why do republicans act like school shootings are unpreventable natural events?

I mean %99 of the world doesn't have this problem, so why not follow their policies? my country (turkey) has the biggest rate of gun deaths compared to Europe but we still don't have school shootings (and hopefully we won't in the future) it must be horrifying for students to know that they might be killed while playing ball on PE, because some mentally ill ignored kid snapped and bought a gun. aren't republican parents worried about this too? what about the gun rights they support ends up killing their kid? tldr; if the rest of the world doesn't have school shootings, america should stop acting like school shootings are unpreventable.

I been to Turkey, and there is alot of kidnappings by government against political rivals and LGBTQ folks.
Fix your own country first before talking about my country!

I think we should all be able to call out the problems in each other’s countries without getting defensive
boracay302@reddit
Your proposal to take away our gun rights is not the solution.
Onedrunkpanda@reddit
I been to Turkey too and I think it’s a wonderful country. Maybe do a little soul searching and ask why our little ones getting gun down in school is okay.

Et tu quoque?

Are you asking about the JD Vance quote that’s running around Reddit?

yeah

to be fair, that one guy in the UK (i think the mayor of London?) said terrorism was part and parcel of living in a major city.
that is to say politicians say dumb shit. look at any of them. Trump, Harris, Clinton, Bush...pick one. they all do it. I would be hard pressed to believe this isnt the case in Turkey.
shit even Obama said some dumb shit, and he was smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy.

His words reflect the general attitude of American conservatives and the (lack of) policy decisions made over the last 10 years.

i heard in some states you can't get guns at 18, that's why i said that. especially Russia had some school shootings and in some parts of Europe too, I'm not arguing with that, but you can't deny it's worse in america.
azuth89@reddit
Well, it's always two options:
They don't believe the proposed measures would actually stop anything.
Inclusive or:
The proposed measures aren't something they or their supporters are willing to do, whatever that may cost, which is where you've gotten years of talking around the question.
There are lots of variances and overlaps with other stances, but ultimately one or both of these will be present.
palmettoswoosh@reddit
Bc discussing otherwise would mean they'd have to go find a job to do something else for $175k a year plus govt benefits.
They say put metal detectors in schools and search bags. Rather than ask "should we really be metal detecting kids st school? Shouldn't schools be places for kids to be safe?".
Then they say "good guys with guns". Meanwhile the useless cops in armor stopped their own cop from possibly saving his wife's life and however many kids lives.
RebelSoul5@reddit
The political answer is: they’ll argue that if you ban assault rifles, then it won’t stop — people will move to ban handguns, etc etc…
The real (Jim Jeffries) reason is: Fuck off … I like guns…
Some people just think guns are really cool to collect, display, shoot and all that so they don’t want any laws that might upend that to any extent.
attlerexLSPDFR@reddit
Republican voters tend to be older folks who aren't at risk. School shootings are just news stories, their grandchildren graduated 10 years ago.
You fear the unknown, and you don't care about the unknown. Deadly apathy.
Joliet-Jake@reddit
A quick Google search for “Mass Shootings in Turkey” seems to suggest that it happens there too.
Studious_Noodle@reddit
Some people think guns are more important than kids.
carolinaindian02@reddit
And some people who just simply don’t believe in prioritizing mental health.
saginator5000@reddit
Why are you so focused on the guns? It's a mental health issue, not a gun availability issue. Otherwise school shootings wouldn't be a more recent phenomena.
I'm not saying Republicans (or Democrats for that matter) are talking about real solutions to the mental health crisis, but taking away our right to purchase and own a firearm is a bad solution.
SpaceCrazyArtist@reddit
Poor education, not enough resources and half the government not understanding their only job is to manage said resources for the goid of society has led people to be mentally drained. Then you have volatile media like fox and parents who dont parent and you get kids shooting over kids.
Usually these kids are suicidal themselves. Actually most mass shootings happen from people who are suicidal.
It’s just all around bad. And these AHs would rather complain about unborn embryos than do anything about the actual living breathing children
forwardobserver90@reddit
There are many solutions to school shootings that don’t involve destroying constitutionally protected rights.
Arleare13@reddit
Because it’s easier than discussing actual solutions.
