How often do you guys have a TIRE blowout??

I've been meaning to ask this. I see so many tire corpses along my commute to work. Seems like there are new ones everyday.

2 months if driving. Sadly no blowouts but caught 3 trailers with flats on em due to nails. One of which somehow had a massive ass bolt lodged in it when i pulled it from the dock to slide my tandems

Once a month when I was doing drop and hook at a mega.
None at all now that I'm doing 95% live load and send pics of my tires to the fleet manager every day.

Had lots, once 2 separate in 1 day. I was with a mega and the indifference by many of the drivers to doing a pretrip, or writing up a problem was ridiculous. I once picked up a preloaded that I had to get 4 tires replaced before it could move.

Been driving a little under 2 years. My company uses cheap recaps on their trailers. Had two on Tuesday. I’ve worked there for a little under a year and have had 6 or 7. All trailer tires. They try using the BS excuse of of the heat makes them blow or they try to blame me. Nah I check the psi and the tread on every one of them when I pick the trailers up.
Caught a flat on a drive tire once after I ran over an absolute unit of a nail.

It sounds like a bad company. =/

5k trucks iirc. Idk if it’s just our account that cheaps out on them or all of them
Kkalemauser@reddit
My company runs retreads. 1-2 a month.
LTL drop and hook. 90 days above 110 degrees in AZ.
ultralight_ultradumb@reddit
A few times. Trailers that sit for a long time under the hot sun tend to do that.
papisilla@reddit
Depends. Haven't had any so far but a coworker had like 5 blow out in 2 months
scottiethegoonie@reddit
I've had 2 in the last year. One was a trailer tire that blew up (the kind that you're seeing on the freeway). The other was my steer tire (the kind that will blow up the truck).
No rhyme or reason. Just happens.

I can't imagine my heart not exploding with that drive tire. Glad you managed it.
As far as time on the road goes, I completely understand and agree. You see a lot more crazy on the roads too.
Frankie42083@reddit
I have had about 2 a year But some tires look like shit will be fine some recaps that are 6 mos old blow the hell up

Drove for 3 companies before being an O/O.
Company 1 bought all virgin tires. Never had a blowout, was there 1 year and did about 50,000 miles.
Company 2 would buy virgin tires, recap once, then buy virgin again. Never had a blowout, was there 1.5 years, and did about 100,000 miles.
Company 3 would run whatever they could find, and recapped tires that clearly should've been trashed long ago. 3 blowouts, was there 1 year, and did about 75,000 miles. Oldest core that blewout was 23 years old. Newest core that blewout was 14 years old.

Sounds like, aside from pretrip, a lot of responsibility falls on the company and how much preventative maintenance they put into their trucks/trailers.
Jumpy-Tale2697@reddit
Yesterday… no shit. Had one yesterday
Changed it in 93 mins
Grungyshawn@reddit (OP)
Sorry that happened to ya. Seems like a pain in the ass to fix.
International-Sky16@reddit
Ive only been driving for 6 months and already have 2. Am I doing something wrong? lol
K1d-ego@reddit
A lot of those tire chunks are the tread from recapped tires. Those tend to not last as long as fresh ones. Large carriers like Schneider use nothing but retreads so they’re always blowing out on the side of the road. You can lose a tread and not notice it until you park though. Sometimes a tire will throw the tread and stay inflated.
bloodsoed@reddit
It all depends. The last two blowouts I had was due to shitty recaps on the trailer while down in Arizona.
The7thZwei@reddit
2 months in driving, I had a blowout sitting at a red light. Trailer tires looked fine, guess they weren't.
Pappy181181@reddit
Had one on Tuesday. Talked to a tire tech last summer when I was down for another tire failure and asked if he thought tire quality was lower since covid, he said he is constantly replacing tires more now than ever.
Haulin680@reddit
It’s sporadic for me but a few factors will affect that, such as if you have recaps, weather, city or highway driving and where you load and unload. I haul lumber and building materials and I’m prone to picking up sharp objects, so I constantly have to pay attention going through lumber yards.
Deep_Resource3081@reddit
18 years driving hauling groceries. Never had a tire blowout on truck or trailer. We run tpms on tractor and run flat air system on trailer. Drives replaced at 5/32 summer 7/32 winter and 5/32 on trailer. What’s legal isn’t always safe!
clairered27@reddit
The last time I had one was about 4 yrs ago
Budget_Foundation747@reddit
About 2 a year before COVID. Seems like more after.
santanzchild@reddit
Years between if you are doing your job. Monthly if you are not.
Grungyshawn@reddit (OP)
Aka tire checks before you head out?
santanzchild@reddit
Yes pressure general condition. Crap happens sometimes but you can see warning signs if you actually look a lot of the time.
InevitableUsual4126@reddit
Never had a blowout yet in a little over 2 years. Found a couple nails in tires on pretrip and got them changed before it became an issue. Had a tire go flat on my twice mid route but I was always close enough to a Penske to limp over there and get a new tire put on.
CoolTemperature1602@reddit
Blowout never in 8 years. End up with a flat maybe half a dozen times.
bmrt60@reddit
I’ve had 2 in 5 years
