What would you change first? i7 10700k or rtx 3080

Hello everyone im thinking about upgrade my pc but i dont know what i should upgrade first. I have i7 10700k, 16gb 3000mhz and rtx 3080. I play in 1440p at 280hz. I only use my pc for gaming. I usually play games like overwatch, xDefiant, diablo 4...
Fyrne2@reddit
I have the exact same combo and planning to switch for a 7950X, the 10700k is right on the edge of bottlenecking the 3080 so change that before the gpu if you want to upgrade
fuckandstufff@reddit
What else do you use the pc for? Can't just be a gaming rig if you're going for the 7950x, right?
Fyrne2@reddit
Nah, 3D software
fuckandstufff@reddit
Ah, that's dope. I want an excuse to buy a high core count high-frequency cpu, but my rig is really just an overpriced playstation. I do absolutely nothing but game on it for about 2 hours at the end of the night lmao. On rare instances, I take work home with me it's all done through a browser.
Snoo-28409@reddit
Problem is that you will probably have bigger impact through new cpu (and mobo, and ram, and even SSD) than going from the 3080 to a 4080 or 4090, BUT lately INTEL 13 and 14 gen chips have been self destructing- would not touch newer Intel until they are VERY thoroughly tested and issues are fixed.... Meanwhile newest Ryzen 9000s have shown only disappointingly modest improvement over previous 7800x3d or the like.... So, would recommend just waiting another 6 months or so. Intel must and will eventually fix the issue... and better Ryzen chips will also be released that are more compelling.
NotTechBro@reddit
10700K and the pretty slow RAM is holding you back the most. 3080 should ideally be paired with a higher end 12th gen or better to get the most out of it.
Turn-Dense@reddit
U need bdie for 10th gen, this cpu can run 4090 if u know how to set up ur platform
NotTechBro@reddit
? A Celeron can run a 4090, it’ll also be choking it the fuck out. 10th gen is nowhere near strong enough to not bottleneck a 4090 regardless of resolution, overclock, or RAM speed.
Turn-Dense@reddit
Simply wrong, feel free to do research

Now thats just sad. Those parents really neglected you that much?
Deathoftheages@reddit
That alone tells me you have no idea what you are talking about.
What_Dinosaur@reddit
Such a relevant resolution. A resolution you can relate to. The resolution next door, you know?
Recent_Delay@reddit
lol what?
For 1440p the 10700K is pretty much the same as an R5 5600X
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCPU0bReh_I
And 5600X is more than enough for a 3090, in the video they're testing with 3090 and at 1440p the bottleneck is clearly the GPU at 99%.
Also, difference between 3000mhz and 3600mhz is like 3 fps in top tier systems, on the rtx 3080 even less than that.
TempHat8401@reddit
6000 MHZ is slow?
I have 3200 MHZ DDR4 and it's still my 3070 that bottlenecks me always.
BeStealthy@reddit
Can you read?
NotTechBro@reddit
We're talking about MTs, not MHz, and 3000 is pretty slow. And your entire comment is meaningless without the CPU.
Ill-Ad-2412@reddit
i did test with my DDR5 6Ghz CL32. my expirience : DDR doesn't have much effect
difference between 3Ghz and 7.6Ghz (same clock) is 40% in AIDA ram benchmark, but in gaming is about 3-5%
recommendation? buy cheap memory and saved money put in to CPU or GPU :)
..between 9800X3D and 5090 ..? my choice would be 5090 XD
SlowTour@reddit
yip use the same setup and the 10700k is the issue in a lot of games.
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
I have this same setup but with 3600mhz RAM and for 1440p 240hz
I would upgrade the 10700k. I play everything on low, so the CPU still plays a big part in performance for me. The 10700k is starting to show its age with what’s available today
Figarella@reddit
You play every game in the world on low so that your 8 core CPU from 2020 is no bottleneck to your 2020 GPU?
Figarella@reddit
It's fine for the time being, maybe wait for the new X3D chips
boddle88@reddit
I’m here too. Gonna go 8000 and 5000 when released. Clocked 10700k and 3080 is a solid combo and not sure either one upgraded will be worth it. 7800 and 4080s maybe next but I’ll hold for next gen for 1440p
Far-Sir1362@reddit
So many people on this sub just wanting to waste money upgrading for no reason. If the games you play or the programs you use are working fine you don't need to upgrade. Go and spend the money on a nice holiday or something.
Wilkiway@reddit
Ram is vey slow and probably bad CL also. If you have micro stutters and freezes thats due to ram. Buy minimum 3600 16-16-16-38 and not 16-19-24-58 or other like that. 3000 will be good for 1050 not 3080
beefygravy@reddit
Run task manager when you're running a game. Is it CPU or GPU that's at 100%? Replace that one
ThatOnePerson@reddit
With how threading works, and depending on the game, the CPU might not be at 100% unless you're looking at individual cores.
So upgrade CPU if GPU isn't at 100%, upgrade GPU if GPU is at 100%.
beefygravy@reddit
Solid advice 👍
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
This. You have to look at the individual cores for the cpu. One will be the "main" core for running the game and it will be way higher than the rest.
Xlond1@reddit
heavily depends on the game
ScreenwritingJourney@reddit
No component that exists right now would consistently hit 280hz at 1440p in anything but esports titles. I would keep what you have and save for a top of the line PC in a few years from now.
mountaingoatgod@reddit
Depends on the games you play
Xlond1@reddit
3080 should last a few more years at least. I have a 3070 and I do great (350+ fps on csgo) with a 13600k. I would go for a new cpu platform, maybe wait for a new ryzen chip thats better than the 7800x3d.
Lonely_Background_96@reddit
I have a 3900x and 6800xt and on CS2 I noticed I no longer get a constant 240 FPS+. Sometimes it dips to mid 100s, though I play on a near 4K screen.
AlcoholicLimaBean@reddit
I was in a similar position. I had a 10700kf and a 3080 ti. I ended up getting a 7800X3D. I think I gave into the hype and expected more but was mostly disappointed overall with the performance gain.
I play on 3440x1440 240hz for reference
tHornyier_ork@reddit
12600k and a new board plus another 16 GB ram.
damien24101982@reddit
Get 7800x3d now and 5080 when it comes out
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
He would need a new motherboard for that, but for gaming you really should be using AMD anyway.
DopesickDreamz@reddit
We want only the best of the best!
Derthnox92@reddit
This is the way
pinoy210@reddit
You should be fine for awhile. Have the same set up but slightly faster ram. It’s crazy people say 3080 is being held back by the 10700k when they were both released the same year
Appropriate-Nose9652@reddit
Nothing at all is the only correct answer
Turn-Dense@reddit
U are mentally ill. If u dont have too little fps/ cant run the game just use ur pc, then u gonna have issues u can see what is an bottleneck / what cause game to not boot, for now u are upgrading to see cool number in task managed
aRandomBlock@reddit
Why would you want to upgrade the 3080? Unless going for a 4090 it's just not worth it and even then it's questionable
og_ramza@reddit
Looks like a perfectly good PC… what is your issue with it?
nano_705@reddit
Install live stats check software like MSI Afterburner, turn on its On-screen Display, boot up your most-demanding games and see for yourself.
If you constantly get your CPU on 100% load, while your GPU is having a walk in the park, get a new mobo and CPU and probably RAM.
On the other hand, if your GPU is screaming and load 100% while your CPU is doing okay-ish, get a new GPU instead.
If both of these things are pretty much equal in load, save some money and upgrade everything at once.
EnthiumZ@reddit
Honestly, I would save for a all new machine. Have a similar-esh setup to yours. 11700k and 3060ti but decided to upgrade the GPU to a 4070S. Decent gains on new games but I quickly went back to playing my usual games which are pretty easy to run. So first ask what you intend to do then act accordingly based on feedback from here.
TattedUpSimba@reddit
I'd upgrade the CPU. Yeah something like a 5080 will be nice when it launches but you can definitely get a more powerful and efficient CPU that'll give you a good boost
Dismal_Hedgehog9616@reddit
The 5080/5090 are going to be 400+w cards from what I’ve seen. What happened to improved efficiency? Anyways your PSU might have to be thought about. Off topic but something I’ve been thinking about for a couple days.
ToThePillory@reddit
The RTX 3080 is still a good GPU, the 10700K is only a so-so CPU. In single core performance, a modern i3 is faster.
WileyBoxx@reddit
For the games you play it’s a waste of money to upgrade within the next probably couple years
kritter4life@reddit
If you really felt the need to do something just change the ram. I’d say the rest is fine. Ram is really slow. You should be running 4000.
Wonnie2610@reddit
I’d say none. Your right is pretty decent at the moment. Wait for the AMD 9000 x3D and RTX 5000 series. Both are right around Jan 2025. Save money, either you would score a 7800x3D at reduced price+nice RTX 4070 times super or hop on new train for new CPU/GPU generation.
Torgoe@reddit
I don’t think you need to upgrade anything. But, if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, I’d upgrade the RAM to faster 32GB kit. The rest of the system is fine.
Naturalhighz@reddit
honestly I'd wait and upgrade everything at once down the line. perfectly capable pc for a good while.
Xcissors280@reddit
Even if you want to upgrade soon Next gen CPUs and GPUs aren’t that far away
AC2BHAPPY@reddit
Yeah that pc is probably good for 5 years minimum
thunderc8@reddit
It depends on what you are playing and what resolution. If you are playing at 1440p+ then scrap that 3080... I did it and it was night and day at my lows, those 10gb of ram are the worst buy i ever did.
For context i have 2 identical rigs. 5800x3d , 32gb ram 3200mhz cl 14. Mine with 3080 gigabyte eagle and my sons with a sapphire rx 6809 because i wanted to pay less for Fortnite, roblox etc. At the beginning late 2020 all was fine but early 2023 i had more lag spikes and les fps on the same games as my sons rig with rx6800. After expensive research 10gb isn't enough and don't let everyone convince you otherwise, i couldn't find in stock a 7900xtx so i bought a 4080s. I think this time for 1440p 16gb of ram will be fine for at least 4 years else I'll scrap Nvidia and go team red for a more future proof solution.
9okm@reddit
I'm using a 10700k/3080 at 1440p. Don't see myself upgrading until fall of 2025.
bomerr@reddit
Upgrade your CPU. Wait till the next generation of Intel CPUs and 9000 series X3D chips if budget is no limit.
cuddly_degenerate@reddit
What fps are you getting in those games with your current setup?
poramadison@reddit
Kinda in the same field but I’m gonna just buy a new pc cause it’s not gonna be a lot and I’ll have everything upgraded compare to when I bought a pc in 2020.
bibikalka1@reddit
Neither!
Sit tight with what you have till some must upgrade options emerge! The "must upgrade" part will kick in when you cannot play a specific game that you want.
cmndr_spanky@reddit
I try to play at 4K and 60fps.. so I’ve kept my CPU (10700 as well) and upgraded to a 40 series Nvidia GPU and works amazing in AAA games… however if you’re hoping to keep settings and low and really need 200fps, I have no idea .. that’s just not how I play games (prefer ultra settings over super high fps).
M0HAK0@reddit
The processor. That is pretty dated and not nearly as fast as more modern processors. The 3080 isnt as outdated and should be ok for now.
Vannman04@reddit
I’d usually say 3080 could be upgraded since ur at 1440p. But I see you want highest fps possible with high refresh rate so most def get a cpu mobo ram upgrade. If ur patient wait a few months and ryzen 7000 could be even cheaper
Ninjazoule@reddit
Cpu is significantly outdated in comparison
Kvpe@reddit
first thing i’d change is RAM.
PuzzleheadedWord7188@reddit
Your rig is good enough to wait till the next gen of CPU's and GPU's.
mrawesome1q@reddit
I would do the cpu. I use a 3080 and game at 1440/165 with no issues. I think your bottle neck is cpu/ram. AM5 would be a great way to go. Then if you’re feeling frisky when the 50 series drops you can go to a 5080.
I was debating upgrading my 3080 and started looking at benchmarks and my computer performance and came to the conclusion that for me the dollar to performance doesn’t make sense to upgrade that right now. Dollars are relative though…
Lights5oot@reddit
the 3080 is a very powerful card at the moment and you don't need to update very soon, I recommend upgrading the cpu first as it does give a significant bottleneck (I speak from personal experience with this exact same setup, not any calculator, I was being held back significantly) the cpu should be your first priority
Xenoryzen_Dragon@reddit
upgrade with core i7 gen11 cpu need mobo bios update + 32gb ram ddr4 3200mhz + 1tb gen4/gen5 m.2 ssd with dram/heatsink + wifi 7 pcie card + rtx 4000 series/radeon rx 7000 series gpu with 16gb vram
EllieBasebellie@reddit
10700k. If you can get to an x3D you’ll gain platform longevity allowing for at least one more true upgrade.
3080 is still a fine card- plus there’s a whole new generation about to drop. See how that pans out first
