Computer mites all over setup
Posted by CrackedSamYT@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 52 comments
So 2 days ago I saw a few small white dots on my pc case and thought it was dust. Yesterday night I turned my pc off and saw a large amount of these mites all over my setup. Today I was cleaning it with wipes and after wiping majority off I used a bit of disinfectant (detol) with tissues and dabbed it around my setup. I'm just wondering if it will work and what is the best way to get rid of computer mites.
mydadsohard@reddit
are you getting biiten? itchy?
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
They're completely harmless all they do is move around black surfaces
mydadsohard@reddit
wonder what the food source is. ram ? lol
RelativeSweet9523@reddit
Wtf r computer mites
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
No idea bro Google told me that
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
This thread is crazy. People just bandwagoning on downvotes for good info, and upvoting bad info like bed bugs lol. Computer mites are what lots of people call them.
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
Fr bro
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
Yeah reddit is weird sometimes.
AeyeO@reddit
A lot of people aren't very bright
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
It ain’t computer mites. You got fleas or bed bugs or something similar. I would be worried about decontaminating everything not the computer
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
Yeah it definitely must be computer mites. It can't be fleas because the house is kept clean and no pets and bedbugs aren't white and their usually much bigger compared to these but about decontaminating I have been cleaning the desk, peripherals, monitor and the pc parts carefully
debirdiev@reddit
Bro "computer mites" are not a thing. You've got something else going on.
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
People definitely mention them all over google, including on reddit. So idk. I think they are dust mites, but tons of people say "computer mites."
debirdiev@reddit
They might refer to them as computer mites but they are always coming from a source elsewhere in a home. Insects don't feed on metal or electronics, therefore the mites homie has are coming from somewhere else in his home. Carpet, mold, maybe the desk chair, whatever. But "computer mites" are not a thing. They are bugs that got into/on his computer.
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
They came from a different source, yes, but they are in his pc now. They are feeding on dust and keyboard grime, so they have become computer mites.
AeyeO@reddit
Nope
washburn100@reddit
Well they must be a thing. He got pictures. I’d recommend a new cpu. That should fix it.
3sheetz@reddit
Dust mites
NormanQuacks345@reddit
House can't be that clean if you've got bugs like that inside.
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
Lol, everyone is getting hung up on "computer mites." If they thought for one second they would realize you mean dust mites, which is what they are. Harmless dust mites. They definitely are not fruit flies or bedbugs, I know what all those look like, unfortunately.
Gastronomicus@reddit
You cannot see dust mites with the naked eye. These are something else.
Ok_Awareness3860@reddit
Google says dust mites are .2mm long. I think with high contrast like a white mite on a black computer you could see it. I'm pretty sure that's what they are. Or they are just some other type of harmless bug.
t0m0hawk@reddit
There's no such thing as computer mites. Its something else. They just happen to be in your computer.
davey031@reddit
Look similar to spider mites... but those live on plants and make webs. Got houseplants nearby? Check those
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
Nah haven't got no plants, pets, mold even
3sheetz@reddit
What? Do you have pictures? These could be fleas, fruit flues, chiggers, etc. "Computer mites" are not really a thing...Maybe you have dust mites?
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
here
Relevant-Ad1138@reddit
What the fuck
nigirizushi@reddit
Looks like mites of some sort. Mold mites maybe.
cmndr_spanky@reddit
Dust mites are not visible without a microscope, and rest assured they are everywhere
Line_Deep@reddit
Computer mites aren't a thing - 25 pest control companies disagree.... Not saying you are wrong, companies can invent problems, but, yeah....
3sheetz@reddit
You have to vacuum
3sheetz@reddit
What?
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
Alright
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
I just took pictures how do I send them
clupean@reddit
imgur.com or similar. Then copy the links to the photos in your post.
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
Done it
clupean@reddit
Too small and too many. You'll need to do a deep cleaning in order to remove them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-qY59VrVS4
However, whatever those tiny bugs are, they didn't come from your PC. You'll need to eradicate the source or they'll be back.
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
I've done a deep clean with disinfectant and wiped over many times. I've removed like 95% of the dust from my pc and all over my desk and peripherals but they seem to keep spawning randomly but this time in lower quantities I'm pretty sure
clupean@reddit
No need to to do that many times, you only need to clean once like in the video: clean every component separately. The guy is practically showering them with his cleaning products.
Once you're done, use an insecticide lacquer to paint the external parts of the case. It leaves a thin and invisible layer that prevents crawling insects from crossing. It's not very ecological, but you should do it to protect your PC.

upload to an image hosting site like imgur and paste the link

They're not bugs, they're features!
Personal_Occasion618@reddit
Run check disk on the command prompt, should fix any bugs your pc is having.

I'd bet on psocids.
If you ever hear a ticking noise, especially at night, that's what you have. They love paper, electronics, glue and organic material.
Furbs109@reddit
Nuke it from orbit.
rdy_csci@reddit
Google white aphids. They are all over this time of year. Is that what they look like?
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
Nah definitely not those
Line_Deep@reddit
Do you know how to use the search function?
https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/uuisug/little_bugs_in_pc_and_accessories_i_think_maybe/
CrackedSamYT@reddit (OP)
Well obviously but had not much time bro
Line_Deep@reddit
it took you longer to type this reply than to search "computer mites" - but yeah, crack on - my advice is DON'T try anything anyone suggests until you KNOW what these bugs are, what works to kill one bug could actually speed up reproduction or give food to others
wordfool@reddit
Cue joke about debugging your computer...
They're most likely to be mold mites based on your vague description so the way to get rid of them is to eliminate any source of humidity -- dehumidifier in the room or wrap your computer in plastic for a few days with silica gel packets inside. Then you can clean thoroughly inside the case with an alcohol solution.
