Help Identify Aircraft
Posted by Prestigious_City_988@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 97 comments
So the year is 1998, and obviously the cabin is United Airlines, but it's anyone able to figure out the aircraft?
CompleteTop4258@reddit
ok, next question. Where are they exactly?
PrudenTradition@reddit
It is United Airlines Boeing 757-222.

I appreciate you.

Is that what you appreciates about them?
PrudenTradition@reddit
Thank you.
lonely_pigeon_1993@reddit
I can never comprehend how people do this. Are you a Rainbolt by any chance?
n1ck-t0@reddit
But can you tell what row they are in?
PrudenTradition@reddit
Row E probably seat E26 or E27
Winter-District-5500@reddit
No way man that’s crazy. You are so talented if this is true.
Winter-District-5500@reddit
This community is so talented. I would never be able to know what plane it is from the inside of the plane.

757th upvote, lets goooo

Wtf, who are you man! Maximum respect!
ElectroAtleticoJr@reddit
👆this guy 727s!
747ER@reddit
757s?
ilikewaffles3@reddit
Tell me your into plane spotting without telling me your into plane spotting.
PacSan300@reddit
Man, looking at this United seat design is such a throwback. I always knew to expect this design when flying on a United flight in the 90s and 2000s. It was so predictable and consistent.
BaboTron@reddit
Just curious: how did you know this?
PrudenTradition@reddit
my reply to other redditor
Ok-Breakfast-8056@reddit
This is why I installed reddit
jithization@reddit
yeah 757 because the windows are more square. 767 and 777 are more curvy but great analysis! Now time to comb in on that registration :D
morane-saulnier@reddit
It started with a ‘N’ and ended with ‘UA’

Logical-Vacation@reddit
Am I missing something in your post? I agree it's a 757 but most of the photos you linked to are B772s.
PrudenTradition@reddit
i have updated the links xD
PrudenTradition@reddit
there aren't many 757 cabin photos available , i just linked those as a reference to the style of united in the late 90s to the early 20s .
you can check the the available photos here :

I do this shit for a living and I wouldn’t have figured that out in a hundred years. Some of y’all are freaky
FearlessRole8124@reddit
Dang
RandoDude124@reddit
How???
PrudenTradition@reddit
Please elaborate .
RandoDude124@reddit
How’d you find the plane out?
PrudenTradition@reddit
short answer : osint tools (i come from security background so crawling data from the internet with few given pointers is somewhat easy for me ) with the most used tool is reverse image lookup plus the date and airline name narrows the search scope significanlty so you just have to connect the dots .

Oh that’s an airplane
dchap1@reddit
Look at that leg room. Oh my heavens!
good_gamer2357@reddit
Got to love how the United seats of the era make it look like you were riding a bus.
TysonPeaksTech@reddit
It’s a plane of a type of plane
DataGOGO@reddit
I am going to guess 767 or L10-11 based on the seating arrangement.
FelisCantabrigiensis@reddit
767s nearly all have and had a 2-3-2 seating in economy. You can see that's 3 seats by the fuselage wall, as you can see 3 tray tables.
DataGOGO@reddit
Pretty sure those are not 1990's economy class seats... They look more like the old business class to me.
747ER@reddit
If it was Business Class, then the wing would not be visible in the window.
DataGOGO@reddit
Yeah good point.
FelisCantabrigiensis@reddit
Do you know of an aircraft and operator who had 3 adjacent seats on their business class service, even some time ago?
CardLeft@reddit
Should be a narrow body considering the wall curvature… 727 or 737, unless I’m missing some outboard engines
Karottank@reddit
Sure? The seems to be quite high For a narrow Body...
avi8tor@reddit
I would guess United DC-10
747ER@reddit
The visible flap actuator fairings rule out the DC-10, which had a famously clean trailing edge with the flap actuators mounted underneath the wing.
Any_Towel1456@reddit
I thought perhaps a de Havilland Comet, because of the square windows.
cyberentomology@reddit
Those windows aren’t square.
747ER@reddit
Neither were the Comet’s 🤷🏻♂️
bozakman@reddit
My first thought was United’s old DC-10 fleet. I’ve sat in these seats. Ref: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/55/c3/bb/55c3bb077fcc37e635f9990d5b814190.jpg
FelisCantabrigiensis@reddit
The seats are marked "E" and "F" and there are 3 seats by the fuselage so it's a narrow-body of some sort with a 3-3 seating arrangement.
Based on the angle of the wing sweep visible out of the window and the shape of the flap track fairing, I'm going to guess a 757.
Based on the presence of the Airfone handset and the plush covered seating, it's probably taken in the 1990s, I might guess the earlier 1990s.
You're going to need a serious nerd to recognise the seat colour scheme, which should get you the airline.
hawkeye18@reddit
Yeah I used to fly United halfway around the world twice a year as a kid in the 90s, I instantly recognized this color scheme haha
Yummy_Crayons91@reddit
I'm not a Nerd, but that seat coloring looks a lot like Pre-Merger United Airlines in the early 90s.
FelisCantabrigiensis@reddit
I think you are right, and you may be a nerd :)
UTFTCOYB_Hibboriot@reddit
United 100%
cyberentomology@reddit
What we know: it’s a narrowbody/single aisle. In 1998 United fleet, that would most likely be 737 or 757.
cyberentomology@reddit
Definitely people.
jggearhead10@reddit
I believe this was United’s interior in some of their planes during the Battleship Grey livery era. Interior looks Boeing. Based on the wing shape, my guess is that you were sitting aft of the wing on a 727
PacSan300@reddit
I think they had this interior even with the earlier Saul Bass colors.
Active_Resource_3533@reddit
You can’t see the fairings on a 727 wing from their perspective inside the plane.
PrimeNumbersAreMyJam@reddit
This is correct. I came to say the exact same thing. This is the interior from the mid/late-80s through the early 2000s, I think. So we could look at their fleet during that time period that had 3-X-3 or just 3-3 seating on a narrowbody.
Unhappy_Pollution106@reddit
That’s N540UA.
matsutaketea@reddit
nah its gotta be N515UA
matty__poppins@reddit
Nah those are people, not aircraft
RepublicWonderful@reddit
Look at that padding on the seat
Upper-Wind-2055@reddit
I was a mechanic at United then. We repurposed a lot of those seats later. They were great for taking a break behind the hangar.
MisterFreeman8@reddit
Come on, she's not that huge...
mattyGOAT1996@reddit
It looks like a 757
LordCrayCrayCray@reddit
That seat is thick!
Huge-Coyote-6586@reddit
Look at that leg room...
mb4828@reddit
I miss these seats so much
PrestigiousCat72@reddit
Any time I get on an older plane I feel like "this is so much better".
jpmaster33@reddit
Back when every seat was first class. When I ride in Alaska E175s I pay the 50 extra bucks to sit in the front and I’m soooo comfortable.
SpotOutside6556@reddit
Those seats were so comfortable.
Unfair-Equipment6@reddit
Those seats look comfy as heck
evcarl01@reddit
Looks like a UA 757 by the windows and the sidewall panels
rossoner0@reddit
Bro, that one‘s for the mega nerds…

Conscious-Word8605@reddit
Not necessarily might some old timers about who worked them

That lady reminds me of rose west
californiasamurai@reddit
Based off seats, United. Probably Boeing.
w4559@reddit
I know one thing, that looks nothing like coach today.
Majortom_67@reddit
737
dmmetz@reddit
Going with Boeing 737-500 or 300, with outside shot of 757-200
Tough to tell for sure though, but definitely either a 737 Classic or 757
YMMV25@reddit
Definitely a Boeing aircraft and based on the wing it’s definitely not a 727 or 737.
I agree with others that 757 sounds the most likely. Wing looks somewhat big for a 757 to me but it’s definitely not a 767 or 777 either. Not swept enough to be a 747.
Velocoraptor369@reddit
I believe it’s a 757 based on seats E and F as stated above plus the canoe fairings match the 757.
Active_Resource_3533@reddit
It’s a 757
