Is very-small second monitor a thing?
Posted by Megarboh@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 193 comments
Want a second monitor to play Youtube vids while I game to satisfy my short attention span zoomer brain. But my desk don't have that much of a space, and not much a need for a regular sized second monitor. Just putting my phone next to me works functionally, but the audio wouldn't be coming from the same source (headset), and it's a hassle to setup some sort of dual sound source. So I'm wondering if there are any ultra small monitor available on the market that are in the range of iphone-to-ipad size.
pf100andahalf@reddit
To add to what others have mentioned, you can also use a tablet or a cell phone for playing videos/movies/whatever while using pc. That's what I do and it frees up my pc completely.
mangeedge@reddit
I have 2 portable monitors that I use for work all the time, I haven't used them as secondary monitors on my desk because I have 3 of those already. The portable ones are nice because they pack up into my backpack along with my laptop and I can have a double or triple monitor setup on the road. The Asus one I have is 1080p 165hz at 15.6 inches and can be utilized as a single cord solution for 60hz or a USBc cable and HDMI for 165hz
wryterra@reddit
Yes small second monitors are a thing. However...
I use steelseries arctis nova which works as a wifi headset for the pc and a bluetooth headset for my ipad at the same time. So not only is the sound coming from the same headset but I can also adjust the volume of both independently, which is great.
Before I got these I simply used airplay receiver as an app on my PC to stream my iPad audio to my PC, again, the audio comes from the same source that way.
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
Good to know, will look into it
frensacc@reddit
Do NOT buy the arctis series, or steelseries in general, bought one and replaced the wires 50x just for its (already infamous) static noises to stick arond
Miserable_Return_764@reddit
I have Steelseries everything, including Arctis Nova 7 and like them because they work well and reliably. I think it is all personal. I would tell people not to buy something solely on my negative experience.
Xeonnex@reddit
Did you or anyone else also experience the issue where the headset lowers its own volyme to 0 constantly?
frensacc@reddit
Mine kinda does the opposite, its volume is almost unbearably loud at random times, I decided to chip in an extra 40$ or so and just get a white Razer barracuda that comes tonight and ship that back
HerroKitty420@reddit
The barracuda sound quality is t that great for the price but they have a design flaw where the swivel is by the ear pieces. It's made of thin plastic instead of metal and it will crack over time. I'd return them while you still can
frensacc@reddit
I just unboxxed it, sound quality isnt bad at all and the wuality feels more than good enough for everyday use headphones š
HerroKitty420@reddit
Yeah it's brand new it should feel like that. Just telling you what's going to happen, I'm not the only one it's a known issue.
frensacc@reddit
Eh i have a 2 year warranty ill js thug it out
frensacc@reddit
Any recs for white headphones that double as casual headphones too? I got the barracuda mainly to wear out too
eraguthorak@reddit
I've had the arctis 7 for about 5 years now and it still works beautifully. I just replaced the ear pads the other day because one of them was coming off, but absolutely no complaints about the audio or connectivity.
CruelFish@reddit
So either they have some quality control issues or one of you is treating the headset like a baby.Ā
Like for instance people complain about the build quality of hifiman headphones but Mine are identical to when they were bought due to treating mine like a baby with a brittle bone disorder.
eraguthorak@reddit
I mean - I don't toss my headphones around, sit on them, or toss them in a backpack with a bunch of rocks then go for a mile run.
I have a headphone stand on my desk to keep them out of the way when I'm not wearing them, and then transition them from there to my head and back lol. Occasionally I'll take them to work (office job) whenever I have a high workload and need to focus, but then I usually just carry them with me.
doobied@reddit
I've had mine for about the same have replaced headband and earpads.i love these headphones but when adjusting volume sometimes it will cut out on one side only .
frensacc@reddit
Headphones glitching out asymmetrically is literally the biggest red flag to lazy manufacturing or corner cutting in design/programming š
frensacc@reddit
Did you use them with 3.5mm? The arctis nova 1p for example only has 3.5mm aux cable and the provided cable has static noise and every cable with the headset does too, its a very common issue and theres like 50 forums on the lines of headsets, youre at best lucky and at worst just didnt use one of the provided connectivity tools š
eraguthorak@reddit
Mine has a 3.5mm cable and a USB dongle that it connects to wirelessly. I usually use the dongle and never have any connection issues. I will occasionally use the cable when I need to plug into my phone for whatever reason but I don't recall any issues with it - though it's probably been a few months since I did that last.
YeetedSloth@reddit
Iāve used the steel series software for about a year and ended up just deleting it. The software is a major hassle, the clipping software downright does not work half the time, and thereās a ton of extra bloatware to top it off. 3/10 their mixer is nice but when you spend as much time fixing audio inputs and outputs (because it adds 5) as you spend playing games it really detracts from the gaming experience.
Old-Resolve-6619@reddit
I use it and itās been getting better. The extra stuff I leave off.
wryterra@reddit
To be clear, having a wifi and bluetooth input on the headset is independent of software. You can have PC and iPad play on the same headset and adjust the volume of both without using steelseries software at all.
That said GG/Sonar has, historically been garbage. That's true. It's getting better though.
lorimar@reddit
The higher end Bose headphones can do this too and it works really well
TH3_Captn@reddit
I've been waiting for this technology for years. Actually game changing. Thank you!
__GayFish__@reddit
I love my Steelseries for this reason. When I bought mine, I knew it had both but when I discovered I could have both operating, it was a game changer
johnnnybravado@reddit
Yeah I've got a pair of LucidSound 50Xs, they can do the same thing.
I've got two monitors though, so rarely use them for the dual function. I do scare the crap out of myself with that feature quite often though; I'll forget they are connected to my phone and open a video at max volume. Usually while a game is loading or something, so my guard is completely down š¤£
noodlesvonsoup@reddit
Why would you need two separate sound inputs? It just sounds like an unnecessary hassle.
wryterra@reddit
So I can listen to two separate devices. It's really not a hassle at all.
noodlesvonsoup@reddit
That's fair enough, you do you, I personally would just run everything I need to on my pc. But if you are happy with your way, that is all that counts.
wryterra@reddit
Sure, running everything on the PC is a definite option. But for me I enjoy having a full screen game on the PC and a YouTube video on the iPad with touch screen controls and the ability to easily turn the video volume up or down depending on how it balances with the game.
Different strokes.
noodlesvonsoup@reddit
Makes sense now that you have elaborated. And to be fair it sounds perfect if you haven't got a second monitor.
wryterra@reddit
I used to do multi monitor but I got sick of constantly having my head turned very slightly one way or the other with two monitors and didn't have room for a third.
These days I use one 5120x1440 gives me the best of both. Lots of screen real estate when I'm working with windows. I use snap spaces to have a 'full' 2560x1440 window that's right in the center of my eyeline and space around the edges for chat clients / terminals / feeds that I want to keep an eye on or I can snap windows to have the equivalent of side by side 1440p screens if that's preferable for a given task.
When gaming, though, it's a full 32:9 and iPad as second screen.
It works for me. :)
defferfora@reddit
At the same time?? That's awesome, I never knew such a thing was possible. I'm assuming it's because wifi + Bluetooth?
BananasAreEverywhere@reddit
It's not technically Wi-Fi but yes, it does allow you to Bluetooth and a separate 2.4 GHz connection to the dock simultaneously.

Look up laptop second monitors, theyāll cost you less than $100 bucks
i_give_you_gum@reddit
I bought a used 24" regular monitor for $50, I had a smaller one, which you could probably buy for $25 now.
I don't understand OPs need for a smaller monitor?
danuser8@reddit
OP states he got no room for a second monitor on the desk, so he wants it as small as possible
i_give_you_gum@reddit
Gotcha, but the thing that takes up the room is the stand and base, the stand doesn't really change size that much if your monitor is 22 inches vs 18.
The monitor itself can actually extend beyond the length of the desk, because it's a flat screen and not a crt
Digital-Dinosaur@reddit
I've been thinking about getting a Google Nest Hub or similar
PiersPlays@reddit
Just plug your phone into your PC and pipe the audio through. The exact cables and settings will vary based on your hardware but most configurations would allow you to do it cheaply.
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
How to do that?
PiersPlays@reddit
I see in another comment you responded to that someone already gave you broad instructions.
If you want help with the specifics you'd need to explain what specific hardware you are using...
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
What types of hardware is relevant here?
PiersPlays@reddit
What phone do you have, what motherboard/PC do you have, what headset do you have?
Exactly how to connect your devices depends on what devices you have.

Audeze maxwell
PiersPlays@reddit
Great just grab your 40 pin ipod dock and we can get started...
Let's come at it from a different angle. Plug your 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable into the line-in port on the back of your PC and into the audio out 3.5mm audio port on the iPhone or iPad you're trying to connect to it.

I use a 27ā for my main screen and I have a small 7.5ā mounted upside down beside it. I will upload a picture later and a link to the monitor I absolutely love it. I had the same situation wanted a second monitor for discord and Spotify but didnāt need a full size monitor

Lol. But, how's the screen quality?
Entire-Butterscotch2@reddit
I would say it's good but i have used bad displays all my life so i aint the best source.

Entire-Butterscotch2@reddit
It has a weird resolution of 2160 x 1440 according to windows. I am pretty sure they repurpose laptop screens for this and that it's probably the Huawei Matebook 14 2022 display as the specs line up.
NotRed_0@reddit
I'm planning to incorporate a portable monitor as my secondary, right under my primary as I too don't have the desk space and ergonomics for full sized side by side
Disastrous-Body6034@reddit
they have many, easiest to find them by searching for portable monitors that use usb instead of hdmi or displayport
coolkid42069911@reddit
Others have mentioned small monitors. However, another option that maybe could also work for you is a wall mounted monitor. You don't need to worry about desk space if it's not on the desk :)
OwnZookeepergame6413@reddit
Personally I would go with some cheap second hand monitor on marketplace. If you use it verticle with a mount arm it takes very little space, leaves the surface usable and you can move it away if need be
GodBearWasTaken@reddit
Itās a thing as people have saidā¦ but more seriously, if you brain has this issue, it wonāt improve if you satisfy it. Being bored is actually a good thing in limited doses.

Man, anything can be a thing, build as you want, have a giant tv as a monitor, or something small, its whatever you make it
Niclasnight@reddit
There are small monitors like you described, but if your PC supports Bluetooth, you can just transfer audio from your phone to your PC using a small application called "Bluetooth Audio Receiver" on the Microsoft Store
sops-sierra-19@reddit
I bought a $40 monitor mount off of amazon that allows me to "stack" both of my monitors on top of each other. Could be an option if you can't find a monitor in the size you're looking for.
NewsofPE@reddit
would you happen to have a link to that? sounds very nice if you don't have much horizontal space
Xenvar@reddit
I did this but i use a pretty weak ikea desktop so i had to buy a metal plate to sandwich the desk on top and bottom so the clamp would't crush the desk. Used for a 27 and 24 inch monitor.

Just vertically stack your monitors. I need two monitors for productivity and as long as your comfortable sitting a little bit lent back it works great. (I also recommend going on a few days youtube/social media detox, it will do wonders for your ability to focus, haha)

I have a 15inch LCD monitor that I mainly got for streaming to keep an eye on chat and stuff. Now I use it for just like you said.
I watch podcasts, longer videos and such while I game on my 27 inch 1440p monitor. Satisfies the media consumption addiction I have nicely.

If desktop space is the primary concern, I would recommend a monitor arm and a regular sized monitor. The arm start around $30 but go up to $300 for the ultra heavy duty ones. Iāve been a PC gamer for over 20 years and I recently converted to monitor arms and let me tell you it is a game changer.
Stooovie@reddit
Yes, and you definitely don't want a weak arm so every time you touch your table, the display wiggles around like crazy. Or, mount it on the wall.

I've used software called spacedesk to turn my shitty Fire tablet into a monitor accessible over WiFi. You could use that with your phone.

Yeah, they're called portable monitors. They are usually USB-C powered, 1080p, and 14-17". Pretty easy to find, but save yourself some time and just look into the Asus Zen screen line.

Yeah it works I ran like this for a while but tbh if you get the new a50xs you Audio problem goes away bc they connect to phone and pc at same time

I got a 15" portable Asus monitor I throw all my YouTube, Spotify and other streaming stuff onto. It's a USB-C monitor so it just does it own thing. I'm very happy with a 34" ultrawide paired with a 16" second monitor.
The small monitor gets the secondary stuff like a music player, Discord or whatever it is. The big monitor has the work, or when I play game I want the game full screen on a big display.
In my use, I have no need for the second monitor to be a big. Small saves desk space and is also helpful with my speaker placement, because a 16" monitor is very low.

So I used to always have a second monitor but havenāt for about 3-4 years because I rarely ever used it and a single monitor just looks cleaner imo. However, recently, Iāve been playing a game that has lots of grinding / AFKish stuff to do, and I thought how nice it would be to have a dedicated smaller monitor for youtube, spotify, discord, etc.
I ended up buying a small 16ā portable monitor and amazon (the exact model here - REMOVED LINK ((search up AZOPA portable 15.6ā monitor on amazon)) - on sale for only $60 bucks) and itās been great! Yeah you can get small monitors. I have a 10.5 inch 1280p usb monitor, as well as a 14" 1440. If you're already using the hdmi socket in your GPU you might wanna get a displayport to hdmi adapter for it, as most mini displays use mini-hdmi or display over usb, but only a few motherboards support display over usb.
DasPike@reddit
I used a 14" portable display for the years I was WFH. Perfect for background media and/or extra desktop estate that I can easily pack up when my day is done.
nonowords@reddit
There are solutions for using a phone/tablet as a monitor. https://www.spacedesk.net/?
One of the big downsides though is scaling, you ideally want the ppi to be somewhat similar if you plan to do absolutely anything other than put a video stream on it. But there are some solutions to get around that. https://github.com/mgth/LittleBigMouse
polmeeee@reddit
I have it, but tbh it costs just about as much as a regular monitor. I have since switched the tiny monitor with a regular monitor but in vertical orientation. So in a way it is 2 tiny monitors stacked on top of each other.
LouDiamond@reddit
i have my 2nd monitor above my main monitor to make up for small desk space
turtleship_2006@reddit
Look at spacedesk or any similar software that lets you use your phone as an extra monitor, the audio will be output from the same headset and everything.
There are loads of options, including free ones like this, and this one lets you connect a variety of devices (iPhone/iPad, android, other PCs, anything with a web browser) over WiFi or USB so you can see if meets your needs or if it's easier to buy a second screen.
noodlesvonsoup@reddit
Two monitors are the way to go, I have 50" main monitor for gaming on and a 32" secondary monitor for watching stuff on.
Redacted_Reason@reddit
I like a vertical side monitor. Would that fit your bill?
vdfritz@reddit
i used to have a 24" second monitor but bought an ARZOPA 15.6" portable monitor and loved it so much i got rid of the old 24" side monitor and use that instead
so main 24" 144hz monitor in front of me, 15.6" portable monitor on the left (turns on with any usbc charger, has usbc and mini hdmi inputs
Zeptheboss@reddit
If you have a ipad you can use software like easycanvas to use it as a second mini monitor.
SoundlessScream@reddit
Look for a small second monitor that would attach to the top of your current monitor and do a vertical dual monitor setup. I was able to find horizontal oriented monitors by searching "clip on second monitor" that would attach to your already existing monitor. With a little more looking through those keywords you can probably find that the ones that show up first or maybe a few can be attached to the top.
devildaggers@reddit
Try spacedesk
SodaFloatzel@reddit
Grab a small widescreen TV or monitor - I'm talking 22" or less, 720 \~ 1080p, but with decent DPI and VESA mounting points - plus a VESA mounting arm. In my case I've got a Visio M220VA fitting this role.
Now, hear me out: rotate it 90 degrees. You can do that. You can also Extend your Desktop to it and orient the TV position on the arm, so the bottom edges of both displays are aligned.
In practice it takes up a lot less horizontal space to maintain the same amount of available video real estate - I can watch videos and have Discord open stacked vertically off to the side while I'm also gaming fullscreen on my main monitor.
Ariiawa_@reddit
you said using your phone is adequate, spacedesk is a free program that let's you use your phone as a second monitor through either usb or wifi (usb obviously works better)
Significant_Apple904@reddit
If you want to keep your phone as the small monitor, you can potentially get an audio splitter that would allow multiple sources of audio connect to the same output device (headphone)
FreeVoldemort@reddit
My second monitor is small. My primary is 32 inch 4k 144hz. Secondary is some old tiny one that works perfectly for what you want to do. I do the same. Especially love it when someone gets grumpy and stalls on MTG Arena like I'm not entertaining myself on the second screen.
Epic_Allay@reddit
Oh totally. I have an ancient 600x800 HP15 something that uses VGA and is like 15 years old but i use it for twitch chat
just look on ebay or facebook marketplace or smth I'm sure you can find a cheap monitor that works if you're just playing videos
Targetm12@reddit
You could get something like this so you can get a normal monitor with vesa mounting. They also make them side by side if that works too.
NV-Nautilus@reddit
Depending on the space you have it might be worth using a small mixer for your headset. Otherwise you could use just about any "portable" monitor or maybe a used 4:3 panel.
Prodigy_of_Bobo@reddit
Get a phone stand homie
Psychobillycadillac1@reddit
anything is a "thing" when you're custom building.
sydekix@reddit
I used Spacedesk to transform my iPad or phone into a secondary display before I got another monitor. Pretty easy to use
chibicascade2@reddit
I got a 19" 900p monitor from goodwill. It was like $10. I have had it around forever, but I finally hooked it up last night to watch TV while I was gaming.
FarmingJediPokemon@reddit
I highly recommend getting a cheap small TV with HDMI and just using that as your second monitor. Thatās what I did and I do the same thing youāre wanting to do. Iām not sure where youāre located but Walmart has some small TVs for like $50, but you could also see if anyone in your area is selling or getting rid of one and maybe pay even less (if anything).
Before I got my second āmonitorā I just got a cheap phone stand and used my earbuds with my headset over them. Worked just fine until I wanted a screen to bring Discord over to while Iām playing with friends.
Mallevs_m@reddit
If all youāre going to do is play youtube videos just get a tablet
fuzzynyanko@reddit
Definitely. If you are monitoring logs in a PC, a small 15" monitor can work great, especially in portrait. However, it might be unsexy to sell them in a store. Also look for HDTVs
Admiral_peck@reddit
I'm running 24's for my secondaries
Sol33t303@reddit
Theres small portable monitors you can get the size of like a small laptop screen, they are great for when you need to work from a laptop on the go.
MagicPistol@reddit
Even if the desk is small, you could just get a dual monitor arm and turn the 2nd monitor sideways to use in portrait mode.
Ok_Seaworthiness6534@reddit
i used to have a monitor that was like , 14'' ( not sure ) Just to have my dm open all time at work and often used it to watch videos withou an issue ;D helped me a lot, today i got a 720p one 19''
beearghpea@reddit
I used to use a 15.6" monitor in portrait next to a 27" monitor in landscape. They aligned almost perfectly, I'm always surprised I don't see many / if any examples of others doing this. I 3D printed a vesa bracket that let me connect it to a lightweight tablet arm so I could rotate it for vids if I wanted. I found it really useful!
Iflail@reddit
Maybe look into OnTopReplica, free program that you can set up to whatever you have running I usually use it with YouTube to set up the screen in a corner that wonāt cover any game UI elements I need to see, then change the window size and opacity to 75% in the off chance thereās something I need to see in that corner.
tekkn0@reddit
21.5" is the best size for 2nd screen imo. Perfect to watch movies while grinding your favorite game.
TheDialupNinja@reddit
Monitor arm?
majds1@reddit
Depends how small. I mean you can go with whatever monitor you want, i personally have a 27 inch 1440p screen as my primary monitor, and a 22 inch 1080p secondary screen for youtube, discord, or guides for some games. To me that's perfect, but if it was any smaller i wouldn't like it very much.
Inevitable-Gur-3013@reddit
Try spacedesk app to make the phone a second monitor.
littleemp@reddit
You seriously didnt even try to search amazon for portable monitors.
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
oh thatās the word for it, been searching with other words and just been seeing regular monitors. Will check that out
Felice3004@reddit
Basically all laptop mointors are also available as portable monitors and most monitors below 20" is a portable one
You can easily find 13-15" monitors that are fhd with 60hz for 100$ and less, best producers imo are arzopa and uperfect but there are a lot (especially on aliexpress and amazon)
jiltanen@reddit
I have been using tablet to that.
If you want sound to come through same speakers you can connect tablet to pcās line in and use windows mixer to passthrough the sound.
No-Reputation72@reddit
If youāre looking for a monitor about the same size as your phone I think AliExpress will be your best bet.
SoccerBallPenguin@reddit
How small? 11.6" portable monitors are easy to find online
