Anyone else not want to go anywhere anymore where parking might be a problem?

I'm getting old. Crowds, nope. Loud, nope. Late, Nope. Expensive, nope.
PetSoundsSucks@reddit
I’ll one up you on that. I make restaurant decisions based on the number of right hand turns I can make to get there and back.
NordlandLapp@reddit
What's wrong with pet sounds?
Proof_Fix1437@reddit
Unprotected lefts can be just fine but at a light? Absolutely not.
theodoreposervelt@reddit
Similarly, I won’t go to any business that it’s a pain in the ass to get out of the parking lot. Oh the only opening is on a crazy busy road right next to an intersection where you have to wait 10+ minutes for an opening? There are other easier to get to/get out of stores to go to.
imogen1983@reddit
I only go to stores at opening because I’m not about to deal with people and traffic. If it’s past 10am on a weekend, it’s already too late.
SqueakyTieks@reddit
Same here. Now that I’m incapable of sleeping in on weekends I’ll knock out any errands by 9:30am and get home before it gets stupid out. I love grocery shopping at 8am on a Sunday.
UnwillingHummingbird@reddit
I am to the point where I will take a completely different path around town to get to a destination than how I get home again, based solely on how easy the turns are to make. I don't care if it's a few minutes longer, I don't want to have to make a left at a busy intersection.
FletchMom@reddit
It baffles my 13yo that when I “go to town” for errands I will only go to the places on the right, and will only make one left turn to come home, and turn right into those stores. It kills him I won’t immediately go to Academy - because it’s on the left. It’s always the last stop. I thought I was the only one like this 😂
InvestigatorOk7988@reddit
When i have a multiple stop errand day, i plan my route to maximize right turns.
vishy_swaz@reddit
That’s how my wife is lol
tjeepdrv2@reddit
Haha, I always tell my girlfriend that anyone making a left hand turn has made a wrong decision at some point to end up where they are.
newsflashjackass@reddit
TFW you zoom out and realize the whole planet is child-proofed for right-handers. Such "wrong decisions" are baked-in to the design.
In the U.S. stop lights mean "stop unless you're turning right"; just guess how U.S. news covers presidential elections.
HighOnGoofballs@reddit
I moved to a tiny island so I don’t need to drive

Y’all are killing me 😂
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
When I first got my drivers license I was only allowed to go places I could get to with right hand turns 😆 I thought it was lame then but now I get it
PHI41-NE33@reddit
wouldn't you have to make left turns to come back?
Dracono@reddit
FWIW, three right turns is a left.
TaylorBitMe@reddit
Not everywhere. You can get REALLY lost playing that game.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Where I lived was very much a grid so I guess I could make like a complete square to come home. But mostly I just let my mom say the rules then did what I wanted. She lacks logic.
Stompedyourhousewith@reddit
Is it on the other side of the freeway and I have to use the u turn under the freeway to get there? Not going there
tafbee@reddit
My other half does this, too. We also have a freeway nearby and he doesn’t like to “cross the freeway.” 🤣
Newyew22@reddit
Semi-related, wherever I go, I either need to be headed for home by 3pm or spending the night; Daddy doesn’t do rush hour or driving at night.

Daddy, chill

KolonelKernel@reddit
Omg I thought I was the only one!!!
J_Worldpeace@reddit
3??? You mean you go places and don’t get home in time for naps? That must be a Saturday
Maleficent_Drop_2429@reddit
Ride a Bicycle you can go to more places - maneuver better in places like that & you don't have to pay for parking.
StatementLazy1797@reddit
You forgot traffic, nope.
cb27ded@reddit
Its why I tend to run my errands at 7am on the weekends. Or as soon as the place opens. Annoys me when some places don't open til 11am or Noon.
jeffreywilfong@reddit
Running errands early morning before work is like a cheat code for life.
jeffreywilfong@reddit
Not just parking, but people in general. Fuck concerts in particular.
unomasme@reddit
I would seriously love to live in a place where I don’t need to own a car.
Phyzzx@reddit
This is the dream fr. I got kicked out of the city (expensive rent) a decade ago and finally there's a bar within walking distance!
pixelpheasant@reddit
Moved to a little town with a pub/restaurant in town ... no debates about who needs to be the DD that way.
Phyzzx@reddit
I still needed to live close enough by the damn city to still goto work everyday at the time. sigh
pixelpheasant@reddit
Oof. Yeah that's a tough paradigm
zoominzacks@reddit
I know a dude doing that, haven’t checked in with him in awhile though. Was living just outside Minneapolis. Biked everywhere year round, for everything else it was Uber or public transit. At the time his stated goal was to never get his drivers license
Savingskitty@reddit
Biking year round in Minneapolis is some commitment.
thomfountain@reddit
Bike trails get plowed faster than a lot of roads here. Tons of winter bike commuters.
zoominzacks@reddit
He’s an interesting cat, when he said that’s what his goal was. I don’t remember anyone really questioning him, it was just “yeah, that sounds like something he would do”
He’s one of them “dangerous smart” types.
TheCuriosity@reddit
So liberating not being tied to a vehicle just to go somewhere.
imogen1983@reddit
I lived in SE Asia and a few places in Europe without a car, and can confirm it’s an amazing feeling. I did have to grocery shop several times a week, but I’d get 15-20K steps in a day without trying.
RocktoberBlood@reddit
There's a town near me called New Harmony, IN and it's a golf cart town. Everything is locally owned, so no McDonalds or Dollar Generals. It's basically an artists wet dream.
EastPlatform4348@reddit
I'm the complete opposite. I don't want to be around people. I don't want to ride on public transportation, don't want to go to crowded restaurants, etc. When we go out, I want to drive, go somewhere not crowded, be back to my house early, etc.
delibertine@reddit
I moved from Los Angeles to a place I don't need a car and it's amazing
HighOnGoofballs@reddit
I’m in Key West, walk or bike everywhere
traumalt@reddit
I've done similar, moved from Johannesburg to Netherlands haha.
Spats_McGee@reddit
I moved ~~from~~ within Los Angeles to a place I don't need a car and it's amazing
times_zero@reddit
Just adding my two cents here, but FWIW I felt the same way about 2-3 years ago, so after some time I got rid of my car via an online pickup, I cancelled my car issuance, and then I made the switch to being car-free here in Northern Cali. Obviously, it's still very car-centric here, but I've found at least in my case I live in a city with enough bike paths, and sidewalks where it's managed to use an ebike (along with a backup) as a local communicator for trips like groceries while still remaining self-reliant. Now, with that being said, I'm also single with no kids, so I understand why dropping car ownership is not necessarily ideal for most average folks for a variety of reasons as these are systematic issues after all. Either way, I figured I'd share my experience in hopes to show it can be possible, even in car-centric USA, to make dropping car ownership work depending on one's area/circumstances.
Plus, I thought I'd also share, because even if someone can't drop car ownership for whatever reason I'd still generally recommend an ebike (and/or conventional bike, trike, etc.) as a means to reduce car usage if nothing else.
rustbolts@reddit
Just moved to the EU with the intent of not needing a car. It’s so much less stressful. Is it lame when you see the train/tram pull away right when you get there? Yeah, but worst case it’s normally just at most a 10 minute wait for the next one.
mlgraves@reddit
I lived in Denver for 5 years and only had a car for one.
LoveYouNotYou@reddit
Nooooooope, you don't. NYC is not the dream babe. I love my city, but nooooooope, I need space.
justsomeyeti@reddit
New York and Los Angeles both sound like absolute hell to my country ass
LoveYouNotYou@reddit
Lmao... I know I know...And I cannot live in the country! We know our limits :-)
LTYUPLBYH02@reddit
That's my empty nest goal. Live in a cute bungalow near a walkable area with everything I need.

Same here. My dream is to live someplace where I never need to drive/ride in a car ever again.

PK-Baha@reddit
We literally pickup orders for groceries and anything when it's available.
Restaurants order pickup, no Uber eats bs.
Basically no need to go anywhere. Only place I go to is a quick run to sevs or Walgreens
westfailiciana@reddit
I live in the boonies, so no delivery at all. That's the woes of working commercial Nuclear power. Luckily, the plant I work at is in a little bougie town in Louisiana so we actually have a lot to offer for a little town.
Delivery is such a novelty for me, when I go somewhere I get all excited to see what's offered on all the new apps and shit. When I'm in a metro area and I can get Vietnamese or Indian food delivered, I think about how great it would be to live there and order whatever I wanted all the time. I haven't actually pulled the trigger on ordering door dash or uber eats, but one day I will!!
Echterspieler@reddit
Depends on your location. I'm a delivery driver part time and deliver out to middle of nowhere places all the time
MelpomeneAndCalliope@reddit
Must be St. Francisville!
citrus_sugar@reddit
You call it Sevs, too? 🥹
I’m the same, I stayed home so long the car battery I just bought 2 months ago died and I had to jump it and remember to at least just go to Sevs every few days.
Danimal_300zx@reddit
You don't work?
citrus_sugar@reddit
I work from home and honestly would probably welcome going to an office again.
ShireHorseRider@reddit
What’s sevs?
citrus_sugar@reddit
7-11 stores.
ShireHorseRider@reddit
Heck yeah!!! I’m gonna incorporate that one! I love it!! Thank you.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
My battery is currently dead and street cleaning day is coming up. Guess I have to jump it and I’m annoyed
PK-Baha@reddit
We have two cars and the second car is only getting use right now because my parents are up from Florida.
Even my sister was asking me today why we don't use it.
We don't go anywhere. It's the backup car just in case or if we need to split up for errands.
And yeah it's always been Sevs !! I'm right there with you.
the_noise_we_made@reddit
Sev's?
PK-Baha@reddit
7-11
the_noise_we_made@reddit
Thanks. I know of them but there isn't any around me.
ClownTown509@reddit
All my most important shit is at my house, why would I want to be anywhere else? It costs $100 just to step outside now, so fuck everything anyway.
Prestigious-Syrup836@reddit
There was a silent disco AND festival two blocks away with many cool people, we set up the projector on the balcony and watched Star Wars a new hope for 40 min then went to bed.

This is seriously how I knew my wife was the one for me.
We were out together and were going to go pick up her cousin. As we pull up, it is very clear this is a happening bar, with a crowd of people having fun with loud music and people dressed up and drunk.
My first thought was to try to psych myself up to go in and pretend to have fun when I notice my now-wife let out a big sigh of disappointment that we were at a happening bar.
We were meant to be (at home) together.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Love that for you both! Maybe if I ever leave my house someday I can also find my person. In the meantime my dog will suffice.
OddDragonfruit7993@reddit
I love traveling and camping, but I hate being around morons. Wife and I invested in nice, but inexpensive land in a couple beautiful places, so us our family and our friends have awesome places to camp. Some others in my family have done the same.
It's nice going to other places but not having to deal with people sometimes.
BadAtExisting@reddit
Yeah. If I have to encounter people at all I’m going to avoid it
LeastAd9721@reddit
I think that’s my issue too. Like I would go somewhere if nobody else was there either.
heaven_and_hell_80@reddit
If it's annoying or expensive I nope right out of the entire area!
Life-Improvised@reddit
Parking in front of my own apartment was haphazard at least 2 days a week with the damn street sweeping / fine ordinances.
Charger2950@reddit
I still don’t know how people can stand living in big crowded cities. Between the noise, the cost, the parking headaches, and everything else. I completely understand why violent crime is so high.
Life-Improvised@reddit
Well, it is more convenient to have access to all the amenities if you can tolerate all the nuisances.
constant--questions@reddit
At the last concert I went to the parking was so bad it was on the news. Spent over an hour getting in. The (big) concert before that was fine getting in but i spent 2+ hours waiting to leave the stacked parking
ef4@reddit
That's not age, that's being in a car-dependent place. Enough years of that will rot your brain and make you antisocial.
PuppyJakeKhakiCollar@reddit
Anymore? I never went anywhere if parking was a problem, lol. Parallel parking? Nope. Pay lots? Nope.
Actually I will parallel park now, so maybe I am going the other way, lol.

It’s a major deciding factor. Especially now where I’m living in socal and it’s currently 105 degrees at 4pm.
Obi1Kentucky@reddit
There’s a qdoba a block away from my house. I walk there a unhealthy amount because fuck traffic and parking.
Echterspieler@reddit
Nah I love being out and about. Crowds don't bother me. Parking far from the store and walking doesn't bother me either.

Tulip718@reddit
Thank you for making this post. I've never felt so seen.

TheCuriosity@reddit
I ditched the car, take Ubers or taxis. Much cheaper and less hassle.
DonutSimulatorForN64@reddit
On a plane out of LA right now, and yes. I'm looking forward to my flyover city that is easy to get around. Also it doesn't smell like effluent.
donkykongjr@reddit
My work built new offices we will be moving into in the next 2 years... there are 5 parking garages to choose from. This isn't a major city. Required parking in parking garages will be new. I'm scoping way in advance where we may be able to park.
Spiritual-Top4267@reddit
Totally... But parking (and everything that entails) kinda IS the problem.
Dry_Inspection_4583@reddit
I'm not going anywhere, parking or not.
typhoonicus@reddit
I stopped driving entirely and started biking everywhere. I can do this because I live in Portland, and I don’t always feel like biking but I do anyway and let me tell you, I haven’t thought about traffic or parking for years. I love it.
Brabblenator@reddit
Anyone else feel this way since your 20s?
LordsOfWestminster@reddit
If I am attending an event I’ll always check to see if there is some VIP parking available. Hate to wait in traffic especially when something is over.

huitzilopochtla@reddit
I have zero tolerance for parking fuckery.
Chanandler_Bong_01@reddit
Yes, me.
Depending on the event, I don't even care about parking being expensive. But it must also be easy to access and in close distance to the venue. If parking isn't abundant, I'm not going.

My husband for sure. He always takes into consideration parking lol

Costco parking lot. Peak anxiety.
We did an amusement park recently and though I prepared my senses for assault, it really wasn’t bad. I guess variables matter. For now, at least.
spc67u@reddit
“Prepared my senses for assault”
I like the saying. I too prepare when I have to go into a large crowd.
P-a-n-a-m-a-m-a@reddit
I avoid some crowds altogether. Sensory overload is real and apparently I’m becoming a bit of a curmudgeon in my old age…sorta.
clutzycook@reddit
My daughter decided to volunteer with her athletic team to hand out water for a 5k fundraiser/community event yesterday. I had to drive her to the meeting spot and I told her I'd meet her in the same spot when she was done. She wasn't done until 8:30, well past dark these days. When I got there, I had to stand around for about 5 minutes before she got to my location. But that was five minutes longer than I wanted to be there. The DJ was playing the music WAY too loud for me. I could smell the fog machine chemicals from half a block away, and there were way too many strobing lights (not epileptic, but I can imagine someone with that condition would have felt very overwhelmed there). I was glad to find my daughter and GTFO because that was the last place on earth I wanted to be. I found it odd because 20 years ago I probably would have loved that sort of thing. But at that point, I just wanted to get home and get into bed.
RydRychards@reddit
That seems to only be a problem if the obly mode of transport you have is a car. Since I started (e)biking everywhere my parking problems have vanished.
MiaLba@reddit
I seriously skipped class in college a couple times because I couldn’t find a parking spot anywhere on campus. Didn’t know what I was supposed to do.
Real_Sartre@reddit
No, that’s suburban talk and I don’t like to hear that
HouseOfMiro@reddit
Don't have to worry about parking if you don't go anywhere.
KellyAnn3106@reddit
I've stopped going to events unless I can buy a parking pass in advance. I've also stopped going to standing room only concerts. I'm getting old.
NegPrimer@reddit
Music sounds better on the album anyways...why bother going to a concert?
badger2000@reddit
Gotta hard disagree here. There's nothing quite like being in the pit (in my case now on the outer ring...too old to actually get in anymore) with a few hundred other fans. The cathartic feeling of a metal show is something else entirely and honestly, I've realized how much I missed it after having not gone for years while my kids were younger. Now they're old enough to be in the pit themselves.
badger2000@reddit
Funnily enough, I prefer GA/standing at concerts. In my case that usually means smallish metal shows (i.e. small venues not stadiums). I'll do traffic, people, etc...but it has to be for something I really want to do, not just for something to do (if that makes sense).
ofTHEbattle@reddit
Yeah in the off chance I go to a show or anything anymore I always opt for an additional parking pass. It really does depend on the event though. I used to go to a lot of Broadway stuff and the parking wasn't too bad, but we usually went on Wednesdays(my weekend at the time was Wednesday and Thursday) which REALLY helped when trying to park anywhere in downtown Detroit.
Sasselhoff@reddit
Whereas, I just went to a concert for the first time in a few years and am now determined to get out there and see a bunch more. Forgot how awesome they are...just wish they were a teeny bit less expensive.
That said, you wouldn't find me in a club to save my life these days, and I wasn't even what you'd call a clubber (save for the late 90s early 00s).

SaveusJebus@reddit
Yep. I'm perfectly happy just staying home 99% of the time.
hind3rm3@reddit
Had this experience in the spring, trying to get to a concert and couldn’t find parking anywhere. Eventually said fuck it and parked illegally right outside the venue. Concert was great, no parking ticket, got in the car and drove off.
Charger2950@reddit
Sometimes the possible $75 ticket is worth it. Hell, it’s gonna cost $40-$50 to park, anyway, if I can’t find street parking. Which you basically never can during huge events. Might as well just roll the dice.
Unusual_Mine2454@reddit
The parking is fine. How far I have to walk after said parking, however, will impact the decision.
zer04ll@reddit
Let us all agree, we dont go places anymore.
We watch reruns of good tv not this bad tv these days with the occasional exception and if you dont go out you can wear sweatpants with 0 shame.
We can wait for that movie to come to streaming because our friends are around the same age and are doing the same thing so no one is spoiling anything for anyone we are just waiting for it to hit Nexflix or what ever.
Pizza is getting "less cheap" but still worth the delivery on a Saturday night!

Covid really did behaviorally change the world for good. We all got used to being lazy and realizing how great it is. But at the same time, it’s not doing anything positive for us, but it feels so good though.

Charger2950@reddit
I was feeling so good and manic last Saturday that I was talking to all my friends and made plans to go to a crowded ass place DOWNTOWN, tomorrow. I seriously want to unalive myself for doing that. 🙃🤦🏻♂️ You’d would I would’ve learned my lesson to never make plans when I’m feeling great, because that’s only a fleeting moment, and then the day before comes around and I would rather gouge my eyes with sewing needles than go.
vishy_swaz@reddit
100%!
There is this really good taco place where I live called “Torchy’s”, but the parking situation is always shit (and they’re always packed anyways). So it ends up just being a stressful meal, and I don’t really vibe with that. So I stopped going altogether. DoorDash up charges for every item so I don’t do that either. Fuck DoorDash.

chao_sweetie@reddit
I look at Google to: see where parking is.,
how long it will take to get there by car, walking or bicycle,
photos of the place, food and the reviews (if any),
what times they are busy.
Get tired, then proceed to go back to sleep and pretend I didn't get a text or phone call (DND mode).
WolverineFun6472@reddit
The traffic, the reckless driving! I’d rather stay home.
Charger2950@reddit
Agreed, but I also think overly cautious and/or clueless driving/drivers that are in their own worlds is also an epidemic. Which kind of leads to the aggressive/reckless driving from people (rightfully) getting enraged when someone is in their own world and doing 30 in a 40 or 45. Like God damn…..MOVE! Just at least do the speed limit. Drivers that are simply in their own world (oblivious to absolutely everything) are at epidemic levels. I also don’t drive aggressively or stupidly, but it’s just very frustrating. I hate angry aggressive drivers and I hate clueless drivers. Stay in the middle, folks.
PoisonMind@reddit
The speed limit is a maximum, not a minimum, and for good reason. Speeding is the most common and most easily avoidable causes of traffic accidents. And speeding doesn't get you where you're going any faster anyway. It just lets you wait at red lights for a few extra seconds. Just leave early and calm TF down.
Charger2950@reddit
Listen, we’re all adults here. If you’re doing 30 in a 40, you’re the problem. A little common sense needs to be applied to speed limits. Plain and simple. That’s ridiculous slow, and you’re clogging up traffic and creating a major hazard. I’m talking about people that go ridiculously fast and slow.
PoisonMind@reddit
No, I'm a cyclist. I go about 20 mph on average. And you know what? Cars go 20 mph on average, too. Every single day, I get to experience the same phenomenon of some moron endangering my life (and his!) by making an aggressive and illegal overtake just so I can catch up to them at a red light 5 seconds later.
If you think endangering the lives of others for zero benefit even to yourself makes you a good driver, you are the problem.
Charger2950@reddit
You’re talking about something that has literally nothing to do with what I’m talking about. I can count on one hand the amount of cyclists I encounter in a year. There are almost none. And I’m not gonna do 20mph because you like riding a bike.
WolverineFun6472@reddit
People running red lights, riding your tail in the slow lane even going 5-10 miles over the limit, no use of signals, I’ve witnessed too many accidents and overturned cars in the freeway
Charger2950@reddit
Yup. It’s all infuriating.
BeeHarasser@reddit
100%. But if I am going to something where parking might be an issue, I will pay for parking. Concert and it's parking across the street for and extra $20? Take my money. I don't want to drive around, find a spot, put a pin it it, etc. Just let me park and be done. Im there for the music, let me enjoy it and not stress about anything else except being around people.

Parking has never been my issue. I like walking. I like parking far away from places. And if I find a close spot, that's great too. It's all the other things I don't like about leaving my home.

This is why I will Uber. Also a pass a not worry about booze buzz. I’m an easy drunk now a day…
FidgitForgotHisL-P@reddit
I used to happily go where ever and be content to park ten minutes walk away.
This weekend I did a click and collect for something and chose the next town over cause the shop there I knew I could park outside, the one in town I’d have to find a park, pay for it, wrangle the kids, deal with the complaining…

This is one of the things that makes me feel like such a hypocrite. I love supporting small businesses but I hate on street parking, so I rarely go.
Specific_Cod100@reddit
Living for 3 years in Manayunk, Philadelphia did this for me. Only street parking, so depending on when you leave, and when you head home, you might end up parking 4 blocks from your house.
Murdocs_Mistress@reddit
I am almost a complete hermit.
I only leave to go to the office (one day a week LOL) and hit up grocery store or maybe our local pot shop.
My daughter convinced me to go downtown the other day to check out a new shop and visit a favorite shop to say hi to the owners (we used to go in often and they asked about me when she showed up a few times alone).
It was Saturday and busy. The favorite shop is already a tight space with lots of cool stuff and it's a bit overwhelming to navigate. Add to this the amount of people coming in....I finally had to tell kiddo it was getting too much and had to get outside. I did chat a briefly with the owners and they were glad I was still alive (they suspected I died I guess?)
Responsible-Donut824@reddit
I dont go anywhere that requires me to drive.
Blueberry_Mancakes@reddit
I'm in Nashville and parking anywhere in the downtown urban core is at the very least a ripoff and more often than not a trap for predatory tow truck drivers, parking lot scammers, or scumbag parking companies who mail you bullshit violations and send you to collections if you don't pay. If you manage to dodge all of that you still might have your shit broken into.
I leave all that for the tourists and stick to the suburbs.
MeatWaterHorizons@reddit
I just don't go anywhere lol. im old, shits too expensive, i hate people, etc etc

And to add, on top of all of it, the safety factor. Big crowds make me a bit panicky/hyper alert now. Always know the exits and have a plan in case violence, fire, or a crowd crush breaks out.

Nearby parking is nice but if there is none, I don't mind
Of course I have a disabled parking card but those spots are occupied more often than you'd think. And not always by disabled people.
I have an EV and EV parking/charging spaces are also closer to stores and venues. But spots fill up fast too and not always with ev's
qzdotiovp@reddit
Not really. I have become much less focused on car problems in the last five years, and I like it. I still enjoy driving and working on cars, but I try to get places without a car more often now.
thatotherguy57@reddit
I try to go out when places open to avoid crowds (grocery shopping at 6am on Sunday morning in particular). If I have to go later in the day, I park in the back so I have an easier time finding my car when I leave.
NegPrimer@reddit
Most my local grocery stores are pretty empty by about 9 pm, so I usually go then.

I went to a local concert venue recently where you sit in grass and watch the stage while sitting down. The venue controlled parking in the entire area, including shopping centers, and charged $25 no matter where you went. Then, during the headliner, everyone stood up, so you couldn't even chill on the grass anymore.
I can't imagine going back there again.

Wasting-tim3@reddit
Oh damn. I grew up in an area like this. Very small, rural. And you want to know what I miss about it? The stars.
Cities you barely see stars. I take my kids the the observatory to learn about space because they can’t just look up and see anything. Too much light pollution.
Not going to lie OP. I’m jealous. The bummer is my job doesn’t exist in rural places, I’m kinda stuck until I retire.
Fishboy9123@reddit (OP)
Yea, we can lay in the road in front of my house and count shooting stars on clear nights.
Wasting-tim3@reddit
Thank you for sharing. This reminded me to take my kids camping more, and get out of our bubble.
Sure, we have tons of entertainment here, but my favorite childhood memories are simple things like looking at the stars or enjoying the time of day when the shadows get long. I need to remember to share that with my kids. It’s just something they aren’t exposed to where I live.
There is tremendous benefit in slowing down and enjoying the simple things in life.

spc67u@reddit
For me it’s the known vs unknown. If it’s busy parking but I’ve been there before then I’m okay with it. Busy parking when on vacation though really stresses me out. For example I went to Santa Cruz for memorial weekend and the traffic was so awful we parked a couple of miles from the boardwalk after sitting in traffic for 30+ minutes. It was almost not even worth it to go to the boardwalk, but I promised the kids so I dealt with the awful situation

Absolutely. I love all the restaurants on Convoy Street in San Diego, but the parking (really most places) sucks. I swear during development the city is like, 200 capacity? 10 parking spots will do.
jkrobinson1979@reddit
You realize most cities already have around 10 parking spaces for every car? We have way too much land wasted for parking and it’s a large reason housing is so much more expensive in cities.
bsylent@reddit
Yeah I'm so bad it's costing me money, I'll consider going to the store, think about the traffic, the parking, etc, then just open instacart/amazon/doordash and have what I need brought to me

OMG, 100%. I’m a huge fan of professional wrestling. This year Wrestlemania is as held about 45 minutes from my house. When it was announced I was SO HYPED! But when it came to buy tickets the thought of having to drive all the way down there, park a mile from the stadium, and the INTERMINABLE wait to get out of the parking lot after the show stopped me from buying tickets.
If there will be any sort of hassle or delay related to attending an event, I will happily just stay home.

Most of my family living in the suburbs of any age won’t go anywhere if it doesn’t involve an open massive parking with free parking.
aricberg@reddit
I used to live and work in my city’s downtown. I took it for granted because I could walk to any restaurant, theater, brewery, or event going on at a moment’s notice. It was great. Now that I neither work or live there, I absolutely despise going there because the parking situation. There’s 2 parking decks which are always half taken up with permit-only parking. The other spots are always taken. And in the last year or so, they’ve taken up even more of the “public” spots for permit-only parking…and they’re always empty! I hate it. I just avoid going anymore.

I'm introverted enough with limited time and things I want do. Going to where crowded public areas just sounds tiresome. Parking, even driving to areas that are going to be congested only amplify that feeling. Often these places are just built around consumerism, which is not interesting.
In the states I have zero desire to go out to eat. Waiting, questionable food, loud environments, and push service looking to eject you to open to the next wallet walking in the door. Bad enough I dread prices, where the only thing certain is prices are high and not including a tip in the menu prices. Really why deal with that when I can and do cook a better meal, have enjoyed the moment more and be done onto the next thing.
At this point the only thing I enjoy when going out is out secluded areas.
lynxpoint@reddit
I don’t have a car (live in a big city), so that’s never been a factor. But I certainly want to avoid large crowds more than ever before!

Yeah, I've started feeling like that sometimes. I also just bought a new car last year, and since then I've been especially weary of places where parking might be a problem, especially if other cars might come really close and ding my car.
There's a concert venue in my area, and there's a mass transit light rail train that has a stop right next to that venue. If I go see a concert there, usually I take the light rail train so I don't have to worry about parking. Cool_Dark_Place@reddit
I think Chick-fil-A is screwing up traffic everywhere. It didn't used to be this bad, but I dunno, something weird happened during the pandemic, every restaurant started making chicken sandwiches...and then... Chick-fil-A just freaking exploded! They're now in the process of tearing down and rebuilding my local one just so they can redo the traffic pattern, as the lunch rush was literally jamming up traffic at that intersection for half a mile.
_R_A_@reddit
Seriously... I moved to Virginia right before the pandemic and I don't get the obsession. The one in my town is getting moved across the street for more access but it's going to royally screw up the traffic there. At least where it is now it only affects the shopping center it's in, not the whole main road.

Hypatia76@reddit
Me me me a thousand percent me. I have no idea where this parking anxiety came from. I've always had a shitty sense of direction, so some of it is just knowing that if I'm driving around looking for parking I'm also going to have to figure out how to get to where I'm actually going from the parking spot.
Some of it is just that parking in any of the areas where the cool stuff is happening has gotten obscenely expensive.

I'm not doing parking decks, busses, parallel parking, parking on x side of x street between the hours of x and x, none of that. If I can walk there, take the train and walk a few blocks or drive and easily park there you won't see me.
123FakeStreetAnytown@reddit
If parking’s not free, you won’t see me!
TheHockeyGeek@reddit
If parking is gonna be difficult and a need to fight for a spot… I’ll pass. I actually even chose my work hours for ease of parking.
Imnotonthelist@reddit
The other day I tried going to a restaurant I’d never been to before for lunch. It’s on the corner of a very busy intersection and I didn’t know if there was a lot or just street parking. I pulled into what I thought was the lot, but it was just the back of the building with dumpsters and No Parking signs. Instead of making an impossible left turn, I made a right and went home lmao

I like to park…my ass on the couch in my basement.

Omg yes that’s where I am right now

I used to be an extreme extrovert and then 2020 hit and I realized that I’m actually an introvert.
Holmes221bBSt@reddit
Street parking, nope. $20 parking garage, nope. I’ll just get Little Cesar’s and stop and get a 6 pack at Total Wine. I’m good
RoxyLA95@reddit
I live in LA and I’m used to parking being a problem. When I go out, I worry more about being tired for the next week.
BitbyLite@reddit
for sure, and i try to sleep by 8:30
johngalt504@reddit
Yeah I don't. I also want to eat dinner earlier if we go out so we don't have to wait to be seated.
Chelseus@reddit
I’ve always had a lot of anxiety about parking, especially downtown. So yeah, I avoid it if at all possible!
LindsayDuck@reddit
You were right in the first half
Remote_Independent50@reddit
I live in a 10k+ town. Nothing crazy. Traffic/parking is never a real issue.
When I go to the bug city, there's nothing I like more than parking close to the action. And skating around. Was just in Venice. Skating up and down the strip was so fun. Same in Vegas. Same in SF. You can cover a lot of ground.
DJMagicHandz@reddit
I want to go places but people drive like they're participating in a high speed chase, calm down clapped out '99 Nissan Sentra you're not Keanu Reeves.
RoomUsed1803@reddit
Or if there is going to be a wait/long lines (except for Disney/Universal 😂).
I hate grocery shopping and if I can get my crap together for the week I will order pickup/delivery groceries.
Hot_Razzmatazz316@reddit
I just don't want to pay for parking if I can avoid it. But I also don't want to walk six blocks to find a free parking spot.
I also don't really want to go anywhere because the cost of things just depresses me. I really haven't gone out much at all since I lost my job last December, even to go shop for household necessities. But I had to go to the hardware store the other day (big chain store) and I was shocked at the price of screws compared to the price of 2x4's. I just wanted some 1 in drywall screws, and they were charging like $15 for the smallest one. I used to be able to buy a giant box for that price.
I've noticed that for other products, too. I hate going out and spending $100, and only having like 8 things in my cart (none of which are big ticket items).
intransit412@reddit
When I am less able to get around in my 70s I’m not going to look back and think “I should have stayed home more, parking was hard” so I try not to.
abort_retry_flail@reddit
In your 70s regret is more about the time you spend with the people you love than the shows/bars you went to.
sodastraw@reddit
My dinner requirements are reservations and a valet.
gwinnsolent@reddit
Yup. Before I agree to anything, I always ask about the parking situation.
ColbyAndrew@reddit
Always.
SlapHappyDude@reddit
Anymore? I've been complaining about parking forever
therealpopkiller@reddit
No. I refuse to give in to fuddy duddyism. Except loud restaurants and bars but that’s mainly bc I can’t hear anyone, not bc the noise itself is annoying
iSkiLoneTree@reddit
I have generally become much more of a homebody or go to friends' places for entertainment. However, I don't really worry about parking. If I'm going to a sporting event or concert, I use public transportation or Uber - or a combo of both. I do this becuase I'm A) too cheap to pay venue parking prices, B) get too frustrated at the congestion of trying to leave the venue at the same time as everyone, and/or C) hate trying to find parking close to a venue. I just plan ahead and plan/expect for the time it takes before and after. A 1/2 mile walk after a show can be relaxing and a good way to wind down if you're planning on it and not anxious about your timeline.
malledtodeath@reddit
No because I will walk pretty far to not have to hassle with being close.
MelodicPaint8924@reddit
Parking has gotten so bad in my area that parking far away doesn't even help. There are people circling and waiting back there, too.
malledtodeath@reddit
If that’s the case and I actually want to go, I’ll park somewhere closer than my house and ride share. I ride my bike a lot too.
randomboorishbuffoon@reddit
Hell no. I walk 10-12 miles a day at work, parking location doesn't matter.
Al-ex-Bee@reddit
My biggest sense of pride is knowing the best place to park at the world’s largest mall (supposedly)
garaks_tailor@reddit
When I go to Walmart I drive 25min instead of 10min to get to the really large never crowded store with 3 entrances, lots of parking, no traffic, and nothing behind locked cabinets
ASingleThreadofGold@reddit
I purposefully chose my home based on its proximity to the city. I take my bike a lot when i don't want to deal with parking. Otherwise I'll lyft.
strix_nebul0sa@reddit
Yes. In the past six months, I can count a few times where I have not attended something based on perceived parking difficulty level.
I will bike to avoid problematic parking, but unless there's super-secure bike locking, or a bike valet...nope. Fortunately, a few of my favourite local places have really solid bike parking.
I'm getting fussy about parking multiple modes of conveyance though!
BoredAccountant@reddit
Before I met my partner, if I went somewhere and parking was an issue, like insufficient or valet only, I would just leave. I didn't mind paying for parking so long as I knew I'd have a spot. I detest places that have free for all parking and don't know when they're full, to the point I will go out of my way to note infractions to report to the Fire Marshal (easiest way to get a public venue shit down).
Maudib1962@reddit
Went to the store yesterday for something I needed. Went to pay and it was a huge lineup.
My time is worth more to me than this trinket so put it on the closest shelf and walked out.
Even when I go out, I don't accomplish what I want out there.
AdQuirky1318@reddit
I will no longer drive on a highway unless it’s an emergency. City streets only lol.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
I have always hated going places where parking is a problem. Since my early 20s, I've gone out when there are fewer people and/or parked far out rather than try for a closer spot. It's not worth the stress.

I avoid driving at all costs. I usually bike, walk, or take the subway. For me, biking is usually the fastest mode of transportation

I live in a place where parking is a problem and I don't drive anywhere after 6pm if possible
Tre_Fo_Eye_Sore@reddit
I’m staying at the house so I can get my money’s worth. It takes a LOT of not going anyfucking where for me to feel like I’m getting my $1200/mo worth. That couch hasn’t been in danger of floating away in a few years! I just don’t have the energy and disposable income that I used to and I’m okay with that. The lights are on, there’s food in the fridge, and the rent is payed.
Anaxamenes@reddit
I love walking to places in my neighborhood. I hate looking for parking, but I will pay for a pay lot if I’m doing something really fun.
PorgCT@reddit
A major reason why I don’t go to as many sporting events that I once did was due to the cost of parking.
FraggleGoddess@reddit
Parking in my street got really bad in the last month or so, resulting in anxiety when I have to go anywhere. My work hours changed too, and I've little chance of a space anywhere near home. The surrounding streets are too narrow or double yellows.
I don't mind a short walk but my partner has a disability (doesn't have a blue badge) and feral brats have been damaging cars in this town, so I hate this :-(
MelodicPaint8924@reddit
I'm sorry. That sucks. My husband has to park on the street. His side mirror got broken off twice in the same month. People who damage cars really frustrate me.
FraggleGoddess@reddit
I always push my wing mirror in, though it probably won't do much good if anyone got close enough to hit.
Some eejit just didn't stop the other week, roared along my street and straight into the side of the car innocently travelling across the T-junction!
R1pp3R23@reddit
Always and often.
oskich@reddit
Nah, more often I avoid my car and use my bike to go shopping instead. Driving is tiring and unnecessarily if you're not buying or transporting something big and bulky.
bigbossfearless@reddit
I just don't wanna deal with the driving to anything downtown or across the bay or where the parking is shit or anything man. My home is comfy. All my stuff is there. It's where I fuck.
Why would I leave for anything that wasn't awesome?
TransportationOk657@reddit
That's me too! We may have a lot in common. You wanna come over and hang out? ....
... On second thought, I don't really like meeting new people anymore; about as much as finding a parking spot or fighting crowds 😬
YoohooCthulhu@reddit
I live in a city partially to avoid this.
Fedrusion@reddit
I don't want to go anywhere that parking is required, it's worse if markings a problem.
Smurfblossom@reddit
I have always been the kind of person that will just leave if I show up somewhere and the parking is too hard. I don't mind having to pay for parking, but I do mind events that have no appropriate parking plan.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Nope. Being home is all the excitement I can afford or tolerate.
MelodicPaint8924@reddit
I live in a high population area. Parking is a nightmare. I take the city bus when I can and avoid it altogether. It doesn't work for Coatco trips, though.
