how do i get started modifying my car?

I just bought a 2007 pontiac grand prix (not supercharged) and want to add some basic modifications that will help with performance. i’ve heard a lot about tuning chips and cold air intakes but heard most are scams and not worth it. where should i start first?

The sky is the limit with that car. If I remember correctly, I had a friend who had a GSX.(not the same car )GM took a stock Grand Prix took the transfer case out of an Aztec added a rear axle and made it all wheel drive and dropped in a 6.2 L Corvette engine. They widen the fender, flares to put the wider tires on that could handle the horsepower. my friend had the GSX, which was a supercharged V6. I told him he should do that conversion. Just leave the supercharge V6 in it. Then he would have an all-wheel-drive sleeper .

Learn how to do your maintenance on this car, it's probably not long for this world, so don't try and speed up its demise.
mmaalex@reddit
Don't waste the time/money. Any upgrades you do on that car will make negligible performance improvements, and devalue the car.
Learn to do basic maintainence and turn a wrench that way. Once you're proficient, figure out what you want that has actual performance parts available and is worth upgrading.

I would wait until you have two cars. Have a car that goes no further under the hood than an intake, exhaust and a tune. I have wound up so many times with 3 damn project cars and none running/drivable
That said, if you wanna say "fuck off dude on Reddit. I'm bout that Grand Prix life!" I can help. First off, how crazy are you trying to get? That platform isnt i deal for max power. If youre looking for a fun cruiser that's fine but I wouldn't expect more than 325 hp in that to be useful without some serious driveline modification. I know a guy who had to build his trans get a torque converter and get beefier axles and it blew up anyway. I think he had an 04 GT. He was in it for like 25 grand in the end. So pick where you wanna be at on the sane-lunatic spectrum there
After the basic suspension, and breathing mods (intake and exhaust) and you have a daily and you still wanna mod that specific car, you will want to explore forced induction. Those Supercharged Series III engines (L32) crank, but you have an NA L26. I believe to swap over everything to get an L32 would be either a donor supercharged engine or all the parts necessary to do what GP guys call a "top swap". The cool thing here is that in the end, it will actually be faster than an OE supercharged engine because you are keeping the higher compression pistons. That will give you about 275 hp and with a tune and a pulley kit probably about 350
If that isn't your style, ZZP has a centrifugal supercharger kit (think belt mounted turbo) that were pretty good, and those were good for about 310 hp
Either way, you may want to get the HD transmission out of a supercharged car for reliability purposes, particularly if you are going above 300 hp
This section is going to be the spicy stuff. An Intercooler will reduce intake air temps and allow for a denser charge. So add about 100 hp to those boosted numbers earlier. Not enough? Add an E 85 kit (much higher octane than 91/93 premium gas for about 40 more. Much more than that, though, and you will have to start bottom end work as forged internals would be necessary and a cam would be ideal. But if you wanna go crazy, do it. The Series III heads breathe pretty well, but if you're going all out, port and polish the heads with bigger valves and stronger springs. If youre going balls out, top swap with new internals and throw the centrifugal charger with an intercooler on it. Thats good for 700+HP, but you will need a beefier torque converter and a fully built trans. Basically, the only thing past that is nitrous amd I don't know how those engines like the juice
Modifying a car can be as simple or as complex as you make it. From the most basic wheels/tires and suspension upgrades to a street legal race car, almost anything is possible. My biggest piece of advice would be to sit down and make a plan for exactly what you want to do so you are not replacing parts you already spent money on upgrading. For example, if you are going to "top swap" your GP, you shouldn't go and get a set of upgraded coil packs for your NA motor as you will be replacing them down the line with the Supercharged parts anyway. That plan will save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Other than that, do what you want and try to learn how to do what you can by yourself. A significant portion of building a car is labor, so help yourself out wherever you can and save money there, too. That being said, know when you need to turn it over to a professional. The only other things to remember are don't make your car the sole focus in life and have fun. If you need help, reach out here cuz there a million bored mechanics that use this site daily. Good luck

It's not exactly a high performance platform to start out with but if you like the car and it's in good condition but nice tires on it. Get some good continentals or something.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
What's broken on it now? As you fix that, replace them with good parts.
Next: what is your end goal?
As far as performance/dollar, tires and performance driving lessons are what's going to have the most bang for your buck.
However, if you show up in your high school parking lot, nobody will care about your tires and driving lessons. A cat-back exhaust, a cone filter, and some lower springs will turn twice as many heads while giving you a fourth of the performance boost.

Just drive it and save the money to put towards a better car.
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
i think that’s what i’m ultimately concluding towards
ameslay1211@reddit
This is exactly right. You need to focus on keeping this car running in the cheapest way possible. If you want to do modifications. The way you save up to buy something that lots of people mod. Something like a Honda Civic or Mazda Miata. Maybe consider something like a 1995 BMW 328. Dont waste money modifying a car that no one wants to modify.
MaliciousMilk@reddit
Start with fixing the issues, but buy upgraded parts as you go. ZZP makes a plethora of parts for the 3800 platform and has many helpful guides and videos.
ApprehensiveEcho9253@reddit
Tbh that's really not a platform worth modifying. Keep that as a daily and save up for a better platform with a bigger aftermarket
Restomodded@reddit
I want to be honest with you.. I like the gxp grand prix but its definitely not worth your money and time modifying.. they dont have a strong value and its a front wheel drive platform. If you wanted to modify it id buy a used supercharger or build a turbo kit and do something that would actually improve horsepower. Not much else besides building the engine is going to make any difference
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
i appreciate the honesty, but honestly it’s my first car and wanna have fun with it but if it’s not worth it than i probably wont
Restomodded@reddit
Well also keep in mind if its your only car modding it to make it faster can have issues in reliability. The cheapest thing you can do is get a used supercharger that fits it since they had supercharged models. Id say it would probably be less than buying a cold air intake and actually give you performance. Still its good to do a little research and see what else you would need for it like a different belt, you can change the supercharger pulley size, gaskets etc.
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
yeah for sure, i was thinking about trying to find a used supercharger to slap on to it but i gotta figure out what other parts to buy for it along with the supercharger
Restomodded@reddit
Ive never personally done it to give you an exact guide but i found a decent article on it. Its worth giving it a look if its something you want to do. I think thats cool you want to modify your car. That mindset got me into becoming a mechanic. The first got I got to modify was an Audi tt.

rudbri93@reddit
start with stuff like performance brakes and tires, replace your air filter, do some maintenance stuff that helps you get your feet wet.
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
okay, thank you a lot! it’s currently having an overheating issue so i ordered parts to fix that but just really like the thought of adding modifications and working on it. but the car does have 212k miles so is it even worth trying to make it better or should i save up and use it as a daily and find a better car?
XtraChrisP@reddit
I personally wouldn't sink too much into a car with over 200k on it.
rudbri93@reddit
itll be good to do basic things an learn with, but you will come to its limits quickly. learn to research chassis and what othere people have done with em. start out with basics.
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
alright, yeah thank you alot man, i think i just gotta be patient and stuff but i appreciate it!
rudbri93@reddit
theres plenty to learn, dont worry, and basic maintenance teaches you more than youd think.
Onlyunsernameleft@reddit
With that much mileage and such little aftermarket available, I'd do three things:
-Wheels and tires. Go for a wider offset that fits and put some good summer or high performance all seasons on it.
-good brakes. You can go faster for longer if you don't need as much room to brake.
-Weight reduction. Assuming you don't care how it looks, rip out all the extra stuff you can. Back seat? Out. Door panels and sound deadening? Out. Headliner and carpeting? All out.
Why do you think cars with 90hp can keep up with trucks that have upwards of 500hp? All weight, baby. Make a slow car fast.
Doing actually modifications to the engine will be counterproductive. Will likely decrease efficiency like with a 'cold air intake' and the added strain on an older engine will cause seals/bearings/etc to wear out. Like if you supercharge that thing you better make sure you do what's called a 'Stage 0.' Basically all the maintenance and potentially weak components get serviced or replaced prior to doin the fun stuff.
Dependent_Disaster40@reddit
It’s somewhat old to be a dependable daily driver. And I’d much prefer something like a Civic if I’m modifying a FWD!
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
yeah fair enough😂
Simplejames16@reddit
Crash it into a brick wall
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
or a tree
patterson489@reddit
The first step is to ask yourself what exactly is the car lacking. Acceleration from a stop? Acceleration while already at highway speeds? Takes too long to brake? Have to slow down too much before turns?
DishRelative5853@reddit
Do it like we did in the seventies: Cragar mags, wide tires, bigger speakers, and pin stripes.
AbruptMango@reddit
What performance does your car lack?
Itzrizzy@reddit (OP)
not 100% sure yet, parts are coming in here soon so i can fix the overheating but i’d love to increase acceleration
