Seen copperheads at Oak Point several times in the past couple weeks. Just comes with the nature preserve. Nothing to worry about unless you step on one. Most of the trails are pretty clear and you will see them easily — except for some parts of Rowlett Creek trail which still have lots of branches. I haven’t seen any rattlesnakes out there though which are terrifying when you hear them but don’t see them.
Yeseylon@reddit
Exactly. My first thought was, "oh no, there's nature at a nature preserve??!!! Whatever will we do???!!!"
kidyus@reddit
I’m blind, can’t find it!
VeganTarkatan@reddit
Snake would of got me too lol
Coyomojo@reddit
Ugh I can't post a picture as a reply. Look in the middle of the picture, zoom, zoom, zoom, it's on a stick.

Thank you.

Perfect! I see it now!

You’re in his yard.
is_that_sarcasm@reddit (OP)
Truth. I felt it too
Solololololololololo@reddit
Least it’s not on the trail.
HighFiveKoala@reddit
I've seen a few on the sidewalk around the lake
Solololololololololo@reddit
Oh yeah I’ve seen one at one of the park entrances from the pavillion side

Pretty much exact center, I definitely didn't see it at first though.

Beat me to it

Yikes

I think Oak Point should be renamed Copper Oak Point- I think I see a copperhead once out of every three times I go. Typically in the evenings they are out but now with the drop in temps they are on the move.
It amazes me they have live young instead of eggs
Fiddleyfig@reddit
I was bitten by one near that trail (assuming it’s oak point) about 9 years ago but I was on a dirt trail
happy_puppy25@reddit
I was bitten or stung by something, it definitely felt a lot worse than a normal bee sting. 6 months later and still pain. Doctor says nothing to worry about
PomeloPepper@reddit
I got bitten by a big ratsnake in arbor hills park. My dog had gotten off leash and was dashing around in the tall grass, and I was chasing him, making sudden turns and doing pretty much everything they tell you not to. I still literally had to step on that snake to get bitten.
Boatwarden@reddit
Oh shit. What happened?
AldoTheApache3@reddit
Just some info. Copperheads’ and cottonmouths’ venom is fairly anemic compared to something like a rattlesnake.
flilmawinstone@reddit
Plus aren’t most snake bites on humans dry bites ?
Fiddleyfig@reddit
Went to the ER and it swelled up pretty bad. The doctors wanted to wait and see how it affected me. After a few hours I decided to leave since I was uninsured at the time and have my mom who is a nurse watch and take my vitals. Nothing happened and the swelling went down gradually over the next couple days. Then I received a bill for $7000 from the hospital for my lovely stay in their hospital.
bzbeer@reddit
Glad you got only a tiny dose of the venom, it could easily get pretty bad.
Sucks about the hospital bill. I wonder when the US health system will get fixed, it has become awful 😞
DorianTurk@reddit
Sadly it won’t get fixed. The people making all the money off it have convinced half our population that fixing it would somehow be bad.
bzbeer@reddit
And they got the congress and senate in their pocket too. Lobbying is just legalized corruption.
papaya_boricua@reddit
Typical private hospital shenanigans. Ugh.

✨America✨
briancmoses@reddit
This shouldn't be surprising, they frequently bask on that boardwalk/sidewalks all throughout Oak Point Park and **Nature Preserve**.
From a distance, thank that nope-rope for being such a good host and enjoy your visit.
CHBCKyle@reddit
Also copperheads are pretty docile. Like obv don’t touch it but don’t freak out either, it’s not gonna hurt you as long as you leave it be
ApothaneinThello@reddit
There's signs warning of the snakes iirc
is_that_sarcasm@reddit (OP)
I'm not surprised, I've just never seen one before so up close.
runfayfun@reddit
PSA: New world crotalids like copperheads retain their bite reflex even after death. Even if it looks dead, leave it alone. (Old world crotalid? Play with it all you want.)
is_that_sarcasm@reddit (OP)
That is an excellent factoid.
shaheen73@reddit
That's pretty close; I would have turned back right from there.
Ok-Investment-4986@reddit
“Omg a snake” - typical Plano-ite
is_that_sarcasm@reddit (OP)
Hey look, everyone! A troll! Way more interesting than the snake.
HumbleFigure1118@reddit
I saw one at the edge of the trail, it's very small one. Not sure how long will they grow.
sommersprossn@reddit
I was there with a friend Labor Day weekend and one was right on the trail! She almost stepped right on it 😳
Little dude/gal definitely just wanted to get away from us, but I was still spooked and we stuck to the paved walkways after that.
BelichicksHoodie@reddit
I’m convinced that I’ve likely passed plenty of snakes in my life without ever knowing, and that’s a little terrifying 😅.
I don’t think I would’ve ever noticed that one
is_that_sarcasm@reddit (OP)
My wife noticed it. She sees patterns extremely well.
Agreeable_Gap_1641@reddit
Oh I was just there this morning for soccer with the kid. I saw a few piles behind us that I thought it best to keep away from.
luistorre5@reddit
This morning? It was so beautiful I had to go through the trails, never once looked down hahaha
gr-eightApe@reddit
maybe animal control will see your post on /plano and go hunt those fuckers down. LOL. I think not!
papaya_boricua@reddit
Can't tell you how many times I find them in my yard. Thinking they are a stick at first. Closer look and I'm like 👀
kubrck@reddit
Is there one in the bottom right too? Partially visible right next to the wood plank?
MeteuWuliechsin@reddit
I think you're right, but it's buried WAY down enough under the foilage to not be able to tell for sure.
Icy-Essay-8280@reddit
I HATE snakes!!
MisanthropicAnthro@reddit
I've seen them on the trails a bunch of times. Almost ran one over on a bike more than once, thinking it was a stick until I was up on it.
TrenythingIsPossible@reddit
Took me a minute to find it
Tenaha@reddit
They have live babies in the fall
