So how much does a fine like this cost anyways.

I never understood how this could happen. Don’t you know that your trailer is still in the up position?
themtoesdontmatch@reddit (OP)
I try to avoid saying statements like this, because everytime I do the universe shows me how ‘this’ can happen 😂😂😂
spooky_vapor@reddit
about tree fiddy
J3wb0cca@reddit
After a home delivery I usually walk around the truck in case there’s a child or if my helper didn’t closed the lift gate or doors completely. Do these dump truck guys just never leave their truck? Is it so much work to climb out and look around for a few seconds?
radiationblessing@reddit
A lot of dump trucks in my experience are driven by dumbasses. The IQs around me are not great to begin with.
UhOhAllWillyNilly@reddit
Is it coincidental that a common euphemism for ‘dumb fvck’ is in fact “dump truck”? I think not.
CapableAd1475@reddit
😂😂
radiationblessing@reddit
Where are you that a euphemism for dumb fuck is dump truck?
Mister_Meenor@reddit
I loved driving dump trucks, but had to take a local route because they don't pay dump truck drivers enough... Sadly this is why
BobDole4201969@reddit
I mean you shouldn't have to leave the truck to see if the bed is down. How that guy didn't feel it while driving, let alone see it when he looked out of his mirrors. You can feel it when a 1 ton's bed is up 6", let alone all the way up. This guy is just a fucking idiot.
tmac27072@reddit
Likely distracted by his phone.
PayBetter@reddit
I saw an article that said this was a malfunction and it was slowly raising up per a witness.
tmac27072@reddit
Which the driver, with any basic CDL training, should have noticed.
I drive between Richmond and Hampton Roads daily. The amount of drivers I see with their face buried in their lap (on phone) while rolling 60-70mph is ridiculous.
Unfortunately, some folks require incidents like this to “wake up”.
Lucky no one was hurt.
CentralFeeder@reddit
My thoughts exactly… how the fuck on earth do you go down the road not knowing your trailer is jacked 20 feet into the air? Clearly the driver wasn’t paying attention and couldn’t be bothered to make sure everything was kosher before hitting the road. Someone asked about the fine for this? I’d be afraid to see the repair bill and labor to get the trailer down.
I left my hub last night and saw my rear trailer lights flickering. I had no plans of pulling over on to the shoulder to deal with it. You take your life into your hands doing that shit. I waited to get up the road to the closed down scale and pulled in there to deal with it. Five minutes to shim the light cord and then pee and I was good to go. I’ll speak strictly for what I see where I work… half these drivers can’t be bothered to do a proper pre or post trip and certainly don’t pay much attention to anything else but their phones or other devices while going down the road and it is embarrassing, and scary.
jarawd@reddit
Doing a walk around wouldn’t solve anything in this scenario. He most likely left the PTO on and accidentally hit the lever to raise the box. Some trucks will have a light on the dash when your PTO is on, some won’t let you go past a certain speed, some will scream at you, and some trucks will do absolutely nothing to let you know your PTO is on. Not excusing the driver, you should be checking your mirrors enough to notice this as soon as it happens, just explaining how it’s possible
J-Kensington@reddit
Yeah, it's that last part that really gets me. I checked my mirrors at least 30 times a minute; how the hell do you not notice there's no trailer where there should be a trailer? Especially if your job is pulling a trailer that likes to lose games of chicken against overhead signs and bridges?
dieselsauces@reddit
Phone, they are occupied with other things rather than paying attention to the road and themselves
Tsndumbass@reddit
I’m local to this. The guy apparently went through a scale house mile back. Def just a miss clicked button or lever. I only do refer but wouldn’t the driver feel some wind resistance from this raising?
SidiousX@reddit
Doesn’t add up. That’s on 295N right before 64. Closest scale is on 64E, the next exit visible in the video.
Diggitygiggitycea@reddit
You use GPS a lot, huh?
RobertsFakeAccount@reddit
You’re kidding…. Right?
Do you even know how to read the freeway signs?
Two left lanes continue on the ……….. 64 West.
The right lane exits to the 295/60
jalewis137@reddit
No, it's 64 west heading into Richmond (from New Kent), so the scale wasn't far back.
tmac27072@reddit
This is correct.
Tsndumbass@reddit
Just what the local news article said
jarawd@reddit
Most likely. My truck has it where as soon as you lower the box the PTO automatically shuts off. So can’t say it’s ever happened to me
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Surely it’d feel different
Saint-Gerbilus@reddit
Mine has an alarm that screams at you until the PTO is off
Difficult-Worker62@reddit
Some of them don’t. I get out and clean my hitch off and tailgate after I dump material unless it’s just going from one side of the jobsite to the other. But I think the issue here is someone wasn’t checking their mirrors periodically or didn’t notice how the truck was swaying due tot he box being up cause you can’t definitely feel the difference when it’s raised
John-Rollosson@reddit
You’re fucking right you feel a difference. I haul a dump body and I’m constantly amazed at the cluelessness of some people. But maybe I’m too in tune with my truck. Idk.
CMDR_PEARJUICE@reddit
If intelligence falls on a bellcurve, at least half of us are on the losing end
Difficult-Worker62@reddit
I usually run a quad axel and sometimes a lead and you can definitely feel them sway especially the lead when it’s up in the air
UhOhAllWillyNilly@reddit
Is it coincidental that a common euphemism for ‘dumb fvck’ is in fact “dump truck”? I think not.
Coodevale@reddit
Not to downplay this but at freeway rpms in a low geared local heavy hauler, the pto could send the box up in a few seconds. Might not have enough time for the difference to dawn on you.
However.. I've also driven trucks that didn't have lights, alarms, or software indicators that the pto was on. The biggest difference was in the shifting while the pto was dragging in the system. It slows gears down faster and changes your rhythm, like the difference between shifting with the engine fan on vs off. Yes, I found that out because I forgot a few times. That truck also didn't retain clutch brakes for more than a few minutes. They'd pop out on the mechanics that tried to replace them. My smooth brain "fix" was using the pto as a hydraulic clutch brake if I had to let the clutch out in neutral for some reason. It worked quite well but the mechanics got after me for it.. despite not being able to install a clutch brake..
Wettnoodle77@reddit
How do you get on the highway and just not be able to tell the weight shift? Legit question wouldn't small turns make this feel so tippy?
Dew_Boy13@reddit
Or simply look in your mirrors more than never?
Valuable_Thought_969@reddit
I drive a propane bobtail, and after every delivery, I do a 360 walk around to make sure there are children or animals. I heard an almost horror story of a Ferrellgas driver did a 360 across from a hospital, and found a wrapped up newborn in. Front. Of. His. Dually.
CapableAd1475@reddit
The price of replacing this structure will be crazy money. The fine is just a drop in the bucket.
Extension-Chemist306@reddit
How much you got? No probably $5
BatmanKane64@reddit
of all the times something has happened in my home state and i moved away…. now i can i just add this too the list
Bo1622@reddit
Wanna know what’s crazy? Less than a mile previous he was at the truck drivers weigh station. I don’t drive a dump trailer so I’m not sure what malfunctioned.
Snowman4168@reddit
What often happens is guys forget to take their PTO out and then they bump the dump control when they reach down for a peanut or something and the box raises without the driver knowing. I know it sounds silly but it’s easier to do than you might think. Still no excuse for not looking in your mirrors regularly.
Mountainear99@reddit
Even then, I don’t understand how you wouldn’t feel a difference in the handling. Not to mention he clearly wasn’t looking in his mirrors at all to see the bed rising
RawkaGrand24@reddit
Why would a driver drive with their bed “Raised”???
Binkies_galore@reddit
According to the Virginian Pilot
A tractor-trailer crashed into a highway sign that stretched high over the roadway on Interstate 64 in Henrico County Thursday morning.
The tractor-trailer was traveling west at about 9:36 a.m. when the raised bed collided with the sign for Exit 200. Virginia State Police said the collision caused the bed to separate from the cab and get stuck, propped up in the air at nearly a 90-degree angle, based on pictures of the incident.
The driver, 62-year-old Richard D. Houston of Lorton, wasn’t injured in the wreck. Houston is charged with reckless driving
themtoesdontmatch@reddit (OP)
Ooooo… he gets jail time 😮💨😮💨
bustex1@reddit
You think he will go to jail for this?!
Yz-Guy@reddit
He shouldn't. Jail is for criminals. This dude fucked up for sure. But he doesn't belong in jail.
Smeiiy0ctopuss@reddit
Not a trucker. Been in jail 4 days for reckless driving (speed)
Unrelated but I watched a driver (Honda Pilot) hit and run over a pedestrian while they were inside of a crosswalk, dragged them around 50 feet mangled up in the rear wheel well and had to be flagged down to stop. Pedestrian was alive but sent to ICU for (they never directly said it, but implied immediate surgery) I stayed at the scene since I was the car directly behind the driver. Asked for a follow up if possible. They never did. I looked it up and the driver was charged with Reckless driving. So this person that hit and dragged a pedestrian in a crosswalk gets the same ticket that I got for doing 90 in a 65 with nobody on the road but me.
CivilizedTofu@reddit
Where did you do 90 on 65 if you don’t mind me asking. I see many Californians averaging 85 on a 65
Yz-Guy@reddit
495 by me is 65. Staties won't touch you unless you go one 85
MoJo3088@reddit
Not to sound condescending but the difference is the cop prevented you from hurting someone! Like yourself for instance. One mechanical malfunction or debris on the road could potentially send you over a bypass into a neighborhood
Smeiiy0ctopuss@reddit
Good ol Virginia. Orange specifically. Spent 4 days in Madison County. Judge looked at me and said, “not in my town”
MoJo3088@reddit
Was gonna say bubba don’t get that lucky
poisonpony672@reddit
I agree with you non injury accident. Probation at the most.
Nlivie@reddit
Exactly!!!
Simplenipplefun@reddit
I agree.
themtoesdontmatch@reddit (OP)
I thought that’s what ‘getting charged’ meant
radiationblessing@reddit
A charge is just an offense. It's the crime they want to say you did. Driving over 80 in Virginia for example is reckless driving but you would not go to jail for that.
UhOhAllWillyNilly@reddit
Oh, you could go to jail for that if you did it repeatedly
BouncingSphinx@reddit
Being "charged" with something simply means you're formally being accused of it, not that you're guilty of it.
Newsdriver245@reddit
oh he's getting charged, on his credit card.
1morepl8@reddit
Reddit math.
tvieno@reddit
In Virginia:
Reckless Driving
- Class 1 Misdemeanor
- Fine – Maximum $2,500 Fine – - Jail Time – up to 12 months - 6 points on license (max) - Will remain on your Criminal record permanently
- Must Appear in Court (or have a Lawyer appear for you)
Unless he owns his own truck, no company is going to touch this guy.
Tricky_Big_8774@reddit
As someone who has been charged with reckless driving in this exact county, it's also a catch-all charge when the officer thinks you deserve a ticket but doesn't know what else to charge you with. If he really went through the scale with the bed down, it's very likely the charge will be reduced unless the judge has a hard on for truckers. Even if they don't reduce the charge he's not likely to get jail time.
DoTheHamsterDance@reddit
It’s the same in most jurisdictions, I was charged with it (years before I got my cdl) for lane filtering on a motorcycle. Thankfully the judge was more sane than the cop and threw it out.
CentralFeeder@reddit
Yeah, career killer right there, reckless driving with a CDL, even worse behind the wheel of the commercial vehicle and not your personal vehicle.

Back in the day, several Midwest states would also sue in civil court for all repair/replacement costs for infrastructure. That was pretty much the end of that trucking company. Attorneys got around it by having company immediately file for bankruptcy. Company reached into desk drawer and brought out paperwork for different company name they had already filed with all government agencies but never operated. We need something in between: real consequences for dumb ass actions that save taxpayers $$$ , without the revolving door of paperwork to avoid all liability.
rektRandy@reddit
I'll never understand how this happens. I did a little side work driving dump truck, and after every time I delivered the product, I would watch the bucket go down. Made sure it would be locked in the down position. I checked it pretty frequently going down the road, too
One_Sport_4195@reddit
The signs and structure alone is gonna run about 100 to 150k
randomkeystrike@reddit
It’s probably just borderline inconceivable how much the actual installed cost of that sign is. Just a run of the mill suburban stop sign costs hundreds.

santanzchild@reddit
Even beyond citations you are going to be out the cost of the rotator clean up and replacement of the sign.
I took out a telephone pole when I was 16. That alone cost me $650 and all they did was lift it back in place and put a couple of metal brackets on it.
proscriptus@reddit
Yeah, that's going to be the big money. That entire structure is going to have to be removed and replaced, probably damaged the footings as well, road surface might have to be patched, all the man hours for an entire DOT crew and all the associated expenses. That's got to be HIGH six figures.
HarpersGhost@reddit
Yeah, I'm seeing online $75k just for the sign bridge. And that's the price for scheduled-upcoming-fiscal-year installation, not oh-shit-we-need-to-replace-it-right-now. Then cranes and the signs themselves and then all the highway patrol to close the interstate for several hours on various exits.
driverman42@reddit
About 40 years ago, I lost control of my semi on black ice, jackknifed, and hit a bridge. As I was sliding off the road, I took out one of the aluminum edge-marker posts, about 4 ft tall with a round reflector on top. About 3 months after the accident, I received a bill from the state for $35 for that post.
pakman82@reddit
When I was in my late 20's I hit a telephone pole sliding slowly down a hill in an ice storm, and hit a pole that I saw a cop just leave an accident scene when I was at the top of the hill.. and got charged $500 by at&t.. because they had to check the pole or some garbage. The bull- darn car was less than a week old to me. And I was on the way to pay to get a 2nd key made. I was crawling down the road but the car had performance tires (Mazda 3) and the road was domed, and had small curbs so I popped right onto the sidewalk and into the dang pole, center on.
santanzchild@reddit

How hard can it be to invent something that prevents a truck being driven with the bed up ??!! Some sort of gearbox lock
trucker96961@reddit
It's not hard. Mine won't go over about 5mph with PTO engaged. Also when travelling I always have my lift lever locked in the "down" position.
santanzchild@reddit
What if you need to spread as you dump?
ipascoe@reddit
Good point . So something that locks out all gears over 1st ?
ShadyVermin@reddit
That exists, when I drove dump trucks they wouldn't go over like 15km with the PTO on. Some trucks don't have this though, such as this one.
HedonisticIntentions@reddit

Shot-Base2556@reddit

santanzchild@reddit
Ya I was expecting them to support the top pull it back then lower it. Apparently they just said screw it and went full send.
Strider_27@reddit
Probably the safety factor of not being able to rig the front of trailer. Easier to just yank, and no chance of making someone into meat pulp this way

Commercial_Pitch_786@reddit
sad and scary at the same time. How can a guy raise to dump the load then completely forget it is still in the up position???
GoToTheStore2Day@reddit
He forgot to disengage the PTO. The dump lever worked its way to the dump position. Usually, you can hear the PTO if you’re running at high speed but if you have your headset in or the radio up, you’ll never hear it.
Commercial_Pitch_786@reddit
Thank you, i am clueless. I appreciate your reply. It makes sense now and feel bad for the driver, it could have happened to anyone.
GoToTheStore2Day@reddit
There has been a slow decline in the quality of drivers. Many are steering wheel holders and don’t have a lot of respect for the trade. You can see that with the drivers that go to the plants, mills or refineries and they show up wearing slides and shorts with the T-shirt. There are still those that are dedicated to the trade but it’s getting fewer and farther between.
