This scene woke something inside me as a boy...

Did Trash cause you to pause and rewind?
Who was your VHS love?
Hugh-Jorgan69@reddit
This movie and Evil Dead 2 are the Gold Standards of comedy-horror to this day. Nothing else is even close.
ArcadeKingpin@reddit
American Psycho would like a word
tomqvaxy@reddit
I wouldn’t call that horror. Psychological thriller I guess? It’s a weird one.
datbackup@reddit
I think maybe the issue is “horror” vs “supernatural horror” and how for some people the first always implicitly means the second
My first impulse was to agree with you, because I don’t think of American Pyscho as horror, but then, is the Scream franchise horror?
I guess we could say there is also the “slasher” genre and Scream and AP fit in that somewhat but yeah mainly I think the issue is whether horror is intrinsically supernatural and for me I lean yes
tomqvaxy@reddit
Interesting. I don’t feel like it needs to have supernatural absolutely but you’re right it is not present in Scream and that’s unusual for more modern horror. 1970s horror was when shit like TexasCM arrived and that’s pure slash and gross no spooky.
I just feel like American Psycho is so purely a commentary on finance bro culture and mental illness that while horrifying all the murder could be left out and you’d have roughly the same movie.
Non-traditional horror I guess maybe. Or horror as a subcategory not the primary filing.
Now horror comedy? Dead Alive.
datbackup@reddit
Good point. Actually if the murders happened only off screen and the audience was left wondering if Bateman actually did it, that could potentially be a much more disturbing film.

I vaguely remember watching this like 20 years ago! I might have to give it another watch.
Another one that reminds me of is Stacy:

When you google it says it’s horror/comedy under description. The director calls it a horror comedy. It’s horror comedy.
tomqvaxy@reddit
Ah google. What.
The director I guess but I disagree. I’m including the book in my opinion ftr. Not horror. Are all movies with murders horror? Westerns just got weird.
Spazzrico@reddit
Agreed but need to add Shaun of the Dead
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
That arguably sheds the horror aspect because it's parody. I don't remember ever feeling afraid/horrified by it.

Hm, I haven't seen this movie (yet).
But I think kind of the first VHS crush for me was Milla Jovovich in "Return to the Blue Lagoon". (Which was the first movie I watched on VHS in 1991.)
turntabletennis@reddit (OP)
Milla Jovovich is in my top 5 for sure. The mother of my daughters is built VERY similarly, and it drives me crazy lol

Like us Xennials are sometimes called "The Lucky Ones" you are probably one of the most lucky! 😉

I don’t know what movie this is.
Due-Dentist9986@reddit
Me either. Released in 85 and a Hard R no chance I would have seen this movie as I lacked f*ucked up older siblings or cousins that would have shown it to me.

hoopstick@reddit
I’m firmly xennial and this movie was released when I was 2.
turntabletennis@reddit (OP)
Most of us would have been renting this movie in the 90s, during the age of no parental supervision. Perhaps you caught it on USA, and wanted to watch it with swears.
ancientjinn@reddit
Also those of us who would have a library card and a predilection towards zombies and Bela Lugosi and the rest. My library card made me a goth!
turntabletennis@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah! I lived in a tiny town with no such library perks, but we sure as hell had Old Towne Video!
CubesFan@reddit
Ah, yes! Now I remember her.
lifeat24fps@reddit
“The corpses!” I’ve loved this movie since I rented it as a way too impressionable 8 year old. My parents let us watch EVERYTHING.
Also if you grew up in the Northeast watching “Mr. PathMark” turning into a zombie was wild stuff.
turntabletennis@reddit (OP)
Our parents really didn't care what we watched. It blows me away. It's such a common thing to hear lol
media-and-stuff@reddit
My parents didn’t care until one of the other parents did.
I was going through a killer doll phase in like grade 5 and I was so excited to see the new child’s play in the theatre. My older cousin was going to take me and a friend. I was pumped. My friend’s parents shut it down and then suddenly my parents cared and I couldn’t go either.
Meanwhile renting Friday the 13th or nightmare on elm street was still perfectly fine.
turntabletennis@reddit (OP)
Dang, cousins parents thought ol Satan was gonna get ya!
VaselineHabits@reddit
My mother let me rent this around 8-9... still one of my favorite movies and spawned a lifelong love of horror and zombie films.
But our parents really didn't care 😕 😅

So my older sister, who was 16 at the time, wanted to watch this movie in the theaters when it came out. My mom she would take her but I would have to go as well. I was freaking 6yrs old.
So ya I can totally relate with something being woke in me. I also had nightmares of the tar man for a month as it was the first horror movie I ever saw. Its was this weird thing of fear and nudity that opened my mind. It was the movie that started my love for horror actually!

Remember seeing an ad for it being on tv later that night, and calling my parents for consent to watch it (I was in a hospital rehabilitation ward and stayed for the weekend and being 13, I needed parental consent for these things, same thing when I wanted to see the Eddie Murphy stand up shows on tv that year)
That movie was quite something
turntabletennis@reddit (OP)
Oh snap!! This one has panache!

Linnea Quigley had that effect

The Linnea Quigley Effect sounds like a band you could have seen on the Warped Tour in the late 90s or early 00’s… or on a Thursday at a local beer-only spot.
