How do car aircon pressure switches work?

I understand a lot of cars will be different. Generally speaking, is it common to see a high pressure and a low pressure switch on a vehicle, or is it normally one or the other?
Am I correct in assuming the high pressure switch is on the high pressure side and the low pressure switch on the low pressure side? Any other info is appreciated.
Thanks!

Modern vehicles usually have both. Some will have actual sensors instead of just pressure switches. Some have a transducer which is sort of a combination switch.
