Finally decided to get a virtual machine with Ubuntu since a lot of my projects require it. I was trying to run off of Windows subsystem Linux, just wasn't working.

Wsl isn’t ready for MainStage
ParrotRunner586@reddit
It’s not
ZunoJ@reddit
Your projects specifically require Ubuntu? Why?
Shap6@reddit
Is there something wrong with ubuntu?
ZunoJ@reddit
Yes
Shap6@reddit
such as?
ZunoJ@reddit
Snap. Not only in and of itself (it is absolute awful, closed source crap though) but also that ubuntu tries it's best to prohibit you from removing it
Tsubajashi@reddit
snap isnt entirely closed source. the store is.
ZunoJ@reddit
Yeah, one half of the eco system is closed source and constantly delivering malware
Tsubajashi@reddit
which can happen to effectively every platform.
ZunoJ@reddit
Sure it can but somehow it does happen a lot more often when nobody can see the package definitions. Almost as if people would look inside to make sure nothing malicious gets pulled
Tsubajashi@reddit
not many people do so. and so far, canonical has implemented a few layers of protection in the process of getting apps into the store.
i may not like snap due to other reasons, but we dont have to yell at it the wrong way.
ZunoJ@reddit
Ok, got it. You are the authority that decides what reasons to not like it are OK or not OK. After all you also know how many people take a look into package configurations. That's very impressive, nobody else seems to know this!
Tsubajashi@reddit
no, i am not. also, how did that xz issue go? just one person noticed it, and only because it took him a few ms longer to run his ssh command. if that dude wouldn't have researched where the issue came from, the internet would've been in great danger. given you want to act out that way - how about you bring other issues from snap to the table instead of yelling at the clouds.
ZunoJ@reddit
So whataboutism is your way of validating your opinion. Awesome!
Tsubajashi@reddit
nope, its a reallife scenario we ALL encountered.
unlike you, who tries to put snap in a worse light than it actually is.
Fake Crypto Apps - store - snapcraft.io
Phishing app on the snap store -- is my computer compromised? - snapcraft - snapcraft.io
Temporary suspension of automatic snap registration following security incident - store - snapcraft.io
so 2 times, not constantly, with a now manual review in place, see here:
Latest none topics in store-requests - snapcraft.io
so yea. they had issues, and began solving them. i dont see an issue there in any way.
maybe dont hyperbole whenever a discussion comes up.
Shikadi297@reddit
Crappy OS upgrades, out of date libraries, poor dependency management, and for some reason software that says you need to build on some specific Ubuntu version doesn't build on that Ubuntu version half the time.
Dexterus@reddit
Cause Linux distros. It's common to only support a handful of distros with a single, maybe 2 supported versions per distro.
ZunoJ@reddit
What do you mean by "Cause linux distros"? I mean yeah, it is a distro and that's why I'm asking. Do you want to say he maybe uses a specialized software that only supports Ubuntu?
Dexterus@reddit
Every Linux distro is their own microcosm. A lot of software is built and tested on just a handful of them. Changhing distro leads to missing or incompatible requirements and you're sol. That's why OP needs Ubuntu.
ZunoJ@reddit
Do you know of any software that runs ONLY on ubuntu but not, let's say, debian or mint?
Username_1987_@reddit (OP)
A lot of the AI projects I've been trying to do requires some form of debian and just wouldn't work on windows like torch, torchaudio, etc. Python is seemingly more stable on debian based systems and Ubuntu is the most stable debian system from my experiences. Plus it works with my virtual environment. Most of my projects have revolved around making something that can talk with mimicking human thought. And every time I try to install requirements, the best way to install them was well Linux.

If you want to try using Gnome inside WSL 2 and access it locally and not via the network, here's how you can do it:

ZunoJ@reddit
Stable as in the linux sense of stable or do you mean reliable?
CommercialPug@reddit
The point is that the software will probably run on most distros but the devs will only say "supported on Ubuntu 24.04 and Fedora 40" because they can't test every distro. OP has just went with the supported distro.
ZunoJ@reddit
I understand that but I never came across anything that supports only ubuntu. You seem confident that there is such a thing and I wonder what it is
mrvictorywin@reddit
Usually that's not that case but not using the recommended distro may cause library version conflicts etc. so a single distro may be recommended for certain commercial projects.
ZunoJ@reddit
Do you know any example that ONLY recommends Ububtu?
mrlinkwii@reddit
many corporate contracts/ software only mention Ubuntu/ a certain version of Ubuntu
mrcruton@reddit
Man ur using unactivated windows make the full switch brothaa
Username_1987_@reddit (OP)
Can't right now, and I still wanna use windows for gaming. Also some of the programs I use and need don't have a Linux alternative. None that I think anyways.
