Like most, I'm an insta-buyer anywhere near $2K, but if these clones fall to < $900, it's going to be tough to hold out.
willihavealife@reddit
As a gun noob, what would be the benefit of buying a legit version over the clone? Is the quality that much better to be double the cost?
EdgarsRavens@reddit
MKE owners like to parrot the "just as good" line, but the reality is that there are some downsides going with MKE over HK.
Some MKE guns have issues with extracting and feeding often requiring the extractor, ejector, and springs to be changed to HK ones. And sometimes running German magazines. This pretty much always solves the issue but obviously costs money and can impact the value proposition of the MKE gun.
A lot of MKE guns have issues feeding holopoint or blunt tip ammo. This can be a downside if you want to shoot subsonic ammo that is blunt tip or holopoints for home defense. There really isn't a solution to this issue.
Very rarely MKE guns can be lemons from the factory. This is not a big deal since the importer will almost always replace the gun, but it is an annoying hassle.
When the HK guns were $3000-$3500 it made a lot of financial sense to go with the MKE guns and address the quirks as they came up. You could get an AP5 and an AP5 for the price of just an SP5. But as the HK guns get cheaper and cheaper, closing in on $2000 for the SP5 and $2300 for the SP5K, that value proposition slowly starts to evaporate.
Bourbon-neat-@reddit
Maybes aside, and they are maybes cause plenty of folks myself included get Makes that run flawlessly out of the box, it's wild that saying a hypothetical 200% price increase is "value proposition starting to evaporate"
For half the cost of the magical 2k line that may or may not ever materialize. You can get an AP5, suppressor and tri-lug adapter, optic, brace or stock pay your stamp taxes and have enough left over for ammo to break in your gun without scaring the 2k mark let alone the 2.3k historic BIN price.
If you're dead set on the roll mark and have the extra rack to burn sure get an HK, they're definitely nicer but to me it's crazy talk to spend 2x for just the gun when you could have 90% of the gun and all the other bells and whistles and spend less.
EdgarsRavens@reddit
Yes. I literally said that; "If an MP5 is your dream gun buy the HK SP5. If you just think they are cool and want a fun range toy get the MKE AP5."
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
Because it's the original. Everything else is just a copy. Maybe a very good copy that will bring years of enjoyment, but still a clone.
If you don't need or care for the HK stamp, then buy a clone and spend the rest on ammo. You'll probably have more fun anyway.
Bumblescrub709@reddit
The clones are closer to an actual MP5 than the SP5 is.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
Which is better?
ShittyTechnical@reddit
It’s also an MP5 clone, it’s just from the original manufacturer of the MP5
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
Correct. Just a tiny little, but important, difference.
DonArgueWithMe@reddit
Aside from rollmark the ap5 is actually more like the mp5 than an sp5 is, for example the bolt carrier and guide rod are different on the sp5 but the same on the other two
redacted_robot@reddit
This. ^ And I bought HK and SBR'd it. I only did it because I got the USP Tactical set of pistols to go with it. Otherwise fuck it.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
How did you do the engraving? I'm about to do the SBR on my Dissent. Incredible pistol, BTW.
redacted_robot@reddit
Had it done for me by an old guy with an old school engraver setup. Did it down in the recess of the frame where the Harbor Safety stock legs go.
I want to get a dissent, but already have 9/40/45 banshees SBR'd. Thinking mk47 will be my next cmmg.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
Awesome. There's a local guy that does engraving, but I've heard of people DIY'n it.
The Dissent has been incredibly fun. Radial delayed isn't quite roller delayed, but it still shoots incredibly soft, and the stock trigger (TriggerTech) is really good. They aren't cheap, though, but it's been a great suppressor host, too.
redacted_robot@reddit
To do it over I'd have someone laser it. Or just buy a laser setup and start charging people. Luckily I did half my sbr's on amnesty.
Radial is, or can be, just as good as Roller with it setup correctly. The banshee does suffer from spring/tube sound at the ear, but the Dissent shouldn't have that issue, so I'm interested to know where your issues are with it compared to roller.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
No issues at all with the Dissent. I absolutely love it, and part of the reason I haven't, yet, bought an HK is because I'm afraid I'll be disappointed in comparison to the Dissent. I mean, you get all of the advantages the modularity of the AR15 provides, i.e. grip, trigger, rails, brace/stock, and so on.
That said, HK created a masterpiece with their roller delayed design. It is the pinnacle of soft shooting in 9mm, but I know the Dissent's trigger is better, and I'm admittedly a trigger snob.
But, the "slap". Peak larping.
redacted_robot@reddit
LOL, HK trigger does blow.. I saw someone put a Super Safety in one of those AR pattern MP5 lowers. I'm assuming the SS could be put in a Banshee too. I wonder if it could be put in a Dissent.
Fake full auto is really peak larping when it comes to 9mm happiness.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
Dissent is AR15 compatible. I don't know if I'd go the Super Safety route, or Binary, or forced reset.
What I probably will do, though, is get another Geissele SSA-E X Lightning Bow. I have one in an AR22 (Bore Buddy upper with LMT lower), and that trigger is a cheat code. I've had two people come up to me on the range and ask if it's full auto. Obviously, it is not. The trigger is just that fast. No take up, immediate clicky reset. Once you find your rhythm you can spit bullets downrange at an astounding rate. The amazing part is it's controllable, so every shot is still right on target. I guess that could be because it's just 22LR...lol.
redacted_robot@reddit
I'll have to try one of those ssa-e x lightening bows out. Interested to know if it works like that with other setups. The SS and FRT both seem better than binary thus far.
Full auto is weird though, it just wants to walk. It's hard to keep my machine gun on target for a full 50rd mag. Which is why I think the resetting triggers are so promising for intermediate cartridges.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
Wait for the next sale. They just had them at ~$200-ish. Regular price is like $320.
You obviously know more about full auto than me, but while I'm not poor, I still can't afford to waste ammo. I try to always shoot with a purpose. If I can't 100% control where the bullet goes every time I pull the trigger, it's just not enjoyable.
I do love to throw bullets downrange at high volume as long as I'm still hitting my target. That's why 22LR is so much fun, especially suppressed, and also why we love 9mm so much. It's the next cheapest commercially available round. And, moreso because it's centerfire and a legitimate NATO round.
TheBoringInvestor96@reddit
For me personally, an extra $1000 is an insignificant amount in the grand scheme of things, as I am the buy and never sell camp when it comes to quality firearms. Yeah I could save $1000 but then everytime I bring it out to shoot there will be a voice behind my head that whispers “You have a clone, a replica, a copy, a wannabe HK”. Same reason why I buy genuine part for my car even though there probably are studies out there that show you can buy an aftermarket one that would be 90% as good for 50% of the cost, some people think that’s ok and some people don’t, just boils down to what makes you happy.
Thansungst22@reddit
If you follow the MP5 community, you'd know they all agreed that the AP5 is actually the closest to the MP5 vs the SP5 that HK made
The AP5 is actually made on original HK toolings and is the closest to the MP5 people think of in terms of specs
But I understand your point about the rollmark though
Personally I'm gonna get the AP5 when it dip to $900 and spend the rest on accessories and ammo and SBR and can stamps
Since it's actually the closest to a real MP5 spec-wise over the SP5
I'd buy the SP5 if it ever hit $2k though COPIUM
Kermut@reddit
I mean I bet the SP5 is better quality than the AP5 by a fair bit, and I say that as a AP5/p enthusiast with a few thousand rounds at this point.
Still not enough to get me to drop $2.5k tho
Thansungst22@reddit
Yeah I'm sure fit and finish gonna be better since it still HK
But for $2.5k I can literally get a SBR stamp and a can and then have some left over for optics and accessories if I go AP5 route.
I'm hoping Black Friday gonna drop the prices of AP5 down under $1k so I can buy in.
Not feeling the $1250+ prices right now
Trololoumadbro@reddit
If this year is a repeat of last, and if I remember correctly, the best MP5 clone deals were in September and the Black Friday deals were pretty “okay”. Hopefully dealers impress a little more this year.
Thansungst22@reddit
If it this month then I'll send it but finger crossed

Extra $1500
ShittyTechnical@reddit
To be fair the SP5 is an MP5 clone too, it’s just an MP5 clone made by HK
Sunder92@reddit
Just a note on the car analogy.
OEM parts just (kind of) meet a certain standard set by the OEMs. There are many aftermarket parts that exceed that standard and cost less.
I like to think of OEM parts as baselines and is the minimum quality of parts I'd get.
ShadyClouds@reddit
No it’s not, unless you want a sp5 for the originality and historical context the clones will work fine, I have a sp5 and a zenith K clone and my $3000 sp5 has pretty much the same problems, crooked front sight post, worse trigger in my opinion, cocking tube is slightly twisted. Sure the sp5 is way more reliable cycling out of the box but it also cost me $2050 more. Just my two cents.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
The fact that HK would put out a crooked front sight post and a slightly twisted cocking tube tells us that they put their least experienced employees on the manufacturing line for these guns. And I guess with no real QA/QC. It makes sense, as they're very old tech, and nobody is buying these versions to put into service.
HK still makes state of the art fighting guns that service men and women use in battle. These are not those guns.
Even more of a reason to buy a clone and spend the rest on a suppressor and ammo.
Kozak170@reddit
Yeah I spent a long time going back and forth, and it was even a much higher premium back then, and I really couldn’t come up with any proven metric where the SP5 was justified other than the roll mark. Both have issues, granted the SP5 much less, but still, both companies will fix it or replace the gun entirely if you do get a dud.
Idk, I’m happy to admit it could all be cope, but I love my AP5 and don’t at all regret not getting the “real” thing.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
All responsible enthusiasts have a budget, and we all want to wring out as much enjoyment at the range as possible while staying within our budgets. If a person's budget allows them to buy an HK and not sacrifice elsewhere, then good for them. If they need to buy a clone in order to still get a suppressor and a lot of ammo, then that is the right decision for them.
The HK stamp is cool. No doubt. I want one, but if I ever see a reputable clone for $899.99, I'm buying it.
Kozak170@reddit
I mean totally, I’m not refuting that at all. If I truly had the budget where a few bands didn’t matter I’d think the same way.
Unfortunately though that’s not the case for me and I assume most people here, those savings would be much better placed in more ammo or attachments for the gun.
NeckPourConnoisseur@reddit
You nailed it. This is the truth.
hbatneal@reddit
I am talking to a distributor this week about the AP5 Base model. Should be able to get the gun, along, and extra mag for about 1220 total. Right now dealer price on these is nowhere near 1K range unfortunately.
PerfectFault9739@reddit
Hey mate bit of an oddball question but do you mind if I ask you if I’m getting hosed on a threaded 8.9” AP5 base I plan on picking up next week?

How easy are these to sell? I've always wanted an SP5K, never owned a gun before, and knowing that I could fairly easily get most of my money back would really help me stomach the $$$. Not that I would sell it, but psychologically, knowing that I could...
dankmelk@reddit
I see them all the time on my local trader for $2k+. Definitely doesn’t lose much value at all

Cash for Arm recently offered me $1900 for my SP5K in excellent condition and has about 250 rounds thru it. Declined the offer but you have the idea

I spent the day reading about what parts to change on your HK clone if it doesn’t eject, has problems, etc. Now that the real HKs are available (unlike a few years ago), it’s probably not worth the hassle to get a clone.
DovhPasty@reddit
Nope, still definitely worth it to get a clone, at least from a monetary standpoint.
