My brother in christ you don't dump a whole can on each piece of toast.
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Seemed like the thing to do but I didn't look up a recipe
ellisellisrocks@reddit
A recipe 😂😂😂😂
HeyCarpy@reddit
You will need:
1- 1 tin of beans
2- 2 slices bread
3- 1 can opener
torero15@reddit
wouldn’t it be a tin opener then?
Shiny_Snom@reddit
tin opener? you don't bite the lids off?!?
SadBit8663@reddit
God damn i wish i had your teeth, unless they're all fucked up from biting cans open, then I take it back.
TheLysdexicGentleman@reddit
If they are British, you don't want them.
TheEyeDontLie@reddit
Ive read studies that show British actually have better dental health on average thsb Americans.
They don't get as much cosmetic dentistry work done as Americans (especially historically).
However the have less cavities etc, because they don't eat bowls of sugar for breakfast then drink 2 liters of liquid sugar. They also have drinkable tap water (as long as it has teabag in it), and only 4 British people (total) believe that toothbrushes are a government conspiracy.
HEY_YOU_GUUUUUUYS@reddit
“I’m not gonna try and find sources” brotha you just shat out a useless couple paragraphs then
TheEyeDontLie@reddit
I ain't spending 20mins googling pubmed articles for something so unimportant, for studies published a decade ago. You can do it if you don't trust me.
HEY_YOU_GUUUUUUYS@reddit
I’m just trying to help you from rambling, no one cares without sources bud
UnchillBill@reddit

DavidCRolandCPL@reddit
That explains the teeth.
CosmicCreeperz@reddit
I was on a camping trip years ago and a friend of mine brought her intern coworker along. We stuck some beers in our pockets and went out wandering a bit, then realized no one brought an opener. The Irish intern said “no problem” and opened up 4 bottles with her teeth while we cringed. Heh, she was 19. That’s a lot of beer opening skill for a 19 year old.
Easy_Gas8983@reddit
I was picturing they open beans like Popeye opens spinach, while we're in the states using ar15s to open our beans.

afc74nl@reddit
I think we need a new size of bean can, half a can is not quite enough, a whole can too much.
OP, that still looks pretty tasty to me!
linerva@reddit
They actually have these little plastic pot multipacks in the UK for single person use. Can ve microwaved or warmed in a pan.
Excellent for after 13 hour shifts when you don't want to think about how old your half a can in the frudge is, I found.
UnchillBill@reddit
You can get the big plastic screw top jars of them as well for single people who really like beans
afc74nl@reddit
They are still only 200g I think? I think 300g is the sweetspot
notabigmelvillecrowd@reddit
When I lived in London there was a mini can of beans that was perfect for one serving. Definitely available from at least heinz, and sainsburys own brand.
Littleleicesterfoxy@reddit
Yes this is the size I always use for one slice - slightly smaller than the half tin.
inevitablethursday@reddit
I love how specific this measurement is and how true it is.
Spiritual-Software51@reddit
See I've started doing 3 slices tin and it's a great ratio but a lot more food than standard beans on toast.
Miasmata@reddit
That's the best way for when you want it as an easy dinner!
linerva@reddit
You can also use more if you want - but I agree that you definitely don't have to.

vikingsarecoolio@reddit

Jayandnightasmr@reddit
Like dumping a spoonful of marmite in your mouth and saying it tastes bad.
enomisyeh@reddit
Yes! Every time other people try Vegemite they absolutely slather it on the toast! 'no, not that much you idiot!' Im from New Zealand and we had american homestay students stay at a friends house and they tried our Marmite (its stronger than Vegemite and shiny, vegemite is like matte in colour) and they dug a spoon in until i stopped them from basically killing themselves with it.
No-Advice-6040@reddit
Preach it cuz! Should be able to see the butter through the Marmite, that's how thin it should be. A jar should last a family MONTHS
TinyPirate@reddit
And the butter should be HALF melted. Not fully melted, not firm, HALF. Takes a kiwi half a lifetime to master the technique
No-Advice-6040@reddit
Yes yes. If the butter is not applied to the toast within 10 seconds of it popping, you may as well throw it out. Nothing worse than making some vile Marmite cream with unmelted butter
TinyPirate@reddit
I'm kinda in the cream end of the butter-marmite spectrum. I don't like it if the butter is melted into the toast. No good.
Worried_Height_5346@reddit
I'm sure this disgusting paste that you have to carefully apply tastes great in your mind but I highly doubt that's the reason most people from other places don't like it.
We only get it in specialty stores and I tasted it at a friend's house who swears by it.. it's probably something you either start eating when you're young or never.
Appycake@reddit
Your mistake was tasting it by itself.
Worried_Height_5346@reddit
It was on bread. No it really tastes like shit to me. You could probably dunk it honey and smear it on a cake and it would still be the most obnoxiously overwhelming thing I taste.
Appycake@reddit
We're pretty finicky with how it's eaten, so you probably didn't eat it properly haha. Doesn't matter though, if it's not for you, all good.
Cassitastrophe@reddit
I'm American, and I grew up hearing about Vegemite very rarely, and when it came up in movies or TV, it was always portrayed as some noxious tar that only maniacs and idiots would enjoy. About 10 years ago an aussie friend of mine sent me a jar, along with instructions on how to actually eat it, and I'm happy to report it's actually pretty great when used properly. Ever since I've had a habit of occasionally importing a few jars of it when I've got some spare cash, it's been several years and I'm craving some now.
Accomplished-Ad-2612@reddit
It also makes a great umami flavor boost to soups and stews. If I'm having it on toast, I usually melt shredded cheese on top, and it's so tasty.
Pandelein@reddit
Add it to gravy next time you make a roast, it boosts that flavour like nothing else! Also, meat pies- though really that’s just putting it in gravy again.
Theron3206@reddit
Or just add msg... It will do basically the same thing. Vegimite is basically yeast extract with extra salt and vitamins. It's a waste product from beer making.
Pandelein@reddit
I’m telling Paul Kelly on you! That is sacrilege!
innominateartery@reddit
“Hydrolyzed yeast extract” is also what embarrassed food manufacturers call msg when they don’t want to put msg on the label.
Theron3206@reddit
It's not exactly the same thing, msg is more pure. But yeah the effect is the same.
roboticlee@reddit

DanJDare@reddit
Well we've just solved the pavlova debate. Marmite is british ya thieving kiwi.
Few-Comparison5689@reddit
My (Brit) Aunt has a notice in her B&B for tourists regarding the marmite. It advises people to try it, but if they've never tried it before putting on a layer of marmite that is "wafer thin" may still be too much. Hasn't in any way stopped people from other countries from spreading it on an inch thick.
GregAbbottsTinyPenis@reddit
What’s it taste like? Both a proper sized serving and overload?
Orkran@reddit
Umami AF.
Seriously salty. Like, aspects of hoi sin/Worcestershire/A1 sauce or mushrooms but dialled up to 11, and gooey so it blends great with melted butter.

Grandfunk14@reddit
Or English mustard(like Colman's). People think "oh its just regular yellow mustard" and put the usual amount on the there. I put a lot on mine because I like it, but the average American will think its terrible because they over used it starting off.

Hats off to you for trying
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Thank you. The first step of succeeding is trying
Knot_a_porn_acct@reddit
So you think American beans are spicy?
reidybobeidy89@reddit
Did you come to that conclusion from me saying disgustingly sweet? Do you think Sweet n Spicy are the same?
Knot_a_porn_acct@reddit
Nah, but you seem British so I’m assuming you have bland taste and everything including sweet things are spicy for you. If you’re not British, my apologies.
reidybobeidy89@reddit
Sorry to disappoint- I’m not British. You’ll have to dislike me for another reason.
Knot_a_porn_acct@reddit
I never said I disliked you, just thought you probably had terrible tastes.
Visible_Sun_6231@reddit
what?! Hienz is sweet, watery crap. Greeks and turks know how to make actual savoury beans like this https://www.thevegspace.co.uk/recipe-quick-easy-tomato-and-herb-gigantes-beans/
you must have a sweet tooth if you think hienz is savoury.
reidybobeidy89@reddit
I don’t eat Heinz. Where did I say I did?
wSkkHRZQy24K17buSceB@reddit
Heinz are the canonical British baked beans
reidybobeidy89@reddit
They are indeed. I don’t like them though and never eat them.
codmode@reddit
Everything is weird in US, beans are too sweet, pickles are too sour/salty. Wtf
CrappityCabbage@reddit
They're Polish-style pickles.
forestWitch8@reddit
you did it wrong...
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
I actually had no idea the Brits actually had a way to do this dish. I just assumed it was baked beans heated up and poured on toast
forestWitch8@reddit
Haha it’s all good. I’m not Brit but this is a staple meal for our house. Try some cheese and an over easy egg with it. Bacon on the side or crumbled on top. Sometimes I’ll use tots or French fries instead of toast.
Faithiepoo@reddit
Wrong beans, toast too floppy, no cheese, PAPER PLATE????
TheRenster500@reddit
Pretty much every American family i have come across, rich or poor, use paper plates!! It's madness.
bikemandan@reddit
How many American families have you come across?
TheRenster500@reddit
I've had holiday functions at about 6 different homes through my travels there, but also just pretty much anyone's apartment/home for a regular meal. These places have all been in Arizona, Texas, Florida and Georgia!
People in Washington and California always used real plates with me!
negligentlytortious@reddit
It’s because you were there for holiday functions or visiting. When we have company, the name of the game is convenience so we can spend more time with our guests and less time doing dishes. Costco selling 300 plates for $15 is also a big help.
bikemandan@reddit
Interesting. I want to see a heat map overview now of paper plate usage. I didnt realize it was so widespread. Ive lived my whole life in California and would never consider using paper. Lines up with your experience apparently
Warm_Badger505@reddit
WTF? Paper plates? What sort of deviant nation eats every meal from a paper plate?
Sir_Monkleton@reddit
What sort of deviant nation eats beans on toast as an adequate meal
Warm_Badger505@reddit
Not enough corn syrup for you? It's a quick tasty lunchtime meal.
Zerkron@reddit
Why would you want to wash more dishes, I always use paper plates
Warm_Badger505@reddit
Literally the laziest, most environmentally unfriendly, uneconomical thing I have ever heard. It takes seconds to wash a plate. Even less of a hassle if you have a dishwasher. Only time I have ever used a paper plate is at a kids party.
TheRenster500@reddit
Christmas dinner! 30 people, and they handed out paper plates! It was in the name of convenience, and i suppose i get it, but it was a super nice house, and they even had a maid! 🤷♂️
mikettedaydreamer@reddit
That seems normal. Who has 30 porcelain plates anyway?
But every day new paper plates? What a gigantic waste
TheRenster500@reddit
Yea for that large gathering, sure. But they also did it during any size dinner they had. Which was usually like 10
mikettedaydreamer@reddit
That’s still just 10 plates instead of 700 every year if one person eats off of those 2 meals a day.
Warm_Badger505@reddit
I mean okay if I had 30 people round for Xmas dinner I might consider paper plates as well but I don't have maid money.
Agitated-Mechanic602@reddit
the kind that hates doing dishes. id use paper pots if they didn’t catch fire
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
I hate dishes and planet earth
kadkadkad@reddit
Do you really use paper plates for every meal? Wtf? It takes 5 seconds to wash a plate...
kneesmadeofcheese@reddit
Every single person on my husband's side of the family uses paper plates for every single meal and snack, because they can't be bothered to wash dishes, ever. They own plastic plates but those are only used as a support system for the paper plate. It's so fucking trashy.
FATBEANZ@reddit
I grew up with paper plates bc step father hated doing dishes. And plastic cutlery.
Agitated-Mechanic602@reddit
i’m diehard for plastic cutlery bc i have a bad habit of absentmindedly throwing silverware out n i don’t even realize it until i’m down to 2 forks and 1 spoon
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Fine I'll fuckin stop using them.
iamnotawallaby@reddit

What kind of beans are those? Colour looks off.
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Store brand baked beans
Anna_Namoose@reddit
Dude... Go to the import aisle of the grocery store and buy the Heinz Beanz in tomato sauce from there. They don't use the baked beans we use. It's actually really good
Throwaway74829947@reddit
Or you can just use Van Camp's or even Walmart brand Pork & Beans in Tomato Sauce. Basically the same product as British baked beans and far cheaper than imported Beanz.
Anna_Namoose@reddit
I hadn't thought to try those brands as replacements. Guess they're going on the grocery list. Thanks for the tip, I'll report back.
Throwaway74829947@reddit
Honestly, IMO the Walmart brand is better than the Van Camp's, but I included Van Camp's since not everyone shops at Walmart.
JustASeabass@reddit
None of my grocery stores sell Heinz beans.
Throwaway74829947@reddit
Walmart brand Pork & Beans in Tomato Sauce are basically the same product as Heinz Beanz.
Anna_Namoose@reddit
Amazon has them also
Knappsterbot@reddit
American baked beans are different from what the Brits use, less sweet and more tomato. You can get Heinz beans in the international section of the grocery store usually, or in a pinch I'll use Bush's homestyle and add tomato paste
snapper1971@reddit
I think the colour is also being thrown by the combination of artificial light and the daylight. That mix of yellow and blue light can make some colours look muddy in mobile phone pictures.

omniwrench-@reddit
These beans are brown as hell compared to the orangey-tomatoey goodness of Heinz
Source: British
UnchillBill@reddit
If you were really British you’d know Branstons beans are where it’s at.
snapper1971@reddit
Branston are minging.
omniwrench-@reddit
I said Heinz because it’s the original for a lot of Brits
I have Bramwells (Aldi beans) cos they’re just as good as any branded type, for a fraction of the cost
UnchillBill@reddit
Unfortunately I don’t have an Aldi near me so that’s not an option I have. I’m dubious that they come close to Branstons though.
Knappsterbot@reddit
They look just like any American baked beans
snapper1971@reddit
Ew.
ohrofl@reddit
Yeah they totally look like bushes baked beans.
siccoblue@reddit
Absolutely and I want some now with a burger
ohrofl@reddit
You gotta use ruffles wavy chips to scoop them into your mouth.
TrollMN@reddit
This is literally what I had for dinner. Burger, chips, baked beans.
Our other side was a mix of creamed corn and whole kernel corn, salt, pepper, garlic and threw it in the smoker.
Classic meal
CuriouslyImmense@reddit
I'm glad to see that my assumptions (not a photographer) were right about the light being the problem. I would have said it looked a bit washed out, but muddy is now a new term I will use!

They're the wrong beans.

Soaked_in_bleach24@reddit
I’m American and when I tried this used the Heinz curry beans and I also toasted my bread a bit longer than what it looks like OP has and that shit was delicious
Commercial-Height504@reddit
Stir in some chipotle paste into the normal Heinz beans for Homebase mean-beanz
Gowalkyourdogmods@reddit
Wait, were you out of the country when you bought those beans? I'm hoping you weren't because buying a can of curry beans here in the US sounds really promising.
Hot_Guidance_3686@reddit
They're actually really easy to make at home, just use any decent curry powder you can get at your supermarket. Fry off a bit of curry powder, turmeric, and chilli powder, then add a regular tin of baked beans with some chopped onions. Add a splash of water and cook til onions are softened. Tastes amazing every time.
Gowalkyourdogmods@reddit
Oh I'm sure. I used to work as a cook and while it's still one of my favorite hobbies, I have those days where we need to eat and I just don't want to have to even think about what I'm cooking, let alone tasting it and trying to get it exactly how I want. This is just for the pantry.
My gf constantly tells me I put way too much pressure on myself when I'm just cooking for us but I take pride in it and want it to be the best it can be but there are days where it's like "we're having hamburger helper stroganoff, take it or leave it" lol
Soaked_in_bleach24@reddit
They’re on Amazon, but I got them at Publix. I also haven’t seen them at Publix ever since
Gowalkyourdogmods@reddit
Thanks, I'm gonna order some to keep in the pantry.
Knappsterbot@reddit
You can get them online or specialty import shops but I've never seen them in regular grocery stores like classic Heinz
Gowalkyourdogmods@reddit
Yeah I've never seen them so was thinking/hoping to keep a better eye out when shopping.
paddyo@reddit
Curried beans are legit. Better to do it yourself than buy pre-curried though, add some hot peppers too yum yum
MysticalMummy@reddit
Yeah.. Also American, and I was gonna say that bread is lookin' kinda soggy, and that's way too much of the wrong kinda beans.
unsulliedbread@reddit
I also highly recommend the Heinz Chili beans. That shit is fucking delicious
Honey-Badger@reddit
Yeah sometimes we will put a bit of paprika or another spice onto baked beans if we're feeling fancy so I imagine its a similar thing to curry beans.
Clear-Inevitable-414@reddit
Just discovered the curry beans this year. It's my dinner choice.
overladenlederhosen@reddit
Once took the time to soak Haricots overnight, patiently skinned and de seeded tomatoes. Ground fresh Coriander, Cumin, Chilli, Tumeric. Cooked off Garlic, and Ginger, added a few sultanas for a bit of a Kashmiri twist. Lovingly took hours over something that ended up tasting exactly and i mean exactly like Heinz Curried bloody Beans.
Clear-Inevitable-414@reddit
Lol! I don't think your efforts were wasted, but Heinz is a good shortcut.
Knappsterbot@reddit
The curry beans rule
RunRunAndyRun@reddit
American bread is also much sweeter and I bet OP didn’t butter the toast either
Knappsterbot@reddit
Oh my god you guys we have tons of different breads in the US and very few are sweet at all
Awkward_Pangolin3254@reddit
All commercial sandwich bread in the US has added sugar. If you buy bread from the store bakery it's a different story but check your labels next time; they might surprise you.
Knappsterbot@reddit
Added sugar ≠ sweet. Not all commercial sandwich bread in the US has added sugar. That's a batshit insane claim. The Ireland ruling for Subway bread isn't applicable to all US bread, nor is their bread sweet.
brando_iconyc@reddit
American beans are rank. FAR too sweet for starters to the point of being sickly. And just too much ‘stuff’ in many of the varieties, like bits of bacon, onions, peppers etc. There is no need for it.
Knappsterbot@reddit
They're meant to go with grilled and smoked meat and they complement that perfectly. There are also endless options to pick from for what you prefer.
IllyriaCervarro@reddit
Ok but like I mean it also does taste good with American baked beans too, OP is a silly boi
Knappsterbot@reddit
Eh it's different, but y'know gimme a fat slice of Texas toast with baked beans and I'm happy too
Ok_Astronomer_8667@reddit
I prefer beans on toast with buschs, much much better than Heinz in my opinion. I prefer the smoky over the tomato
Knappsterbot@reddit
Mm beer and toast
No_Pear8383@reddit
I don’t know why, but this even sounds worse than that monstrosity up there. I would assume y’all have the proportions down to more of a science though.
Knappsterbot@reddit
I'm American, but proportions are whatever you want and the tomato sauce makes a big difference
CrustyToeLover@reddit
International? Heinz beans are with the rest of the beans, broski.
Knappsterbot@reddit
I guess it depends from store to store, it's in the international section of the stores around me
Throwaway74829947@reddit
Actually, what is effectively British-style baked beans is widely available in the US, just not under that name. The Van Camp's or Walmart brand Pork & Beans in Tomato Sauce is basically the same product as Heinz Beanz and far cheaper than what Heinz's beans cost in the US.
SignificantTransient@reddit

Berserk_Bass@reddit

Substantial-Eye-3802@reddit
I’m confused. Heinz is american
pickaberry@reddit
These particular beans are sold by Heinz, but only in the UK, starting in 1886.
nucumber@reddit
To be clear, I think this is meant to say that Brit baked beans are less sweet and have more tomato than American
American baked beans have several times the amount of sugar as British. Waaaaaay too sweet. (FWIW I'm American)
Nugginzz@reddit
I usually add a bit of Ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire, butter, and black pepper in a pot and warm them up. Heinz beans are awfully plain.
Rewdyroo@reddit
Lmao brother Heinz is American beans
Knappsterbot@reddit
Look up Heinz baked beans. They're an international company and they have products that aren't typically sold in the US.
Visible_Sun_6231@reddit
The american is right. Regardless of which beans you use, beans on toast is shit.
how so many people like sweet mushy beans on mushy bread is beyond me.
Knappsterbot@reddit
I'm also American, Brits use beans with a stronger tomato flavor that's less sweet and it's better with toast (or cheese toast)
triz___@reddit
Sweet?

Basileus867@reddit
Why are beans from an American company in the international section?
Knappsterbot@reddit

Kroger just has the Heinz beans on the same aisle with other beans!
Alternative-Ad-4977@reddit
Next time try Branston Baked Beans.
TrainsDontHunt@reddit
HEINZ!!!
Alternative-Ad-4977@reddit
They changed the recipe a few years back and are subpar now. Supermarket own brands are now pretty similar to them.
Plus they changed the design of the tin. They will no longer stack. They are now a danger in my food cupboard (open a door and a random tin falls out). I won’t buy them anymore.
TrainsDontHunt@reddit
I just checked and I have Bush's Original in the pantry
Alternative-Ad-4977@reddit
I have just looked up the ingredients to Bush’s. That does not compare the the Baked Beans in Britain. Branston has the second ingredient as tomatoes (38%). Bush appears to be beans in sugar and no tomatoes at all.
pewpewhadouken@reddit
ones in asia still seem to be original recipe..
JohnnyButtocks@reddit

This guy beans. Heinz is for kids, Branston is for grown ups.

Might start making my own chutney.
teeks@reddit
Branston pickle sucks? Thats crazy talk
mightypup1974@reddit
Have to say I’ve had Branston and was really unimpressed. They tasted slightly muddy. I’m still a Heinz enjoyer
BumbleBeezyPeasy@reddit
You need pork 'n' beans!!
CD274@reddit
If I make it from dried beans what's a good recipe?
Huge-Basket244@reddit
I use ketchup, tomato paste, tiny bit of sugar, garlic, onion or shallot, vinegar, salt.
Bit of corn starch slurry towards the end is optional, but I prefer to add it.
CD274@reddit
Thanks! Because I know it'll taste way better made from scratch
Huge-Basket244@reddit
Sort of yes and sort of no. (Just my personal opinion.)
Something about Heinz beans just slaps. I do home made more often than not, but sometimes you want the canned. The texture of the beans is a major part of it.
CD274@reddit
Ah ok I guess I need to track down and compare!
agoia@reddit
Yes! Pork and beans are much closer to British beans than our baked beans.
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)

Boston Baked Beans usually have molasses in them, which makes them very brown as opposed to more orangey. I agree American beans are sweeter but ... they'll still make a delicious, filling, hearty, AND cheap meal on buttered toast lol
HappyMeteor005@reddit
I figured you could stand to read it again after many people told you.
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Thank you! I did read the other comments but I didn't do anything unless somebody tells me at least three times
Healthy-Foundation70@reddit
Right?😂
They're just messing with you. There's no way the problem was the brand of beans.
Huge-Basket244@reddit
What? It's a huge difference. If you buy 'baked beans' in the US VS the UK you'll get VERY different products.
Like, even Heinz brand baked beans in the US are not the same as Heinz baked beans in the UK. You have to go to the international section to get the not-very-sweet tomato sauce ones.
WayDownUnder91@reddit
I always wondered why muricans hate baked beans until trying bushes that just taste of sugar and have 50% higher sugar content than heinz or other brands
Rodrat@reddit

Alternative-Ad-4977@reddit
Making the assumption that you are using high sugar American beans. The Beans in UK are very different.
KungFuGarbage@reddit
While you are correct in some aspects of your comment I just want to clarify, I think this person was under the assumption y’all eat Boston style baked beans on toast. Boston style baked beans have a completely different purpose and are often smokey with bacon and molasses.
The kind the brita use are typically with a tomato based sauce right?
agoia@reddit
Yes a tomato base like pork and beans
Rodrat@reddit
You can buy the imported UK beans at almost all grocery stores here in the US.
Not a fan of the ones I've had. Also not a fan of the canned US beans. Far too sweet. Which is a shame as true homemade baked beans are some of the gdliest foods around.
FerretMilking@reddit
They would be worse, no idea how you could say American baked beans on toast would be bad
paddyo@reddit
if you used american baked beans you basically poisoned yourself. Those are completely and utterly different, it is hard to describe just how different.

Estrellathestarfish@reddit
"Baked beans" are very different in the US unless you buy a British brand like Heinz.
enternationalist@reddit
Ah yes, from the well-known British town of *checks notes*... Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
smrandombullshit@reddit
Whatever the case, in the US we get Heinz baked beans imported.
JUYED-AWK-YACC@reddit
They have factories all over the world that make different local products, like American baked beans. Or British. It's not complicated.
enternationalist@reddit
Sure! But if we were to use that criteria in this context, then Coca-Cola is a "British brand" and Harley-Davidson is a "Brazilian brand". I'm not convinced that interpretation is really what OP was going for - particularly since they are talking about purchasing it in the US, meaning that it's being produced neither by a company based in the UK, nor a factory located in the UK.
I'm fairly sure what they meant was "British-style" beans, and that Heinz carries those beans, and just mistakenly said that Heinz itself was a British brand.
qalpi@reddit
Have you never had Mexican coca-cola dude?

FrotKnight@reddit

muddyshoes_throwaway@reddit

FrotKnight@reddit
No, but it does blur the lines a little. Obviously the company isn't based there, but if your dad comes home from the heinz factory and makes you some beans on toast you can be forgiven for calling heinz British.
PassiveMenis88M@reddit
So is Harley-Davidson a Brazilian company now?
gentlybeepingheart@reddit
Heinz is an American brand lol
tobotic@reddit
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinz_Baked_Beans "In 1886, Heinz Baked Beans were first sold at the Fortnum & Mason department store in London."
American company, but that particular product was first sold in the UK.
PassiveMenis88M@reddit
And nothing you wrote refutes the fact that it's an American company.
Sensitive_Yellow_121@reddit
They're all multinational, global food companies now.
Estrellathestarfish@reddit
A brand that makes British style baked beans. Buying just "baked beans" will get you something different that would be odd on toast.
linerva@reddit
Yup.
And even if you are in the UK, a lot of the supermarket own brand beans are nowhere near as tasty as Heinz or Branston etc.
The brand definitely matters.
TrumpsStarFish@reddit

Looks like you used the wrong kind of beans 😔
Serupta@reddit
Toast the bread, then add butter (plus other things like marmite or anything else you feel like) THEN put beans NEXT TO THE TOAST and add them as you wish to vary the consistency/sogginess of the bread AFTER its marinated in the butter that melts on top of it!
I_want_to_cum24@reddit
That’s the skin of it sure, but there’s getting the right beans, adding butter, putting cheddar, and honestly moderation. You have to have enough bread for your beans and vice versa. It shouldn’t pile, it should coat the toast.
Efficient_Steak_7568@reddit
It should pile a bit. One tin of beans, two slices of toast. Big plate so the beans don't overwhelm the toast
Cheese not necessary
Vaumer@reddit
It's half a tin for two slices. Unless it's the mini-tins
Hot_Guidance_3686@reddit
I'd say half a can for 2 toasts is sufficient, particularly as half a can is counted as a portion and 1 of your 5 a day.
I agree though that it should pile a bit, which is best achieved by cooking the beans on the hob to reduce it down to a thick and creamy mixture that will stay in place when put on toast.
And definitely cheese not necessary or required. Beans on toast is pretty much what it says on the tin.
Impeachcordial@reddit
Cheese and a fried egg or I riot
I_want_to_cum24@reddit
Not necessary, I agree. But it’s a beautiful little cherry on top
Efficient_Steak_7568@reddit
It should pile a bit. Basically one tin of beans and two slices of toast. Just need a big enough plate that the beans don't overwhelm the toast
Cheese isn't necessary
LocalFeature2902@reddit
There is no cheddar in og recepie. During World War 2 era food rationing, canned beans were declared an essential food item by the U.K.'s Ministry of Food. Bread was never rationed during the war, so that how it was made. Cheese was considered luxury back then.
VulcanHullo@reddit

In fairness to OP that is very nearly a Pheonix Night's style recipe.
Superhuzza@reddit
Don't worry, it's still pretty bland even when done "correctly". Same goes for jacket potato with beans...not that good.
StoxAway@reddit
The best way, in my opinion, is to hear the beans thoroughly until they're reduced to an almost refried bean texture.
Slash428@reddit
I keep seeing videos of British people waiting hours in line to get an overcooked potato with beans and tuna on it, acting like it's the best food of all time. I will never trust a British persons advice when it comes to cooking.
BaconNamedKevin@reddit
Well I'm not British, but I have had a shitload of British food and if that's truly what you think British food is you have chosen to only find the shitty food lol
Slash428@reddit
I haven't chosen to find anything lol, like I said I see videos pop up where they will form massive lines for a literal potato with tuna on it, and they rave about it. Which makes me seriously wonder how bad the other options are if that's considered a home run to them.

I’m from Mexico and grew up in the uk. I was on a bean based diet for my entire childhood. Beans on toast still slaps with a little onion and salsa inglesa.
EsotericSnail@reddit
Do you think maybe 150 years ago some British guy came back from Mexico with memories of delicious tostadas de frijoles, with maybe some pico de gallo or avocado or chipotles, and tried to recreate it with ingredients he could get in Blighty, and that’s how Beans on Toast was invented? Because I’m British and I enjoy beans on toast, but if that’s what he was trying to recreate, that’s really sad. And the fact that you can improve it by adding cheese and Tabasco kind of supports that theory.
CHALEDER@reddit
Tortillas aren't spongy and absorbent like bread is, I hate beans and toast but will eat refried beans on a tortilla all day long, and I'm whiter than sour cream.

It shouldn't be, the beans are in a liquid sauce, and the butter melts on the bread easily enough, but it's so, so dry.
paddyo@reddit
ok tell me you haven't actually had it then, because literally one of the challenges (which OP has failed) of beans on toast is to avoid the bread getting soggy. Dry my left nut.

I came in ready to throw hands but I'm gonna share my wisdom, not just for you but for all Americans wanting to try beans on toast.
Those are the wrong beans and that is the wrong bread.
British baked beans aren't the US version of baked beans, which are really just beans soaked in barbecue sauce, molasses, brown sugar, and corn syrup. They're in a tomato sauce instead - get pork and beans (note for Brits - those are not, as the name implies, those cans of baked beans with cocktail sausages inside.) For good beans on toast you want thick cut bread, that is too thin.
You also don't put that much on, your bean to bread ratio is embarrassing. Just mentally eyeballing, a quarter cup on each will probably be perfect.
Also, you're gonna eat it with a knife and fork. A paper plate is inappropriate, you are eating the Queen's lunch, not a hotdog at a drunken labor day cookout.

Trick in the U.S. is to use Pork and Beans instead of Baked Beans. "Baked Beans" in the U.K. isn't as sugary as the Baked Beans in the U.S.

American here who studied abroad in the UK for a year. Even when done right with the “right kind” of baked beans, it’s still not great. It’s baked beans on buttered toast. You can imagine what it tastes like. It’s not wonderful.

Honestly, that's how many beans I have on mine. I like my toast quite dark, with butter and a mature cheddar on the toast, then load's of beans on top. Then some buttered toast around the edges to stay crisp. Good for scooping beans onto and then there's the fully saturated slice underneath to look forward to.
I don't know if there's any difference in ingredients, but Heinz baked beans, Warburtons Toastie loaf, and a nice West country extra mature cheddar or red fox red leister for some extra tang. A quick squirt of ketchup in the beans and cook then down a bit, so they start getting a little bit broken and thicker sauce. Black pepper and scrambled eggs are also great accompaniments.

menty69@reddit
Too many beans there mate. What you do is use about a third of the beans then cover the left over can with tin foil and leave it in the fridge until the beans go bad. Don't over cook the toast, get loads of butter on it then add the heated beans and tuck in. Unfortunately for you that is the only food available in Britain apart from pigs guts mixed with dirt. We do have bacon though but we keep it secret!

The trouble is you’re not using the correct ingredients. American baked beans taste NOTHING like British ones. American bread has WAY more sugar in it. Toast good bread until golden (like a proper loaf, not that sliced crap) and butter it before putting some British beans on

That is not how you do cheesy beans on toast. You first toast the bread, cook up the beans with some cheese in a pot. Then you put on a light covering over the top of the toast with not too much of the juices so the bread doesn't become soggy. smh Try again mate!
DuskActual@reddit
The kind of beans is pretty important too from what I gather. You need the Heinz beans in tomato sauce

You see where the sauce is quite runny on the edge of the toast? The idea with beans is to cook them on a low-med heat and wait for the sauce to reduce and thicken. You want it gloopy. Also add some Worcestershire and cheese to it in last few minutes.

Fucksalotl@reddit
what a dummy you are
Cultural-Web991@reddit
Those beans are shit What brand are they? Best first us Brits is
Heinz HP Or Cross and Blackwell Each person has their favourites
Turd_Wrangler_Guy@reddit
I like to keep the toast separate (unless it's got cheese).
Then I used the toast like a little shovel to scoop up the beans and into my mouth.
lickmybowls2@reddit
I don’t think breakfast is their specialty
your_star_arr@reddit
Gotta make sure you had the right beans too
indignantfly@reddit
Toast the bread, cook and season (gasp!) the beans until the sauce is thick. Spoon 1/4-1/2 cup on the toast and top with an amount of cheese that makes you happy.
Ninja-Trix@reddit
And this is why people make fun of the British, because nobody can understand the simplicity of cooking an easy meal. It’s like using water instead of milk for Macaroni & Cheese and complaining it tastes like cardboard.
Okay, here’s what you do: - In a frying pan, cook a small amount of sausage, allowing the grease to coat the pan and breaking it up into tiny chunks. Cook normally. - Empty a can of beans (preferably pork beans, yes the type of bean affects the flavor) into the frying pan and cook on medium-low heat. Carefully stir the beans around so that they cook evenly and don’t burn. - You’ll know the beans are done when you can run the spoon down the middle and can see the pan. You basically just cook off the water so they have the right consistency. - You can have your bread toasting while the food cooks. When done, lightly butter. - Place toast open face onto a large plate and pour the sausage beans atop them.
There you go. It should be not only edible, but good.
paddyonelad@reddit
Message me for the perfect recipe. I beans on toast.
Hollowbody57@reddit
Wrong kind of beans and way too much of them, with what looks like Kraft singles, and it looks like you just waved your bread in the general direction of the toaster and called it good.
Blue tin Heinz beans, super sharp cheddar, and toast that's actually seen the inside of a toaster for more than a few seconds.
gromit1991@reddit
Beans on Toast is delight if done right. The basics are:
Decent thickness of bread 18-20mm (3/4"). Preferably not prevent sliced. Toasted close to the heat source so the outside crisps up but the inside stays softer.
Butter. Salted. Lots.
Good quality beans; Heinz for example.
As others have said get the proportions right one full tin is probably to much for two slices of toast.
Personally that's enough. But try adding other flavours in moderation once you've tried the basics.
Styggvard@reddit
My guy, you've used the wrong beans :(
Stormy_inateacup@reddit
did you butter the toast? What type of beans are those? Also, that's too many beans. Did you put Henderson's Relish on this? Also, even if you just put a whole tine of beans on 2 slices of dry toast, this is a good meal and you're wrong to question this.
geckograham@reddit
Is that a paper plate?
susanz99@reddit
That doesn't look good to me. I like beans but that's too much
irelephant_T_T@reddit
That's too much beans, and the toast doesn't look toasted enough
Worried-Cicada9836@reddit
why are they so dark
CharleyNobody@reddit
I like beans but I don’t like wet bread. I’ll cut up some hot dogs and throw them in a pot with beans. I’ll put some spicy mustard in the mix. But I wouldn’t put it on any kind of white bread. Maybe a chewy bread like ciabatta.
Discobitch79@reddit
needs Worcestershire sauce and cheddar cheese
jyc23@reddit
It helps if you’ve been indoctrinated since childhood. Probably too late for you.
Loa_Sandal@reddit
Beans are the worst part of a full English breakfast. Like, if you removed the beans from an English breakfast it would be significantly improved.
boblane3000@reddit
I feel like op is just trolling lol doing it wrong on purpose and playing dumb in comments
CYBER-MOON-BUTT@reddit
Must be Heinz, must have a lot of real butter, must have cheese, must grill cheese, must add Worcestershire sauce. This is like 20% there.
ForceStories19@reddit
Branston beans are a must, bit of salt & pepper, and a dash of Lea & Perrins.
Small lumps of cheddar cooked with the beans if you’re feeling fancy.
Don’t just be dumping a whole can of any old beans on the poor toast man..
Tarotdragoon@reddit
Ya gotta throw some salt, pepper and cheese on it too, personally I throw in some Cajun spice mix as well. Other acceptable options are BBQ sauce, sriracha, or if you're an animal, mayo or ranch.
Custer0108@reddit
BEANS ON TOAST!

hamme7@reddit

BeefInBlackBeanSauce@reddit
You need marmite on the toast. So bland otherwise.
Puzzled_Caregiver_46@reddit
You're supposed to sex it up with grated cheddar.
BobBobberly@reddit
Dear OP, you are r/BritishingWrong.
Lex8P@reddit
Needs cheese, Worcester sauce, paprika, garlic, onions, basil, parsley, whole grain mustard, ground coriander, ground cumin and thyme.
Then it tastes less of goop on toast.
Culunbego@reddit
Needs some HP Sauce on it.
Stu161@reddit
Hewlett-Packard is such a diverse brand.
completeidiot158@reddit
I'd usually have baked beans like. Butter the toast. Put the beans in a bowl with some black pepper, salt, 1 tsp butter, garlic powder. Microwave for 1-2 Min. Put on toast with grated cheddar ontop or an egg. Also probably like half a can for two slices of toast.
Senseofimpendingtomb@reddit
Mmmmmm dirty, cheesy, beany goodness.
crushbone_brothers@reddit
I love beans on toast, Grandma Brown’s used to be my go-to but I don’t think they make those anymore
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
RIP in peace to your grandma
crushbone_brothers@reddit
if you’re unaware, there used to be a brand of baked beans in NY/PA called ‘Grandma Brown’s Baked Beans’, that got discontinued a year or two into Covid. They were really rich and you could spread them out of the can almost, not terribly ‘liquidy’ and perfect on buttered toast :)
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
I'm sorry your grandma died from COVID. I hope she wrote down her beans recipe

pastrami_on_ass@reddit
They’ll claim it’s the brand of beans, it’s not, I tried it with their Heinz style they use and it’s still a shit meal/snack

pippitypoop@reddit

Preemptively_Extinct@reddit
Over beaned and under portioned toast.
To be fair, it's more of a raised with it good than "that is really good" good.
Barbz182@reddit
The absolute state of the that. Ruining our fine cuisine
Wasteland_Mohawk@reddit
Beans on toast is alright as a quick, easy meal but it's never gonna be amazing (unless you turn it into a fry up). Has some nostalgia going for it also if you had it growing up.
That bread is too thick. Personally I prefer the seeded brown loaves (not the end slices) or sourdough if it's on sale, with butter. The beans look a little odd, maybe the American ones are different to ours?
Grate some cheddar cheese onto it.
Use a real plate!
rycbar26@reddit
It’s missing the bangers. I’m going to store soon. Makes me want baked beans real bad.
ScepticOfEverything@reddit
Just throw a fried egg on top for a delicious British classic! Blech!
But at least they don't put tuna mayo (tuna salad) on baked potatoes. Oh wait...
Key-Control7348@reddit
As an American, I'm gonna go ahead and speak for the brits here.
You have to dip the whole thing in tea, beans n all.
Rubbish, anything else is, innit?
Expansive_Rope_1337@reddit
Did you make sure they're cold? Did you include vinegar and "curry" sauce?
Maybe let your teeth rot out first?

BSnorlax@reddit

SuckMyDickDrPhil@reddit
Hilarious how all the Brits in the comments try to tell the dude how the way he dumped fucking beans on a fucking toast is wrong and adding butter will somehow magically make it into a normal, edible meal.
jpowell180@reddit
Now, if they got several frankfurters and cut them up and mix them in the beans, you would have “franks and beans on toast”, that would definitely be several notches up from the plain beans on toast…
MrNagaDoubtfire@reddit
Too much beans and no cheese
forcedintothis-@reddit
In the 80s I went to a daycare in a very rural PNW town where they served this regularly. I’ve wondered for decades how these uber religious hillbillies knew about this meal.

Beans undercooked and sauce not reduced enough. No butter in your beans. Under toasted bread. Too many beans.
Fucking amateur.
StarWars_Viking@reddit
I'm not British, and I doubt I would enjoy this in any form, but it looks like you may have a tad too many beans on it.
Cautious_Solution712@reddit

kametoddler@reddit
British people are experienced in eating shitty food
eugene20@reddit
Toast the bread a bit longer than you usually would so it stays firmer longer.
Don't put the whole can on.
It will always be personal preference, or what you were brought up on, but Heinz do taste the best to me.
Some would add a dash of Worcestershire sauce and / or a fried egg.
User11223123@reddit
Terrible application and questionable beans, bread source and butter application, not to mention cooking time.
chris00ws6@reddit
My brother in Christ been trolling like a true shittyfoodporn champion and the Brits getting disturbed like a mofo in this thread.
vauxhall_ashtray@reddit
I think our beans have a bit more sugar and msg in than the American brands, makes them a lot more tasty. Also more butter on the toast, not margarine

cheeky_chilli@reddit
Branstons. That's all.
ElusiveDoodle@reddit
Never serve beans on toast on a paper plate. You will end up eating half the plate.
IAmTyrannosaur@reddit
Right so. Cook your Heinz beans (HEINZ) according to instructions. Make your toast, 2x slices. Add butter, which will melt nicely.
Don’t dump the beans on top of the toast. Take a slice of toast and carefully place a spoonful of beans on top then eat that bit, followed by another spoonful. In this way the toast remains crispy.
Cheese optional, use nice not gross cheese
CptCheesesticks81@reddit
I was raised on this and I still eat it fairly regularly. Heinz Deep Browned used to be the go-to, but they’re different now and not nearly as good. Nowadays, I stick with Sprague or Bush’s.
Oranges13@reddit
Toast + eggs over easy + beans (NOT THE WHOLE CAN!!)
CyriusGaming@reddit

Ew you can’t use the end of the bread… it’s too thick esp awful if not toasted and buttered properly! The beans do not look like Heinz…
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
I did and up putting Heinz ketchup on them at the end
Easy_Measurement_249@reddit
Just read your previous responses where you said if was American beans. Very different and you just can’t dump ketchup on! Yuck.
Nightingale1035@reddit
Farts n toast
No-Collection-8618@reddit
So, you failed to butter the toast and you didnt even have the common sense to get british beans, you suck
BitterNeedleworker66@reddit
Maybe too much bean to bread ratio. For some reason I think it’d be fire 🔥 if it was enough beans to pick up the bread like a taco
TheDon110@reddit
I love beans on toast, Im American and the rest of my family thinks its weird, but I find them pretty delightful
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
What is your recipe
TheDon110@reddit
Just two slices of toasted white bread with some bush’s baked beans haha, less beans than you for sure, I probably use around a 1/4 of a large can of beans per slice of toast
SoulParamedic@reddit
Cheese is good too
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Thank you
ellisellisrocks@reddit
Bro has to be trolling.
Goatmanification@reddit
WHY IS IT BROWN?!?!?!
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
It's beans and toast, two brown things
Goatmanification@reddit
The beans are meant to be in a red sauce 🥲
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Oh weird British people just keep getting weirder
Goatmanification@reddit
It's just tomato sauce, not (from your comments) the US sugary sweet BBQ sauce beans 🥲
Destructo-Bear@reddit (OP)
Okay dang I definitely used the wrong beans sauce
alphaxenox@reddit
You made those beans on toast 15 days ago when you posted this for the first time on this very sub. How long can you hold a grudge for beans on toast?
SaltyImagination3995@reddit
I had seen videos that so many people love this Heinz Beans, but i do think that the bread will get really soggy, am i right?
cmdrxander@reddit
Toasting the bread helps it maintain a bit of structure
SaltyImagination3995@reddit
I believe so, but also you need to add butter?
cmdrxander@reddit
Optional, for me
SaltyImagination3995@reddit
Good to know.

Yeah, it's a cheap, quick and filling thing that's at least got some token vegetable matter. Good for feeding kids quickly and for people to make when they're just starting to cook or want something simple to prepare.
It's a comforting and nostalgic thing for a lot of people, but anyone who claims it's genuinely delicious is probably not much of a foodie.
