Is it worth it to give it a DIY try?

So my friend's car is very old and we are trying to bring it back to life, should we try to fix this paint ourselves or should we send it straight to the mechanic?

Honestly, I'm likely to try this sometime in the next year. The color coat is still pretty good on my car, but the clear is garbage like this. If you do give it a try, definitely follow the advice about taking the time for tons of prep work. Only way to make it look decent. And document the process for poor schlubs like me. ๐

If you think that a mechanic is going to fix the paint. Then you for sure should take it to the mechanic.

Why not,itโs not worth paying someone to do it

A good paint job by a professional will total the car.
A few hours watching painting tutorials and $300 in supplies will get you a 10ft paint job that will last a few years.
Taking prep advice very seriously, and spending the extra hours cleaning, tacking, and providing a dust free environment will make everything so much better.
Also, practice a few times with the clear coat. It's hard to judge how much you spray.

If you're looking to flip the car, please don't make your learning experience someone else's problem.
That being said, you can learn a lot from doing work like this. Even if all you can get ahold of is a harbor freight spray gun and an underpowered compressor.

You can learn something and it's fun to step back and look at what you've done.

Buff and polish will make it look slightly better temporarily.

I wouldn't put significant time or money into this? But to each their own. What are the goals of this project?

Worth a shot I'd say. If you mess it up you can still get it redone later.
