how to get rid of slugs in bedroom?
Posted by Excellent_Dress7815@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 31 comments
Nothing has annoyed me more than these fucking slugs. My skirting board isn’t sealed to the floor and these pissing ugly yellow brown slugs keep getting in. It’s usually at night and i hear them munching on either my dresser or my window ledge. Just eating the wood of it. Who would’ve thought the little fucks would be so loud. Their trails have been all over my clothes, my floor, my walls. It’s doing my nut in. Any help/advice is appreciated as i am just about fed up with these ugly little things.

In your bedroom? Are you camping?
Excellent_Dress7815@reddit (OP)
Nope. 2nd floor of the house. Fucking horrendous
LockingSwitch@reddit
This isn't a skirting board problem. As they'd still just be under the floor anyway....
Excellent_Dress7815@reddit (OP)
Must be as my floors are boarded up fully. Just there is one wall we’re the skirting board isn’t sealed at the bottom as there used to be some sort of furniture there so they just didn’t seal it. And it’s the one wall that connects to the outside as all other walls are either to the next room to the hallway or shared with next door. They only appear on that side of the room.

You could try using caulk sealant on the gap. But I think it's likely that you've got a leak or damp somewhere. I had a slug nightmare in a basement flat but you shouldn't be getting this on the second floor.
Have you tried a dehumidifier?
LockingSwitch@reddit
Then you must have slugs all over under your floorboards...
That's not right.

From what i’ve seen online and on reddit. It actually is quite common for slugs to come in whether that be through your skirting boards, through bricks, through your window. They can squeeze through tiny amounts of space. I don’t really care about their entry and how “right” it is. I care about getting rid of them.

I used to live in slugtopia and they still never came upstairs. If you own the place I would suggest you should be investigating why. If not, your landlord should be (though I could never get mine to). I would be worried about rotting structural stuff.

Salt..slugs hate salt..pour it everywhere.
Tripp_Loso@reddit
Bonus - the salt circle will also keep the demons at bay.

But then just have salt all about me room? I feel like this is a war against me and these fucking slugs. Do i just put the salt down the skirting?

Sounds like a nightmare.
Got some tips that helped us
Seal the gaps in your skirting board. Slugs can squeeze through tiny spaces, so use silicone sealant or something similar to block their entry points.
Copper tape works great—slugs get a mild electric shock when they try to cross it. You can stick it along the base of your walls or wherever they’re getting in.
You can try sprinkling salt where they’re coming in (but be careful not to overdo it since it can damage floors). Diatomaceous earth or coffee grounds work too, as slugs hate crawling over them.
Beer traps are a classic. Just leave a shallow dish of beer near where they enter, and they’ll crawl in and drown.
Try to keep the area dry. Slugs love moisture, so using a dehumidifier might help keep them away.
Clear up any clutter where they could be hiding and make sure to wipe down their trails, as they might follow them back into the room.

Super helpful this. I’ll give it a bash. Nothing is worse than these little fuckers in my room.
Ok-Librarian-7809@reddit
Also just a tip, avoid pouring salt directly on them… they can explode and leave slime and mucus everywhere, which other slugs can use as a path, a “salt ring” or border is still a good option tho as annoying as it is.
Excellent_Dress7815@reddit (OP)
That’s disgusting. So should i put it as close to the skirting as possible or leave an inch just so they sniff it out.

I once baby sat for a buddy years ago in late autumn and went to see what his dog was whinging at (yard dog) in the back yard because I'd only fed him 1 hour ago so he shoulda been fine, when I switched the yard light on I got the worse sight of my life, hundreds of full grown slugs all over the patio and patio doors and about 20 or so writhing around in the dogs food bowl in a huge slime ball... I now have a healthy disdain for those little bastards and yes I salted them all and boy what a show... Like the ending to gremlins movie

As a general warning to people with dogs, slugs and snails can carry lungworm. This parasitic can be left on toys and in water bowls etc and then picked up by the dog later.
Ok-Librarian-7809@reddit
Sorry for grossing you out, depends how far in you want them to come :)
Yeah I would definitely go as close as, sealing up gaps would be a good idea with silicon but if there’s a lot of slugs it might be worth checking out what’s going on especially as your on the second floor, it’s probably nothing but peace of mind is good just incase there is a lot of them hiding somewhere underneath floorboards etc.

Don’t try beer trap, it will attract me.
kwakimaki@reddit
White vinegar also works. Stinks, but you can get scented stuff from amazon.

Salt works wonders They also love lager and will drown in it

TIL I am a slug
foolserrand77@reddit
They prefer bitter, dad had an allotment and used to set ale traps in spring and again every 3 months
dinkidoo7693@reddit
I can believe that too,
just remember from working in a restaurant, the used lagerglasses that didn't get collected in from outside always had slugs or wasps in them...
mydadsohard@reddit
I wonder if you died would they start eating you ? lol

lol nature bats last

Stop taking lettuces to bed?
Ok-Librarian-7809@reddit
Also as an added tip run a dehumidifier in the room, they need moisture so making it more dry will detract them, again if it’s your bedroom possibly a buildup of condensation with you breathing will make it more moist in the air. So dehumidifier for some prevention
