Anyone remember when you could actually call a tech company and talk to someone?

I remember calling Microsoft, PayPal and Ebay customer service in the 90s and talking a real person that solved my issues. I remember talking to a Verant customer service employee about an issue in EverQuest. I remember calling Sierra for issues with a disc in the 80s and actually talking to a real person. Even in more modern times i remember calling Blizzard and talking to a real person about a World of Warcraft account in 2006.
Tech made customer service people's jobs more efficient therefore you would think that we should have better customer service, yet what we have now is an impossible situation where no tech company cares about retail customers and there is no longer an ability to talk to a real human being that can solve your issues.

I talked to Microsoft today and got help with my MSDN account.

Yes, and sadly we are to blme for this.
We pick wht we use mostly by price and to keep prices low as the other guys with no customer service, they cut the # of people that handle the customer service and or phone lines. If we supported the companies that had good customer support/service and not run to the other vendors with a lower price, we'd still have people manning the phones. we caused this. no one else. we the cheap customers.

Although, it is computer and software technology; wasn't it pretty much inevitable that the tech they were working on would someday replace humans, especially in that sector?
On a side note, I've actually never even called tech support. I've always put together my own systems and installed all my own software and troubleshot everything myself. Benefit of being both introverted and rabidly independent I guess.....
