Has anyone spent significant more on their PC for a certain aesthetic?

So, I’m wanting to put together a PC but it has to be a mini itx, which significantly narrows down my options, not only that but I decided on an all white-clean aesthetic, which significantly narrows down my options even more. The market for white themed mini itx components is small and the options that exist are significantly more expensive. Anyways, I put together this PC which comes out to around $2k but only had a 9700x/78003xd and a 7800xt. Some people say this is a waste of money but honestly, I feel like the theme makes it worth it IMO. Honest thoughts?

AmoebaMan@reddit
For most people the PC is a tool, and its purpose is to do…well, whatever you want it to do. Looking nice is secondary or lower.
Form follows function, IMO.
RyuGTX@reddit
I spent significantly more than I should have on an custom water cooled ITX build. Personally, I felt accomplished and love the look. I hardly pay attention to it now. If I could go back in time, I would build something in a larger case for convenience, cooling performance, and lower noise
CtrlAltDesolate@reddit
Yes but I'd already decided what parts I wanted (ie. didn't compromise on performance for what I needed whatsoever).
Think combined, the white AIO, GPU, fans, ram and case cost around $200 more than if I'd got the black versions - cheated with the PSU by getting extensions, as can't see it inside the AP201 anyway.
For my applications, there'd be no need to go above a R9 7900, 64gm ram and 7900xt before anyone chimes in with "BuuT I CouLd HaVe gOT beTtEr..."
Virtual-Ability-2129@reddit
Sure. The hell with function, I want form (I'm antiBauhaus)
NewestAccount2023@reddit
Nope. If target have a 4090 that's 30% faster than a 4080 than to have all white components with a 4080. I play games , not stare at my computer. Sure it can be a centerpiece of your room, if that's worth it to you then go for it, personally I want high fps at max settings instead of a case that's so pretty I can set it in the middle of the living room for all guests to marvel over like artwork
Malphael@reddit
Dude you are not saving that much money by going with black over white components. White components are maybe like a 10% upcharge. Meanwhile the RTX4090 is nearly twice the price of a 4080 Super
Virtual-Ability-2129@reddit
yeah good logic poor example
Dismal_Hedgehog9616@reddit
Bruh you can buy a white 4090 for only 2k. J/k. Watch some PcBuilder on YouTube and that guy has boost my build videos. If you can cut 10% on your parts it’ll add up fast and you can up your GPU. I’d go with a 7600 CPU, and upgrade my CPU at a later time. It makes more sense to spend the most on your GPU as it’s your highest cost to upgrade.
Malphael@reddit
You can't cut 10% off your build to make up for like an $800 difference in GPU price.
Dismal_Hedgehog9616@reddit
I wasn’t saying go up to a 4090 but to buy as much GPU as possible. He has a 7800 now he might could go up to a 7900xt. I was also saying get just as much CPU as you need (if it’s just gaming).
ArcticWaffle357@reddit
but muh 4090 /s
Malphael@reddit
Dude, what's so hard about this, by using the exact same parts but removing all the RGB and having it be black instead of white, I only need to come up with an additional...
Checks PC Parts Picker
...$636.07 to afford the cheapest 4090
EzraTheMage@reddit
Lmao, that's a huge saving
Malphael@reddit
Lol, dude you misunderstood. It's 636 Extra, not savings
Going from white w/RGB to black saved me:
$20 on an AIO $10 on a mono $4 on Ram $10 on a Case
A whole whopping $44.
SupFlynn@reddit
I have paid 100usd more for a case instead of that i easily could have got a 1tb ssd.
Cryostatica@reddit
I have, in fact, spent inordinate amounts of money on PC aesthetics.
Some people just find no value in art. I’m not one of those people.
Donnietentoes@reddit
Built a really expensive PC and insisted on it being all white. Got what I wanted, but as I grew up realized how impractical it is with these prices. Save yourself the money and just make a lowkey pc build. You'll be able to spend more money on your desk and peripherals. I genuinely believe the glass panels are lowkey a scheme to sell more shenanigans. It was viable during earlier years, but when a GPU is costing 88% of the budget and all of them are looking ugly as all hell, no.
Unrelated, but the designers were not cooking with the 40 series cards aesthetically.
ImStuckInTheNineties@reddit
It’s RGB with gaming components not the other way around
AsadoAvacado@reddit
I can relate. When I built my current PC, I wanted 3 things:
-Massive aluminum chassis in grey color -CPU/GPU with the highest power draw possible -High-power, long lasting fans
I ended up with a 12900k/3090ti combo, inside a Phanteks Enthoo Elite supertower, completely lined with 140 noctua ippc fans. I could have settled for a 3080/12500 combo inside a Fractal define 7, but I refused to settle.
Not one regret tbh. My PC does sound like an airplane turbine everytime it runs, but that's what makes it worth it.
Erianzel@reddit
I've been paying the white components and rgb tax for a while. Part of me still wishes I went for an all black, no rgb or tempered side glass panel, since they're just less of a hassle to build and maintain.
SuperColossl@reddit
I hear you dude, I went with a nice white box with tempered side panel, white bezel ring fans (argb x11!), and all black parts. The contrast works with or without any lighting combo on and without paying the white-tax on parts. Need a new gpu now… and maybe rotate it 90 degrees
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
I am upgrading from my old i5 7400/RX480 8gb, 16gb 2133mhz ddr4 build. It’s made up of a bunch of non-proprietary parts as my goal was best possible price/performance. The PC itself has always been a bit of an eye sore. I believe that is why I’m putting a lot of emphasis on looks this time. Also cost isn’t as much of an issue as it was when I was 15 lmao
Erianzel@reddit
Hey if you want an aesthetic build, don't let anyone tell you otherwise I say.
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
That’s a fair take. Thanks!
MammaStringbean@reddit
There’s people on both sides. I take a similar stance to you - my pc is up on my desk and i think it’s a statement piece, so i wanted to make it look really nice and enjoyable to look at. Totally worth the extra money imo, but some people don’t care at all and can save some money. Nothing is wrong it’s all just personal opinion
Dysan27@reddit
Yes people have.
I never would, mostly because appearance doesn't matter to me.
As you have said the markets for those are smaller limiting your choices.
So if appearance matter thst much then yes go ahead and spend the money on it.
I would rather out my money onthe performance specs, as that's what I would notice more.
AcidBuuurn@reddit
No. From the outside my computer is a black box with no real discerning features. If you look straight down through the mesh you can see some lights on the motherboard, but that's about it.
Bread-fi@reddit
I spent a little more on a nice case to replace the one I'd been using for nearly 20 years, because I'll likely use it for a long time again. I don't care much about the insides, prefer windowless.
responds-with-tealc@reddit
hell no. i bought a huge Fractal full tower 12 years ago. its black, it has lots of good fan options, it has more space than ill ever need, its sturdy all steel construction.
my only goal buying that case was to make sure i never had to buy one again.
DamionThrakos@reddit
I went in looking to build a new PC and saw that the store had a single 4080 Noctua Edition and went all in on the aesthetic. Fractal North case with the wood trim, all Noctua fans and cooler, and zero RGB. It's surprising how finding RAM without RGB is nearly impossible nowadays.
barrel_of_fun1@reddit
Alot of your money isn't even being wasted on anesthetics you're just buying the highest priced things. There's plenty of white PSU that are cheaper same with the ssd and ram
xstangx@reddit
I go performance first, then aesthetics if I can afford it. Luckily airflow, low heat, and good looking cases kinda work together. I’m not a fan of the small PC’s for gaming, strictly due to airflow purposes, but they do look cool! Perhaps due to me feeling claustrophobic for the hardware lol. Back to the question though, it depends on what you like! If you could somehow save enough for upgrades by using normal sized parts and no RGB then maybe, but I doubt that’s the case.
Narissis@reddit
I definitely have.
As an example, I bought a Hale90 V2 PSU in 2013 when a much cheaper unit would've been sufficient, because I was building in a Define R3 and wanted to play up the black-and-white contrast (the Hale90 V2 was white with a black stripe).
w00tabaga@reddit
I’m sort of a hybrid in this… I mainly go for performance and practicality, but I will spend an extra $15 on a couple components if it fits better aesthetically.
But to answer your question, I have never put together a build with aesthetics being one of the main priorities.
donkey_loves_dragons@reddit
No
SirThunderDump@reddit
I did on my previous PC. I wanted that one on my desk 24/7, looking pretty.
Then I had kids, and a pretty computer case was a nuisance. So for my next machine, plain looking black/grey, no glass side panel. Total stealth build.
Found that I’m way happier with the stealth build than I ever was with all the fancy crap I had with the clear case (rgb, custom loop, the whole shebang).
vaurapung@reddit
Go micro atx and you can get a sonic themed white mobo.
SeafoodDuder@reddit
I plan on building in December, I want something small and portable with a fan on the front for a custom fan grill because I want a lucky clover.
I'd also like a normal sized PSU, so I don't have to pay an extra $50-ish for a SFX (much smaller) one.
Trying to specialized build on a budget and it's tough. I have it narrowed down to a few classes:
-Jonsbo C6, but the front fan is kind of blocked by two bars at the top/bottom of the fan so I wouldn't be able to see 100% of the fan.
-Thermaltake Core V1, but I'm not sure how I feel about it and it uses a 200mm front fan, so a bigger DIY.
-Silverstone SG05 Lite, but it's an older case and it's got that 'crosshair' on the front fan. I just want something clear.
Might have to spend more, like you.
DeathRabit86@reddit
Hm.. still worse than my 10+ years old cooler master haf xb evo ;)
RayOronoz@reddit
rgb components it's the only thing I spent more on.. Lian Li cables and expensive if you think about it but it was worth for me
Bagera84@reddit
The first pc I build myself I went crazy on RGB. Case, fans, ram, mobo had some. Connected RGB strips that went trough my entire room. Now I have 0 rgb.
Bowserbob1979@reddit
Back when I had a friend to build a computer for me because he wanted to practice, he chose a different part because it made my total price go up to $1,337. The only difference between the other part which was slightly cheaper was that it had a blue accent. It wasn't significant, but my friend's choice was aesthetic only because it made the price different.
HonchosRevenge@reddit
Kinda, built a new pc for my gf in July, went about $300-$400 more than I needed to just to make sure everything was the same shade of pink and had LED. It was worth it tbh
reckless150681@reddit
Yup I've definitely wasted money for aesthetics. Iqunix ZX1 was 280 when I bought it, could've totally bought an NR200 for cheaper and it prob would've performed better - but I really enjoyed how the ZX1 looks.
Nothing wrong with spending more on looks. People buy art pieces and decorations. Is any of that "practical"? No. Does it make people happy? Yes.
So as long as you recognize that you're spending money basically on decorations and as long as you're okay with that, there's no problem here
CockroachCommon2077@reddit
Yep. Got 64 gb of DDR4 ram for I believe over $450 or something like that. I spent quite a shit ton on it. Why exactly? Because of crystal RBG ram sticks lol.
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
Damn!! Lol and people are calling me crazy for picking 64gb for $300!
CockroachCommon2077@reddit
Probably because 1% of people with DDR5 will need 64 gb all the time lol
Naus1987@reddit
I remodelled my house recently, and it's amazing how many things in life cost extra if you want it to look great.
But here's my opinion. Function wins out for me everytime. IF I had to choose between a non-nvidia card and a 4090 -- I would pick the 4090 Everytime.
However, if I had to choose between an ugly 4090 and a pretty 4090 that cost 500 dollars more. I could justify spending the 500 bucks.
I can spend money to make something look cooler. But I will not take a performance hit to make something look cooler.
This is basically the whole reason I ripped my house apart and renovated it. Like who designed this shit? I want my house to work for my lifestyle. Not having random ass walls and weird doors. Of course I want it to look great too, but it still has to function first.
keep in mind that for a lot of computer parts, you can actually remove the plastic parts and paint them. If you want a white monitor, you can take it apart, paint the frame and put it back together. Get some quality spray and it won't even look DIY.
Of course there's some skill that goes into that. And the alternative to skill is throwing money at it. Ya get to choose.
fliesenschieber@reddit
If it's your hobby, then it's not a waste of money. Others play golf, ride horses, buy expensive mods for their cars, and whatnot. If it's a hobby, then it brings you joy and in that case it's ok to "waste" a little bit of money. In the end, that's what you work for and that's what life is about. Have fun with your money!
GimmickMusik1@reddit
Yes. Case and pretty fans… they add up quickly.
Gregbot3000@reddit
Spent over 300 bucks on those Corsair QL fans.
grubnenah@reddit
I usually end up spending extra to fit everything into a small profile. Both my server and gaming pc are smaller form factors.
Little-Equinox@reddit
Not for aesthetics, only for performance
Taterthotuwu91@reddit
I like the little lights :3
Naturalhighz@reddit
I mean getting a vert mount certainly made mine a lot more expensive than it had to be. also meant I had to use an aio since the gpu blocks the space an air cooler would occupy.
RoboModeTrip@reddit
Why spend the extra money to mount your GPY vertically when it cost nothing to turn your case on it's side?
Naturalhighz@reddit
because I'm not a savage and I'm not broke
Zoenobium@reddit
I got a specific case variant that is set up specifically for vertically mounting the GPU. I also had to buy a newer riser cable for it and I paid extra for the specific GPU I wanted for the looks... Also to make the cooling work I had to get an AIO in the end. I probably paid like 200 bucks extra for the aesthetics and I have my desktop PC sitting under my desk. I do however adore the look of it every time I start it up or just happen to look at it. That was money well spent.

mechcity22@reddit
Not me
Yauchout@reddit
Significantly no but more yes of course I guess it also depends on what you define as significant
Mrcod1997@reddit
I actually ended up disabling most of the rgb in my pc. I found it distracting from my gaming experience.
Line_Deep@reddit
I have an all black build, no rgb - yes, aesthetics really matter to me. My current gpu - a Zotac 3060 - is grey, like so many "black" gpu's.
I want a 3 fan matt BLACK nvidia gpu with no rgb. This seriously limits my options. I would pay more to get exactly what i want, but its looking more likely that I'm going to have to spray paint something, which puts me off upgrading
RelotZealot@reddit
Black noctua fans for a case that can hold so many fans. But it's a beast and I wouldn't change it. Aesthetically for me it's perfect
thatburghfan@reddit
I never cared about what my PC looked like but it's your money, make it what you want!
Lemon_Scented_Lube@reddit
You could keep the white theme going and get better performing components by saving in some areas, that Corsair AIO is a bit expensive for what it is, the RAM is likely faster than it needs to be you can get 64GB of white Corsair RAM DDR5-6000 CL30 for $80 less and it has slightly slower frequency but better timings. The ASUS PSU is $240 but you can get the Lian Li 850W one for $140.
This is still a white theme with a X3D chip and a 7900XT for 50 dollars less.

Well I’ll be damned. You might just have built my PC for me lol. Thanks
GingaNinja54@reddit
The Thermalright AIO is an outrageous deal for the price and worth the savings. Not the absolute prettiest water cooler, but does look nice and seems to have decent performance.
mrmoerkel@reddit
This is a way better balanced build!
Overall-Tailor8949@reddit
Three questions for you.
Can you easily afford the price difference between this build and a more "normal" one?
Does this build make you happy even with the limits you've mentioned?
Can you live with the likelihood that upgrades are probably going to damage the aesthetic?
If the answer to all 3 is yes then go for it!
That said it isn't one that I would build even if I (or my wife) wanted an all white system.
TheChoosenWeeb@reddit
Holy shit and i thought i spend a premium on aesthetics. $300 for 64gb? Even the premium option that i chose (gskill royal) is at $216 for 64gb. $240 for a 850w psu when my 1200w white psu (touchpower gf3 snow) is $200. You dont really need the 990 pro unless youre using the pc with professional purposes where the high speed has actual performance impact. Personally i would avoid corsair products i have read some horror stories regarding their rgb software iCue. I wonder why you chose the 9700x
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
I chose the 9700x originally because I figured it’s lowered TDP would make it a better option.. but I just learned it often uses more power than a 78003XD in gaming so… 3XD it is!
TheChoosenWeeb@reddit
Wait a minute stuttering could be caused from a mirage of issues: drivers, gpu-cpu bottlenecks, game optimization, background softwares, malware, file corruption, and probably more. Unless you bought your ram and ssd off of Timmy in the corner street or temu, i doubt your ram and ssd was your issue.
TheChoosenWeeb@reddit
Ok i understand. Just remember to see if the case and gpu has enough clearance for the ram and cooler.
Acrylic_Starshine@reddit
I went for the 7800xt nitro mainly because of the light bar which i fell in love with.. just turns out sapphire is a great manufacturer anyway and it runs cool.
Gambler_720@reddit
Well it's not "significant" but I once bought an mATX board and immediately regretted how tiny it looked inside my case. So I sold it and bought an ATX case for no reason other than the look.
RecalcitrantBeagle@reddit
That's why I generally prefer mATX cases, you can use the cheaper boards without it looking weirdly hollow.
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
Lol. I did that with my first PC build back in 2016.. bought a micro atx motherboard and put it in a full tower. Looked awful. Having learned from that mistake, my motherboard and case will compliment each other nicely in this tiny case.
RecalcitrantBeagle@reddit
My aesthetic for personal builds trends towards the black unassuming box category, so not really - unless you count size. The nice part about having a solid side panel (I have a Meshify C with one) is that I really don't need to care about matching anything. RGB RAM on a fire sale cheaper than regular black for some reason? Sure, I can throw it in there. Thermalright Frost Spirit with grey fans for a few bucks cheaper than the blackout or white version? I can't see it.
I'm not opposed to having aesthetically flashy or unified builds, I've certainly done those builds before (pro-tip, white GPUs are expensive, white spray paint is not) but I just don't personally get anything out of them - they're cool when finished, then I stop looking at my PC and stare hollow-eyed at an FPS counter instead.
mrmoerkel@reddit
What is your use case for the pc? If it is for gaming it seems very unbalanced. Ditch the 64gb dominator platinum and go for a cheaper white ram kit with 32gb of ram. Scale down your cpu to a ryzen 5 7600 and go for an rx 7900xt(x).
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
I’ll end up doing some light video editing (GoPro clips mainly) and some light-medium gaming. I play PC exclusives mainly, games like total war, eu4, hoi4, and other point and click strategy games. The most demanding game I play right now only recommends a 1660ti/RX5600XT (Total war warhammer 3) so I figured this PC would be fine at 1440p
bobsim1@reddit
My dark base 900 Pro case. And my mini ITX build.
Diedericker@reddit
Yeah, quite a bit. That's kinds the issue for me, when I didn't set a budget for myself.
Waveshaper21@reddit
The opposite, I went with Fractal Design Pop Air (black, no rgb) over North (wooden front panel decoration) because my parts went over my budget I kept increasing. So I had to cut off unnecessary costs and went with Pop Air. No regrets.
PossibilityOk782@reddit
In my ideal world the hardware would be built into a wall of somthing so I never had to look at it. my brain can not comprehend purchasing a machine that is less efficient or functional to look at it
Tapil@reddit
Case pick, and fan colors, and if i wasnt so paranoid of cable mod - id have different color cables
wordfool@reddit
I bought a Fractal North black case because I liked the way it looked (ie. not like some bland tower PC from Walmart or an incel teenager's RGB wet dream). But how the stuff inside looks I really don't care because I won't ever see it through the mesh siding under my desk.
thebradlambert@reddit
Are you even going to see most of the components with mini ITX? I totally understand the all-white aesthetic for regular sized builds, but the case you have obscures most of the innards...
Dr_Passmore@reddit
Normally this comes down to the case. I personally enjoy small case designs, but this limits the potential components with often increased cost. Also I end up spending more on the case.
IAdklane@reddit
Yep - mine was all ProArt as much as possible - love it. Had to compromise on the GPU because they don’t make a 4090 ProArt though.
Krejcimir@reddit
Nope.
SenseiBonsai@reddit
The all white builds me and my wife made, it looks nice tho
FattyGuyRiley@reddit
Every pc I built for my work I’ve modified the case in some way. The last one I designed and had the shop build a partition and also house a basically useless extra screen so I could section off the aio radiator from the rest of the build. Time and materials just for that part was probably a couple hundred dollars. Plus the cost of the extra fans and lcd screen. But to me the cool factor was worth it and it’s mini flex when customers come into our department. I also made a custom front panel that I didn’t end up using because it felt like it was starting to get a bit too much. But it looks cool so I just put in on the wall behind me.
damien24101982@reddit
Waste imho.
bladerunnercyber@reddit
I went small, so I got a mini razer case. I then realised that I couldnt fit the powersupply inside it, (standard one), so had to get a mini powersupply and a mini motherboard.. Finding gpus hasnt been too difficult, but for space reasons, smaller the better. The Aesthetic i was going for was "tiny", and it certainly looks the part. Cost a bit more, but it is really nice little setup. I always wanted to build a mini pc.
catchthemagicdragon@reddit
You look at your monitor when you’re on your PC, not the case. A silly premium that’s shine will wear off within 6 months. Form factor for practicality is another thing though. The SSD choice seems unnecessary, the 64gb of ram but with a 7800XT makes it seem like this isn’t a productivity rig and unnecessary, that PSU is ridiculous.
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
Do you know anything about lian li? Their PSUs are quite literally some of the only alternatives to this PSU that fits the theme.
Majortom_67@reddit
A nice case
FischerMann1@reddit (OP)
I actually already bought the case, it looks amazing sitting on my desk. Can’t wait to buy the rest of the build.
Kilgarragh@reddit
I’m starting to think solid side panel is the best I can get.
Some components like good ram heatsinks, the Gtx 1000 founders edition cards(and the 2000’s and even 3000’s tbh) and the rx6000 reference cards or the old black and red(or green/gold if you’re lucky) Msi gaming x design look absolutely fabulous.
Most cases look really good too on their own. The big problem is that there will never be one standardized aesthetic that all components follow, so you can’t really get a consistent good look. Or I could save loads of money and just get a good case with a steel panel, then just spend what’s left over on food, or a monitor(the thing to actually look at)
fightingCookie0301@reddit
It may not be a desktop PC, but a Laptop. Got a Razer Blade 17 last year. Looks amazing, works amazing, but wasn’t worth the amount of money retrospectively…
