Paywalled article!
Anyhow, the iPhone 16 seems like just another refresh, with so-called "A.I." capabilities and a dedicated camera shutter button, alongside the customary generational performance bump and other improvements of that nature.
Hardly noteworthy, in my opinion.
I mean, compare this mediocrity to iPhone 6’s launch pre-hype exactly a decade ago. Everyone was talking about the iPhone 6, even those who weren't into smartphones or electronics in general.
I suppose it's no surprise their smartphone sales have declined by a rather steep 10% in Q1 2024 alone. It sure seems like iPhone is becoming the new BlackBerry. It's powerful and usable, sure, but it's also just... there.
The last iPhone that could be considered "exciting" was the iPhone X, launched... seven years ago?
It's been that long already?!

Now that's a surprise to be sure but a welcome one.

It is a surprise, it seems like they put thought into it making it function with the haptic engine and have the ability to sense touch. It's probably satisfying to use.
I was also surprised to see it because it feels very not-Jobsian.

It's noteworthy for having 4K 120fps ProRes output with LOG color. That's something not many dedicated cameras can handle.
I don't know how valuable the AI stuff will be, but the SoC in this phone is incredible and from a technology standpoint that's pretty exciting to me anyway.
mckeitherson@reddit
It's noteworthy for people who are a few upgrade cycles behind, or are interested in the baseline device sharing features that are usually reserved for a Pro/Max/Ultra flagship level.
Hard to believe when Apple makes up like 40-50ish% of US smart phone sales.

The blackberry analogy is absurd. BlackBerry lost out to iPhones. iPhones are just losing out to the iPhones people already have.
lcirufe@reddit
The only noteworthy thing this generation on the iPhone is just in software, which is coming to older iPhones.

All the low hanging fruit is gone. And i use a 15 pro max. The experience sucks, apps freeze all the time. Have to restart them. Android never had this issue for me. The watch is good. I hope apple AND samsung AND google get sued for their anticompetitive practices
ThatRoboticsGuy@reddit
I think you might need your phone fixing, I use an iPhone 13 Pro Max and don’t have app freezing issues…
gunfell@reddit
It is an issue on newer iphones only. It is all of forums
derpybacon@reddit
As opposed to every other smartphone manufacturer which is doing… the exact same thing? At best they’re stapling on AI features and making $2000 foldables. Smartphones are a very mature technology.
ZigZagZor@reddit
No, iPhone is not BlackBerry. The fact is that people are now holding onto their phones longer for upto 5 or 6 years because the performance is already more than enough. That's why Apple has significantly focused on the services to increase revenue lost from iphone stagnation.
GenZia@reddit
Personally, that doesn't explain the steep 10% decline in smartphone sales over just 3 months.
For example, Apple rolled out OS updates for the iPhone 6S for nearly 8 years and unless I'm mistaken, it still receives security updates.
So, if anything, people should have been holding on to their iPhones for a long time now, considering the iPhone 6S is 9 years ago at this point.

Apple launching new iPhones... in September! Can't be! Thanks for sharing.
Violetmars@reddit
Ikr I was waiting for them to launch dildos, thanks to this article I am now informed
kyralfie@reddit
Well, you could still technically shove it up your ass.
MonteBellmond@reddit
for a mere $1000
Famous_Wolverine3203@reddit
I’d imagine there are a few ahem toys out there that are probably more expensive than iphones themselves.
So a 1000 dollar product would not be out of the range for some people.
I kept it as PG as I could lol.

I think paywalled article should not be in subreddit.
