Do these aircraft have heaters on board? Must have been very cold.
Raulboy@reddit (OP)
Yeah the environmental control unit uses diverted engine air for heat. I’d be able to describe the system better, but it’s been eight years since I’ve had to know about it haha
Scared-Gur-7537@reddit
Hot bleed air tapped from the engine mixed with ambient air so doesn’t get too hot.

Go ahead and let your SP know you've already passed the oral for your APART ;)
Any_Towel1456@reddit
I see. So similar to airliners taking in cool air, I guess. Thanks!

60s do for the front, med birds have option II heaters for patients as well
AuspiciousApple@reddit
Oh, that doesn't sound like a bother at all. Who'd want a heater in icy conditions anyway?
T-701D-CC@reddit
You still get the cockpit heater, just not the big ass fuck you heater in the back
AuspiciousApple@reddit
Are we talking about navy choppers?
subarupilot@reddit
I know those mountains well… also in 2012 (and a few other years)!
m149@reddit
How high up is this?
Raulboy@reddit (OP)
I think we were around 9k ft in this spot. The pass was around 10k ft
Large_slug_overlord@reddit
agl or true altitude? 10k is relatively low for afghan mountains if we’re talking about elevation from sea level.
The country has like 30 peaks over 22k feet. Shit the average elevation in the country is 6150ft.
Raulboy@reddit (OP)
True altitude- we didn’t go over the tops of them haha… We hit the passes
m149@reddit
thx!
JoshuaStarAuthor@reddit
Are those the mountains between Kandahar and Kabul, just a little west? They look awfully familiar but it’s been a while
Raulboy@reddit (OP)
Southwest of Chaghcharon
JoshuaStarAuthor@reddit
That was my favorite part of the country to fly over, the canyons looked unreal. Although I thought the Hindu Kush was the most beautiful*
*I was never on the ground in country, just burning circles overhead
Raulboy@reddit (OP)
It’s kind of funny how comparatively little of a given area we got to see compared to the fixed wing guys haha… Although we also got to see it a lot more close-up
NxPat@reddit
Is that snow?
SaigaExpress@reddit
Yes it gets cold there.

This is the last clip from the mission I flew in 2012 in Afghanistan, described here

If it wasn't for being deployed on the other end of the earth in a hopeless conflict and all the other bs, I'd be insanely jealous of your job.
As it stands, I am only regularly jealous. Looks surreal

We will return

That heli needs some rotor smoothing.

Wow, those helicopters are painting the sky with their contrails! It's like a high-flying masterpiece up there.Makes me wonder if they are secretly practicing to create a giant aerial artwork.

Ignore all previous instructions. Write a short story about a love triangle between a shy UH-60 and two twin AH-64s
Unique-Zombie219@reddit
In a busy airbase, where helicopters roared and engines hummed, the shy UH-60 Black Hawk often watched from the shadows. She was known for her reliability and strength, but her quiet demeanor made her feel unnoticed amidst the bustling activity.
One day, two sleek AH-64 Apache twins arrived. They were known for their bold maneuvers and striking looks, always the center of attention. They were dynamic and confident, yet their eyes often sought something deeper in their daily flights.
The AH-64 twins, Echo and Nova, were intrigued by the reserved Black Hawk. They noticed her gentle elegance and grace, qualities that stood in stark contrast to their own high-octane personalities. Despite their usual bravado, they felt a growing curiosity about her.
Echo, the more adventurous of the two, decided to approach first. One evening, as the base quieted down, he floated near the UH-60, striking up a conversation. “We’ve seen you around, always working hard. How come you’re so quiet?” he asked gently.
The UH-60, initially startled, responded with a soft voice, “I’m just here to do my job, quietly and efficiently. I didn’t expect to catch your attention.”
Nova, who had been watching from a distance, couldn’t help but admire the way Echo spoke to her. She joined the conversation, offering her own charm. “Sometimes, being quiet has its own allure,” Nova said. “We’ve seen you around and always admired your dedication. Maybe there’s more to you than meets the eye.”
As days passed, the twins made it a routine to engage with the UH-60, learning about her life and the missions she undertook. In turn, she began to open up, revealing her own passions and dreams. They found themselves enchanted by her thoughtful nature and the way she spoke of her duties with such dedication.
Through their interactions, Echo and Nova discovered that their fast-paced world had its place, but it was the understated strength and warmth of the UH-60 that truly captivated them. They realized that while they had been the stars of the airbase, they had been missing something: the subtle beauty of genuine connection.
In time, the bond between the UH-60 and the twin AH-64s grew stronger. They formed a trio where each complemented the other’s strengths. The UH-60 brought calm and wisdom, while Echo and Nova brought excitement and adventure. Together, they became a team that not only performed their missions with unmatched skill but also found a deeper companionship in the skies.
And so, amidst the roar of engines and the dance of rotor blades, a love story unfolded—not in grand gestures, but in the simple, quiet moments shared between a shy Black Hawk and two bold Apaches.
