SPAM for dinner? By choice! They are early 20s. I'm traumatized from SPAM, government cheese and powdered milk growing up. I feel like I'm gonna wretch. 🤢🤮 Somebody get me the garden hose, ASAP!!!!!! Anyone else's kids actually like SPAM? In 2024? Did I go through a wormhole back to the 70s/80s? Help!!!!!

Can't help you. I'm from Hawaii. We love spam here.
JCo1968@reddit
I lived in Hawaii for 25 years, I eat SPAM.
PsychologicalMix8499@reddit
I got older and I told my wife let’s get some spam I use to eat it when I was a kid. I took one bite and threw it out.
SorbetImpressive3836@reddit
Spam musubi, that's all.
imalloverthemap@reddit
Just had two of them for dinner. Yum
derbyvoice71@reddit
My first thought too.
Also, wonder that OP must have issues with the weird meat section at Aldi - canned oysters, kippered herring, sardines, all the weird, good shit.
MowgeeCrone@reddit
Isn't that a form of self harm?
Ger8nium@reddit (OP)
I agree!!!!!
One-Earth9294@reddit
Spam's okay. Bit salty though.
No-Ambition7750@reddit
I was more of a Hormel deviled ham/chicken kind of guy.

That chicken was the best.

Next you know they’ll be loving tripe too.

I hated it as a kid. And viennea sausages and potted meat. All things my dad would try to feed me during our visitations because it was cheap. I did finally start to like Spam again in my around 40 and now I do enjoy an occasional fried spam and cheese sandwich. My wife also makes great masubi and it is incredible fried with garlic fried rice. But potted meat and Vienna sausages can still both rot in hell.
Sandi_T@reddit
My 17-year-old loves it. I slice it and deep fry it.
I have never even tried it (and never will).
ssk7882@reddit
I didn't grow up eating it. At one point in my late 20s, an old college friend discovered it while staying with a Filipina friend of his, and fried some up for me. Fried to crispiness, served on rice, with a couple of fried eggs for breakfast. I thought it was pretty good, although I never actually got in the habit of buying it for myself.
corpusapostata@reddit
Spam is too damned expensive. It's luxury food now.
Definitive_confusion@reddit
Bro, you don't like spam? You're a monster.
Also, obligatory Monty Python reference...
You could have eggs bacon sausage and spam, that hasn't much spam in it.
discogeek@reddit
Spam spam spam spam sausage and spam.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
I DON'T LIKE SPAM!
IceLapplander@reddit
Spam spam spam! Spam spam spam! Spam spammity spam!
Muggi@reddit
Fuck that, SPAM and powdered milk are awesome
koine2004@reddit
It’s a thing. There’s a revival of Spam, Vienna Sausages, and 🤮 potted meat.
Madrugada2010@reddit
Hey, I like spam. It's a common ingredient in kimbap.
FarkMonkey@reddit
I love SPAM. There's like 15 different varieties at my store.
Fry it up with some potatoes and green beans? Hell yeah.
bspanther71@reddit
I still love spam (53).
lawstandaloan@reddit
We were in Minnesota last month and stopped in at the SPAM museum. Ok, we drove 2 hours out of our way to go to the SPAM museum. It was fun-ish and they had a lot of cool SPAM merch. Free samples too

Nothing wrong with SPAM here and there.
My grandmother hated chicken because of the depression - it's all they ate.
You can get burnt out on anything.
porkchopespresso@reddit
My dad used to make Spam occasionally but as far as I remember it was just because he liked it, not because of cost. I actually never knew what it was and I guess I had no curiosity. Whatever my parents made for dinner I just ate it. I don’t remember liking it or not liking it.
It wasn’t until I was much older that I learned it was like, “a thing.” I guess it’s cheap canned food and something about Hawaiians liking it?
kimbersill@reddit
It was a good source of protein when supplies/groceries are limited. It has an awesome shelf life. When they have to fly everything in it gets expensive as hell. I don't think foods are as limited as it was in the past, so now I think it's probably become family traditional food
the_spinetingler@reddit
I fry up some spam (cast iron skillet) with Cajon seasoning, slice some sharp cheddar on top, and serve in a buttermilk biscuit about every other month.
SeethingHeathen@reddit
Fried SPAM and potatoes are great. Not all the time, but every now and again it just hits the spot. Add some corn and make some fry bread, and it's even better.
Jeebusmanwhore@reddit
I can't remember ever having eaten Spam. My food trauma was liver and onions. My mom loved it and made that at least once every couple of weeks while I was growing up. I stopped eating dinner at home on those nights when I got my first job. The moment she pulled it out of the refrigerator to cook it, I left. The smell of liver cooking still makes me sick.
Ger8nium@reddit (OP)
OMG. You have my sincere sympathies. I'm glad my mom never made liver and onions. Spam is no trauma compared, I think, to liver!
ElectroSpore@reddit
It is easy to hate things you were FORECED to eat and also if they were prepared badly.
I ended up discovering I actually liked a number of things if they where prepared differently.
Also if they are in their early 20s they are probably BROKE AS FUCK or ultra house poor, so it makes sense, it was always a low cost option.
nygrl811@reddit
I thought corned beef was the texture of beef jerky growing up because my nana boiled it to oblivion. Hated it. Until my friend's mom served this moist, juicy beef with a bit of a tang. Still don't love it, but made a massive difference when cooked properly!!!

I still can't eat brussels sprouts. I know they are different now, but that old taste is something I can't forget.
Ger8nium@reddit (OP)
They live with me, though. Fully stocked fridge. They went to the store and bought spam by choice. Don't wanna sound like a snob, just thought it odd they have so many options that they chose something my broke ass family only ate bc we had no other options. But then again, my mom boiled brussel sprouts (hated them!) and I do like them roasted properly today. 🤷
Ok_Television9820@reddit
Spam is great! Fry it up with egg, sausage, spamx sausage, spam, and spam.
Powdered milk is another story.
Ger8nium@reddit (OP)
When will I know there is enough spam in this dish? Asking for a friend.
Ok_Television9820@reddit
99% spam and one sprig of parsley is getting close. Add some spam to be safe.
Ger8nium@reddit (OP)
Got it! Thank you Julia Childs! I'm a huge fan, you rock! 😂

What traumatized you about SPAM? We used to have it on vacations and picnics, it was kind of a treat (not at TREET, mind you, only SPAM would do). I still get a can occasionally and have it sliced and fried, or cubed and mixed with scrambled eggs or fried potatoes.
Ger8nium@reddit (OP)
I just... can't. My dad loved it and everyone else hated it but Mom made it for dad. So maybe I should appreciate that she did it for him. Sadly they are both gone now. But you still ain't gonna catch me eatin' spam ever again. Just a reminder of how poor we were, I guess.
bodizadfa@reddit
Make some toast, slather on some good mustard, fry up a couple thick slices of spam, a slice of cheddar cheese and you have yourself one helluva sandwich.
