Project Daytona is on the road

Photos in order are: 1. Glamour shot that Google AI'd into sunset 2&3. Couple iterations of radiator hose setup after fitting it with a civic radiator 4. Live photo exported into a GIF 5. Roller my buddy took without me knowing
Last weekend finished front end suspension rebuild (getting an alignment this week), this weekend finished fitting up a civic radiator with some temporary mounting for testing.
Took it out for the first time since the suspension rebuild today. For the first time in years it actually feels like a car to drive. Steering is the straightest it's ever been despite still not being aligned, and the car can actually take a corner. A few weeks ago when I took it out for it's first proper drive after swapping in a good engine, it was horrifying in even mild corners. Now if it had good tires it might be able to keep up with my buddy's fiesta on a winding road if we removed his turbo.
Engine is fully stock 2.2 Turbo II with a fresh turbo. There's still some stuff I want to do. Wideband gauge to make sure it doesn't blow up, followed by boost controller since the computer actively limits boost at lower rpm despite being mapped to provide appropriate fueling for the whole rpm band up to 14.7 psi of boost. Stock boost is 12. Also want to add a rear sway bar and stickier tires. I don't even know what brand the tires on there are but they don't grip well. Walmart specials.

Love these. A friend had one just out of high school. '85 Turbo Z. All black. Turbo I with auto and man that sucker buried that speedo like it was friggin broken. It wasn't. She was a runner

I had a spirit with the same engine and loved it, always really liked those Daytonas

It's a cool engine! It feels like a first attempt at what became really common in the 2010s. Smaller engines with turbochargers to rival larger displacement engines.
IntrstlarOvrdrve@reddit
I’d say that was the turbo I, I had an Omni GLH and the turbo III in the spirit was wayyyy more refined.

Turbo II definitely seems like the more desirable setup. I do love the Turbo II's character though.

The digital dash and the pop up headlights give me such joy
Cruisn06@reddit
Love the pop ups.

That dash is sick!
Mrinohk@reddit (OP)
It is! It's one of my favorite parts of the car.

The 2.6 Mitsubishi turbo from a conquest will fit with minor modifications 😁 There's probably none left on the road anymore though.

On the test drive yesterday that the POV gif is from I did actually see a conquest/starion parked in front of a house out in those fields.

Get that boost controller and soon as possible, makes a huge difference. Had an 89 dodge caravan turbo for a long time.
Mrinohk@reddit (OP)
That's the plan. I just want to make sure I can see AFR first to be safe.
Fakyutsu@reddit
You should fab up some custom brackets to hold your radiator instead of just zip ties. Other than that, it looks sweet!
Mrinohk@reddit (OP)
Very much on the to-do. The POV gif was from yesterday and was the first longer drive with the radiator on. Now that I know it's good I've got some ideas for how to adapt it to the stock mounts for the car.

Get an alignment

Next on the list

That is awesome, I love to see those cars from that era. Very, very few on the road anymore. Well done :D

It has been a while since i have seen one of these. Worked with a guy in 01 that drove a Shelby Daytona it was a fairly peppy little car for it's time.
Sierraink@reddit
Had a 92 and loved it.

Sick. Love the dash. Nice work mate.

I had a NA 5 speed '88 in the early 90s. I kind of miss it. I've been toying with the idea of finding another. K cars are really getting scarce though.

Very nice.

It would seem that the app ruined my list formatting upon posting. Thanks reddit.
