30M Needing a fresh start in the UK. Where should I move?
Posted by Csarcasm@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 26 comments
Hi,
I’m 30 and recently single after a long relationship. Need to move out of our flat in Cambridge and want to move somewhere completely new, almost all my friends are either married with kids or in my ex girlfriend’s circle, so there isn’t a lot keeping me here and I’m ready for a new chapter in life.
Work-wise I just need to need to commute once a week to Reading, so I’m pretty flexible with location, but would like to be within around 1.5 hours drive from the office if possible.
I’ve also lived in London before, so would prefer something different.
Here’s what I’m after:
-
Things to do: Because I’m building a new social circle from scratch it needs to have clubs/activities I can get stuck into, and preferably be in a city or near a city. I’m not into clubs/bars but want a good social scene for people in their 20s/30s. I’ve seen a lot of people mention Bristol but this is often followed up with comments around its nightlife, which isn’t really my thing.
-
Somewhere charming, characterful (I love Edinburgh but it’s too far from the office, liked Cambridge too).
-
Bonus points: Being near the sea would be cool, am I’m into open water swimming, also big fan of Cotswolds hikes, I’m just wary that the Cotswolds might be a bit rural too easily make friends/meet someone new.
-
I’d initially like to rent a room so it’s low commitment, somewhere cheaper than Cambridge so I can keep saving up for a house.
Any ideas for places to start fresh? Coastal towns, small cities, or hidden gems— open to anything!

Honestly, as someone who's lived in Reading for 7 years, have you thought of, well, Reading? Lots of walking - I'm part of a 20s and 30s walking group. Lots of board games groups and other ways to make friends on meetup. Relatively cheap housing compared to other areas. It's pretty far from the sea but there's lakes with organized swimming and the Thames and Kennet

Bristol might be a bit further away than you'd like, but commuting to Reading from there would be simple.
It's a lovely city with a vibrant nightlife and foodie scene, as well as loads of cultural things to do.
ExternalAttitude6559@reddit
And a horrendous housing market. Most expensive city in the UK after London.

The round table is a good way to build a new social circle wherever you end up. Try this:
https://www.roundtable.co.uk/
It's men only, 18 to 45, we do socials every 2 weeks and meet up with other nearby groups. My one up in Brum did a VR night a couple of weeks ago and we have a butchery course coming up.

Jesus I've been thinking about the round table since forever as i remember my dad loved it. And til I'm too bloody old for it!
BedevilingBen@reddit
Join the ex tablers/41 club, same but for the older gentleman
ThisIsALineLFC@reddit
It's not just for men though, the FAQ says as much.

You've beat me to the punch, one of the best things I've done! Hello from Beverley 257 :)
More of a tag for others who are interested: If you’re aged between 18-45, the Round Table is the perfect fit for men:
https://www.roundtable.co.uk/table-finder
For women, the Ladies Circle offers a similar experience:
https://www.ladiescircle.co.uk/find-your-local-circle/
For older men, there’s the 41 Club:

And for older women, the Tangent Clubs are a great choice:

Thank you for sharing this! Just signed up in my local area, never knew about it before

York.

Try Norwich. Lovely city, plenty of charm and (relatively) close to the coast
wardyms@reddit
Must be 3 hours from Reading?
Nels8192@reddit
2hrs 45mins if you drive. Whilst Norfolk roads are garbage usually, Norwich’s route to North London at least has dual carriageways along most of the route.
wardyms@reddit
They’ve asked to be within 1.5 hours of Reading. I think my point stands.
Nels8192@reddit
I initially missed OPs demands, but was merely answering your 3hrs point (not expecting you to be referring to a round trip).
But if it’s just once a week, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. A fair portion of my town works in London which is 100miles away. As someone that used to regularly drive from Exeter/Bath to Norfolk (4-6hrs each way) I’d personally be alright with Reading once a week.
wardyms@reddit
Oh totally.
Horses for courses. 6 hours out of my day would be very difficult to do not impossible, so I can understand why they’ve set their own limit.
100 miles to London depends where you live of course. If you live in Grantham or Peterborough you’re about an hour on the train and very doable.

I am biased, but I am Welsh born-and-bred and it's the best place in the UK. Lots to do, good city, lots of nature. I love BMXing and its great for that, but you can still get into Cardiff for some amazing nightlife.
soulshock22@reddit
Hi! BMXer here too! I am looking to move to the UK. I can work remotely so anywhere is cool. Is there anywhere with a good BMX scene with good skateparks/trail/pumptracks within riding distance, not too hilly (as I ride brakeless) I like MTB too, so somewhere with good trails and bike parks would be nice! Where in Wales do you suggest?
KeyJunket1175@reddit
I liked living in Guildford, nice pubs, nice uni, nice architecture. Surrey is really nice for hiking.
SingingAlong6@reddit
Rochester? Medway? Surrounding Kent areas
PetersMapProject@reddit
Cardiff, perhaps?
It's a university city and plenty of graduates stay in the area afterwards, so lots of 20/30 something professionals.
Coastal, not all parts of the coast are suitable for swimming but you can at Penarth (there's a dawn swimming club) and Llanishen Reservoir
90 mins by train to Reading
Expect to pay £500-700 per month including bills for a room, so a lot cheaper than Cambridge or Bristol.
pajamakitten@reddit
Winchester is not by the sea but it is charming and close to Reading. You could also try the likes of Salisbury, Bournemouth and Southampton.
Different_Usual_6586@reddit
Bournemouth
BulkyAccident@reddit
South coast cities are probably going to be best for you given your needs, it's going to be a lot more difficult to build up social circle/activities stuff you want in smaller "hidden gem" towns.
Look at Brighton, Southampton, Portsmouth.
cuccir@reddit
Brighton's not exactly cheap, but other than that it hits everything you describe.
