Not that they’re wearing foundation in the photo, but that shit was notorious for containing a fuckton of titanium dioxide. Cameras turned everyone wearing that stuff into ghosts back then.
Brains of the operation is back left. The immortal Vince Clarke. Vince was also the brains behind Yazoo and went on to crush hit after hit after hit with Andy Bell in Erasure.
Didn't actually start listening to them until later in life, but now I have several of their songs on my various playlists. I was always aware of them, of course, but I was just in a different scene when I was younger.
Same. They were popular amongst the new wave or preppie kids. I wasn't one of them. Back then, I used to think I couldn't listen to certain genres of music because of social cliques. Stupid.
Man, 15 year old (and 16 year old) me had such a crush on Dave Gahan.
I slept out for tickets to their show when I was 16 and got front row center seats, which allowed me to stand right in front of the stage and make googly eyes at him the whole show.
The first time he made eye contact with me, he smiled. It's a miracle I survived to tell you this story because I about died on the spot!

1982, the post-Vince Clarke era, who by this time had formed Yazoo with Alison Moyet and released Upstairs at Eric’s.

I always went more towards punk, but Upstairs at Eric's is a soundtrack of that period for me.

1982, the pre-Dave Gahan era, when Casper the ghost was fronting the band. Seriously, didn’t they have sun in England in the early 80s?

Not much.

They are forever in my mind as “Deppish Moday”. I was awful dumb as a kid. I won’t tell you how I pronounced INXS…

"Inks"? Like ink but plural? That's how we pronounced it. :)

So I actually just learned today there is a Macarena like dance to Personal Jesus? How did I miss that?

That Depeche Mode throwback really takes you back to the days when synthesizers ruled the world.

Man, they were young when the first started.
