My kids started Preschool this year and it finally happened; SHOLASTIC BOOK FLIER!!
It's a bit early for cool animal books and car posters, but still cool. My parents didn't always have a lot of extra spending money(not that we do either) but I HAVE to get something, right...right?! š
Correction: there are totally some animal books!
Cold-Nefariousness25@reddit
They have something called share the fair now where you can send money for kids that might not be able to buy books.
Some things get better with time.
iknowiknowwhereiam@reddit
The first time is nostalgia, when they start sending them every other month it loses its charm.
elphaba00@reddit
I got to the point where I would see them in my kidsā take-home folders and just put them in the recycling bin.
iknowiknowwhereiam@reddit
I resent them. Money is tight and I worry my kid will be left out while other kids get their fancy new books
enek101@reddit
Maaan. Savers.. buy books at Savers. Easily the BEST place. and new books suck need the musty old broken in well read ones. they have the bestest stories!
headlesschooken@reddit
I'm surprised nobody mentions the abundance of preloved books in thrift stores. Ridiculously cheap and most are brand-new but never read. When your kid gets bored or out grows the books, donate and grab a pile of new preloved books.
alwaysfuntime69@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I was starting to think about that too...
Gregorwhat@reddit
The selection really isnāt that good either.
Prices arenāt as discounted as they used to be and thereās a lot more junk (Pokemon etc). Their buyers have shifted to more big brand names for sales.
Really disappointed with the selection this year
thebarnacleez@reddit
And wait until the kids only want the non-book stuff like a rock collection from the flyerā¦
TheCatalyst5@reddit
The latest one has slime-making kits...with glitter. š¤¦āāļø I caved on the books with plushie toys and necklace sets. This is where I draw the line. Yes, the nostalgia died quickly.
Powerful_Wombat@reddit
Haha! Absolutely. Was so excited when this first came home in our kindergartnerās backpack. We ended up buying like $100 worth of books. Then suddenly he had another one in his backpack a few months later and we were like WTF??!
Now he gets to choose one book and thatās it
spinereader81@reddit
I never knew any kids that ordered from this. They all waited until the book fair, if they could afford it. But everyone enjoyed window shopping.

I was elated to go to my kidās first book fair until I spent $20 on a diary with a lock for him and he literally never touched it again. However I did buy myself a bitchin unicorn bookmark.

My kids book fair was cancelled this year for being too woke. Sigh
weezeloner@reddit
No way. Are you joking?! I hope you are.
HermioneMarch@reddit
Not joking. My state wants to be the new Florida
Wasting-tim3@reddit
OP, have you been getting Highlights books for the kids yet? Theyāre still around too. My kids love them (or did when they were age appropriate.
alwaysfuntime69@reddit (OP)
Last time I checked my kids were still to young....although now that I think about it, I think time has moved since my oldest was 2 and I should double check the website. š
BrattyTwilis@reddit
Last year, we got my kid a set of "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" books from the book club thing. Gave me flashbacks to when I was a kid
Rude_Negotiation_160@reddit
Oh my God,seeing these again is so cool and a blast from the past! Then I saw the QR code and whispered "I feel so old...."
Mr-Blackheart@reddit
We got the book fair once a year as a kid. Didnāt realize this was a thingā¦
pineapples_are_evil@reddit
I think my nieces access them online. Not nearly as fun. Can't treat them like the Sears Catelogue, circling all that catches their fancy.
I'll have to get my sister to send me the links to their scholastic orders...
But did you know if you're a teacher in a school, an early childhood Educator, home child care, or homeschooling you can sign yourself up for orders. I tried to, but I was off during covid and technically didn't have an employer , or home school/childcare credentials to get my own account at the time. Homeschooling would have something from state/province or school board you are reviewed by, and for a home childcare, I needed to be liscenced, incorporated or have weekly or monthly fees statements from your families.. something to show legit business.
yukonman27@reddit
I bought some gabby's dollhouse book yesterday. Ha
weezeloner@reddit
Oh is that in there? Then we're probably getting that one for my daughter. She LOVES Gabby's Dollhouse. She has the dollhouse with the rooms that are sold separately. She also got a boat for Gabby. She's got everything. That's what happens when you have 2 grandmas that love to spoil their grandkids.
Lost-Wanderer-405@reddit
I like that itās online now. Makes ordering easy.
Cheat_Sour@reddit
My kids started preschool as well this year. They set up the book fair at times whenever the parents could go. Not sure if they had any time that was just solo for the older kiddos. Unfortunately, I did not see the giant piles of scented erasers, the pencils with the leads that you pulled out when it got worn down and put in the back, nor anything Lisa Frank. Wasn't really expecting the last one. An interesting combo of nostalgic and surreal.
CommandAlternative10@reddit
The book fairs seem to have everything but books these days. Was exited to take my kids but it was underwhelming.
clutzycook@reddit
My kids schools don't do the book orders, thank goodness, but they do have the book fairs a couple of times a year. In honor of the little girl I used to be whose parents seldom sent any money with her to use at her own book fairs, I always make sure they have some to spend.
cloudydays2021@reddit
Is it on the same type of paper? I know thatās a weird question
Late-External3249@reddit
Yeah, i remember it was cheap, flimsy paper with a distinct smell. Like newsprint but cheaper
clutzycook@reddit
I always compared it to slightly thicker tissue paper.
The_Spectacle@reddit
it's a great question! I love that paper. crinkle crinkle

YES THE ARE!

If you do wind up getting The Rainbow Fish, make sure you download the proper ending.

Pete the Cat is the GOAT
surfingbiscuits@reddit
Pete the Cat is a brand. Some of the original books by James Dean are good. Scholastic keeps turning the crank and churning out crap with the character in it, and the stories and the art have taken a dive. They're of the "straight to VHS animated Disney sequel" quality at best and a lot of them say "created by James Dean" now.
Pete the Statue. WTH.
Luna_Soma@reddit
Oh that bums me out :( Pete was great when my kid was little

My kid started 1st grade so weāre seeing these now. They actually paired breakfast with the grandparents and the book fare at the same time. Pretty genius.
Happycat5300@reddit
Events like that are nice but also make me so sad for the kids who don't have grandparents alive or close by, like daddy-daughter dances.
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
Yeah I was just thinking that. Fortunately breakfast is optional so no kid is forced to go watch other kids and their grandparents have a good time.
fatbuddha79@reddit
Oh buddy I was with you with my now 10 year old, my other child started kindergarten this year and brought one home... I haven't even looked at it yet. I think in the past 5 years I have seen 10,000 of these. It's not as special as when we were kids. But I get it, my 10 year old got A LOT of books through scholastic, my 5 year old well they won't get as... OH HEY BLUEY I'm in!
(I tell myself they help the class by me ordering)
mtb0022@reddit
It always felt so amazing when the teacher handed me my Scholastic order in class. Now, eh, I donāt think my kids ever cared about ordering these. And like you said, seems like thereās a new order form every month, and you can order online. Scholastic set up a display at conference time, and my kids liked to stop there though.
alwaysfuntime69@reddit (OP)
Every month??? We can't do that. Was it really that often back then? Now I understand my parents apprehension toward ordering from these much....
frizbeeguy1980@reddit
Pete the Cat AND Bluey? Man we never had it so good!
liamicity@reddit
Just placed an order for my son! Much better use of money than Amazon.
WarpGremlin@reddit
I remember begging for SimCity for Windows in 1st grade and getting it via Scholastic Book Order. My parents had to upgrade our 386 to Windows 3.1 so I could play it-- with out sound cuz no sound card.
And now I'm mad at Cities Skylines 2... and need more ibuprofen for my back.
momofwon@reddit
Just a heads up that they sell slime now. So unnecessary.
Old_Hector@reddit
Yeah, I was a poor. I don't remember ever getting anything from one of those magazines. I think I got a couple things at the in person book fair thing, but nothing from those scholastic flyer things.
