing" media?
This is just a matter of basic observation of what is plain to see. No analysis required, this no spin. It just is.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
trump is a peace candit is a phrase coined by right wing media towards the end of his presidency coming into the election used to garner support you are repeating the same talking points used by propaganda right wing media when all evidence does not support that hence you are brainwashed to even consider how close we came to ww3 during his presidency i hate these argument it seems that you believe i am a left wing supporter when in fact both party’s are corrupt war mongers but you do you :)
pf_burner_acct@reddit
Lol. Don't deflect, you hack. This is about you guys celebrating Cheney's endorsement of Kamala, because she aligns to his values. Thus, you align to his values.
You ghoul.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
haha your just making up arguments in your head hilarious now hilarious brainbroken you might want to prep some money to go see a therapist

Actions, not words amigo.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
what actions ? posting from your moms basement ?
beyersm@reddit
If America collapses no currency will matter. If it’s widespread civil unrest you’re worried about, invest in a good lock on your doors, a good home defense gun, some reliable rounds and enough food to last you until the national guard (if even necessary) rolls in and lets everyone know recess is over
olympiadinsider@reddit (OP)
Did you read? This is New York
beyersm@reddit
I did read. Again, if it’s civil unrest you’re worried about, you at most would need to leave the city and stay in a hotel. Even then, your best bet is to hunker down for a few days till things settle down. Why do you think having a foreign currency would help you if civil unrest happens here? Unless you plan to leave the country for a vacation or move permanently, your best bet is to hunker down.
I think you need to stop watching the fear mongering news if you’re worried about total collapse in the US
Early_Dragonfly4682@reddit
What does the election have to do with anything?
pf_burner_acct@reddit
If I had to guess, they think that if Trump loses then moderate/right people will take over cities despite them never having done that. The left is the only group to have seized cities as part of literal insurrections in recent history.
If Trump wins, they think that it's somehow going to end democracy despite the fact that Trump has already been president and we know for a fact that he's not going to do anything exceptional.
It's a delusion.
Early_Dragonfly4682@reddit
What city did "the left" seize?
pf_burner_acct@reddit
Portland and Seattle. Do you not know that left wing domestic terrorists actually seized parts of Seattle and Portland for quite some time and actually had armed soldiers manning border check points to defend their holdings? It made the news once or twice. Summer of 2020? Something like 25 people (three of them children) were killed by violent left-wing terrorism? Ringing any bells? Something? Anything?
Remember when the armed guards enforcing the border checkpoint to the seized portion of Seattle shot two black kids in a Jeep and immediately heralded it as a, and I quote, "victory against fascism?" They went on to defend their actions by saying that the kids were doing drive-by shootings despite having no evidence of that at all. It was international news.
Those were literal insurrections.
Low-Ad-6253@reddit
don’t try to make a logic argument they have been hard brainwashed by media
guywhoismttoowitty@reddit
What do you intend to do with it? Furthermore, why would an American, in any short-term of unrest, take a euro and not a dollar? Do you have plans to get to a place that takes that currency? Can you actually? It doesn't seem like a good use of your efforts.
olympiadinsider@reddit (OP)
Okay, I probably should elaborate:
If the short term unrest gets worse and escalates into gun violence or armed rebellion then I’d probably consider leaving the country
guywhoismttoowitty@reddit
Let me elaborate then. Lets say you live in Yonkers or even Stanford Connecticut, things have gotten so unbelievably bad that there are armed gangs of some sort roaming the streets. How do you get passed them with your 2000 Canadian dollars into Canada?
Or lets say NJ becomes super militant, secedes and invades NYC, just for a really crazy scenario. How do you go against the flux of people going into the city to fight and the outflow of refugees?
Its just not a worthwhile strategy. its not like you are in Lichtenstein and you keep a store of euros and francs on hand cause both routes are possible.
premar16@reddit
Who is attacking whom?
olympiadinsider@reddit (OP)
No politics
pf_burner_acct@reddit
You live in NYC. Aren't guns heavily regulated? Seems like you're in the clear, right?
And no way would Euros or CAD be stable if the dollar wasn't.
No_Character_5315@reddit
Have liquid assets if civil unrest becomes very real some international banks may refuse to do business with the USA due to sanctions in a extreme case. Also most countries won't let you enter with more than 10k in actual cash without knowing what it is being used for and it is subject to seizure.
tacticalawnchair@reddit
What ever will we do if inanimate objects attack
Big_Ed214@reddit
Wait…your in NYC and will leave the USA if there is gun violence? Dude. Just leave New York City and come enjoy freedom in a free state!
We take USD!
If you must leave, ok then try Belize. They take and use USD as currency and the official language is English. Never buy currency before a crisis. Just use your currency now to buy commodities and barter or resell after the expected crash or your “event”. Gold and silver is great and if you must they can be had in foreign currencies like Canadian Maples or South African Krugerrand’s etc.
LumberingLogician@reddit
yes, this. it is hard enough to leave NYC on a normal weekday. OP ain't going nowhere if there is like an actual unrest situation. or, like, a concert, mild snowstorm or holiday weekend.
If you want to get out, leave before anything happens.
TheCivilEngineer@reddit
If this was the case, why not just have a few gold coins and, in the event you actually flee the country, you can sell it in whatever country you run to to get some local currency.
Ed1nyc@reddit
It also depends what country you want to go to also
IamBob0226@reddit
oh for fucks sake.
FeeeFiiFooFumm@reddit
Get yourself some rubles. Depending on who wins, they could quickly become more valuable. /s?
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit
I am someone with Citizenships and Homes in several Countries.
Unless you have a Country and place to actually go to, that you have the RIGHT to enter, then you have no point in having multiple currencies. Remember, you don't have to be allowed into another country if you're not a Citizen and depending on how bad things get, they may bar all Americans from entering.
With all that said, where would you go?
olympiadinsider@reddit (OP)
This is just false, sorry ….
Canada Uk and EU allow US citizens in EU has quirky visa laws that let U.S. citizens stay indefinitely
Basically you can spend 6 months in France, then 6 in Belgium, rinse and repeat
dnhs47@reddit
That’s now. You presume a collapse, both economic (you don’t want dollars) and societal (you’re leaving).
What other country wants refugees from a collapsed country?
There are plenty of refugees floating around already, and most countries that took them in are facing governmental change as a result. The last thing those countries need are more refugees who will bring their attitudes (and guns) to their country.
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit
Unless they choose to close the Boarders. Which has happened before and could happen again. You can travel freely now but in the future, maybe not so much.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
I'm pretty sure Canada would lock us out like they did during Covid.
olympiadinsider@reddit (OP)
Still have a few days to get acrosss
pf_burner_acct@reddit
Then you're in Canada. They've got their own little police state thing going on right now.
Zaliukas-Gungnir@reddit
If something happens and people lose faith in the governments ability to back their currency, this could be a possibility. I know it was a movie, but in the recent movie Civil War the media vehicle stops for gas. They wanted a half tank of gas and she said she had 300 hundred. He said $300 dollars would get you a sandwich. Then she clarified it was 300 Canadian. So she got the gas. Probably the same reason people buy gold or silver to avoid issues with inflation. Or if the world were to go off the petroleum dollar and the US dollar crashed.
olympiadinsider@reddit (OP)
I watched civil war too!
Zaliukas-Gungnir@reddit
I kind of liked some of the subtle hints in that movie. Like the packs of wild dogs that came up quickly. The different factions at play, the atrocities that came up. As well as the foreign currency.
WartHog-56@reddit
Get double Eagles or silver dollars. I've carried up to 20 silver dollars thru customs in PR China and no one even blicked.
harbourhunter@reddit
Anything you stack won’t be useful until after
Any cash will only be useful for the first couple weeks
It’s better to stockpile goods that you can trade
hello_three23@reddit
Gold, obviously.
Me4nowSEUSA@reddit
I have it on good authority, Iraqi Dinar’s are going to evaluate and day now!!
AlienGold1980@reddit
Think more along the lines of what you can trade or a currency that doesn’t rely on a market which won’t be there at the time of collapse…. Like gold and silver and or Mr noodles (I’m not kidding, in times of need they will go for a premium I bet). Oh and it also might be relative to which kind of situation you are prepping for, myself I try to be ready for anything which could happen one day which would have a heavy impact on my life and those that I love
LastEntertainment684@reddit
As an American I keep Canadian Dollars, Mexican Pesos, British Pounds, and Euros in my travel bag. Covers some initial spending cash in most of the places I generally travel to or would travel to.
With that in mind, Gold is still the international currency. I haven’t been to a country yet where I couldn’t find a jewelry store or pawn shop type place willing to trade gold for the local currency.
2_3_5@reddit
None. The dollar will continue to be the best turd if the pile of turd fiat currencies.
Ryan_e3p@reddit
How, pray tell with Swiss Francs help you during civil unrest because of an election?
Ed1nyc@reddit
Hey I'm a NYC based prepper also honestly I stack silver I usually buy sunshine mint or valcambi or apmex rounds or bars but if I'm buying govt backed coins it goes in this order US silver eagles South African Krugerrands (silver) Canadian Maple leafs I put the Rand as second cause it's a brics country
Traditional-Leader54@reddit
Any US minted silver or gold coons.
