Meh. As long as it doesn’t interfere with me enjoying the show I don’t get triggered by people on their phones. I’ll let the boomers and older GenX get triggered.
Initial_Run1632@reddit
He's literally showing you that the phone blocked his view
-Economist-@reddit
Yes but that’s just a snapshot of time. We don’t know how long it lasted. Could have been for less than five seconds.
Just_me5698@reddit
No use in paying for floor seats, I’m short so, no hope to see. If I take any video (1-2 songs), I keep the phone in front of me close to my chest so I’m not blocking anyone’s view.
ReaganPack@reddit
Nostalgia hits hard when you remember those days of affordable concert tickets and simpler times.
GenXQuietQuitter88@reddit
My friend wanted to take me to Green Day for my birthday this year, tickets were over $600. I said that was a nice thought but I doubt I will ever attend another concert in my life as I just can't justify the insane cost. Last time I saw Green Day we paid $22. This was in the 2000s so not like 60 years ago or anything.
AdBig5700@reddit
They really chucked that punk rock ethos right out the window, didn’t they?
NorseGlas@reddit
Lmfao Green Day was never punk. They were a manufactured band of kids thrown together by a washed up punk rocker that saw a way to capitalize.
Their whole band was always about making money…. Even though originally they were just a bunch of kids being scammed.
BC_Raleigh_NC@reddit
Tell me more. Who was the washed up punk rocker? I listen to Green Day instead of someone like Nirvana but I still prefer Billy Idol.
NorseGlas@reddit
Larry Livermore, he was in the band the lookouts and met a few of Green Day’s members when living in the emerald triangle…. He helped them put together the band “sweet children” that later morphed into Green Day.
I believe trey cool was his neighbors kid and he talked their parents into letting them form a band. Pretty sure trey was the only one who played an instrument beforehand….
wayfarout@reddit
My only Green Day show cost under $30 for both tickets.
frankduxvandamme@reddit
Saw 'em in the late nineties at the UIC pavilion in Chicago and paid probably $30.
PacRat48@reddit
I saw Twisted Christmas and Stone Temple Pilots at the UIC. Twisted might have been headlined by Oasis?
TabithaC20@reddit
It was more fun to see them at smaller spaces anyway. I'm glad I got to see bands at house shows or small venues. I saw Green Day a few times in the 90s and it was great! Even if a band I used to love does a reunion or fest circuit now I rarely think it is worth it. Seeing things from far away or on a screen I might as well just watch the youtube at home. Tickets, fees, cost of getting to/from venue, overpriced drinks, waiting in line. Meh! I still just try to go see smaller bands at small or DIY venues as much as possible. More fun for everyone!
Chrissyml@reddit
Wow.Where was this? I bought my Metallica tix in December 2022 through Live Nation. I bought show tix for Seattle because they were half the price of the Edmonton tix, even after the USD exchange. My kid lives in Seattle so there's that, too.
doberdevil@reddit (OP)
I wonder if streaming has anything to do with ticket prices. Bands used to sell records, and got a (small) cut of those sales. Now everyone has streaming services and the bands make nothing from it.
So they need to get paid somehow, other than tour merch. And by the time you have all the ticketmaster service fees and everyone else gets their cut, the bands still need to make something...
ins0ma_@reddit
Many bands survive on the profits from their tour merch. On big tours the average spend can be between $40-60 per person.
Merch is big business.
BeBopBarr@reddit
For 1 ticket?! Were those VIP or what?! We have tix to see them in a few weeks, on the floor, and didn't pay more than $250 each (not including fees and not resale)
LivingDisastrous3603@reddit
Holy smokes. My daughter and I saw them in Atlanta. Tix were $80 each and they were pretty good seats. Not pit, mind you. But the lower part of the stands.
But I get it. We looked at wrastlin tickets. Nosebleed x2. Obstructed view. $125. Semi decent tix- $300-600. Floor seats you ask?
$1800. I mean if you got that to drop on em, more power to ya.
dacraftjr@reddit
I mainly miss buying tickets in person only. Damn bots buying out entire arenas in five minutes. Also miss the community of overnight line camping.
PacRat48@reddit
I worked at Subway making $4.25/hr. On that, I paid the electric bill (my rent), all car expenses, discretionary spending, and saw tons of 90’s bands. No way I’m paying over $200 to see anyone. Not even Elvis himself
JDdaboss-pontiac455@reddit
That shit never happened at Pantera
JDdaboss-pontiac455@reddit
And yes different time but you'd get your ass kicked nowadays if they were still around
BC_Raleigh_NC@reddit
Don’t say anything because you’ll hurt their feelings and that’s bad.
tavomcdouglas@reddit
The wife and I were just beside ourselves when, at a family funeral, the daughter was filming and taking pictures of her dead father's casket and service! If that wasn't enough, then posted them to social media!
What is wrong with people not being able to live in the moment. I have a ridiculously expensive phone and I don't have a single concert photo on my phone from the last 10 years! I just don't think about it when I'm in the moment.
Dear-Presentation-69@reddit
This makes me nuts. I want to reach into your photo and smack it to the floor.
i-touched-morrissey@reddit
I worked my ass off so I can pay $500 to stand in the pit and only have to look through 1 layer of phone screens.
Perfect_Rush_6262@reddit
Remember when people would to shows and enjoy the band?
onetwentytwo_1-8@reddit
Phones shouldn’t be allowed at these type of events.
PaulClarkLoadletter@reddit
That’s when you sing as loud as you can so their video features a soundtrack provided by you.
QuietParsnip@reddit
Even better if you sing off key!
everyoneisnuts@reddit
I don’t know any other way lol
QuietParsnip@reddit
Honestly, same. 😄
PaulClarkLoadletter@reddit
This is how you do it.
No-Hospital559@reddit
That's obnoxious, I notice a lot more talking at concerts now as well. What concert is this?
Slade347@reddit
Yeah, for the most part, I don't really care that much about people filming, but people constantly talking? That's the one that really gets me pissed off.
doberdevil@reddit (OP)
And every 30 seconds people were getting up and walking around.
Streetlight Manifesto/B.O.T.A.R. in Seattle at the Paramount.
No-Hospital559@reddit
It's hit or miss with these "main character" types at concerts. People always tell you to just talk to them when these sorts of annoyances occur but I have never once had one of these people just go "oh sorry" and stop. They usually get even more obnoxious.
doberdevil@reddit (OP)
Every time this happens, I say something. And every single time they act like I'm the one being an asshole.
Mammoth-Captain1308@reddit
I saw Def Leppard a few weeks ago and the people on our row were in and out so much it was ridiculous. I never want to sit in the aisle seat again.
sawyer_whoopass@reddit
Tori Amos has been known to stop shows to scold people in the front rows for chattering while she’s trying to play.
AlfaNovember@reddit
I was at a small gig recently where the artist opened the show with “Go ahead and take pictures or video during the first song, and then let’s put the phones away and enjoy being here”
It worked. it was awesome.
CactusHide@reddit
I’ve seen this a few times. It’s a solid move for the artists behalf, and I think a lot of the audience appreciates it too.
I get wanting a picture or short video to remember a time, but holding up a phone to record full on songs, or spending as much time on your phone as not, is inconsiderate to everyone there
fakeaccount572@reddit
It's literally one of two things -
those videos will never be seen again
It will go on YouTube and gather thousands of likes, therefore generating money.
thebizzle@reddit
To be honest, I watch tons of filmed concerts on YouTube. It’s nearly as good as going in some cases.
dacraftjr@reddit
(2a) As soon as you get enough views to monetize, you get a copyright strike and your channel is demonetized.
pung54@reddit
Saw Tool recently and they did the opposite. Had everyone put away their phones except for the last song. It worked pretty well.
Also, just go to the pit!
NorseGlas@reddit
Last time I got in the pit I got carried out on a stretcher.
I had to argue with doctors for 3 hours that I don’t need pain killers for them to put my knee back in socket before they would do it. And then a month before I could walk, and another 3-4 before it was right. Needless to say my wife was not happy after she drove 2 hours to get me from the hospital either…
And that was ages ago….. old broken ass me probably wouldn’t get going again. Stay out of the pit 🤣😂
dacraftjr@reddit
I’m 50. Went to a punk pop show with my 26yo (6’, 380lb) son last Friday. He went to the pit, I stayed on the wall near the bar. We both went home happy. I gave up the pit when he was a baby.
minirunner@reddit
I wish that was the answer. I get pit tickets pretty frequently and there’s always a sea of phones.
TifCreatesAgain@reddit
Not without standing up!
HelloKitten99@reddit
We went to the Sphere in Vegas to see Dead & Company over the summer and I did take two ten second clips of the visuals just for posterity, but there are people that literally watch the entire concerts through their phones. It is so distracting and obnoxious.
everyoneisnuts@reddit
Yeah, there’s definitely a happy medium there. There’s nothing wrong with taking a few videos. It’s just when the person is recording the whole song of multiple songs it gets ridiculous. I like to have a few show clips of videos to remember it by. 10-15 years from now I’ll barely remember it so I like to have things like that to look back on. It doesn’t impact my ability to enjoy and watch the concert even a small amount lol
jaeldi@reddit
I remember seeing a picture of U2 from someone sitting waaaaay up there. U2 was a tiny speck! I was amazed at how big the inside of the sphere was. What was your experience like?
HelloKitten99@reddit
It was absolutely amazing. We were on a lower level to the right of Dead and Company where we could see the stage perfectly and the visuals of the sphere as well. We went 3 nights in the same seats and I will never forget it for the rest of my life. Highly recommended 😊
dravenstone@reddit
Back of the floor Jeff side is where the folks that were there for the music and the dancing were at the sphere pretty consistently this summer. Look for the spinners and you will find the most cell phone and chomping free experience at most any dead show - back left of floor or lawn is almost always a safe bet.
Was lovely back there every night we were there.
everyoneisnuts@reddit
Is the person behind you asking the same thing lol?
twistedevil@reddit
I don’t know why people have to hold their phones all the way up in the air. You can hold it at eye level or even body level without disturbing anyone else and get a perfectly fine photo or video. I say this as a shorter person.
IP_Janet_GalaxyGirl@reddit
Scream and cheer REALLY LOUDLY when you’re that close to the fake videographer. They won’t like that, I’ll bet.
Breklin76@reddit
Start talking loudly about the case of shingles you had and how bad it was around your butthole, segue that into a detailed account of your colonoscopy.
Breklin76@reddit
I’m so happy you paid to watch the show on the small screen.
Jazzspasm@reddit
There’s a guy behind OP thinking the same thing
TakeAnotherLilP@reddit
I loathe assholes that do this and it always happens to me. I just get close to them and begin talking loudly (I have a very deep voice) so their recording is fucked. Works every time
Adolph_OliverNipples@reddit
Tool shows are great because this is forbidden.
If you really want a video of any other concert, just go on YouTube the day after that show. Someone else will have posted one there. They wasted their night holding a phone in the air, and they annoyed the people behind them, and you didn’t have to.
GenkiElite@reddit
You're blocking the view of the person behind you.

doberdevil@reddit (OP)
Steely Dan? The audience all had those Jitterbug phones...

king crinson / robert fripp did not put up with this BS and made their shows so much more enjoyable to appreciate because you could just be in the moment. at this point, if i can’t buy front row balcony, i’m inclined not to go

No_Routine_3706@reddit

eeksie-peeksie@reddit
Drives me CRAZY. I try to tell people, you want to film? Keep it at the level of your eyes and block only yourself
--MilkMan--@reddit
I’ve been going to a whole bunch of shows over the last 3 years and can definitively say the biggest offenders are often from our age group or boomers. There never fails to be at least two or three idiots that will attempt to record entire songs while obstructing everyone’s view WHILE leaving their bright light on, completely oblivious or just not caring. It’s infuriating. Just watch the fucking show.
No-Brick6817@reddit
I saw Lady Gaga on interview, saying that everyone at all her shows are just on her phone the whole time. They’re not present in the moment they’re just posting on social media. She said, put your phones away and be present in this moment right now… Dance and enjoy the music!
Riverskyegirl@reddit
Saw Passenger last night and he (Mike) requested people put their phones away during a song just to enjoy the moment.
mikeymikeymikey1968@reddit
Remember when you could afford to go to the show. You'd buy a ticket and just pay for it. No stupid gotcha junk fees. Then, there were opening bands. There were these bands that weren't quite as famous as the headliner. Remember those?
Shawnaldo7575@reddit
If you have a drink with a straw and a napkin... Pee shooter time!!!

No_Zebra2692@reddit
Is that the Paramount? Gorgeous theater.
I saw Prince at a small venue once, and he scolded someone for whipping out their phone to take photos. He'd probably lose it today.
jaeldi@reddit
I'm officially old. I really enjoy the recent televised concerts. I'm not a crazy Taylor Swift fan, but I downloaded a copy of her concert for my 79 yo mom. It was really good. It was nice to watch it in the comfort of my home on my 86 inch TV. It was LONG. It was great to pause it and take breaks and not miss anything. It was great to see all the close ups, wide shots, etc. It was filmed by a good director. I know the energy wasn't the same, but since I'm not a teen, I unexpectedly really enjoyed it more not being in a crowd of people that I don't have a lot in common. So now I'm interested in TS's greatest hits. Lol. She puts on a good show.

Not a band but went to see some comedian in a club trying out new material before he went on tour and we had to put our phones in some kind of bag to avoid vids.
prickleweasel@reddit
No cell phones at Tool. It's wonderful.
GroveGuy33133@reddit
Maynard wants attendees to be able to live in the moment, not their phones.
Which is great, but still sad they had to mandate behavior at their shows.
A tour t-shirt is a souvenir from a show, not some digital file you’re never gonna look at again.
It’s like chompers at a Dead show (substitute today’s jam band name as you will). So spun they don’t even get why they’re there, just gonna yell over the music to their friend about inane BS nonstop.
KarmaPolice72@reddit
Chompers are the fucking worst. I get wanting to catch up with tour buddies and all, but save that shit for set break or the lot.
doberdevil@reddit (OP)
The people who were in the seats before these idiots grabbed them were relatively short people. But Dad had to wear his cool hat with a wide brim, blocking my wife's view. And his son must've spent 25 bucks on hair product to raise it 6" off his scalp.
One time I sat behind a dude that was a little smaller than Andre the Giant. Nothing that guy could've done about it. I stared at the back of his big ass head the entire show, I couldn't even lean around him. But don't purposely be an asshole.

jsakic99@reddit
They will never watch that video in the future. And they probably missed most of the concert.
IllogicalPenguin-142@reddit
Yeah, years ago, I tried recording everything, but I realized that I never rewatched any of the videos I took. I think it’s better to be in the moment and just rely on your memory. The memory is going to be better in the long run anyway.
AdBig5700@reddit
I have friends that record all of their snowboard runs on a go pro/selfie stick. You did it, you lived it…are you really going to watch it later?
ravenlily@reddit
I have really bad memory issues. Adhd etc. I go to a ton of concerts. I'll record half of one of my fave songs and it'll Kickstart my memory of the show when I rewatch it.
alvehyanna@reddit
I bet 99% of those videos never get rewatched. I've done that at shows for the last 10 years and I think only once ever gone back and watched.

Dude was filming video, not just taking a photo. Ironically they moved to the empty seats in front of us because there were tall people in front of them.
They were pretty upset when I asked him to cut it out, and the woman he was with was visibly pissed about it. Halfway through last song she stood up and started dancing, to block our view.

QuietParsnip@reddit
Only time I did a video for an entire song at a show was because it was a friend of mine performing and he was singing a new song that hadn't been recorded yet. but I kept the phone at around chin height. International_Low284@reddit
The smaller venue in my area has defined rules around standing and dancing. They designate a limited “dancing area” in the aisle, and those who want to dance must do so there. There are also certain shows that are designated as “dancing shows”, and that means you should expect everyone to be up and dancing and don’t go to that show if you don’t want that. All other shows it is expected that people will generally stay seated except possibly for the last song/encore. It works pretty well. Phones are usually out, but I haven’t found it to be too bad. I often try to get first row balcony if I can.
