Impressed with my Xennial friends here!

I just have to say this is the best sub on Reddit. It’s somewhere I can go and not be bombarded with political trash. It’s a sub that has content JUST related to the sub. It’s nice to come here and get away for a while and just enjoy Xennial topics and get blasts from the past. So seriously, thanks to all my Xennial brothers and sisters keeping things on topic. The political spectrum is broad and I think it says a lot about our generation that we can all come here and have fun and talk about the “good old days” no matter what. Cheers!

It's like that first bite of Stove Top after gettin' knocked out by Soda Popinski..
Reasonable_Doubt_15@reddit
😂
Achillea707@reddit
Stove top was my original cheat meal. So bad but soooo good.
comicshopgrl@reddit
StoveTop is so good but gives me wicked heartburn so now I have to eat the healthy alternative. Sucks.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
Tums and Pepto are lifesavers, but most of those problems went away when I stopped overeating. It matters less what I eat so much as how much I eat.
moonlitmelody@reddit
Stovetop is a Thanksgiving tradition that will forever remain in yearly rotation. That comfort food has a place of pride on my table.
My husband and I both grew up poor and even though we can afford to eat ground chia and flax in our oatmeal and a $3 bottle of kombucha to wash it down I will not let go of my white trash beginnings. Cranberry can-shaped slices. Black olives on the fingertips. Mashed Potatoes and butter at equal volumes. Look, I calorie-in and calorie-out for the rest of the year, but my life is better with a big serving of nostalgia.
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
Careful with it though. My father in law developed type 2 diabetes. Stovetop was the hardest thing for him to give up. It's processed garbage and carbs, so use sparingly.
localjargon@reddit
You can make homemade stove top and control the garbage. For example, in this recipe you can substitute olive oil for the butter. You can also use whatever bread is suitable for his diet, so it shouldn't be too bad.

The secret to a lot of good stuff is stale bread
CMFC99@reddit
And the secret to beating Soda Popinski is to catch him with a body blow as he ducks to unleash an uppercut, then dodge his uppercut and counter with one of your own. Instant KO.
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
Score!!!! Thank you.
Achillea707@reddit
Lol, I am a grown adult and the last time I ate Stovetop was before the iphone was invented. More like your FIL should be more careful.
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
I agree, but I have to admit that it is tasty and quick. He loved it though and misses it.
Enge712@reddit
It used to be one of my favorite ghetto backpacking dinners. Other people would be eating a $9 backpack freeze dried mealy and I was pouring boiling water in a ziploc bag of stovetop
errorseven@reddit
Soda was easy, Sandman on the other hand...
WayneReidus@reddit
Sandman I could actually beat, but I always had trouble with Super Macho Man

Did anyone else have ICQ, or was that an Ohio/midwest/my own fever dream thing? I tried to tell my (also Xennial) husband about it recently and he looked at me like I'd grown up on the moon, he had never heard of it. (He had AIM. We didn't have AOL service when I was growing up.)
WhippidyWhop@reddit
I almost remember my ICQ number! Your husband probably didn't play online games like Ultimate Online. ICQ was the standard for that game, with AIM being the 2nd.
You didn't need any AOL services for AIM.
MaximumRatchet@reddit
alloy1028@reddit
I used ICQ a lot in West Virginia. It came out a little bit earlier than AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, and MSN Messenger. I don’t remember using anything before that except for chat rooms for specific subject areas and physical letters that were hand delivered or mailed.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
Prior to ICQ, I used BeSeen HTML chat rooms. My ICQ number was low/mid four digit, I think, so I didn't get into it super early.
WhippidyWhop@reddit
Lol what, it was mid 4-digit? That is very super early!
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
Now that you mention it, it was kinda early. Could have been five digits. This would have been probably '97 or '98.
bakedveldtland@reddit
Mostly only my computer nerd “hacker” friends used it, but I thought it was fun and tried to get other friends into it when I could.
MrsEmilyN@reddit
I used Yahoo. My dad didn't want AIM for whatever reason.
moonlitmelody@reddit
I quoted a Modest Mouse song (Heart Cooks Brain) to a kid who was a few years younger than me and going through a hard time. We moved from ICQ, to Hotmail, then Gmail, and then finally Facebook. We shared good news and bad. Heartbreaks and marriages. Parenthood. Adulthood. Stable jobs. We watched each other’s lives unfold all through chat.
I’m so grateful for the bonds that early days instant messaging brought into my life. I still keep in touch with quite a few people, some who I still have never met but our friendships are almost 30 years strong.

I’m always amazed that I watched him grow up. We formed such strong bonds of friendship through such an impersonal medium. It was honestly more connected with less, no constantly updates and best of reels. I miss it.
GreenHairyMartian@reddit
Icq was dope
Blaze_556@reddit
I had icq. Me and my friends mostly used yahoo chat though.

42/f/FL just doesn't feel like a reasonable response to this!
I guess the answer in my heart will forever be 18/f/California (just like it was as a 13 yo who had never been further west in the US than Ohio.)
BrontosaurusB@reddit
I assumed everyone I was talking to was lying about all details, but since I’m in California I never thought about people wanting to specifically lie about being from California. That’s hilarious. I was just as bored as you just sitting at a computer saying nonsense to strangers, not unlike this very comment.
LacyKnits@reddit
California seemed exotic (sunny!) and glamorous to kids from small towns with long winters!
MightBeAGoodIdea@reddit
I think a lot of kids did that. At least we smart about not sharing our real location when pretending to be 18+. Youd get kicked out of some rooms if you said under 18. Looking back as an adult i feel so lucky didn't get end up a tragic story for the to catch a predator show.
lilecca@reddit
I lived in the middle of Canada and the answer was always 17/f/California lol

Made a friend in (West?) Virginia - Yankville and even called from Australia a couple of times. It was a different world then. Thanks for being a freind to a kid from down under Jess Livengood.
Chet_Phoney@reddit
This generation is probably the most wholesome ever. Lack of empathy, accountability, the internet and extreme codependency has ruined the last couple generations.
OkPie8905@reddit
I blame the victim narrative that exploded online, and their penchant to follow critics on social media, not critical thinkers. It’s easy to be angry without offering a solution.
WhippidyWhop@reddit
Yea, everyone is so triggered and polarized, it's obnoxious and exhausting.
empanada_de_queso@reddit
Nahhh let's not do the old people "kids these days" shtick
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
Why, we're about the right age to take up our parent's mantle. 👴
Far_Scientist_5082@reddit
I work with teenagers and I like to remind them all the time that the internet was a mistake.
WhippidyWhop@reddit
It's the only subreddit of people that I relate to completely. Politics was always such a minor focus and now it's the forefront of everyone's minds. I miss the old days.
TotallyRadDude1981@reddit
I don’t do politics. I’m so over it.
MightyBigMinus@reddit
as the last people to have time to graduate and get a job before the 08 crash a key distinction between xennials and millennials is that many xennials still live in a boomer/gen-x "no politics" (conservative) world. as the last of the middle class many are the last to be able to afford to believe the system is fundamentally good enough and close enough that talk of changing it is unwelcome.
the rest of the millennial's cannot afford to suffer such a delusion.
PostTurtle84@reddit
Naw man, I'm left of liberal. But I need places of peace. Where I spend my time, the books I read, even the food I eat changes during an election year.
I'm a high strung very nervous soul and I've maxed out my anxiety meds (not willing to take benzos except for the odd one for twilight sedation) so I have to actively look for peace and calm and avoid stressful situations.
My brother is conservative af, but we've learned that for our parents sake we can't talk about politics. I think that's what's going on here. The rules say no modern politics, we want to be able to talk to other people who have similar childhood experiences, so we mind the rules. It helps to keep things peaceful.
MrsEmilyN@reddit
My dad always told me growing up, never talk politics or religion with friends.
So I never did.
I'm not religious and know nothing about politics.
PostTurtle84@reddit
Oh we definitely discuss politics with other people, just not with each other. It goes as far as "you still a liberal atheist?" "Yup. You still a conservative catholic?" "Yup"
Our parents urged caution in discussing politics and religion with friends, but that it's good to know where your friends stand.
TotallyRadDude1981@reddit
You really think the 08 crash only affected Millennials and younger? You’re delusional.
And we all have our political beliefs. You’re not the only one. But not every aspect of our lives has to be filled with political talk. You want politics? Go to a political sub. This sub obviously isn’t for you.
Have a nice day!
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
The eldest of us graduated HS and entered work right into the loving arms of the dot com bust. We foresaw the struggles ahead.
graceful_mango@reddit
Or. We all have political leanings and opinions to some degree or another. If we recognize that not every space of our lives has to bleed into every other space.
When I want to talk politics I go to those subs. And when I don’t. I want to enjoy discussions on other topics. That’s what this thread is celebrating.
No-Championship-8677@reddit
This is me. I’m very passionately political and care very very much. But it doesn’t need to be in every space. I love that this space isn’t political.

I bought my nephew a Hypercolor shirt for his 5th birthday. He will live all the highlights of my life!
morrisboris@reddit
I’m in business school and someone pitched bathing suits with heat activated color changing fabric… and I was like… hypercolor? crickets and blank stares
Glass-Marionberry321@reddit
No one needs to see when someone has heated genitals😆
morrisboris@reddit
I know right lol I was like it will all be the hot color anyway and stay that color from the body heat. Hyper color armpits were so embarrassing, and my boobs would make marks lol I was like the ghost of Christmas future.
JennXL@reddit
They still make them??? I had one that was actually a guy in a suit, and when it warmed up, the suit turned into like board shorts and a t-shirt? It was amazing, and no one else had one like that.

Cer-rific_43@reddit
I did! I forgot about it until now, though. Thanks for the memory unlock
PuroPinchePedo@reddit
As an elder xennial (1977) I am done with politics since it seems like a lose-lose. If the cynicism of the 90s taught me anything it’s that you’re on your own anyway. I’m also just ready to retire to the mountains. 😂
DerbGentler@reddit
Let's unite and make the lose-lose into a win-win!
e.g. voting for good-willing third parties. Constant dripping wears away the stone.

ApatheistHeretic@reddit
I would encourage you not to. Staying away from party affiliation, it's still undeniable that gov't decisions have the most long-term impact on lives. I would say, find non-sensational news sources, fact-check like crazy, and just vote. Don't engage in discussions w/others on the topic.

I was at an incubus concert last night & it was the ULTIMATE Xennial occasion!!! Xennials of all types & shapes & sizes vibing together. It was fabulous!
KorukoruWaiporoporo@reddit
One of my best mates got into the funniest fight at an Incubus concert in the early 2000s. Some guy grabbed her arse in the mosh (both hands, quite pinchy, defo no accident) so she turned around and punched him in the face. He goes down, as much as anyone can in a mosh. The guy's girlfriend who saw the punch, but presumably not the grab, starts getting gobby on my mate. So my friend punched her too. Then she got kicked out.
MaximumRatchet@reddit
The very first concert I went to by myself, in high school (well, with friends - just didn't have a parental escort)! I was so madly in love with Brandon Boyd!
FKFnz@reddit
Haha I went to Incubus (and Live) a few months ago and thought the same thing. All the parents have ditched the kids for the evening and come out for a night of awesome tunes. But none of them are overdoing it because work in the morning/babysitter at home/kids will be up early.
cats_n_tats11@reddit
I'm curious, how was it?? I never got to see them back in the day but they're playing a festival I have tickets for in a couple weeks. Still good??

I sort of hung with those guys once back in the day when they played a local show at my school. It still blows my mind how they got so huge.

The one thing I think our slice of a generation really got right was knowing how to live and let live. There’s a particular energy and attitude that I’ve only seen in people almost my exact age, that has an “I don’t care, you do you as long as you’re not hurting anybody” way about them. I think that has been lost or is seen as apathetic, but it’s not, it’s like a gentle “fuck it” but not in a fuck you way. It’s a detail I feel very thankful to find in myself, and in others of my generation.

Welcome to be a Xennial. Where you’ve been told that you’re a different generation every 4-6 years of your life, your older sibling got all the angst, your younger siblings got all the attention, and you got the key under around your neck and a few hours alone after school.
No political here cause even if we do have an opinion we know there are just some places you keep it to yourself.
darthduder666@reddit
This is really one of the only subs that stays on topic and avoids touchy subjects such as politics. It really does bring me back to our younger days when people rarely ever talked politics or other personal beliefs amongst each other, and just kept all that shit private.
There’s so many other subs, places in social media and in real life situations where shit always has to get political. It’s exhausting and toxic. To visit this sub and contribute to it with you all is refreshing.
NerdingOutSkins@reddit
I go other places and people are so rude and so unkind. They make the craziest assumptions.

IT’S BECAUSE WE ARE THE BEST GENERATION!! 😉

I was thinking of posting something similar. This is the best and by far my favorite sub.
My sister and brother are both full Gen X being 9 and 6 years older and I never felt like I related with them. I never felt part of Gen X. The Millennial sub doesn’t connect either.
This is the subreddit I relate to and read your comments and feel understood. So, thanks all the Xennials. We’re the truly forgotten generation. Gen X spouts all this crap about being forgotten but then say they like it. I feel like our age group just gets glossed over by everyone.
Not quite a Millenial but not fully a Gen X-er. Ya’ll are awesome

Politics is one of my hobbies. I love it. But, it's great to come to a place where that's not really a focus and it's all about shared experiences with people who totally understand when you talk about the late 90s vibe being the greatest. Hope you felt that vibe just then!
ErrantTaco@reddit
This exactly. It’s what I do professionally, and I do love it. Folks are more engaged locally than they used to be and it’s cool. But it’s also a LOT and this sub is such a breath of fresh air to not hear anything at all about that part of things.
Mackheath1@reddit
Yeah, I love politics, but there's a time and a place for it: that one friend you both like to banter about it, etc.; not inundation.
