What is your opinion on Mediums/Psychics?

As someone that’s grown up with a mum that believes in this I always thought it was utter bollocks. I went to a medium last night as my partner wanted to go and I can confirm that I still think it’s bollocks.
They were extremely vague and skewed the audiences response to for their narrative.
What is your opinion on them ?

absolute subhuman vermin who exploit vulnerable people for money - they should all be locked up
Boredpanda31@reddit
My gran was a spiritualist. I believe she was able to do it, but I don't believe a lot of people can. Some people abuse it.
I only believed she had the "gift" because someone I know had her ring read by my gran and told me my gran was able to speak to her about things she had never told anyone about (very specific details of things that happened in an abusive relationship).
Expensive-Analysis-2@reddit
Can your Gran tell me next weeks lottery numbers?
Boredpanda31@reddit
She died 10+ years ago. Got a ouija board?

Find someone with a "gift" like your dead nan. 🤷♀️.
Boredpanda31@reddit
It was you that wanted to speak to her for the lottery numbers, not me.

My mum went to see one a few months ago and when she came back, she was happy and all that and she told me some of the things the psychic said and I wanted to explain to my mum how the psychic would have known or said what they said but my mum was so happy that I just left her to be happy.
As for me, I don't buy what they sell as the majority of the time, it's just vague shit that they say with hopes that the person they're talking to will fill in the blanks for them which allows the psychic to continue talking nonsense and appear as if they're talking to the dead.
For example, the psychic my mum went to see brought up Cancer and said that my mum had lost a lot of loved ones to Cancer, which she has but then again, so has a hell of a lot of other people.
Then later into the session, the psychic mentioned "a man" who she could see was "pulling the waist of his jeans". She then asked my mum if she had lost a man in her life recently and my mum said yes, her brother (my uncle). The psychic then said that it was her brother she was seeing as she can see a resemblance between the man and my mum.
The psychic then said that my uncle was now happy because he's thin again and that my mum shouldn't worry about him.
My uncle died of Cancer and he lost a lot of weight during his fight with Cancer but I can tell you now, he was not happy at all about losing weight or having Cancer.
The last days of my uncle's life was incredibly shit for him and I know he didn't want to die as there was so many things in his life that he enjoyed, so I find it hard believe that my uncle spent his final months and days suffering and worrying about dying and then a few years after passing away he happily tells a random woman that he's happy to be dead because he's thin again.
Sorry for the rant.
I just don't like psychics and I miss my uncle dearly.

laalaa1983@reddit
Never gave them much thought/thought it was bollocks until I saw one in late 2020. Tried to not give anything away - she didn’t have my surname, she didn’t have my address until the evening she was booked etc
She told me stuff there’s no way she could have found out elsewhere, she was so spot on with most of her reading & mentioned people/specific situations that aren’t anywhere public/online.
Deep_Marketing8128@reddit
Same! I believe that there are some actually gifted ones, Just rare to 9cme across. But thing she told me were SCARILY accurate, some of which at the time i was like wtf this is not like me and now 3 years later has happened exactly
laalaa1983@reddit
Same. Told me something that hadn’t happened yet but did in relation to a place I had no link with, which then happened the following year. Told me something medical stuff which isn’t public but true.
If all a series of coincidences, then very freaky ones.
CyGuy6587@reddit
My mum and sister have seen one and did the same thing ie. Tried to not give too much away, and yet the medium still managed to give details only our family knows. I'm still not convinced though, there's gotta be more to it
laalaa1983@reddit
Same, I’m not absolutely convinced. I didn’t give me surname so she couldn’t find me online, but even still - she knew stuff that isn’t online at all.
I’m such a logical person that it bugs me that I don’t know how she done it.
Organic_Chemist9678@reddit
There is more to it. They found out things that you THOUGHT only your family knows. Mostly through combing through social media and your online footprint.
WhiteDiamondK@reddit
The lowest of the low.
They generally prey on people who are hurting, missing loved ones. I used to work with someone who went to a psychic regularly as she lost her dad suddenly without being able to repair her relationship with him, and I wouldn’t listen to her talking about the “messages”. I made it known how I felt.
Some people say “Leave them, it’s providing a service to people who need closure” but it’s not. It’s lying, it’s manipulating.
Mackem101@reddit
I used to live near a family who had a relation murdered when she was 15.
That family have spent a fucking fortune on mediums, because it was quite a high profile case, and still occasionally makes local news, they often get contacted by 'psychics' who apparently have been contacted by this poor lass from the other side.
Absolute scum, who take advantage of people at their lowest ebb.

My friends wife died in a tragic accident and about 4 months later we was working one day (civils) and a man randomly came up to him put his hand on his shoulder and said “I know it sucks mate but she’s always here with you”.

Silver-Doughnut-9217@reddit
Always been very torn on this subject. My dad was a psychic who was highly regarded. People would come to our house from miles away for his readings. They always left in tears and couldn't believe the accuracy. I've always believed it's bollocks. He got very ill and just before he died I asked him to send me some kinda message from 'the other side'. It's been 6 years and I'm still waiting.

WebDevWarrior@reddit
If you think about it logically, if ghosts really did exist, adding up all the people who have ever lived and then died over the hundreds of generations of human existance... you wouldn't be able to move an inch without stepping on someones spirit (and considering psychics explicitly somehow focus on talking to whomever they want like a damn telephone call, the whole "passing over" thing doesn't seem to apply).
geeered@reddit
The estimation is that people alive today represent around 5 to 6.7% of the total people (homo sapiens) who have ever lived!
(Not that that's a justification for ghosts, I should note!)
DonkeyJousting@reddit
I wonder how far back in our evolution you’d get ghosts? Do other primates get ghosts? Or can human mediums only contact human ghosts? Do ghosts expire after a while? Did any mediums try to contact, like, the spirit of Ötzi the mummy in the Alps from 3000bc? Or is that too early? What are the spatial, temporal and genetic limitations here?

The only experience I have with them is my MIL went to see one a couple of years ago, and the medium told her she had another grandson on the way.
It came out a few days later that her daughter in law was pregnant. And found out a week or two later me and my partner were having a baby too.
Both turned out to be boys, born two weeks apart.
But I know typically there was a 50/50 chance of both genders and that mediums play on that, but it was just more she didn’t know either my partner or her daughter in law was pregnant
You_are_Retards@reddit
cold reading is supported by statistical probabilities.
perhaos in the questioning your MIL said how old your DIL was and how long married and already had a son...
thats probably enough to guesstimate a 2nd child, and yeah 50/50 on the sex

And not forgetting the “plants” in the venue who listen in on conversations.

I don't believe any of it at all. I think they keep everything very vague and are observant enough to know which way to go when addressing someone specific.
The only situation I found quite baffling was my mum got us tickets to an audience with such and such 'medium'.
There was a lot of people there and she came out and pointed directly to me. It was 20 years a go and I was only 15 years old with my mum sat next to me who was in her 30's. She said sorry I will do my starting bit in a minute, I just need to talk to you first. She said there's a woman with dyed blonde hair and her make-up done nicely then before I even said anything she said she's your grandma and she died when she was only 59! My mum of course got upset because her mum (my grandma) died when she was only 59 and my mum was only 26. She went on to say I have to talk to you because your grandma wants you to know that you'll experience a struggle in life and you'll long for something that you'll struggle to get and she wants you to know that you will get it but you'll have to be patient. Then she said your 3 sisters will get what you want many times over before you do but you'll have grace and you will be blessed with it before you turn 30. Then she went on to do her show.
This was before social media. I don't know how she knew what my grandma looked like (me and my mum both had brown hair), I don't know how she knew the age she died or that I have 3 sisters. Basically though, I struggled with fertility issues and my 3 sisters all had children before I did, even my younger sisters. Eventually when I was in my late 20's, I had my son. I just find it quite baffling that she knew specific details and managed to predict something like that. I don't know if she was just lucky with guesses or what but she definitely didn't know me or my mum and we weren't asked to fill anything out before attending. It definitely helped when me and my husband weren't conceiving. I said we'll have a child before I turn 30, it will be ok.
Despite that experience, I still don't believe in it. I don't know what to make of that though!
Many_Yesterday_451@reddit
Why don't you ask them my opinion 🤔
Thestolenone@reddit
I know a medium personally, she definitely doesn't make it all up and I think she would rather have a normal life.Yes there are shite mediums who pad things out with good guesses to make thngs more exciting, there are probbaly complete fakes. I live in a deprived area of West Yorkshire where nearly everyone had a father who was remote and unemotional, they turn up quite often. But how did she know the specific name of my nephew who lives in my deceased son's house, when my Facebook is locked down tight and I have no other social media and my family live hundred of miles away? I've also seen some very specific things brought up by mediums at open circles where they have no idea who is coming in advance so couldn't possibly know anyhting about them.

Back in my late teens I used to knock about with people who were mad into this. People who did tarot readings, considered themselves 'witches', and in some cases, shamans, worlocks, 'empaths', 'readers' or 'healers'.
Picture the folk at festivals with stalls selling crystals and three-wolf-moon shirts. Seemingly harmless.
There was something comforting about them back then, I sometimes miss that. However, pretty much all of them fell right down the far-right pipeline, we're talking terminally online Facebook /Telegram bullshit, homeschooled kids, antivax, Brexity, Trumpy shit. Chemtrails! Microchips! Oh my!
One of the worst of them used all the mystic, foftune reading, tarot stuff to impress young ladies, and I mean young. Thankfully he's arsed his life up so bad that he's less able to do harm now.
I think we should be so wary of these folks. Most of the ones I know just turned out to be deeply silly people, but some are dangerous manipulators, and the 'woo' scene is a hunting ground for them, either as a money-grift, but also some real noncey shit.

I like to think there is something beyond, and in the right circumstances we all can experience or witness something we can’t explain. That said, anyone that tries to make money off people claiming to speak to deceased loved ones I find to be terrible and fake. They call them ‘cold readings’ and I think John Edward’s was someone accused of doing this and he was so well known for being a medium or something. I see it as Hollywood magic for the most part.

Probably 50:50, I've seen some who appear to be obvious con artists and others that seem to be so deluded they truly believe they're speaking to the dead. I have been a couple of times, with friends and haven't really been impressed at all, it was always so vague. Once there was a slightly convincing story about a lost key, but that could well have been a plant. I went to a spiritualist church once, afterwards there was tea and mingling and a guy approached me who said he was training as a medium and asked if he could give me a message. It was apparently about a link to London. He seemed so very confused when I was adamant I didn't have even the slightest link to London for him to exploit!
lonehorizons@reddit
I guess if they put one plant in the audience and pretend to know a lot of information about the person’s dead relative, the rest of the audience will go away remembering that as a massive success and forget about all the other failures.
steak-and-kidney-pud@reddit
Remember Derek Acorah. “Mary loves dick, Mary loves dick”. Total fraud.

He got busted for having assistants mingle with the audiences in his live shows at the bar before the show started, they’d pretend to be audience members and chat with people about who they wanted to make contact with, then tell him all the details.

I think that if there are people out there with genuine talents, you’re not going to see them on TV or advertising in magazines or putting on shoes for people.
It’s kind of the same principle as “reality” TV. If you’re looking for an actual partner, you’re not gonna find them on Love Island.
More or less everyone who gets into TV is a poseur, and everything you see should not be considered anything more than entertainment. Doesn’t matter if they’re a medium, a Turkey-toothed fame hound doing the rounds of Ex on the Beach and Love Island and every other similar show out there, someone pretending to be a therapist or a doctor.
Sometimes there’s an element of truth among the fakery; Dr Oz has a medical license, Dr Phil has a psychology degree. But if you listen to them for five minutes you can see they’re just caricatures of people. They may or may not realise it. Sometimes people start to buy into their own public image.
If there were real psychics, public forums - TV, live shows - are about the last place you’d find them.

This from 2009. My sister and family live 100 miles (160km) away her daughter, my niece went to a seance. The medium told her to pass a message on to her uncle, me.
My sister told me that the medium had said to my niece the following.
“Your Uncle is divorcing tell him there is another man involved.”
I had not told my sister I was divorcing, the process had just begun, so there was no way anybody would know. I confirmed to my sister that yes I was divorcing but hadn’t told her as we were only just telling family. I also told her there was no other man.
I was wrong, he moved in with my ex 6 weeks after the divorce.

Oh, I dunno. I went to one at a fair once for a laugh, so no pre-booking, no opportunity for research, and she was spookily accurate about a friend of mine. I am sure they will close them for a fee though.

How many times have you been ~~conned~~ read?
alloitacash@reddit
Yeah, greed.
stevebehindthescreen@reddit
I have a mate that's like, if you've been to a medium, he's been to a maximum. I'd say mediums are just as full of shit as my mate is...
pajamakitten@reddit
They are not mediums or psychics. They are conmen or delusional; you can decide which is worse of the two yourself.
JRingo1369@reddit
It is utter bollocks.
captainhazreborn@reddit
Scam artists or mentally ill. No option in between, vast majority are the former and can get in the fucking sea.

Love this spoof of it all https://youtu.be/NoZDYQuSGsE?si=8jRnmC2UpQpDemGd

If they’re doing it for free, deluded. If they’re charging money, absolute scum. Should be a criminal offence.
JimmyBallocks@reddit
fucking vermin preying on the desperate and vulnerable
I fail to see any reason why they should not all be done for fraud and have their livelihoods taken from them
smoulderstoat@reddit
It's utter bollox.
AdhesivenessNo9878@reddit
Absolute grifters and personally I think they engage in a very scummy practice where they make money off people who desparately want closure on big issues that the mediums know full well they see lying about.
Scrambledpeggle@reddit
You're basically asking "is magic real?". No.

Absolute fraudsters
wyo_rando1962@reddit
When one of them predicts the winning lottery numbers I'll believe in them.
SquiffSquiff@reddit
sometimes I have strong opinions on them and sometimes not. Most of the time I'm thinking 'medium'
stebotch@reddit
At best entertainment at worst scammers.
castielsbitch@reddit
Never been to one because it's all bollocks, but would love to go to one to find out exactly how bollocks it is.
MrsCosmopilite@reddit
Charlatans of the cruelest kind. To prey on grief is utterly disgraceful.
charley_warlzz@reddit
I generally think they’re scam artists/professional liars. However, i lost my nan a couple years ago and since then my aunts have started getting progressively more into psychics, because it’s comforting to them. So i wouldn’t go myself, but I dont really disparage them as much any more. I still think its scummy to take advantage of grieving people like that, but i understand the people who buy into it a little better.
Ordinary-Break2327@reddit
They always ask someone aged 75+ "Your parents are deceased?" knowing chances are it's true.
TankFoster@reddit
Con artists. I've got a bit of sympathy for some of the people taken in by them, often they're grieving and think they'll be able to "contact" their recently departed. It's disgusting that these scammers take advantage of them.
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
Reminds me of this https://youtu.be/F7pYHN9iC9I?si=CCFpOeo5EC4J2nXd
Nowadays it's incredibly easy to find out all sorts of info about people and pass it off as a psychic reading.

I feel bad for the people that actually believe in that nonsense. Any reasonable person already knew it was bollocks, but just to drive it home, so that even those brain damaged enough to be swindled can understand, there have been many high-profile TV shows that put their claims to the test in a very public setting that they had no control over, and would you believe it, they failed spectacularly every single time.
There has also been test done in scientific settings that were less public but had the exact same outcome.
The "psychic" is just a person that knows their audience want to believe in their bullshit, so they play on that, people don't like to admit that they're wrong, in fact they will go well out of their way to convince themselves that they're not stupid and they were right all along.
These people have already separated themselves from any logic, any reason, so the illogical and the unreasonable becomes their reality.
The "psychic" knows this and uses it to profit, it's a simple as that really, I doubt there is any "psychic" out there that genuinely believes they can commune with the dead or see the future or whatever else, they're just grifters. Grifters of the worst kind imo because a lot of the time they're preying on vulnerable people who, while incredibly stupid, are often also grieving the loss of loved ones or other such tragedies.
You_are_Retards@reddit
Utter bollocks
Sidebottle@reddit
It's all nonsense. I think some people are more attuned to read body language and the like, but it's not magical.
Some are grifters, IME most are just delusional.
