Why do people think giving teachers firearms will stop school shootings?

It’s not a dumb question.
As many have said no one wants to “issue” guns to teachers. They want the ones who already chose to carry to carry at work. I know two teachers who are both competition shooters. The one you’d NEVER expect. 5’ Spanish teacher and SHE is nationally ranked (or was). She and her husband (the other teacher) both carry 24/7 when not at work. A shooter entering her classroom wouldn’t kill ONE person before she ended the threat I believe.
If I’m being honest I’d be happy letting teachers carry less lethal weapons like pepper spray or tasers in the classroom (with proper training of corse).
The other thing never mentioned and idk why…most schools have wire gates that come down to separate hallways or whatever AND they have drop ceilings. If you ran all of the controls to a central location you could AT LEAST isolate the shooter to one area with no escape. Replacing glass doors with solid ones might help too so there’s no visuals on who’s in a classroom and who’s not. Plus glass is ALWAYS the easiest to breach with or without bullets (unless they want to invest in bulletproof glass and no one wants to do that).
What we can all agree on is doing nothing is the worst option. One side says take the guns, another says how about you just let good guys have guns too. I think there’s things that can be done in the mean time that don’t require large legislation….just a quick decision.

Because no weak ass, waste of life school shooter wants to deal with the threat of being shot at....a bit ironic..

They’ve all been pussies. Every single school shooter has been bullied for what Gen-X would have made so brutal they would have stopped it immediately. I also think a lot of this is because of zero tolerance violence policies in schools and homes. Years ago you’d punch a kid in the face, settle your beef, sit a couple days kicked out, shake hands and call it a day. Now you’re arrested or kicked out for the year or indefinitely. Now they harbor harbor harbor until they break.
santanzchild@reddit
I doubt it would prevent them but it sure as hell would end them quicker.

As a MASS shooter event? It might end more than you think. Could someone even with a rifle injure 4+ people before a (properly trained) teacher can draw and end the threat? Mass shooters are the only ones getting reported.
Captain-Cannoli@reddit
I forget the shooting, but it was the one where the shooters manifesto was swept under the rug afterwards, in said manifesto the shooter outright said that they were specifically targeting a school because it was a gun free zone and there would be nobody to shoot back
HSR47@reddit
The proposal isn’t “issue teachers firearms”.
Instead, the proposal is that we should remove the statues that impose a blanket prohibition on carry in schools—at a bare minimum there should be a pathway for responsible adults to get certified to carry in schools (preferably they should just go back to being like any other public area).

We think allowing teachers to bring guns in school will stop school shootings in several ways:
1) in the middle of a school shooting, shooting the shooter stops the shooting. even shooting at the shooter can stop the shooting.
2) School shooters want a body count because they want fame to get their message out whatever it may be. if they cant get above 1 or 2 nobody will care. so they fail at their objective.
3) School shooters are to some extent a social contagion. This is why arson isn't covered in the news. If most shool shootings are cut short by teachers, there will be less news coverage (there are several mass shootings that maybe have a 3 day news cycle when actively stopped by someone who was there to begin with) both because of the unfavorable narrative and the reduced body count. less bleeding less leading

"giving teachers firearms" is poor phrasing. It's more accurate to say "allow the teachers that feel they are competent and capable of carrying a firearm, for protecting themselves and the children in their ward."
But like others have mentioned, a gun is usually what stops a school shooter. Waiting 12 minutes for the cops to show up to use one is time wasted and lives lost.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.
darkdoppelganger@reddit
No one wants to "give teachers firearms".
'Arm the teachers' legislation isn't about issuing every teacher a gun like the media and the anti crowd would have you believe, it's meant to allow teachers who already legally carry a concealed weapon in their daily life to continue to do so when they are at work.

My high school math teacher CCW'd for years when he was not at school, and was a CCW instructor during the summer.

The Nashville shooter changed her target location because the original school had "too much security", so not only could trained security (any trained school faculty) be an immediate action force but a target deterrence as well. It's common mass shooters target "gun free" zones, its one of the reasons the 2A community says, "Don't be a soft target" and to "harden our schools".
TigerSharkSLDF@reddit
That's the kind of question that causes forehead damage.
SnoozingBasset@reddit
Didn’t Colin Noir just have a short about how the last school shooter was stopped by a good guy with a gun?
Of course, not reported in most news
Batttler@reddit
the kid in Georgia stopped at the first gun he encountered
10gaugetantrum@reddit
Well when only gun in the school is in the hands of the murderer you can see the result. How many mass shootings talk place in a police station?
Dangerous_Weird1930@reddit
They do occur there, it’s a popular place for “suicide by cop”. Usually a different type of mentality I guess
10gaugetantrum@reddit
Could you please provide sources to mass shooting at police stations? I want to compare that to how many the media claims are in schools and see which one has less.
AnnieGS@reddit
Both questions are ones that REALLY shouldn't have to be asked, but, I'ma ask my own in response. Who do you think will be more "successful" in carrying out their terror plot?
One terrorist vs 1000 unarmed people
One terrorist vs 80+ people with guns.
The answer to both questions should be pretty fucking obvious.
joelfarris@reddit
No Stupid Questions.
"Why do people think giving teachers firearms will stop school shootings?"
That's a stupid question. Didn't anyone read The Rule?
In order to increase doubt of one's own survival, to the level of paranoia such that you fear your imminent demise, you must only accomplish one thing. Do not prevent other rational human beings from being able to instantly end your life should you begin to misbehave.
