They follow current events, but do not "go hard." They will make an episode vaguely referencing some controversial event, but with no actual political message or statement. Just have it be background for a regular episode about the kids or whatever.
This is why I say that current events zingers are the lowest form of comedy. In 10-15 years Gen Alpha isn't going to be able to watch vintage South Park like alot of their parents did and understand the humor that was spawned from referencing poll numbers from four elections ago.
I highly doubt that. That's like saying Gen Alpha won't watch Breaking Bad. Sure not all of them will but it's a landmark show during a golden age of television. In my opinion it's silly to act like shows like this that have become iconic in pop culture will become irrelevant in ten years. Maybe less popular but not irrelevant.
I agree that they held up, but idk, I feel like a lot of the current jokes will still hold up in the future. Because those specific ones held up, despite none of the zoomers getting a reference to the source material anymore.
I had a worry that the SP team was on the track to getting washed a few seasons ago, but imo they course-corrected hard from the strict “one season follows one continuous storyline” mode into a “each episode is separate entirely, but there are minor references to what happened earlier.”
My high school cousins still quote episodes from that era because brainrot content creators pull sound bites from them and sometimes they watch the source
Futurama did the same thing. Doing a reference to a current hot topic (eg. cryptocurrency) is going to age like milk (it has basically turned into cheese by the time the episode aired).
Futurama has always referenced current events. The first season has a Titanic episode and the Mars university episode is just a parody of all the 80s/90s college frat movies.
Parodying movies (depending on the movie and how hard you go for it) often works because the movies themselves have some universal story. In these cases, romance in a time of disaster and young men coming of age. It works a lot better than riffing on the news.
Older South Park does still work even if you don't know who people are and what was happening at the time. Which is exactly why I don't think it's as good anymore.
I knew this comment sounded regarded so I had to check. It was 8 episodes into a 10 episode season Trump won. Again, they make episodes insanely fast so even if your theory of "it fucked everything" up was true they maybe had a shitty week at work and then it was fine
The post says it’s because they don’t find the Trump jokes funny anymore. I know it’s hard to read a post before commenting but I believe in you next time little buddy.
If you make fun of Trump it 1) isn't funny because all the jokes about Trump have already been made, it isn't novel satire of real events, it's just tired Trump bad humor that we've had for a decade and 2) Trump supporters REEEE about "Trump derangement syndrome" and call you woke if you make fun of Trump
Eh, it's pretty difficult to get content out of Trump to begin with, because he's already a caricature and funny on his own. Typically attempts to satirize him come off as derivative - a middle school teacher that wants to fuck his puppet Mr Hat becomes president? How is that any crazier than real life?
Other guy missed the point of what Matt and Trey were talking about. All they were saying is that they had Mr. Garrison (one of the show’s regular side characters) as their Trump stand-in character as a joke. He had his face painted orange, and was wearing a blonde wig and shit, and was basically acting as a parody of the real Trump.
They never thought Trump would actually win, but when he did, that meant they had to write multiple story arcs over the rest of the Trump presidency with Mr. Garrison as the president of the USA, which is something they never planned on doing and caused them some headache. It was even referenced in the show, with Mr. Garrison himself being surprised he actually won, and freaking out a bit because he never thought he was actually going to become president. It really wasn’t that big of a deal, they just ended up having to get more creative with the future storylines than they planned on.
They should always make a super earnest episode glazing each respective candidate hard and only release the one of the candidate that lost. Would be hilarious every time.
I'm pretty sure it would have just been the same episode but with McCain doing the Whitehouse part of the heist instead of Obama. And the Obama people making their bunker instead of McCains.
I’m glad they learned from their mistakes and not cover the election, that was definitely the weaker South Park seasons.
Btw saying they’ve lost their touch is kinda retarded, just because that was a weak season doesn’t mean South Park hasn’t been good since then.
There still have great episodes like the Harry and Megan episodes, Banned in China, “put a chick in it and make her lame and gay”, plus the specials, etc, etc.
I think the latest season was a proper return to form, and I'd say that 5/6 of those episodes were really strong (Japanese Toilet was my favourite because, save the Tegridy element, that could have been an episode from S14)
I used to love South Park but I haven't watched it in a couple years... they're seriously still doing the Tegridy farms bit with Randy??? That shit got old after like three episodes.
I don't think they've done a serialised story since about S21 (we're on 26), although I guess you could count the two-part TV movie stuff like Post Covid
A lot of their specials were great, the worst part about those seasons was the sudden switch to an overarching story instead of self-contained episodes. Watching Cartman be abusive to his gf wasn’t funny after it was done like 5 times.
The overarching plot was annoying as hell. What I love about the earlier seasons is that one episode could be about some major current event, then the next would be about something completely insignificant. I liked the balance of political satire episodes and episodes about the kids being kids.
The Disney put a chick in and make her gay is the best example of how fucked they are now. They tried to make Kathleen Kennedy sympathetic while portraying the forced diversity as a response to fan bacl
“Just wailing on woke stuff all the time is pretty lazy too” that was the message, the pandering is lazy made by out of touch executives but crying about it all the time does not fix anything.
btw they’re under Paramount right now (the rights TJ the show has been in controversy tho) but Paramount isn’t owned by Disney, so “PR” for a company and person you don’t work for is stupid considering how much they’ve ripped into Disney for being an evil company for years
They also have families now which no doubt softened them up a bit. I remember Trey Parker saying the only reason he did the despicable me movie was because his daughter was a fan of those movies
Yep, money changes people unfortunately and it usually happens when they get older. You wanna take less risks at that age to not disrupt the flow of money.
At least they're realizing that more Trump shit would be beating a dead horse. Most "comedians" have yet to figure out that complaining about Trump got old like 5 years ago. I literally hate the man, but god damn it's annoying.
I just wish they made episodes like nascar or free Willy again. Im so tired of all the social and political commentary. Yes I understand nascar falls under that category. Its different tho
Looking at the most recent season, I guess you could make an argument that making fun of Harry and Megan and their whole schtick qualifies as political (but I don't think that's what y'all were talking about). Other than that, there was only one episode that was even remotely political (spring break). Other than that, it was Kanye, bidets, AI, and Cartman opening a hotdog stand.
Kind of get the feeling that I'm talking to a wall here, but they definitely still do episodes like the NASCAR one.
Disliking a show solely because their views don't always align with yours is an L take, btw.
It is true that South Park isn’t really that funny or insightful anymore (if it ever was insightful). I chalk it up to the two creators getting older and no longer really “on the pulse”.
There's a narrative that Trump is currently the President with a secret government. If you tell them that means he can't run again, they look at you confused and you get told since Democrats are crooks / evil that means he can have a 3rd term.
If they were doing it to make sure everyone involved in the production was "set for life" and ensuring they were fine to continue working in the field/location I'd kinda understand.
But if the entertainment industry has taught me anything thats almost never the case. Like How Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld essentially took way more than the lions share of the Seinfeld show, leaving even the main ensemble out to dry. The crew were fine to keep working and had connections but man having date a highschool student and get away with it money sure would be nice.
I don't blame them, all entertainment follows this. You see it a lot in bands where one artist's vision is the reason for the band's success. With Seinfeld they had a 1 in 1 Billion chance to become what it is now. If Kramer or George were the main characters, we'd be talking about them taking the lion's share. I didn't even mention how people like myself benefitted immensely because of that show (as a viewer).
I’d posted something similar years ago but made the mistake saying it in one of the popular subs where Average Redditors abound. Was immediately getting angry replies about how I must love Trump and blahblahblah.
Which is funny because when South Park first aired people assumed you where a Republican if you like it going so far as coining the phrase "South Park Republican" to describe a more libertarian faction in the Republican party.
Right-wingers wondering why every piece of media that isn’t made by equally as extreme right-wingers depicts them as dumb, nonsensical, contradictory, delusional idiots (they’re exactly the same as their depictions)
Some people think the last election was rigged. That's why the 4channer said it would be his third win because he thinks he won the second time but had the presidency stolen from him.
"when trump wins for a third time" well, if he didnt lose against biden then that would have been his second term and if he wins this time it would be his third term. such is also against the constitution.
The arc that started with PC Principal and Trump really killed South Park for me. I can't even watch older seasons anymore, I know where it's gonna end up.
Same, if trump being gay woman who's not actually woman is somewhat funny, PC Principle doing his shit without any repercussions is what fucking annoyed me as fuck
They can but Trey and Matt are so far down the political rabbit hole they forgot how to do regular comedy. This what happens when you incorporate politics into your domain of comedy. That’s why I enjoy aqua teen hunger for over South Parks of the world
yeah lmao it’s not like every show has a season about elections every election year. they prob just lost all their creative juices after relying too heavy on nothing but super current events
You're all over the thread whining about the show, maybe just don't fucking watch it? Or find something better, since wherever the fuck you're from is so much more refined and hilarious?
South Park has to be a modern day Psyop. For example in the Obesity/Ozempic special it’s weird how the message in the episode is basically take drugs or if you can’t find them make them illegally on TikTok unregulated. Diet and exercise weren’t mentioned once and the whole episode felt like an ad for Ozempic. Idk how people find shit funny other than millennials.
MissingMySpoon@reddit
I respect them because they follow current events, all their hour long special events go hard too
canacata@reddit
They follow current events, but do not "go hard." They will make an episode vaguely referencing some controversial event, but with no actual political message or statement. Just have it be background for a regular episode about the kids or whatever.

Righties hate learning their favorite entertainers think they’re regards
OmgJustLetMeExist@reddit
Right-wingers wondering why every piece of media that isn’t made by equally as extreme right-wingers depicts them as dumb, nonsensical, contradictory, delusional idiots (they’re exactly the same as their depictions)
CherryIndividual7976@reddit
man you're sooooo smart aren't you?
OmgJustLetMeExist@reddit
Bro’s mad that i called him out lmao
AutoJannietator@reddit
Stop talking like a scholar.
Chromedev3@reddit
I was kinda understand until he said third? Like politics aside, is his second win in the room with us right now?
FunnyMoney1984@reddit
Some people think the last election was rigged. That's why the 4channer said it would be his third win because he thinks he won the second time but had the presidency stolen from him.
goosebumper88@reddit
Guys, it's it a cop-out to day that reality is "beyond parody now" or is it really over?
FunnyMoney1984@reddit
Most comedy about Trump is really forced and cringe. The only time it's good is when Zack is doing a quick impression on Owny Plays.
__Sentient_Fedora__@reddit
They probably find the whole thing incredibly boring and don't want to give it life on screen.
ItsYaBoiFrost@reddit
"when trump wins for a third time" well, if he didnt lose against biden then that would have been his second term and if he wins this time it would be his third term. such is also against the constitution.
lagrandesgracia@reddit
South park has been crap for 8 years now
CherryIndividual7976@reddit
Every since Tegridy Farms
The-Filthy-Casual@reddit
Once they abandoned their “new story every episode” schematic I peaced out.
SDcowboy82@reddit
"when Trump wins for the third time"
Nothing funnier than smug dumbasses
Absolutemehguy@reddit
The arc that started with PC Principal and Trump really killed South Park for me. I can't even watch older seasons anymore, I know where it's gonna end up.
TrulyGolden@reddit
Still love watching the old stuff, season 1-10 is one of the goat TV shows. Barely seen any new episodes tho
zid0n2@reddit
Same, if trump being gay woman who's not actually woman is somewhat funny, PC Principle doing his shit without any repercussions is what fucking annoyed me as fuck
reimmi@reddit
Third time, lmao. Delusions of grandeur I suppose
LordGuru@reddit
You know... they could also make normal non-electional episode
ArthusRen@reddit
They still do
batmang@reddit
They need to go to space
AutoJannietator@reddit
They went to space and then made a joke about how this was the fifth time they've been to space.
ProblemEfficient6502@reddit
They did go to space
Trendmade@reddit (OP)
I feel like that would’ve been a good episode
theking4mayor@reddit
Pretty smart of them. Best case scenario they piss off half their audience. Worst case scenario they piss off their entire audience.
Individual_Sale_8853@reddit
In all honesty the show has been trash for few years now. Around the time of PC principal's introduction was it's decline for me
Nick_Tams@reddit
Good, now they can spend more time on Randy's weed business. /s
Crunchy-Leaf@reddit
Have they considered making original content and simply not adding the election?
Trendmade@reddit (OP)
They can but Trey and Matt are so far down the political rabbit hole they forgot how to do regular comedy. This what happens when you incorporate politics into your domain of comedy. That’s why I enjoy aqua teen hunger for over South Parks of the world
Literally_A_turd_AMA@reddit
I mean, why don't they just make a season not covering any recent events or trends for once
ethelcainsdaughter@reddit
yeah lmao it’s not like every show has a season about elections every election year. they prob just lost all their creative juices after relying too heavy on nothing but super current events
Waterbuck71@reddit
Peak reddit. The show is still funny, and it still gets insane views. You don’t have to hate something because it’s popular.
Absolutemehguy@reddit
Peak amerimutt, thinking his crooked country's bullshit politics funny.
Santer-Klantz@reddit
You're all over the thread whining about the show, maybe just don't fucking watch it? Or find something better, since wherever the fuck you're from is so much more refined and hilarious?
Absolutemehguy@reddit
stay mad, amerimutt. 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Waterbuck71@reddit
womp womp american show had american satire. cry about it
Noist_Mugget@reddit
Good imo, the trump shit brought the season long arcs which are the low point of the series, I like that the new seasons are back to being episodic
Gloombad@reddit
South Park has to be a modern day Psyop. For example in the Obesity/Ozempic special it’s weird how the message in the episode is basically take drugs or if you can’t find them make them illegally on TikTok unregulated. Diet and exercise weren’t mentioned once and the whole episode felt like an ad for Ozempic. Idk how people find shit funny other than millennials.
FuelKnight3079@reddit
Tegrity Farms Soy Park can eat my ass.
NewspaperFederal5379@reddit
South Park has become safe and irrelevant at this point.
Clown world should be an absolute comedy gold mine for them, but they have decided to sit out every major world event.
ConductorBeluga@reddit
For the third time lol I love coping rightoids
