What was quintessential Saturday night telly?

From any time period, what do you think is some quintessential TV on a Saturday night. What just belongs there?
FinalEdit@reddit
Not 100% these were on a Saturday but worth mentioning:
Bobby Davro
Russ Abbott
Hale and Pace
Red Dwarf was on a Sunday but fuck it.
Gladiators
You Bet!
mrsjohnmurphy81@reddit
999 with Michael Buerk was that on a Saturday?
idontlikemondays321@reddit
I think I’d still get palpitations hearing the theme today
mrsjohnmurphy81@reddit
I had a fire plan and everything lol
FinalEdit@reddit
I didn't look directly at fireworks for years after that show
idontlikemondays321@reddit
Blind Date, Stars in Their Eyes, Gladiators. The peak trilogy. How we have fallen.
pajamakitten@reddit
The Gladiators reboot on BBC1 was decent. If it was hosted by people other than Bradley and Barney Walsh then it would have been better.
FinalEdit@reddit
I agree, their banter is cringe and Bradley Walsh is just on way too many programmes. I couldn't get fully into the show because of their stupid back and forth nonsense.
idontlikemondays321@reddit
I went to the filming. I quite like them
paper_zoe@reddit
Man O Man with Chris Tarrant too. And Big Break and the Generation Game on BBC 1

A peak trilogy of its own.
Successful_Ad_2888@reddit
Man o Man and Nightfever were bangers before going out in the 90s
MidnightRambler87@reddit
Night Fever… Channel 5 and Suggs right?
Successful_Ad_2888@reddit
Yeah. Celebrity Karaoke
jellywelly15@reddit
Teatime, had to be the Brookside omnibus! Even if I’d seen it in the week. Later, Xena, and Martial Law.

Do you perhaps remember the candle flickering to music challenge? I feel like I'm the only person who saw this!
Bellamiles85@reddit
The Generation Game, Noel’s Houseparty, Gladiators, Big Break and Blind Date.
What a time to be alive!
daz1987@reddit
Generation Game, Noel's House Party, Blind Date, Gladiators.
Used to love staying over at my Grandparents house on a Saturday night and watching them all and giggling away.
HenshinDictionary@reddit
Doctor Who was for a very long time, although it's jumped about a bit. Seasons 19-21 were twice weekly midweek, Seasons 37-39 were Sundays, and Season 40 technically aired on TV on Saturday night, but most fans had already seen it on the iPlayer by then.
Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and The X Factor/Britain's Got Talent always were for me too.
pajamakitten@reddit
Harry Hill's TV Burp. It was probably the last good show ITV did that was quintessential Saturday night TV.
fineskylark88@reddit
Born in 99 so mine would have to be X Factor
pajamakitten@reddit
I'm so sorry.
cloche_du_fromage@reddit
A Team, Generation Game.

Beadle's About
Disastrous_Candle589@reddit
That programme with cilla black? Think it was called moment of truth - they would turn up at the contestants home and pick one of them at random to learn a skill for a week and then they would have one chance to perform it successfully live to win prizes picked by their family.
In a way it was quite cruel if they failed but was good to see the footage of them practicing as much as they could and then doing well and winning everything their family wanted.
There are good shows mentioned here already. I don’t tend to watch live TV now as there’s not as much on. For me good Sat eve entertainment should be new. Whenever I look it’s always old films, sporting events or repeats of things that don’t seem interesting. We need more game shows, live stuff and variety.

Noel's house Party

Sammy the Shammy.. All seems a bit cringy now, but every Saturday night we would watch it.
MidnightRambler87@reddit
They repeated one a few Saturdays ago on BBC Four, it was an enjoyable watch for an hour, but not as hilarious as I remember.
Rose tinted glasses and all that.
catsaregreat78@reddit
And very little choice!

ITV late-ish 90's was gold, you had OG gladiators followed by blind date followed by family fortunes, absolute bliss for 3 hours.
BarryF123@reddit

With this and Big Break on telly when I was a kid, it shocked me in later years when I discovered that Jim Davidson was not in fact a very nice man.
DavosLostFingers@reddit
Some good ones mentioned already. I'd also add You Bet! And Big Break
