my bf plugged in a hard drive now his pc wont boot.. any one know why
Naturalhighz@reddit
as people wrote. Could be a faulty drive, unplug it. Also could be boot order, again. unplug it.
Suspicious-Web-631@reddit
If he plugged a hard drive in and it won't boot, the boot order in BIOS is most likely incorrect now, since the sata cable he connected it to might be in the primary master slot on the motherboard.
Have him check the BIOS settings for which drive to boot to first. Not saying this will fix it, but it might. Also if it's still plugged in and he can't get the PC to start no matter what, just unplug it.
Maverick_Wolfe@reddit
maybe 20+ years ago.... Bios boot order hasn't been much of a problem since about 2009 even then rare. OP said the PC won't boot... Does it power on and just not go beyond the bios screen? Adding a drive shouldn't prevent the boot order from going south. Only way I could think this would happen os if it were a prebuilt or if the motherboard is an Asus or Gigabyte board.
Kent_Knifen@reddit
OP, this above is probably your answer.
If that doesn't fix it though, disable fast boot in your BIOS. I had a similar issue a while back and that's what fixed it for me.
theh0tt0pic@reddit
unplug it
RayOronoz@reddit
with the details they mention, this is the deserved answer fr

I don't even understand why this thread is getting upvoted so much..
Matasa89@reddit
Indeed. No pictures, no description, no drive model or even brand, no idea if it is a USB HDD or 3.5 inch SATA. Hell, for all we know, it could be a NVMe drive, since so many people call all drives hard drives.
Warcraft_Fan@reddit
Probably forced the 20 pin MFM cable in backward.
Several-Turnip-3199@reddit
Nah its a Flipper Zero with the USB Killswitch and an enclosure to look like a HDD.
nas2k21@reddit
Fr, like I'm sure it's just his boot order, but for all I know it's just as likely this hdd has " destroyyourpc.exe" on it
semidegenerate@reddit
If it's not booting into Windows, it's probably destroyyourpc.efi
KLEBESTIFT_@reddit
Unplugged the PC, now what?
silverlightBeing@reddit
Water it so it can grow a new BIOS
theh0tt0pic@reddit
Unplug the harddrive... not the pc
theh0tt0pic@reddit
Try and power it back on?
dankmemelawrd@reddit
Maybe take out the hdd and test it out? So many questions with so less details. Was the pc on when the hdd was plugged in? Any power source damage?

Making these kinda comments with that username is hilarious tbh.

Make sure both ends are secured, sometimes it fucks with the system if its ajar
speczor@reddit
A malfunction hdd/ssd could fuck the boot EVEN if it's not the boot disk. One of sata ssds died and I could not get past MB logo, when I unplugged it I could complete the boot.
illtakeontheworld@reddit
how would you know if your hdd is malfunctioning?
OakleyNoble@reddit
Thought I was in a different subreddit when reading the title.. đŸ˜³đŸ‘€

Had a friend who ran into this issue. Ended up him accidentally pulling the cases power button cable from the motherboard.
codyl0611@reddit
The computer automatically changed the plugged hard drive into the computers boot drive, and unless you happened to have an operating system like windows on that drive, it was bound to fail. Turn the PC on, press the BIOs button, find the setting to change the boot drive, change it to the hard drive that is actually in the computer, save, turn off, turn on.
TheLonelyAsian1@reddit
Be more specific . A random hard drive?
North_Passage@reddit
Check the boot order in BIOS if the HDD is the prio. Just simply switch the boot priority to your old disk then it'll be okay

Then she'll be unplugged. Can't let THAT happen.
zoredache@reddit
Go into the system setup (sometimes know as the bios, cmos, setup). Is the original drives still detected? Do you see multiple devices in the boot order setting? Make sure the original drive is first?
Or
When the computer boots can you press a button to select which drive to boot from? The button will often flash on the screen. Sometimes it will be a key like F11, F12, or something else. If you can try doing that and see what is listed. Try booting some of the other things listed.
unexpectedemptiness@reddit
Boot him insteadÂ
TicTac_No@reddit
Older hard drives required setting jumpers on both drives, and motherboard.
If the jumpers are not set correctly, and the bios is not set correctly, the pc will not boot.
Temporary_Slide_3477@reddit
Unplug it, if the boot order has USB first it will just hang there forever usually.
Had a friend with the same issue, drove 30 minutes to unplug a flash drive.

Send it to me, I'll fix it right up.
jcoffin1981@reddit
Boot order most likely. It's also possible that the comp does not like that device for whatever reason and I've seen this happen with various thumb drives too, just remove it.
awuerth@reddit
Throw it out the window

Yes
Bucknerds@reddit
Have you tried turning it off and back on?
RandomDude04091865@reddit
I've done this sort of thing before. Inevitably what it is is that my tower is cramped and I accidentally bumped something just enough to be loose but not obvious. If I were to give advice, I'd suggest he look at the major connections and make sure he didn't accidentally knock a plug just slightly loose or something in that vein.
MysticStrider@reddit
Be more specific.
JaMStraberry@reddit
Okay so its an HDD, it wont boot? probably the HDD is dead. have you tried taking out the hdd and boot it up again??
Competitive_Ticket17@reddit
Boot into bios and look at the boot order. Make sure the drive with the OS is at the start of the list
Methillo@reddit
A couple of weeks ago my HDDs changed booting order for no reason after a BSOD i had to change the Boot order in BIOS. MAYBE that's the issue, hard to soy with so Little details
FrostByte_62@reddit
Plugged in how? On the motherboard? Sata or M.2? Or USB?
Has he tried unplugging it and starting the PC?
