What Was Your Mix Tape FM Station?

WAPP Lake Successssss! Hey kids, pre music streaming we actually had to get 60 and 90 minutes cassettes made in Japan by companies like TDK at Jamesway (a sort of Target), put it in our made in Hong Kong boombox and WAIT for our song to come on. It was tricky, you waited for Casey Kassem or other DJ to shut up and not cut off too much of the beginning. I actually got fairly sophisticated at this for a ten year old. I think the first song I actually “ripped” decently was 867-5309 Jenny. I wish I still had them🙃

I remember WAPP, but must admit that (as a HUGE roller skater,) I preferred WKTU.

KROQ and KMET in Los Angeles. I still have a couple of radio-recorded mix tapes stored away for a nostalgia trip someday. There's one that's all punk songs with Rodney Bingenheimer as the DJ, from the Rodney On The Roq show.

+1 for KROQ. I grew up buying the Kevin and Bean Christmas album til KROQ went hip hop

KROQ ruled. Sadly we couldn’t pick it up here BFE Central Valley.

Never just one station.
New Orleans had WRNO 99.5 (classic rock), B-97 (pop rock), WYLD 98.5 (r&b), and WTUL 91.5 (college station).

When hip hop got really popular along with break dancing, it was Power 99 FM out of Philly.
Later, as I got more into rock, it was a toss-up between 93.3 WMMR and 94.1 WYSP in Philly but also 97.9 (98 Rock) from Baltimore.

We definitely got MMR in Jersey. In the 80’s it rocked out like a mofo. A HUGE mix tape station 🙂
